1. Standoff Tracking Using DNN-Based MPC with Implementation on FPGA

Abstract

This work studies the standoff tracking problem to drive an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to slide on a desired circle over a moving target at a constant height. We propose a novel Lyapunov guidance vector (LGV) field with tunable convergence rates for the UAV's trajectory planning and a deep neural network (DNN)-based model predictive control (MPC) scheme to track the reference trajectory. Then, we show how to collect samples for training the DNN offline and design an integral module (IM) to refine the tracking performance of our DNN-based MPC. Moreover, the hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation with an FPGA@200MHz demonstrates that our method is a valid alternative to embedded implementations of MPC for addressing complex systems and applications which is impossible for directly solving the MPC optimization problems.

Studies have shown that the infiltration level of tissue resident memory CD8+ T cells (CD8+ TRMs) is positively correlated with lung cancer prognosis and can be an ideal biomarker for assessing the tumor local immune status. We screened the radiomic features associated with CD8+ TRMs as targets in NSCLC surgical specimens by radiomic approaches, and established a radiomic predictive model to assess the local immune status, which may provide a scientific reference for lung cancer treatment strategies.Patients and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the NSCLC surgical specimens immune cell database and extracted CD8+ TRMs cell data, preoperative CT scan data were achieved. A total of 97 patients containing complete preoperative data were included, radiomic features were extracted from the preoperative CT image data. Abstract

We describe the design of our federated task processing system. Originally, the system was created to support two specific federated tasks: evaluation and tuning of on-device ML systems, primarily for the purpose of personalizing these systems. In recent years, support for an additional federated task has been added: federated learning (FL) of deep neural networks. To our knowledge, only one other system has been described in literature that supports FL at scale. We include comparisons to that system to help discuss design decisions and attached trade-offs. Finally, we describe two specific large scale personalization use cases in detail to showcase the applicability of federated tuning to on-device personalization and to highlight application specific solutions., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure

Abstract

All-inorganic and earth-abundant bi-/trimetallic hydr(oxy)oxides are widely used as oxygen evolution electrocatalysts owing to their remarkable performance. However, their atomically precise structures remain undefined, complicating their optimization and limiting the understanding of their enhanced performance. Here, the underlying structure-property correlation is explored by using a well-defined cobalt-phosphate polyoxometalate cluster [{Co-4(OH)(3)(PO4)}(4)(SiW9O34)(4)](32-) (1), which may serve as a molecular model of multimetal hydr(oxy)oxides. The catalytic activity is enhanced upon replacing Co by Fe in 1, resulting in a reduced overpotential (385 mV) for oxygen evolution (by 66 mV) compared to that of the parent 1 at 10 mA cm(-2) in an acidic medium; this overpotential is comparable to that for the IrO2 catalyst. These abundant-metal-based polyoxometalates exhibit high stability, with no evidence of degradation even after 24 h of operation.

Original studies relevant to vancomycin dosing regimen in adults with hematologic malignancies or neutropenia were included. No restriction was applied in study design and language. A descriptive analysis was performed.Results: Twenty-three studies were included eventually, of which eighteen were case series studies, four were cohort studies and another one was a randomized controlled trial. Five case series studies made a clinical audit of conventional vancomycin dosing in patients with malignancies or neutropenia, showing that the proportion of patients with sub-therapeutic trough levels remained high, ranging from 32% to 88%. Seven case series studies and four cohort studies demonstrated that vancomycin clearance (CLva) tended to be higher in patients with hematologic malignancies or neutropenia, whereas volume of distribution (V) seemed to be comparable to the control group. 6. Coordinate-free Isoline Tracking in Unknown 2-D Scalar Fields

Abstract

The isoline tracking of this work is concerned with the control design for a sensing robot to track a given isoline of an unknown 2-D scalar filed. To this end, we propose a coordinate-free controller with a simple PI-like form using only the concentration feedback for a Dubins robot, which is particularly useful in GPS-denied environments. The key idea lies in the novel design of a sliding surface based error term in the standard PI controller. Interestingly, we also prove that the tracking error can be reduced by increasing the proportion gain, and is eliminated for circular fields with a non-zero integral gain. 7. Coordinate-free Circumnavigation of a Moving Target via a PD-like Controller

