1. Atypical perception : cognitive, behavioural, and neural correlates

Abstract: Our phenomenological experience of our shared physical world can vary drastically across individuals. Subjective sensory sensitivity constitutes one test-case of this type of variability, as the same simple sensory stimulation can lead to responses ranging from fascination to neutrality to outright aversion in different people. These differences can be found in the general population yet are markedly more prominent in association with neurological and developmental conditions and disorders, including migraine, ADHD, synaesthesia and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The existing research on subjective sensory sensitivity has been conducted primarily within the field of developmental disorders, and particularly of ASD, where it has furthermore informed wide-ranging theories of its aetiology. The overarching aim of this thesis was to investigate potential underlying mechanisms of individual differences in atypical sensory experiences, focusing on subjective sensory sensitivity in the general population. While taking an individual differences approach, it is grounded primarily in the autism literature, aiming to dissociate the specific dimension of subjective sensory sensitivity from the broader autistic(-like) phenotype. Chapter 2 focused on the internal noise theory of ASD, according to which there are increased fluctuations in neural responses in ASD, leading to more variable percepts and behavioural responses. It aimed to replicate a previously reported correlation between autistic-like traits and response consistency using a psychophysical double-pass paradigm in the general population and investigate the role of subjective sensory sensitivity in this association. While we found that individual differences in response consistency are reliable across time, we did not detect any correlation between these and autistic-like traits. Chapter 3 investigated variability in macroscale cortical organization associated with autistic-like traits including subjective sensory sensitivity in the general population. Applying a dimensionality reduction technique to a resting-state fMRI dataset, components termed cortical gradients were derived. The principal component spanning from visual to default mode networks, is reliably conserved and is thought to reflect the transition from perception to abstract cognition. Individuals with higher subjective sensory sensitivity, yet not other autistic-like traits, show greater distance between the two poles of this principal gradient, indicating reduced functional integration. Chapters 4 and 5 investigated individual differences in perceptual inference supporting associative learning correlated with synaesthesia and autistic-like traits. The paradigm is designed to induce perceptual false alarms by repeatedly pairing a cue with a conditioned stimulus. The rate of these false alarms together with the results of a computational model of the underlying inference processes have previously shown imbalances in sensory evidence and prior knowledge in individuals prone to hallucinations in their daily lives. Synaesthetes show increased and fixed expectancies of the cue-stimulus association, while individuals with high levels of autistic-like traits show an increased learning rate in updating their belief in the cue-stimulus association. Findings of reduced reliance on prior knowledge in ASD, putatively leading to atypical sensory processing, may stem from a failure to learn and exploit the statistical regularities in the environment. Chapter 6 investigated individual differences and underlying mechanisms of choice history biases and their adaptation to sequential regularities. This showed evidence of reduced adaptation in choice history biases in people with particularly high levels of autistic-like traits. The underlying mechanisms were investigated by capitalizing on noise-driven fluctuations in the orientation statistics of the stimuli in a reverse-correlation analysis. This shows primarily increased stimulus-independent bias to respond in line with the predicted orientation though also changes in stimulus-dependent sensitivity to favour information consistent with the prediction. History bias adaptation measures derived from this analysis reveal a different pattern of results associated with high subjective sensory sensitivity compared to high levels of autistic-like traits. Together, these findings further characterize individual differences in perceptual decision-making and integration in individuals with atypical sensory experiences. More generally, they indicate that different types and aspects of atypical sensory experience constitute distinct and dissociable traits, underpinned by partially independent substrates beyond those associated with a broader cognitive profile.

2. Decommodifying housing, deprivatising the home : a study of the emergence of self-managed cooperative housing in the city of Barcelona

Abstract: This research unravels the inequalities and exclusions embedded in a system of social reproduction based on the mutually reinforcing relationship between home ownership and family responsibility while seeking an alternative to this in a cooperative housing model recently developed in Barcelona. My study is the fruit of 9 months of qualitative fieldwork studying the "grant of use model," a form of self-managed cooperative housing without antecedents in Spain that separates use from ownership, decommodifies housing and collectivises social reproduction. I argue that social reproduction under neoliberalism relies on a double process of privatisation based on household financialisation and the offloading of reproductive responsibilities from the state onto the family. In Spain, where family and home ownership are two historical pillars of welfare, this process has been particularly pervasive. A deeply embedded ideology of home ownership combined with neoliberal ideas such as "asset-based welfare" and policy regimes such as "privatised Keynesianism" have financialised social reproduction in and through homes. In a context of wage erosion, austerity, unemployment/underemployment and mortgage tightening measures, access to housing assets is increasingly reliant on the particularistic logic of family solidarity. This widens the gap between the asset-rich and the asset-poor, homeowners and tenants, and those who are supported by their families and those who are not. I explore the potentials and limitations of a form of housing that departs from the dyad: home ownership-family. The grant of use model is grounded in long-term leases of public land and self-management. Its goal is not only to produce decommodified, good quality housing but also self-organised communities. In analysing how social reproduction is collectivised, I found that self-organisation produces both caring communities and spaces which catalyse solidaristic practices beyond the family. However, I also point to the institutional, material and cultural constraints of this model in becoming an alternative to home ownership and private rent. The conclusion here is that although this model has immense prefigurative potential, currently, the scarcity of public land, the initial fees to access these projects, and its time-consuming nature are barriers to expanding this model while democratising access.

3. Multi-agent, non-equilibrium, and network models of labour economics and financial contagion

Abstract: The financial crisis of 2009 showed that the economy is not in equilibrium. That is, the economy is in a state where agents have incentives to modify their chosen actions. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has shown that the economy changes rapidly and that reaching an equilibrium can take years, if one is reached at all. However, assuming equilibrium has long formed the basis of many economic models. Although a non-equilibrium approach may seem better suited for answering economic policy questions during times of rapid change, previously, the lack of data and computing power made it difficult to build these type of models. Today, these factors are less constraining. This thesis contributes to the development of non-equilibrium economic models that can provide accurate answers to policy-relevant questions efficiently. The models we develop have the potential to enable fast economic analysis and can be run in near real-time. In the first part of this thesis, we focus on the labour market. We develop a model to analyse how workers move through an empirically derived occupational mobility network in response to labour demand shocks. We show that we can approximate the behaviour of the agent-based model with a discrete dynamical system. At the macro level, our model reproduces the Beveridge curve's dynamics, i.e. the negative relationship between vacancy and unemployment rate. At the occupation level, we study the potential impact of automation and the COVID-19 pandemic on employment. We find that the network structure plays an important role in determining unemployment levels, with occupations in particular areas of the network having few job transition opportunities. In the second part, we use multiplex networks to study global financial contagion. This work focuses on identifying systemically important countries, i.e. countries whose financial distress can propagate to other countries. We build a global financial multiplex network and develop a multiplex threshold model of financial contagion. We find that the number of systemically important countries can be twice as large when we consider a multiplex network structure compared to a monoplex structure. These two models have the potential to be used for policy design. Arguably, support and skill development programs should be directed towards workers who are likely to face longer periods of unemployment. Our model can help policymakers identify who these workers are. Our multiplex model of financial contagion represents a first step towards developing multiplex network models which policy institutions could use to prevent the spread of financial contagion.