Abstract

This paper proposes a coordinate-free controller for a nonholonomic vehicle to circumnavigate a fully-actuated moving target by using range-only measurements. If the range rate is available, our Proportional Derivative (PD)-like controller has a simple structure as the standard PD controller, except the design of an additive constant bias and a saturation function in the error feedback. We show that if the target is stationary, the vehicle asymptotically encloses the target with a predefined radius at an exponential convergence rate, i.e., an exact circumnavigation pattern can be completed. For a moving target, the circumnavigation error converges to a small region whose size is shown proportional to the maneuverability of the target, e.g., the maximum linear speed and acceleration. Moreover, we design a second-order sliding mode (SOSM) filter to estimate the range rate and show that the SOSM filter can recover the range rate in a finite time. 8. The Isoline Tracking in Unknown Scalar Fields with Concentration Feedback

Abstract

The isoline tracking of this work is concerned with the control design for a sensing vehicle to track a desired isoline of an unknown scalar field. To this end, we propose a simple PI-like controller for a Dubins vehicle in the GPS-denied environments. Our key idea lies in the design of a novel sliding surface based error in the standard PI controller. For the circular field, we show that the P-like controller can globally regulate the vehicle to the desired isoline with the steady-state error that can be arbitrarily reduced by increasing the P gain, and is eliminated by the PI-like controller. For any smoothing field, the P-like controller is able to achieve the local regulation. Then, it is extended to the cases of a single-integrator vehicle and a doubleintegrator vehicle, respectively. Finally, the effectiveness and advantages of our approaches are validated via simulations on the fixed-wing UAV and quadrotor simulators.

9. Assessing vertical diffusion in a stratified lake using a 3D hydrodynamic model

Abstract

Vertical turbulent diffusivity (Kz), which can be estimated from water temperature, is a key factor in the evolution of water quality in lentic waters. In this study, we analysed the capability of a three‐dimensional hydrodynamic model (EFDC) to capture water temperature and vertical diffusivity in Lake Arendsee in the Northern German plain. Of particular interest to us is to evaluate the model performance for capturing the diffusion minimum within the metalimnion and analyse the response of the metalimnetic Kz to meteorological forcing, namely changing wind speed and warming. The comparison confirmed that the calibrated model could reproduce both stratification dynamics and vertical diffusion profiles in the lake. The model was also shown to be able to capture the duration and vertical extent of the metalimnetic diffusion minimum. The scenario results illustrate that, compared to air temperature, wind velocity appeared to be the more influential meteorological variable on the vertical exchange within the metalimnion. While increasing wind velocities mostly affected the minimum values of Kz in the metalimnion and thus led to intensified vertical exchange, the reduction of wind velocity mostly affected the depth of minimal Kz, but not its absolute value.

10. Target Encirclement with any Smooth Pattern Using Range-only Measurements

Abstract

This paper proposes a coordinate-free controller to drive a mobile robot to encircle a target at unknown position by only using range measurements. Different from the existing works, a backstepping based controller is proposed to encircle the target with zero steady-state error for any desired smooth pattern. Moreover, we show its asymptotic exponential convergence under a fixed set of control parameters, which are independent of the initial distance to the target. The effectiveness and advantages of the proposed controller are validated via simulations.

11. Flight Control for UAV Loitering Over a Ground Target with Unknown Maneuver

Abstract

This paper proposes a flight controller for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to loiter over a ground moving target (GMT). We are concerned with the scenario that the stochastically time-varying maneuver of the GMT is unknown to the UAV, which renders it challenging to estimate the GMT's motion state. Assuming that the state of the GMT is available, we first design a discrete-time Lyapunov vector field for the loitering guidance and then design a discrete-time integral sliding mode control (ISMC) to track the guidance commands. By modeling the maneuver process as a finite-state Markov chain, we propose a Rao-Blackwellised particle filter (RBPF), which only requires a few number of particles, to simultaneously estimate the motion state and the maneuver of the GMT with a camera or radar sensor. Then, we apply the principle of certainty equivalence to the ISMC and obtain the flight controller for completing the loitering task. Abstract

Precise patterning of biomaterials has widespread applications, including drug release, degradable implants, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. Patterning of protein-based microstructures using UV-photolithography has been demonstrated using protein as the resist material. The Achilles heel of existing protein-based biophotoresists is the inevitable wide molecular weight distribution during the protein extraction/regeneration process, hindering their practical uses in the semiconductor industry where reliability and repeatability are paramount. A wafer-scale high resolution patterning of bio-microstructures using well-defined silk fibroin light chain as the resist material is presented showing unprecedent performances. The lithographic and etching performance of silk fibroin light chain resists are evaluated systematically and the underlying mechanisms are thoroughly discussed. The micropatterned silk structures are tested as cellular substrates for the successful spatial guidance of fetal neural stems cells seeded on the patterned substrates. The enhanced patterning resolution, the improved etch resistance, and the inherent biocompatibility of such protein-based photoresist provide new opportunities in fabricating large scale biocompatible functional microstructures.