4. From cookstoves to smart homes : examining the social dynamics of household energy behaviour

Abstract: This PhD examines the social dynamics of household energy behaviour through a mixed methods approach. First, through an extensive literature review analysis from 2013 to 2017, it overviews the current knowledge to identify what behaviour change techniques are the most successful for the uptake and maintained use of improved cookstoves. This research also addresses a set of policy recommendations and assesses academic gaps in the literature. Second, based on an original dataset involving expert interviews, site visits to retailers, and a comprehensive review of the literature, this PhD examines the promises and perils of smart home technologies. Drawing on original data collected in the United Kingdom, it later examines current definitions of smart homes and provides 267 specific options commercially available from 113 companies to provide a new classification of smart technology, structured into 13 categories. Then, this PhD situates these technology categories alongside six levels of smartness, from basic or traditional homes to fully automated and sentient homes. Under this benchmark, it discusses 13 distinct benefits and 17 risks and barriers for smart homes to introduce seven policy recommendations and 15 emerging business models. Third, through a rigorous mixed methods research design, comprised of a nationally representative survey in the United Kingdom (n=1,032) and focus groups in London, Manchester, and Surrey (n=18 respondents) this thesis identifies the gendered nature of smart homes across five different dimensions (1) knowledge, awareness, and adoption patterns; (2) housekeeping and daily domestic life; (3) environmental sustainability; (4) trust and risk tolerance; and (5) emotions and feelings. Additionally, this research explores the extent that smart home technologies can act as potential enablers of domestic abuse and as enablers of conflict within households. It concludes with policy implications as well as how these findings point the way towards future research.

Abstract: Background: The association between volume, complications and pathological outcomes is still under debate regarding colorectal cancer surgery. The aim of the study was to assess the association between centre volume and severe complications, mortality, less-than-radical oncologic surgery, and indications for neoadjuvant therapy. Methods: Retrospective analysis of 16,883 colorectal cancer cases from 80 centres (2018-2021). Outcomes: 30-day mortality; Clavien-Dindo grade >2 complications; removal of ≥ 12 lymph nodes; non-radical resection; neoadjuvant therapy. Quartiles of hospital volumes were classified as LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH, and VERY HIGH. Independent predictors, both overall and for rectal cancer, were evaluated using logistic regression including age, gender, AJCC stage and cancer site. Results: LOW-volume centres reported a higher rate of severe postoperative complications (OR 1.50, 95% c.i. 1.15-1.096, P = 0.003). The rate of ≥ 12 lymph nodes removed in LOW-volume (OR 0.68, 95% c.i. 0.56-0.85, P < 0.001) and MEDIUM-volume (OR 0.72, 95% c.i. 0.62-0.83, P < 0.001) centres was lower than in VERY HIGH-volume centres. Of the 4676 rectal cancer patients, the rate of ≥ 12 lymph nodes removed was lower in LOW-volume than in VERY HIGH-volume centres (OR 0.57, 95% c.i. 0.41-0.80, P = 0.001). A lower rate of neoadjuvant chemoradiation was associated with HIGH (OR 0.66, 95% c.i. 0.56-0.77, P < 0.001), MEDIUM (OR 0.75, 95% c.i. 0.60-0.92, P = 0.006), and LOW (OR 0.70, 95% c.i. 0.52-0.94, P = 0.019) volume centres (vs. VERY HIGH). Conclusion: Colorectal cancer surgery in low-volume centres is at higher risk of suboptimal management, poor postoperative outcomes, and less-than-adequate oncologic resections. Centralisation of rectal cancer cases should be taken into consideration to optimise the outcomes.

7. Transverse Momentum Moments

Abstract: We establish robust relations between Transverse Momentum Dependent distributions (TMDs) and collinear distributions. We define weighted integrals of TMDs that we call Transverse Momentum Moments (TMMs) and prove that TMMs are equal to collinear distributions evaluated in some minimal subtraction scheme. The conversion to the $\bar{MS}$-scheme can be done by a calculable factor, which we derive up to three loops for some cases. We discuss in detail the zeroth, the first, and the second TMMs and provide phenomenological results for them based on the current extractions of TMDs. The results of this paper open new avenues for theoretical and phenomenological investigation of the three-dimensional and collinear hadron structures., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures

Historically, vineyards were compatible with soil conservation practices and multitrophic biodiversity, but vineyards are now generally eroded and biologically impoverished, making them more susceptible to pests and diseases. However, the idiosyncrasy of the wine sector places wine growers in a unique position to lead the adoption of a range of sustainable management strategies and, thus, to pioneer a wider transformation of the agricultural sector. In this article, we provide an overview of nature-based management strategies that may be used for the regeneration of the functioning and biodiversity of vineyards and that may also lead to improved plant nutrition, grape berry quality and the suppression of pathogens and pests. These strategies include the use of microbial and nonmicrobial biostimulants, fertilization with organic amendments as well as foliar fertilization with nature-based products, the use of cover crops and the reintegration of livestock in vineyards, especially sheep. We will also pay special attention to the implementation of circular economy in the vineyard in relation to the previously mentioned management strategies and will also discuss the importance of considering all these aspects from a holistic and integrative perspective, rather than taking them into account as single factors. Assuming the integral role of soils in the functioning of agroecosystems, soils will be considered transversally across all sections. Finally, we will argue that the time is now ripe for innovation from the public and private sectors to contribute to the sustainable management of vineyards while maintaining, or even improving, the profit margin for farmers and winemakers.

Abstract: Our understanding of Amazonian biogeography is quickly increasing, catalyzed by the growing use of genomic datasets, improved knowledge of species distributions, and the accumulation of new data on the geological and climatic history of the region. The high number of species in Amazonia and their intricate patterns of geographic distribution triggered the development of many diversification hypotheses that shaped historical biogeography as a discipline. Here, we present a historical overview of avian biogeographic studies in Amazonia, their recent advances, outstanding questions, and future directions. We focus on how new approaches have led to novel understandings of the distribution patterns and diversification processes that underpin avian diversity. We show how genomic tools are being used to establish new hypotheses about the drivers of diversification and highlight the importance of recent studies of birds in previously overlooked environments, such as floodplains and open vegetation enclaves. We emphasize the importance of gene flow, species traits, and habitat affinities in studying diversification processes to fully acknowledge the complexity of Amazonian ecosystems and their history. We then discuss the current gaps in Amazonian taxonomic and biogeographic knowledge, with a focus on the issues that we believe hinder our understanding of the field. Amazonia has been facing increasing levels of forest loss due to agricultural expansion, infrastructure development, mining, climate change, and illegal activities catalyzed by weak governance. To halt biodiversity loss, it is crucial to increase our knowledge of the natural history and biogeography of Amazonian species. We suggest increasing incentives for research and training at institutions based in the region, as well as the establishment of partnerships with governments, local communities, NGOs, and international institutions to bring diverse communities together to address crucial questions.

Abstract: D5.1 results from the coordination of technology development and integration across participants carried out between the 1st and the 12th month of the project. D5.1 is a first release of the work plan intended for adjustment, even for strong modifications as the project progresses. D5.1 will be the road map for the WP and project leaders to coordinate the integration across the sensors, platforms and stage-gates (deployments leading to TRL7, TRL8 and sea trials in a multi RI). Task 5.2, covering the deployments to TRL6 to TRL8 will be led by UiB and EMSO (M12-36). Task 5.3 and the field trials in a multi RI context will be led by EMSO and NOC (M30-54). The deployment (modification of the work plan, preparation and operation) will be the responsibility of the tasks leader in close coordination with WP2, WP3, WP4 and WP5 leaders. After a short introduction to the project and to the context, this document presents the method and successive steps established to carry out the validation of WP2, WP3 and WP4 developments (platforms, sensors and processes). The document includes: - a table presenting a short description of each development carried out and tested at sea during the project - a schedule showing the period envisaged for the deployment at sea - the list of equipment required and its affectation to the various deployments - an in-depth description of each deployment including all aspects: objectives, coordination, equipment provision, operation at sea, expected results and risk assessment

Abstract: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation harms the skin, causing oxidative damage, inflammation, and disruption of the skin’s barrier function. There is considerable interest in identifying new natural ingredients with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to serve as adjuvants in sunscreens. The flavonoid morin (1) can undergo structural modifications to enhance its biological properties. The aim of this study was to synthesize two new morin-Schiff base derivatives, morin oxime (2) and morin semicarbazone (3), comparing their photoprotective effects with that of the parent compound on UVB-exposed HaCaT keratinocytes. The chemical structure of the novel compounds was revealed based on spectroscopic data analysis. Our findings demonstrated that derivatives 2 and 3 enhanced the light absorption capability in the UV–visible (vis) range compared to 1. Tested compounds exhibited a higher scavenger capacity than Trolox. Moreover, pre-treatment with all compounds protected HaCaT cells from UVB-induced cell death. Compound 3 demonstrated the strongest antioxidant effect, reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and, subsequently, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Additionally, compounds 2 and 3 exhibited greater anti-inflammatory effects than compound 1, significantly reducing interleukin (IL)-6 production levels at all tested concentrations. These findings have demonstrated, for the first time, a promising photoprotective activity of two new Schiff base derivatives and suggest their use as natural sunscreen ingredients.

Abstract: Even though omissions are recognized as grounds for liability in Swedish tort law, they have been described as something special in the legal debate. One way to put it is that liability for omissions is an exception in regard to the general rule of liability for negligence. Nevertheless, the ever-growing mass of regulations in society paired with higher demands for safety can be assumed to give liability for omissions greater importance in the future. The topic for this paper is the difficulties that arise when the general rule of liability for negligence in Swedish tort law is applied on omissions. Amongst the problems treated are the definition of omissions, omissions in relation to causation, the higher degree of normative evaluation needed for establishing liability for omissions, and the general situations in which liability for omissions can be established. The study is centred around some earlier works by Swedish legal scholars and case law from the Swedish Supreme Court. Particularly, the case NJA 2013 s. 145 and some subsequent cases that refer to this case are examined and evaluated. The central conclusions drawn from the examination are collectedly presented in chapter six and are as follows. The distinction between omissions and positive action is vague due to the fact omissions can be rephrased as an active action and vice versa. This poses a reason for not differentiating the general rule of liability for negligence in regard to omissions. Even though the opposing view has been defended by some in the legal debate, practical reasons call for omissions to be viewed as able to cause damage in an ontological sense. This conclusion is based on the fact that the Supreme Court has explicitly discussed omissions and causation in recent caselaw. Abstract: Hepatic and pulmonary lesions are common in cetaceans, despite their poorly understood viral etiology. Herpesviruses (HV), adenoviruses (AdV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) are emerging agents in cetaceans, associated with liver and/or pulmonary damage in mammals. We isolated and molecularly tested DNA for HV and AdV (n = 218 individuals; 187 liver and 108 lung samples) and RNA for HEV (n = 147 animals; 147 liver samples) from six cetacean families. All animals stranded or were bycaught in Brazil between 2001 and 2021. Positive-animals were analyzed by histopathology. Statistical analyses assessed if the prevalence of viral infection could be associated with the variables: species, family, habitat, region, sex, and age group. All samples were negative for AdV and HEV. Overall, 8.7% (19/218) of the cetaceans were HV-positive (4.8% [9/187] liver and 11.1% [12/108] lung), without HV-associated lesions. HV-prevalence was statistically significant higher in Pontoporiidae (19.2%, 10/52) when compared to Delphinidae (4.1%, 5/121), and in southeastern (17.1%, 13/76)-the most industrialized Brazilian region-when compared to the northeastern region (2.4%, 3/126). This study broadens the herpesvirus host range in cetaceans, including its description in pygmy sperm whales (Kogia breviceps) and humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). Further studies must elucidate herpesvirus drivers in cetaceans.

Abstract: Background: IgE‐mediated food allergy (FA) is a global health concern with substantial individual and societal implications. While diverse intervention strategies have been researched, inconsistencies in reported outcomes limit evaluations of FA treatments. To streamline evaluations and promote consistent reporting, the Core Outcome Measures for Food Allergy (COMFA) initiative aimed to establish a Core Outcome Set (COS) for FA clinical trials and observational studies of interventions. Methods: The project involved a review of published clinical trials, trial protocols and qualitative literature. Outcomes found as a result of review were categorized and classified, informing a two‐round online‐modified Delphi process followed by hybrid consensus meeting to finalize the COS. Results: The literature review, taxonomy mapping and iterative discussions with diverse COMFA group yielded an initial list of 39 outcomes. The iterative online and in‐person meetings reduced the list to 13 outcomes for voting in the formal Delphi process. One more outcome was added based on participant suggestions after the first Delphi round. A total of 778 participants from 52 countries participated, with 442 participating in both Delphi rounds. No outcome met a priori criteria for inclusion, and one was excluded as a result of the Delphi. Thirteen outcomes were brought to the hybrid consensus meeting as a result of Delphi and two outcomes, ‘allergic symptoms’ and ‘quality of life’ achieved consensus for inclusion as ‘core’ outcomes. Conclusion: In addition to the mandatory reporting of adverse events for FA clinical trials or observational studies of interventions, allergic symptoms and quality of life should be measured as core outcomes. Future work by COMFA will define how best to measure these core outcomes.

17. Testing mirror symmetry in the Universe with LIGO-Virgo black-hole mergers

Abstract: Precessing black-hole mergers can produce gravitational waves with net circular polarization, understood as an imbalance between right- and left-handed amplitudes. According to the Cosmological Principle, such emission must average to zero across all binary mergers in our Universe to preserve mirror-reflection symmetry at very large scales. We present a new, independent gravitational-wave test of this hypothesis. Using a novel observable based on the Chern-Pontryagin pseudo-scalar, we measure the emission of net circular polarization across 47 black-hole mergers recently analyzed by Islam. et. al. with a state-of-the art model for precessing black-hole mergers. The average value obtained is consistent with zero. Remarkably, however, we find that at least $82\%$ of the analysed sources must have produced net circular polarization, which requires orbital precession. Of these, GW200129 shows strong evidence for mirror asymmetry, with a Bayes Factor of 12.6 or, equivalently, $93.1\%$ probability. We obtain consistent (although stronger) results of $97.5\%$ and $94.3\%$ respectively using public results on this event from Hannam et. al. and performing our own parameter inference. This finding further implies indirect evidence for spontaneous emission of circularly polarized photons out of the quantum vacuum. Abstract: Saturn has an intense and broad eastward equatorial jet with a complex three-dimensional structure mixed with time variability. The equatorial region experiences strong seasonal insolation variations enhanced by ring shadowing and three of the six known giant planetary-scale storms have developed in it. These factors make Saturn's equator a natural laboratory to test models of jets in giant planets. Here we report on a bright equatorial atmospheric feature imaged in 2015 that moved steadily at a high speed of 450 ms-1 not measured since 1980-81 with other equatorial clouds moving within an ample range of velocities. Radiative transfer models show that these motions occur at three altitude levels within the upper haze and clouds. We find that the peak of the jet (latitudes 10\degree N to 10\degree S) suffers intense vertical shears reaching +2.5 ms-1 km-1, two orders of magnitude higher than meridional shears, and temporal variability above 1 bar altitude level.

Abstract: The pressure sensors on Mars rover Perseverance measure the pressure field in the Jezero crater on regular hourly basis starting in sol 15 after landing. The present study extends up to sol 460 encompassing the range of solar longitudes from Ls 13{\deg} - 241{\deg} (Martian Year (MY) 36). The data show the changing daily pressure cycle, the sol-to-sol seasonal evolution of the mean pressure field driven by the CO2 sublimation and deposition cycle at the poles, the characterization of up to six components of the atmospheric tides and their relationship to dust content in the atmosphere. They also show the presence of wave disturbances with periods 2-5 sols, exploring their baroclinic nature, short period oscillations (mainly at night-time) in the range 8-24 minutes that we interpret as internal gravity waves, transient pressure drops with duration 1-150 s produced by vortices, and rapid turbulent fluctuations. We also analyze the effects on pressure measurements produced by a regional dust storm over Jezero at Ls 155{\deg}.

Abstract: BACKGROUND During the COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of patients received ambulatory treatment, highlighting the importance of primary health care (PHC). However, there is limited knowledge regarding PHC workload in Europe during this period. The utilization of COVID-19 PHC indicators could facilitate the efficient monitoring and coordination of the pandemic response. The objective of this study is to describe PHC indicators for disease surveillance and monitoring of COVID-19's impact in Europe. METHODS Descriptive, cross-sectional study employing data obtained through a semi-structured ad hoc questionnaire, which was collectively agreed upon by all participants. The study encompasses PHC settings in 31 European countries from March 2020 to August 2021. Key-informants from each country answered the questionnaire. Main outcome: the identification of any indicator used to describe PHC COVID-19 activity. RESULTS Out of the 31 countries surveyed, data on PHC information were obtained from 14. The principal indicators were: total number of cases within PHC (Belarus, Cyprus, Italy, Romania and Spain), number of follow-up cases (Croatia, Cyprus, Finland, Spain and Turkey), GP's COVID-19 tests referrals (Poland), proportion of COVID-19 cases among respiratory illnesses consultations (Norway and France), sick leaves issued by GPs (Romania and Spain) and examination and complementary tests (Cyprus). All COVID-19 cases were attended in PHC in Belarus and Italy. CONCLUSIONS The COVID-19 pandemic exposes a crucial deficiency in preparedness for infectious diseases in European health systems highlighting the inconsistent recording of indicators within PHC organizations. PHC standardized indicators and public data accessibility are urgently needed, conforming the foundation for an effective European-level health services response framework against future pandemics.

21. Las infraestructuras académicas del latinoamericanismo tras la pandemia

Abstract: This article tries to elucidate a first image of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Latin American studies by inserting them into the framework of global academic infrastructures. Weaving experience, theory, and a review of the data collected after the health crisis, I defend the thesis that understanding Latin American studies as an infrastructure reveals a more protracted process of transformation and disintegration that the pandemic only exacerbated. In the end, I outline some horizons on what routes the field could take to process the crisis and find ways to survive the deterioration of its institutions., Este artículo intenta elucidar una primera imagen del impacto de la pandemia del COVID-19 en el campo de estudios latinoamericanos, al insertarlos en el marco de las infraestructuras académicas globales. Trenzando experiencia, teoría y una revisión de los datos recogidos tras la crisis sanitaria, defiendo la tesis de que entender los estudios latinoamericanos como una infraestructura revela un proceso de transformación y desintegración más largo que la pandemia solo llegó a agudizar. Sobre el final, esbozo algunos horizontes sobre qué rutas podría tomar el campo para procesar la crisis y encontrar vías para sobrevivir el deterioro de sus instituciones.

22. Impact of soil texture on plant communities of Raphanus raphanistrum L

Abstract: Our soil study of the chromic soils located in the strip of land between Sierra Morena and the Guadalquivir Valley reveals a pH-value close to neutral in 25 samples. The pH-values are close to 5.5 only in the samples taken from the arenosols of the granitic batholith of Los Pedroches. However, it is the percentage of clay, sand and silt that explains the occurrence of grassland dominated by Raphanus raphanistrum, in the company of species with a psammophilous character such as Linaria spartea, Linaria amethystea and Brassica barrelieri. Our soil analysis reveals the presence of acid or base-poor soils. Consequently, the community of Raphanus raphanistrum found there displays an acidophilous, neutro-basophilous and subarenicolous character. Different types of sabulicolous plant communities appear as a result of the gradation of the soil texture. Since the Raphanus communities cannot be considered as genuinely sabulicolous, we have coined the term ‘subarenicolous’ to describe any plant community whose optimum sand content lies between 50% and 70%. The community of Linaria spartea and Raphanus rapha nistrum is neutro-basophilous and is found in at least the Marianic-Monchiquensean and North Hispalensean sectors. 23. Human-Algorithm Collaborative Bayesian Optimization for Engineering Systems

Abstract: Bayesian optimization has been successfully applied throughout Chemical Engineering for the optimization of functions that are expensive-to-evaluate, or where gradients are not easily obtainable. However, domain experts often possess valuable physical insights that are overlooked in fully automated decision-making approaches, necessitating the inclusion of human input. In this article we re-introduce the human back into the data-driven decision making loop by outlining an approach for collaborative Bayesian optimization. Our methodology exploits the hypothesis that humans are more efficient at making discrete choices rather than continuous ones and enables experts to influence critical early decisions. We apply high-throughput (batch) Bayesian optimization alongside discrete decision theory to enable domain experts to influence the selection of experiments. At every iteration we apply a multi-objective approach that results in a set of alternate solutions that have both high utility and are reasonably distinct. The expert then selects the desired solution for evaluation from this set, allowing for the inclusion of expert knowledge and improving accountability, whilst maintaining the advantages of Bayesian optimization. We demonstrate our approach across a number of applied and numerical case studies including bioprocess optimization and reactor geometry design, demonstrating that even in the case of an uninformed practitioner our algorithm recovers the regret of standard Bayesian optimization. Abstract: Transformers are vital assets for the reliable and efficient operation of power and energy systems. They support the integration of renewables to the grid through improved grid stability and operation efficiency. Monitoring the health of transformers is essential to ensure grid reliability and efficiency. Thermal insulation ageing is a key transformer failure mode, which is generally tracked by monitoring the hotspot temperature (HST). However, HST measurement is complex and expensive and often estimated from indirect measurements. Existing computationally-efficient HST models focus on space-agnostic thermal models, providing worst-case HST estimates. This article introduces an efficient spatio-temporal model for transformer winding temperature and ageing estimation, which leverages physics-based partial differential equations (PDEs) with data-driven Neural Networks (NN) in a Physics Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) configuration to improve prediction accuracy and acquire spatio-temporal resolution. The computational efficiency of the PINN model is improved through the implementation of the Residual-Based Attention scheme that accelerates the PINN model convergence. PINN based oil temperature predictions are used to estimate spatio-temporal transformer winding temperature values, which are validated through PDE resolution models and fiber optic sensor measurements, respectively. Furthermore, the spatio-temporal transformer ageing model is inferred, aiding transformer health management decision-making and providing insights into localized thermal ageing phenomena in the transformer insulation. 26. Gas turbine power cycles for retrofitting and repowering coal plants with post-combustion carbon dioxide capture

Abstract: A widely-proposed way to retrofit coal-fired power plants with post-combustion CO2 capture (PCC) is to supply all the electricity and heat required to operate the capture equipment from the existing steam cycle (an ‘integrated retrofit’), at the expense of a reduction in site power output. As an alternative, it is possible to add a gas turbine (GT) plant to maintain, or even increase, the net site power output. The GT can be integrated with the capture plant in various ways to supply all or part of the heat and power required for the capture and compression systems. But there is then the issue of how to capture the CO2 emissions from the added GT plant. In this study a novel retrofit configuration is proposed. The exhaust gas of the GT replaces part of the secondary air for the coal boiler and a common capture system is used for both coal- and natural gas-derived CO2. This new ‘GT flue gas windbox retrofit’ is based on the principles of previous hot windbox repowering proposals, with additional modifications to permit operation without extensive coal boiler modifications. To achieve this, the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) attached to GT is designed to maintain the main steam turbine flow rates and temperatures, to compensate for a necessary reduction in coal feed rates, and this, with the GT output, maintains the net power output of the site A techno-economic analysis of coal plants retrofitted with GT power cycles shows that these ‘power matched’ retrofits can be competitive with integrated retrofits at lower natural gas prices (as is now the case in North America). In particular, the novel GT flue gas windbox retrofit provides a promising alternative for adapting integrated capture retrofits that are initially designed for flexible operation with zero to full (~90%) capture (as at the Boundary Dam 3 unit) for subsequent operation only with full capture. In this case the addition of a GT flue gas windbox retrofit will restore the full power output of the site with full CO2 capture and using the original capture plant. In general, techno-economic analysis shows that the economic performance of GT retrofit options depends on the site power export capacity. If there is no limit on power export then retrofits may advantageously also include an additional steam cycle, to give a combined cycle with the GT, otherwise retrofits with a single pressure HRSG producing process steam only are preferred.

27. Synthesis and characterisation of hierarchical zeolitic materials for heavy metals adsorption

Abstract: This thesis explains a method based on the homogenisation of zeta potential charges on carbon supports for the production of hierarchical structured zeolitic composites. The modiﬁcation of carbons’ surface chemistry allowed zeolite particles to be ﬁxed to the support by electrostatic interactions. In order to achieve this, the size reduction of zeolite particles was carried out by two diﬀerent methods: a) ball milling and b) a synthetic route to produce zeolite colloidal dispersions. Also, the seeding method, based on hydrothermal growth was compared. The prepared materials in this work were designed to be used in the sorption of cations, and to allow vitriﬁcation and thereby reduce the ﬁnal adsorbent volume. Results showed that a large pollutant amount can be trapped using a lower volume of material reducing costs and ﬁnal waste disposal. The zeolites used in this work were selected based on their low density framework and low Si/Al ratio. Synthetic zeolites A, Y and clinoptilolite were successfully produced. Natural clinoptilolite was also utilised in this work. Also, zeolite A was produced at nanometre scale following the clear solutions method. All materials were successfully incorporated onto supports to produce multimodal porosity materials. The hierarchical modiﬁcation of natural clinoptilolite, following a straightforward and nonexpensive methodology, is one the most signiﬁcant contributions of this work. Carbons are used as supports due to their high surface area, they can be obtained from low-cost sources such as agroindustrial wastes and carbons allow volume reduction if materials are vitriﬁed at high temperatures. In this work, carbons were produced from corn cob and husk, sugar cane bagasse, cherry stones, date stones and hazelnut shells. The prepared composite materials were tested in the removal of toxic ions from water solutions: cobalt, copper and caesium ions were eﬀectively removed from aqueous media. Adsorption experiments showed that the distribution of supported zeolite particles improved their uptake eﬃciency and capacity. The kinetic studies revealed an enhanced rate constant for carbon-zeolites composites in comparison with pure zeolites. Diﬀusivity results suggested that mass transfer characteristics are modiﬁed by using hierarchical porous materials; results showed that particle size or support nature can modify diﬀusion resistances, reducing intraparticle diﬀusion and accelerating the overall kinetic processes. Adsorption equilibrium data was correlated using Langmuir and Freundlich models.

Abstract: Mitochondrial depolarization can initiate reversal activity of ATP synthase, depleting ATP by its hydrolysis. We have recently shown that increased ATP hydrolysis contributes to ATP depletion leading to a maladaptation in mitochondrial disorders, where maximal hydrolytic capacity per CV content is increasing. However, despite its importance, ATP hydrolysis is not a commonly studied parameter because of the limitations of the currently available methods. Methods that measure CV hydrolytic activity indirectly require the isolation of mitochondria and involve the introduction of detergents, preventing their utilization in clinical studies or any high-throughput analyses. Here, we describe a novel approach to assess maximal ATP hydrolytic capacity and maximal respiratory capacity in a single assay in cell lysates, PBMCs, and tissue homogenates that were previously frozen. The methodology described here has the potential to be used in clinical samples to determine adaptive and maladaptive adjustments of CV function in diseases, with the added benefit of being able to use frozen samples in a high-throughput manner and to explore ATP hydrolysis as a drug target for disease treatment.

Abstract: Background: Given the diagnostic accuracy of HPV-DNA tests in terms of self-collected samples, in order to implement self-sampling in cervical screening programs, the standardization of the pre-analytical phase, including decisions concerning the choice of medium, the volume of elution, and storage conditions, are necessary, in addition to understanding the potential factors involved in acceptability by women. On this basis, we carried out a cross-sectional study to assess (i) the stability of dry vaginal self-collected samples stored at room temperature for up to 4 weeks after elution in 2 mL of eNat® (Copan) medium, and (ii) the acceptability of self-collection in enrolled women. Methods: 185 women were enrolled in the LILT (Italian League Against Tumors) regional project. A self-sampling kit, including a dry FLOQSwab® (Copan), instructions for use, and a satisfaction questionnaire, were supplied for each woman and sent by mail to the laboratory. The HPV-DNA test was carried out using the AnyplexTM II HPV HR (Seegene) kit. To evaluate the specimen’s stability, 185 dry vaginal swabs were eluted in eNat®, a lyses-based molecular medium and tested for HPV detection at two different time points (<6 days and 1 month after elution). The Cohen’s Kappa coefficients and McNemar test were used to assess the agreement of HPV-DNA at different times. Results: We found high agreement in terms of HPV-DNA results among the samples tested at two different time points (Cohen K = 0.98; p < 0.0001). Moreover, most of the women found it easy to use self-collection devices and the pictorial instructions clear to understand. Approximately half of the enrolled women declared preferring self-sampling to clinician-collected methods. Conclusion: Our results display the high reliability and accuracy of HPV-DNA tests using dry vaginal self-collection FLOQSwabs® devices eluted in 2 mL of molecular medium. Abstract: Anaphylaxis is among the most severe manifestations of allergic disorders, but its molecular basis remains largely unknown and reliable diagnostic markers are not currently available. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate several pathophysiological processes and have been proposed as non-invasive biomarkers. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate their involvement in anaphylactic reaction and their value as biomarkers.

Abstract: Background: During the first coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic wave, an unprecedented number of patients with respiratory failure due to a new, highly contagious virus needed hospitalization and intensive care unit (ICU) admission. The aim of the present study was to describe the communication and visiting policies of Italian intensive care units (ICUs) during the first COVID-19 pandemic wave and national lockdown and compare these data with prepandemic conditions. Methods: A national web-based survey was conducted among 290 Italian hospitals. Each ICU (active between February 24 and May 31, 2020) was encouraged to complete an individual questionnaire inquiring the hospital/ICU structure/organization, communication/visiting habits and the role of clinical psychology prior to, and during the first COVID-19 pandemic wave. Results: Two hundred and nine ICUs from 154 hospitals (53% of the contacted hospitals) completed the survey (202 adult and 7 pediatric ICUs). Among adult ICUs, 60% were dedicated to COVID-19 patients, 21% were dedicated to patients without COVID-19 and 19% were dedicated to both categories (Mixed). A total of 11,102 adult patients were admitted to the participating ICUs during the study period and only approximately 6% of patients received at least one visit. Communication with family members was guaranteed daily through an increased use of electronic devices and was preferentially addressed to the same family member. Compared to the prepandemic period, clinical psychologists supported physicians more often regarding communication with family members. Fewer patients received at least one visit from family members in COVID and mixed-ICUs than in non-COVID ICUs, l (0 [0-6]%, 0 [0-4]% and 11 [2-25]%, respectively, p < 0.001). Abstract: Natural products are a diverse class of biologically produced compounds that participate in fundamental biological processes such as cell signaling, nutrient acquisition, and interference competition. Unique triple-bond functionalities like isonitriles and alkynes often drive bioactivity and may serve as indicators of novel chemical logic and enzymatic machinery. Yet, the biosynthetic underpinnings of these groups remain only partially understood, constraining the opportunity to rationally engineer biomolecules with these functionalities for applications in pharmaceuticals, bioorthogonal chemistry, and other value-added chemical processes. Here, we focus our review on characterized biosynthetic pathways for isonitrile and alkyne functionalities, their bioorthogonal transformations, and prospects for engineering their biosynthetic machinery for biotechnological applications.

Abstract: Background: Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-Kp) is endemic globally, causing severe infections in hospitalized patients. Surveillance programs help monitor and promptly identify the emergence of new clones. We reported the rapid spread of a novel clone of K. pneumoniae co-harbouring class A and D carbapenemases in colonized patients, and the potential risk factors involved in the development of infections. Methods: Rectal swabs were used for microbiological analyses and detection of the most common carbapenemase encoding genes by real-time PCR (i.e., blaKPC, blaOXA-48, blaNDM, blaVIM, and blaIMP). All strains co-harbouring KPC and OXA-48 genes were evaluated. For each patient, the following variables were collected: age, sex, length and ward of stay, device use, and outcome. Clonality of CR-Kp was assessed by preliminary pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), followed by multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) analyses. Results: A total of 127 isolates of K. pneumoniae co-harbouring KPC and OXA-48 were collected between September 2019 and December 2020. The median age (IQR) of patients was 70 (61–77). More than 40% of patients were admitted to intensive care unit (ICU). Around 25% of patients developed an invasive infection, the majority of which were respiratory tract infections (17/31; 54.8%). ICU stay and invasive infection increased the risk of mortality (OR: 5.39, 95% CI: 2.42–12.00; OR 6.12, 95% CI: 2.55–14.69, respectively; p-value ≤ 0.001). The antibiotic susceptibility test showed a resistance profile for almost all antibiotics considered. Monoclonal origin was confirmed by PFGE and MLST showing a similar restriction pattern and belonging to ST-512. Conclusions: We report the spread and the marked antibiotic resistance profiles of K. pneumoniae strains co-producing KPC and OXA-48. Abstract: Age-related injuries are often connected to alterations in redox homeostasis. The imbalance between free radical oxygen species and endogenous antioxidants defenses could be associated with a growing risk of transient ischemic attack and stroke. In this context, a daily supply of dietary antioxidants could counteract oxidative stress occurring during ischemia/reperfusion injury (I/R), preventing brain damage. Here we investigated the potential antioxidant properties of coffee-derived circulating metabolites and a coffee pulp phytoextract, testing their efficacy as ROS scavengers in an in vitro model of ischemia. Indeed, the coffee fruit is an important source of phenolic compounds, such as chlorogenic acids, present both in the brewed seed and in the discarded pulp. Therefore, rat brain endothelial cells, subjected to oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD) and recovery (ogR) to mimic reperfusion, were pretreated or not with coffee by-products. The results indicate that, under OGD/ogR, the ROS accumulation was reduced by coffee by-product. Additionally, the coffee extract activated the Nrf2 antioxidant pathway via Erk and Akt kinases phosphorylation, as shown by increased Nrf2 and HO-1 protein levels. The data indicate that the daily intake of coffee by-products as a dietary food supplement represents a potential nutritional strategy to counteract aging.

Abstract: Quercus robur/Quercus petraea and Pinus sylvestris are widely distributed and economically important tree species in Europe co-occurring on mesotrophic, xeric and mesic sites. Increasing dry conditions may reduce their growth, but growth reductions may be modified by mixture, competition and site conditions. The annual diameter growth in monospecific and mixed stands along an ecological gradient with mean annual temperatures ranging from 5.5 °C to 11.5 °C was investigated in this study. On 36 triplets (108 plots), trees were cored and the year-ring series were cross-dated, resulting in year-ring series of 785 and 804 trees for Q. spp. and P. sylvestris, respectively. A generalized additive model with a logarithmic link was fit to the data with random effects for the intercept at the triplet, year and tree level and a random slope for the covariate age for each tree; the Tweedie-distribution was used. The final model explained 87 % of the total variation in diameter increment for both tree species. Significant covariates were age, climate variables (long-term mean, monthly), local competition variables, relative dbh, mixture, stand structure and interactions thereof. Tree growth declined with age and local density and increased with social position. It was positively influenced by mixture and structural diversity (Gini coefficient); mixture effects were significant for P. sylvestris only. The influence of potential evapotranspiration (PET) in spring and autumn on tree growth was positive and non-linear, whereas tree growth sharply decreased with increasing PET in June, which proved to be the most influential month on tree growth along the whole ecological gradient. Interactions of PET with tree social position (relative dbh) were significant in July and September for Q. spp. and in April for P. sylvestris. Comparative neuroscience can overcome this barrier by studying multiple species to differentiate between species-specific and general mechanisms of neural circuit functioning. Targeted manipulation of neural circuits often depends on genetic dissection, and use of this technique has been restricted to only a few model species, limiting its application in comparative research. However, ongoing advances in genomics make genetic dissection attainable in a growing number of species. To demonstrate the potential of comparative gene editing approaches, we developed a viral-mediated CRISPR/Cas9 strategy that is predicted to target the oxytocin receptor (Oxtr) gene in >80 rodent species. This strategy specifically reduced OXTR levels in all evaluated species (n = 6) without causing gross neuronal toxicity. Thus, we show that CRISPR/Cas9-based tools can function in multiple species simultaneously. Thereby, we hope to encourage comparative gene editing and improve the translatability of neuroscientific research.

Abstract: The ratio R = gamma(K-S -> pi e nu)/gamma(KS -> pi(+)pi(-)) has been measured with a sample of 300 million KS mesons produced in phi -KLKS decays recorded by the KLOE experiment at the DA Phi NE e(+)e(-) collider. K-S -> pi e nu events are selected by a boosted decision tree built with kinematic variables and time-of-flight measurements. Data control samples of K-L -> pi e nu decays are used to evaluate signal selection efficiencies. With 49647 +/- 316 signal events we measure R = (1.0421 +/- 0.0066(stat) +/- 0.0075(syst)) x 10(-3). The combination with our previous measurement gives R = (1.0338 +/- 0.0054(stat) +/- 0.0064(syst)) x 10(-3). From this value we derive the branching fraction B(K-S -> pi e nu) = (7.153 +/- 0.037(stat)+/- 0.044(syst)) x 10(-4) and f(+)(0)|V-us| = 0.2170 +/- 0.009.

Abstract: Contains fulltext : 296350.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access), Assessing a patient's musculoskeletal function during over-ground walking is a primary objective in post-stroke rehabilitation, due to the importance of walking recovery for everyday life. However, the quantitative assessment of musculoskeletal function currently requires lab-constrained equipment, and labor-intensive analyses, which hampers assessment in standard clinical settings. The development of fully wearable systems for the online estimation of muscle-tendon forces and resulting joint torque would aid clinical assessment of motor recovery, it would enhance the detection of neuro-muscular anomalies and it would consequently enable highly personalized treatments. Here, we present a wearable technology that combines (1) a soft garment for the human leg sensorized with 64 flexible and dry electromyography (EMG) electrodes, (2) a generalized and automated algorithm for the localization of leg muscle sites, and (3) an EMG-driven musculoskeletal modeling framework for the estimation of ankle dorsi-plantar flexion torques. Our results showed that the automated clustering algorithm could detect muscle locations in both healthy and post-stroke individuals. The estimated muscle-specific EMG envelopes could be used to drive forward person-specific musculoskeletal models and estimate resulting joint torques accurately across all healthy and post-stroke individuals and across different walking speeds (R2 > 0.82 and RMSD < 0.16). The technology we proposed opens new avenues for automated muscle localization and quantitative musculoskeletal function assessment during gait in both healthy and neurologically impaired individuals.

Abstract: BackgroundRock-dwelling microorganisms are key players in ecosystem functioning of Antarctic ice free-areas. Yet, little is known about their diversity and ecology, and further still, viruses in these communities have been largely unexplored despite important roles related to host metabolism and nutrient cycling. To begin to address this, we present a large-scale viral catalog from Antarctic rock microbial communities.ResultsWe performed metagenomic analyses on rocks from across Antarctica representing a broad range of environmental and spatial conditions, and which resulted in a predicted viral catalog comprising > 75,000 viral operational taxonomic units (vOTUS). We found largely undescribed, highly diverse and spatially structured virus communities which had predicted auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs) with functions indicating that they may be potentially influencing bacterial adaptation and biogeochemistry.ConclusionThis catalog lays the foundation for expanding knowledge of virosphere diversity, function, spatial ecology, and dynamics in extreme environments. This work serves as a step towards exploring adaptability of microbial communities in the face of a changing climate. Video Abstract.

47. Off-axis representation of hyperbolic mirror shapes for X-ray beamlines.

Abstract: Mirror-centered, closed-form expressions for hyperbolic surfaces used in X-ray beamlines have been derived. Hyperbolic mirrors create a virtual focus or source point and can be used to lengthen or shorten the effective focal distance of a compound optical system. The derivations here express off-axis segments of a hyperbolic surface in terms of the real and virtual focal distances and the incident glancing angle at the center of the mirror. Conventional mathematical expressions of hyperbolic shapes describe the surfaces in Cartesian or polar coordinates centered on an axis of symmetry, necessitating cumbersome rotation and translation to mirror-centered coordinates. The representation presented here, with zero slope and the origin at the central point, is most convenient for modeling, metrology, aberration correction, and general surface analysis of off-axis configurations. The direct derivation avoids the need for nested coordinate transforms. A series expansion provides a helpful approximation; the coefficients of the implicit equation are also provided.

Abstract: The maintenance of cellular function relies on the close regulation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis and hydrolysis. ATP hydrolysis by mitochondrial ATP Synthase (CV) is induced by loss of proton motive force and inhibited by the mitochondrial protein ATPase inhibitor (ATPIF1). The extent of CV hydrolytic activity and its impact on cellular energetics remains unknown due to the lack of selective hydrolysis inhibitors of CV. We find that CV hydrolytic activity takes place in coupled intact mitochondria and is increased by respiratory chain defects. We identified (+)-Epicatechin as a selective inhibitor of ATP hydrolysis that binds CV while preventing the binding of ATPIF1. In cells with Complex-III deficiency, we show that inhibition of CV hydrolytic activity by (+)-Epichatechin is sufficient to restore ATP content without restoring respiratory function. Inhibition of CV-ATP hydrolysis in a mouse model of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is sufficient to improve muscle force without any increase in mitochondrial content. We conclude that the impact of compromised mitochondrial respiration can be lessened using hydrolysis-selective inhibitors of CV.

Abstract: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease in the world. High levels of free fatty acids in the liver impair hepatic lysosomal acidification and reduce autophagic flux. We investigate whether restoration of lysosomal function in NAFLD recovers autophagic flux, mitochondrial function, and insulin sensitivity. Here, we report the synthesis of novel biodegradable acid-activated acidifying nanoparticles (acNPs) as a lysosome targeting treatment to restore lysosomal acidity and autophagy. The acNPs, composed of fluorinated polyesters, remain inactive at plasma pH, and only become activated in lysosomes after endocytosis. Specifically, they degrade at pH of ~6 characteristic of dysfunctional lysosomes, to further acidify and enhance the function of lysosomes. In established in vivo high fat diet mouse models of NAFLD, re-acidification of lysosomes via acNP treatment restores autophagy and mitochondria function to lean, healthy levels. This restoration, concurrent with reversal of fasting hyperglycemia and hepatic steatosis, indicates the potential use of acNPs as a first-in-kind therapeutic for NAFLD.

50. Glide Symmetry Applied to the Design of Common-Mode Rejection Filters Based on Complementary Split-Ring Resonators

Abstract: In this brief, glide symmetry is applied to design common-mode rejection filters based on defected ground structures with bandstop response. To this aim, complementary split-ring resonators are chosen as the basic components for common-mode rejection. To illustrate the advantages of using glide symmetry, three implementations are studied and compared. The results reveal that glide symmetry offers the best performance in terms of common-mode rejection level and fractional bandwidth. Furthermore, glide symmetry barely affects the integrity of the differential mode. A prototype of each of the considered symmetries has been designed, simulated, and tested for practical validation.