Abstract

Recently, we identified biallelic mutations of SLC25A46 in patients with multiple neuropathies. Functional studies revealed that SLC25A46 may play an important role in mitochondrial dynamics by mediating mitochondrial fission. However, the cellular basis and pathogenic mechanism of the SLC25A46-related neuropathies are not fully understood. Thus, we generated a Slc25a46 knock-out mouse model. Mice lacking SLC25A46 displayed severe ataxia, mainly caused by degeneration of Purkinje cells. Increased numbers of small, unmyelinated and degenerated optic nerves as well as loss of retinal ganglion cells indicated optic atrophy. Compound muscle action potentials in peripheral nerves showed peripheral neuropathy associated with degeneration and demyelination in axons. Mutant cerebellar neurons have large mitochondria, which exhibit abnormal distribution and transport. Biochemically mutant mice showed impaired electron transport chain activity and accumulated autophagy markers. Our results suggest that loss of SLC25A46 causes degeneration in neurons by affecting mitochondrial dynamics and energy production.

15. Neural Reranking for Named Entity Recognition

Abstract

We propose a neural reranking system for named entity recognition (NER). The basic idea is to leverage recurrent neural network models to learn sentence-level patterns that involve named entity mentions. In particular, given an output sentence produced by a baseline NER model, we replace all entity mentions, such as \textit{Barack Obama}, into their entity types, such as \textit{PER}. The resulting sentence patterns contain direct output information, yet is less sparse without specific named entities. For example, "PER was born in LOC" can be such a pattern. LSTM and CNN structures are utilised for learning deep representations of such sentences for reranking. Results show that our system can significantly improve the NER accuracies over two different baselines, giving the best reported results on a standard benchmark., Comment: Accepted as regular paper by RANLP 2017

On the other hand, statistical segmentation research has exploited richer sources of external information, such as punctuation, automatic segmentation and POS. We investigate the effectiveness of a range of external training sources for neural word segmentation by building a modular segmentation model, pretraining the most important submodule using rich external sources. The effects on cell proliferation, cycle, migration, and invasion were investigated by Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, methyl cellulose colony-forming assay, propidium iodide staining, and Transwell assays in vitro. Changes in cell growth inhibition and apoptosis, when combined with chemotherapy drugs, were determined using the Cell Counting Kit-8 and Annexin V-FITC/PI assays. U937 xenograft models were used to assess the effects of B7-H3 on tumorigenicity and the therapeutic effect of B7-H3 knockdown in combination with chemotherapy drugs in vivo.Results: Downregulation of B7-H3 significantly decreased U937 cell growth and colony-forming ability. The mean inhibition rate of tumor growth with B7-H3 knockdown was 59.4%, and the expression of both Ki-67 and PCNA in xenografts was significantly reduced. After B7-H3 silencing, the U937 cell cycle was arrested at the G0/G1 phase. The cell migration rate of B7-H3 knockdown cells was reduced more than fivefold, and invasion capacity decreased by 86.7%. B7-H3 RNAi profoundly increased the antitumor effect of chemotherapy in vitro and in vivo. On day 19, inhibition rates of tumor growth in B7-H3 shRNA combined with idarubicin, cytarabine, and idarubicin plus cytarabine were 70.5%, 80.0%, and 90.0%, respectively (P=0.006, P=0.004, and P=0.016, respectively).Conclusion: B7-H3 may promote U937 cell progression, and shRNA targeting B7-H3 significantly enhances sensitivity to chemotherapeutic drugs. A radiation gene box (RGB) onboard the SJ-10 satellite is a device carrying mice and drosophila cells to determine the biological effects of space radiation environment. The shielded fluxes of different radioactive sources were calculated and the linear energy transfers of gamma-rays, electrons, protons and alpha-particles in tissue were acquired using A-150 tissue-equivalent plastic. Then, a conceptual model of a space radiation instrument employing three semiconductor sub-detectors for deriving the charged and uncharged radiation environment of the RGB was designed. The energy depositions in the three sub-detectors were classified into fifteen channels (bins) in an algorithm derived from the Monte Carlo method. The physical feasibility of the conceptual instrument was also verified by Monte Carlo simulations., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures
