1. Novel crop rotations to enhance the provision of multiple ecosystem services underpinning arable production

Abstract: Given the challenges posed to agriculture by future climatic changes, the need to increase production due to a growing population and at the same time, reduce environmental impacts and preserve biodiversity, it is vital that more sustainable and resilient food production systems are in place. Ecological intensification is an approach proposed to partially replace external inputs (i.e. synthetic fertiliser and pesticides) with the provision of biodiversity derived ecosystem services, to either maintain or increase food production. One promising management practice is crop diversification, both temporally and spatially, which has the potential to improve the provision of multiple ecosystem services underpinning agricultural production and to confer resilience to food production systems. Studies conducted over three years, compared the ability of three 4-year crop rotations, along a diversity gradient (simple, moderate and diverse), to enhance the provision of multiple ecosystem services and increase resilience. The ability of each rotation to increase soil ecosystem services (soil fertility), pollination service, resilience under abiotic stresses and provide food resources for pollinators was assessed. Experiments were conducted at the University of Reading's Crop Research Unit, Sonning, Berkshire, UK in a free draining sandy/silty loam overlaying coarse red-brown sand of the Sonning series. Berkshire has a temperate climate with annual mean temperatures ranging between 6.7 °C and 14.5°C. More diverse crop rotations resulted in higher nutrient cycling and consequently higher nutrient availability (mineral nitrogen) to the crops. However, this presented a trade-off with soil carbon storage in the short term. Increased crop diversity resulted in higher yield stability with reduced external inputs, under varying climatic conditions, with yield increases of 1 t/ha on average, and improved system resilience, but it did not increase the provision of soil fertility and pest regulation under abiotic stresses (heat and drought). Increased diversity and insect pollination had a positive impact on oilseed rape yield components and higher diversity also led to a more stable provision of nectar resources throughout the pollinator flight season, attracting more bumblebees than less diverse rotations. The results presented here suggest that crop diversification is likely to be an important tool in the ecological intensification of agriculture. However, it will need to be combined with other strategies, both at local (e.g. reduced tillage practices and flower strips) and at a landscape (e.g. diversification of flowering crops) level, if ecological intensification is to be implemented broadly and successfully. Results also highlight the urgent need for future long-term research on the potential benefits of crop diversification.

Abstract: Background: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been widely used in patients with COVID-19, but uncertainty remains about the determinants of in-hospital mortality and data on post-discharge outcomes are scarce. The aims of this study were to investigate the variables associated with in-hospital outcomes in patients who received ECMO during the first wave of COVID-19 and to describe the status of patients 6 months after ECMO initiation. Methods: EuroECMO-COVID is a prospective, multicentre, observational study developed by the European Extracorporeal Life Support Organization. This study was based on data from patients aged 16 years or older who received ECMO support for refractory COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic—from March 1 to Sept 13, 2020—at 133 centres in 21 countries. In-hospital mortality and mortality 6 months after ECMO initiation were the primary outcomes. Mixed-Cox proportional hazards models were used to investigate associations between patient and management-related variables (eg, patient demographics, comorbidities, pre-ECMO status, and ECMO characteristics and complications) and in-hospital deaths. Survival status at 6 months was established through patient contact or institutional charts review. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04366921, and is ongoing. Findings: Between March 1 and Sept 13, 2020, 1215 patients (942 [78%] men and 267 [22%] women; median age 53 years [IQR 46–60]) were included in the study. Median ECMO duration was 15 days (IQR 8–27). 602 (50%) of 1215 patients died in hospital, and 852 (74%) patients had at least one complication. Multiorgan failure was the leading cause of death (192 [36%] of 528 patients who died with available data). In mixed-Cox analyses, age of 60 years or older, use of inotropes and vasopressors before ECMO initiation, chronic renal failure, and time from intubation to ECMO initiation of 4 days or more were associated with higher in-hospital mortality. 613 patients

3. Erholungsmomente, ausgerichtet auf die kindlichen Bedürfnisse sowie die Gehirnentwicklung

Abstract: In der vorliegenden Bachelorarbeit wird erörtert, welche Aspekte einen gehirn- und kindgerechten Unterricht beeinflussen bzw. ermöglichen. Aufgrund des theoretischen Hintergrunds kann festgehalten werden, dass ein gehirn- und kindgerechter Unterricht dann stattfindet, wenn die neuronalen Strukturen sowie die Entwicklung des Gehirns berücksichtigt werden und von den kindlichen Bedürfnissen ausgegangen wird. Dabei soll ein bewegter, spielerischer und handlungsorientierter Unterricht stattfinden, welcher am Vorwissen und an den Interessen der Kinder anknüpft und wodurch die Motivation und Lernbereitschaft der Schülerinnen und Schüler beeinflusst werden kann. Im Sinne einer produktorientierten Umsetzung wurde ausgehend vom Kind eine Ideensammlung an möglichen Erholungsmomenten in Form eines Buches erstellt, welches auf die Bereiche Bewegung, soziale Interaktionen und Entspannung ausgerichtet ist. Ausgehend vom Kind im Unterstufenalter ist das Produkt spontan im Unterricht einsetzbar, um flexibel auf die Schülerinnen und Schüler und deren Bedürfnisse sowie das Unterrichtsgeschehen einzugehen. So können den Lernenden, ausgehend von ihren entwicklungs- und altersbedingten kognitiven Fähigkeiten sowie ihren kindlichen Bedürfnissen, vielfältige Erholungsmomente gewährt werden. Durch den Einsatz des Produkts bzw. das Ermöglichen solcher Erholungsmomente im Unterrichtsalltag, entsteht ein abwechslungsreicher Unterricht, wodurch sich eine angenehme Lernatmosphäre und ein ausgeglichenes und angenehmes Miteinander kultiviert.

6. La Revista Puertorriqueña de Psicología y la historia de la psicología en Puerto Rico

Abstract: The history of psychology is a new field of research in Latin America, but it is in full development. The Puerto Rican Journal of Psychology (reps) attests to this fact when we see few articles on this subject since its founding in 1981. However, in 1993-94 a special issue with a dozen articles was published followed by another special issue shortly after, in 2006, with more than twenty articles. Since then, there has been a constant, albeit reduced, presence of historiographic articles. The objective of this work was to carry out an ex-post-facto historical research, for which we selected all the articles (n = 69) about history of psychology in the reps, in order to analyze their content, their distribution among authors (n = 54) as well as their gender and the institutions to which they belong. The main results show that there is a concentration of historiographic publications by a small number of authors from few institutions in Puerto Rico. The most frequent topics were the categories of "characters", "professional organization" and "teaching of psychology", which suggests a historiography involved with the institutionalization of the discipline of psychology., La historia de la psicología es un campo de investigación nuevo en América Latina, pero está en pleno desarrollo. La Revista Puertorriqueña de Psicología (reps) atestigua este hecho cuando vemos que hay pocos artículos sobre este tema desde su fundación en 1981. Sin embargo, en el 1993-94 se publicó un número especial sobre la historia de la psicología en Puerto Rico con 12 artículos, seguido por una segunda publicación especial en el 2006 con más de 20 artículos. A partir de estos dos números especiales, hay una presencia constante, aunque reducida, de artículos historiográficos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue hacer una investigación ex-post-facto, histórica, en la cual evaluamos todos los artículos (n = 69) sobre historia de la psicología en la reps, a fin de analizar su contenido, distribución de las autorías (n = 54), género y las instituciones de procedencia. Los principales resultados apuntan que hay una concentración de publicaciones historiográficas de un número reducido de autorías y de pocas instituciones de Puerto Rico. En relación al contenido, los temas más frecuentes fueron las categorías “personajes”, “organización profesional” y “enseñanza de Psicología”, lo que sugiere una historiografía involucrada con la institucionalización de la disciplina psicológica.

7. Sparse linear mixed model selection via streamlined variational Bayes

Abstract: Linear mixed models are a versatile statistical tool to study data by accounting for fixed effects and random effects from multiple sources of variability. In many situations, a large number of candidate fixed effects is available and it is of interest to select a parsimonious subset of those being effectively relevant for predicting the response variable. Variational approximations facilitate fast approximate Bayesian inference for the parameters of a variety of statistical models, including linear mixed models. However, for models having a high number of fixed or random effects, simple application of standard variational inference principles does not lead to fast approximate inference algorithms, due to the size of model design matrices and inefficient treatment of sparse matrix problems arising from the required approximating density parameters updates. We illustrate how recently developed streamlined variational inference procedures can be generalized to make fast and accurate inference for the parameters of linear mixed models with nested random effects and global-local priors for Bayesian fixed effects selection. Our variational inference algorithms achieve convergence to the same optima of their standard imple-mentations, although with significantly lower computational effort, mem-ory usage and time, especially for large numbers of random effects. Using simulated and real data examples, we assess the quality of automated procedures for fixed effects selection that are free from hyperparameters tuning and only rely upon variational posterior approximations. Moreover, we show high accuracy of variational approximations against model fitting via Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling.

Abstract: La Corte di Cassazione ha chiarito che il credito d'imposta in materia di accise è di tipo “revolving”, nel senso che il credito d’imposta emergente dalla dichiarazione di consumo annuale va a costituire, nelle dichiarazioni di consumo per gli anni successivi, la componente di un nuovo saldo creditorio emergente da tale ultima dichiarazione, sicché il termine di decadenza biennale di cui all’art. 14, comma 2, D.Lgs. n. 504/1995 (c.d. T.U.A.) non trova applicazione.

Abstract: Il legittimo affidamento doganale, di cui all’art. 220, par. 2, lett. b), CDC, consente di escludere il recupero, a posteriori, dei dazi doganali allorquando l’Autorita` doganale abbia commesso un errore che non poteva essere ragionevolmente scoperto dal contribuente, avendo questi agito in buona fede e avendo rispettato tutte le disposizioni previste dalla normativa in vigore circa la dichiarazione doganale. L’errore dell’Amministrazione doganale deve consistere in un comportamento “attivo”, non potendosi ravvisare l’errore in ipotesi di comportamenti meramente passivi o nell’ipotesi di ricevimento di dichiarazioni inesatte del debitore, nonche ́nel caso di precedenti accessi e verifiche in cui non siano state riscontrate irregolarita` tributarie commesse dal contribuente.

Abstract: Nell'ipotesi in cui la dichiarazione dei redditi si caratterizzi per errori od omissioni, il contribuente può presentare la dichiarazione integrativa entro e non oltre i termini di cui all'art. 43, D.P.R. n. 600/1973 se questa è diretta ad evitare un danno per l'Amministrazione finanziaria. Al contrario, se l'integrativa è diretta ad emendare errori od omissioni in danno del contribuente, l'emendabilità è preclusa oltre il termine di presentazione della dichiarazione per il periodo d'imposta successivo. La disciplina del D.L. 193/2016, che ha uniformato i termini per le integrative, è irretroattiva, ma, per il passato, il contribuente può esercitare il diritto al rimborso o far valere gli errori dichiarativi in sede di processo tributario.

Abstract: La tassazione del tabacco e dei prodotti assimilati rappresenta un tema di estrema rilevanza, che forma oggetto di ampi dibattiti sia a livello interno che a livello europeo. Nell'ambito di tale settore, poco esplorato dalla dottrina, lo studio indaga la struttura di tassazione del tabacco in Italia ed in Europa, al fine di comprendere come si articoli il prelievo impositivo e quali siano le prospettive di riforma del sistema, sia con riguardo ai prodotti tradizionali sia con riferimento ai prodotti succedanei al tabacco (E-cig e Heat-not-burn) comparsi sul mercato negli ultimi anni.

Abstract: IntroductionCluster randomized crossover trials are often faced with a dilemma when selecting an optimal model of consent, as the traditional model of obtaining informed consent from participant's before initiating any trial related activities may not be suitable. We describe our experience of engaging patient advisors to identify an optimal model of consent for the PREP-IT trials. This paper also examines surrogate measures of success for the selected model of consent.MethodsThe PREP-IT program consists of two multi-center cluster randomized crossover trials that engaged patient advisors to determine an optimal model of consent. Patient advisors and stakeholders met regularly and reached consensus on decisions related to the trial design including the model for consent. Patient advisors provided valuable insight on how key decisions on trial design and conduct would be received by participants and the impact these decisions will have.ResultsPatient advisors, together with stakeholders, reviewed the pros and cons and the requirements for the traditional model of consent, deferred consent, and waiver of consent. Collectively, they agreed upon a deferred consent model, in which patients may be approached for consent after their fracture surgery and prior to data collection. The consent rate in PREP-IT is 80.7%, and 0.67% of participants have withdrawn consent for participation.DiscussionInvolvement of patient advisors in the development of an optimal model of consent has been successful. Engagement of patient advisors is recommended for other large trials where the traditional model of consent may not be optimal.

Abstract: Technological innovations applied to seeds has been supported in Brazil. The establishment of legal mechanisms of intellectual protection and rules to commercialize plants and seeds were responsible for the growth of research and development of new crops. The soybean is the main crop produced in the past years in Brazil and, for this reason, the main goal of this research is to show the scenario of innovation technology of soybean seeds, highlighting the protection and records of crops in Brazil. The scope of our analysis reaches the period between 1998 to 2018.The questionnaire survey of quantitative approach and descriptive strategy was collected based on information from CultivarWeb database (in special from SNPC and RNC) from Ministério da Agricultura Pecuária e Abastecimento – MAPA (Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply). The secondary data were worked on Excel® Software by using descriptive statistics. The result of this questionnaire survey showed that EMBRAPA (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) is the main public institution active in seed innovations and leader with the most important protection certifications and soybean crop records in Brazil. We also observed strong participation from foreign companies in this market, especially the ones that support the protection and record of transgenic soybean crops. We concluded that the number of records of soybean crop commercialization are higher than the protection certification., As inovações tecnológicas em sementes têm sido incentivadas pelo Brasil. O estabelecimento de mecanismos legais de proteção da propriedade intelectual e regras para a comercialização de plantas e sementes foram responsáveis pelo crescimento de pesquisas e desenvolvimento de novas cultivares. A soja é a principal cultura produzida nos últimos anos no país e, por esse motivo, este estudo teve como objetivo demonstrar o cenário das inovações tecnológicas em sementes de soja, evidenciando a proteção e os registros das cultivares no Brasil no período de 1998 a 2018. A pesquisa de abordagem quantitativa e estratégia descritiva telematizada foi desenvolvida com as informações contidas na base de dados CultivarWeb (em especial no SNPC e RNC) do Ministério da Agricultura Pecuária e Abastecimento – MAPA. Os dados secundários foram tabulados no software Excel® por meio da estatística descritiva. Os resultados evidenciaram que a EMBRAPA é a principal instituição pública atuante nas inovações em sementes e titular com maior número de certificados de proteção e registros de cultivar soja no país. Verificou-se também a forte participação de empresas estrangeiras nesse mercado, em especial na proteção e registro de cultivar de soja transgênica. Concluiu-se ainda que o número de registros para comercialização da cultivar soja são maiores que os certificados de proteção.

Abstract: Nanodisc technology was implemented as a platform for voltage nanosensors. A fluorescence (Förster) resonance energy transfer (FRET)- based voltage-sensing scheme employing fluorescent nanodiscs and the hydrophobic ion dipicrylamine was developed and utilized to optically record membrane potentials on the single-nanodisc level. Ensemble and single-nanosensor recordings were demonstrated for HEK293 cells and primary cortical neuron cells. Conjugation of nanodiscs to anti-GABAA antibodies allowed for site-specific membrane potential measurements from postsynaptic sites.

Abstract: The study of electrical activity in single cells and local circuits of excitable cells, such as neurons, requires an easy-to-use, high-throughput methodology that allows for the measurement of membrane potential. Investigating the electrical properties in specific subcompartments of neurons, or in a specific type of neurons, introduces additional complexity. An optical voltage-imaging technique that allows high spatial and temporal resolution could be an ideal solution. However, most valid voltage-imaging techniques are nonspecific. Those that are more site-directed require a lot of preliminary work and specific adaptations, among other drawbacks. Here, we explore a new method for membrane voltage imaging, based on Förster resonance energy transfer between fluorescent polystyrene (FPS) beads and dipicrylamine. Not only has it been shown that fluorescence intensity correlates with membrane potential, but more importantly, the membrane potential from individual particles can be detected. Among other advantages, FPS beads can be synthesized with surface functional groups and can be targeted to specific proteins by conjugation of recognition molecules. Therefore, in the presence of dipicrylamine, FPS beads represent single-particle detectors of membrane potential that can be localized to specific membrane compartments. This new and easily accessible platform for targeted optical voltage imaging can further elucidate the mechanisms of neuronal electrical activity.

17. ARCSnake: Reconfigurable Snake-Like Robot with Archimedean Screw Propulsion for Multi-Domain Mobility

Abstract: Exploring and navigating in extreme environments, such as caves, oceans, and planetary bodies, are often too hazardous for humans, and as such, robots are possible surrogates. These robots are met with significant locomotion challenges that require traversing a wide range of surface roughnesses and topologies. Previous locomotion strategies, involving wheels or ambulatory motion, such as snake platforms, have success on specific surfaces but fail in others which could be detrimental in exploration and navigation missions. In this paper, we present a novel approach that combines snake-like robots with an Archimedean screw locomotion mechanism to provide multiple, effective mobility strategies in a large range of environments, including those that are difficult to traverse for wheeled and ambulatory robots. This work develops a robotic system called ARCSnake to demonstrate this locomotion principle and tested it in a variety of different terrains and environments in order to prove its controllable, multi-domain, navigation capabilities. Abstract: While an increasing number of studies indicate that the range, diversity and abundance of many wild pollinators has declined, the global area of pollinator-dependent crops has significantly increased over the last few decades. Crop pollination studies to date have mainly focused on either identifying different guilds pollinating various crops, or on factors driving spatial changes and turnover observed in these communities. The mechanisms driving temporal stability for ecosystem functioning and services, however, remain poorly understood. Our study quantifies temporal variability observed in crop pollinators in 21 different crops across multiple years at a global scale. Using data from 43 studies from six continents, we show that (i) higher pollinator diversity confers greater inter-annual stability in pollinator communities, (ii) temporal variation observed in pollinator abundance is primarily driven by the three-most dominant species, and (iii) crops in tropical regions demonstrate higher inter-annual variability in pollinator species richness than crops in temperate regions. We highlight the importance of recognizing wild pollinator diversity in agricultural landscapes to stabilize pollinator persistence across years to protect both biodiversity and crop pollination services. Short-term agricultural management practices aimed at dominant species for stabilizing pollination services need to be considered alongside longer term conservation goals focussed on maintaining and facilitating biodiversity to confer ecological stability.

Abstract: The dissertation offers new insights into the daily life, political status, and worldviews of the Palestinian Arabs in Israel between 1948 and 1967. During this period, the state endowed this community with nominal citizenship while at the same time subjecting it to martial law and a wide array of discriminatory policies. At the center of my work is a careful reconstruction of the interactions between the Palestinian Arab citizens and Israeli state organs in four realms: movement restrictions, labor union activities, health care, and political expression. The dissertation focuses on the Israeli-Palestinian encounter at the military checkpoint, in the examination room of the government-run clinic, in the everyday tasks of the Palestinian Histadrut member, and in the worldview of the pro-Nasser cafï¿½ patron. Along with newly declassified and previously inaccessible Israeli archival material, the dissertation also makes use of oral history interviews, private memoirs, and the printed press. In particular, this study disrupts the current scholarly and public discussions on the Palestinian Arab minority in Israel, which pit one claim against another: either the State of Israel has consistently oppressed and persecuted the Palestinians under its control, or it has overall functioned as a model democracy. In contrast, this research concludes that until 1967, Israeli officials of different ranks largely targeted Palestinians for absorption into the Israeli body politic through a protracted project of “subordinate integration.” The Palestinians for their part recognized the state by engaging in civic struggles premised on their citizenship and in the hopes of being treated as equals. The net effect was that the Palestinian Arab citizens became “Arab-Israelis.” Analytically, the dissertation situates the Israeli-Palestinian case in the context of colonial and settler-colonial histories. Abstract: Introduction: Veno-venous arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is a hybrid-modality of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation combining veno-venous and veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. It may be applied to patients with both respiratory and cardio-circulatory failure. Aim: To describe a computational spreadsheet regarding an ex vivo experimental model of veno-venous arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation to determine the return of cannula pairs in a single pump–driven circuit. Methods: We developed an ex vivo model of veno-venous arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation with a single pump and two outflow cannulas, and a glucose solution was used to mimic the features of blood. We maintained a fixed aortic impedance and physiological pulmonary resistance. Both flow and pressure data were collected while testing different pairs of outflow cannulas. Six simulations of different cannula pairs were performed, and data were analysed by a custom-made spreadsheet, which was able to predict the flow partition at different flow levels. Results: In all simulations, the flow in the arterial cannula gradually increased differently depending on the cannula pair. The best cannula pair was a 19-Fr/18-cm arterial with a 17-Fr/50-cm venous cannula, where we observed an equal flow split and acceptable flow into the arterial cannula at a lower flow rate of 4 L/min. Conclusion: Our computational spreadsheet identifies the suitable cannula pairing set for correctly splitting the outlet blood flow into the arterial and venous return cannulas in a veno-venous arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation configuration without the use of external throttles. Several limitations were reported regarding fixed aortic impedance, central venous pressure and the types of cannulas tested; therefore, further studies are mandatory to confirm our findings., QC 20200505

Abstract: Contexte :La criminalité est un fléau mondial. Son coût est élevé quel que soit le pays. Lacriminalité violente représente l’essentiel de ce coût et il est principalement humain. En Afriqueet particulièrement en RDC, elle peut constituer un frein au développement. Notre pays ne peutfaire face à ce problème par des politiques uniquement répressives. La connaissance desfacteurs associés à ce phénomène permettra de le prévenir et d’en réduire les effets néfastes.Objectif :Notre étude se fixe comme objectif de contribuer à la réduction de l’insécuritécaractéristique des zones urbaines de la RDC.Participants et méthode :Cette étude a été menée à la prison centrale de Makala dans lacapitale de la RDC. Un échantillon de convenance de 297 criminels civils de sexe masculinavait été recruté dont 189 auteurs de crimes violents (crime contre la personne) et 108 auteursdes crimes non violents (crime contre la propriété). 203 sujets non criminels appariés sur basedu sexe, de l’âge et de la provenance géographique ont été utilisés comme groupe contrôle.Cette étude cas-témoins a permis grâce à des analyses de régression logistique de déterminerd’une part les facteurs associés à la criminalité violente dans quatre domaines (individuels,familiaux, scolaire et d’affiliation aux pairs) et d’autre part de démontrer l’effet cumulatif deces facteurs.Résultats :La criminalité générale est déterminée par les facteurs individuels suivants le faitd'être polytoxicomane (ORa 16,7 ;IC 95% :8,675-32,251), un niveau élevé de recherche desensation (ORa 12,3 ;IC 95% :3,387-44,593), un niveau élevé de manque de persévérance(ORa 6,5; IC 95% :2,882-14,909), la consommation régulière de drogues (ORa 2,4; IC 95% :1,233-4,880) et un niveau élevé d’ouverture (ORa 2,1; IC 95% :1,150-3,737) ;par les facteursfamiliaux comme l'état civil du sujet (ORa 10,1; IC 95% :2,870-35,689), la présence d’unemploi informel du père (ORa 4,5; IC 95% :2,804-7,359), le fait de provenir d’une famillemonoparentale (ORa 4,1; IC, Context: Crime is a global problem. Holographic imaging techniques have been shown to perform diagnostic screening at low cost in order to meet this clinical need, however the computational and logistical challenges involved in deploying such systems are manifold. This thesis aims to make two specific contributions to the field of point-of-care diagnostics. First, it documents the design and construction of low-cost holographic imaging hardware which can serve as a template for future research and development. Second, it presents a novel deep-learning architecture that can potentially lower the computational burden of digital holography by replacing existing image reconstruction methods. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm by reconstructing biological samples and quantifying their structural similarity relative to spatial deconvolution methods. 38. THE EFFECTS OF AGING ON MULTIPLE POSTURAL MUSCLE CONTROL AND POSTURAL SWAY BEHAVIOR

Abstract: Episodes of instability and falls in the elderly represent a major public health concern. The lack of scientific information about the effects of age-related changes on neurophysiological mechanisms of postural control has limited the advance in the field of fall prevention and rehabilitation of balance disorders. The overall goal of this dissertation was to investigate the effects of aging on postural control. Considering the progressive non-homogeneous deterioration of aging physiological systems, a series of five experimental studies, with healthy young and healthy nonfaller older adults performing upright stance tasks, explored three main hypotheses: (1) intermuscular coherence analysis is able to detect signs of intermuscular synchronization at lower frequency bands as one of the strategies used by the Central Nervous System to control upright stance; (2) aging is associated with a reorganization of correlated neural inputs controlling postural muscles; and (3) aging is associated with changes in body sway behavior. The first three studies corroborated the use of intermuscular coherence analysis to investigate the formation of correlated neural inputs forming postural muscle synergies during upright stance. The fourth study revealed an age-related reorganization of the distribution and strength of correlated neural inputs to multiple postural muscles. Healthy nonfaller older adults presented stronger levels of synchronization, within 0–10 Hz, for three distinct muscle groups: anterior, posterior, and antagonist muscle groups. The fifth study investigated age-related changes on postural sway using traditional and novel postural indices extracted from the center of pressure coordinates. Abstract: Este artigo tem por objetivo apresentar discussões metodológicas acerca da pesquisa em História da Psicologia. Utiliza como eixo norteador da compreensão de história as perspectivas teóricas e metodológicas da Nova História. Esta, em sua crítica à história tradicional, propõe a análise das condições de construção dos fatos. Uma de suas consequências foi a ampliação do campo do documento histórico, com a utilização de outras fontes que não os textos oficiais. Na História da Psicologia, essa ampliação significou a preocupação com o caráter científico das pesquisas históricas e a reflexão sobre os modos de pensar e fazer Psicologia, considerando o contexto e as vozes daqueles que ajudaram a construi-la enquanto conhecimento e prática profissional. No caso do Brasil, diferentes iniciativas e laboratórios têm reafirmado a importância do debate sobre a organização sistemática e análise cuidadosa do material de pesquisa. Aqui são referidos brevemente alguns exemplos de investigação para demonstração deste tipo de proposta.

40. Qualidade de vida de adolescentes: revisão da literatura e perspectivas atuais

Abstract: A qualidade de vida (QV) relacionada à saúde do adolescente vem sendo estudada e, aos poucos, ganhando espaço na literatura científica. A presente investigação objetivou realizar uma revisão sistemática da literatura, buscando identificar como a qualidade de vida tem sido estudada entre os adolescentes e avaliar as relações existentes entre estes dois constructos. Todos os artigos publicados entre os anos de 2006 e 2011, nas bases de dados MedLine/Pubmed e Google Científico, com os descritores adolescentes e qualidade de vida, foram incluídos. Foram organizados, de acordo com o ano de publicação, título, autor, tipo de pesquisa, descrição da intervenção, local da coleta e os resultados evidenciados. A amostra totalizou 141 artigos, sendo que 78 (61,42%) objetivou validar os índices de QV em adolescentes, enquanto 49 (38,58%) objetivou estudar a QV em determinados grupos de adolescentes. Os principais achados revelaram que a QV apresenta melhores índices em adolescentes mais jovens, do gênero masculino, com melhores condições sociais e boas relações sociais. Por fim, de modo geral, a produção da literatura relacionada à QV de adolescentes, ainda é muito incipiente, o que se reflete na pouca discussão do tema entre os profissionais de saúde.

41. Design and Synthesis of Diaminotriazines as Anti-Tuberculosis DHFR Inhibitors

Abstract: A series of novel 2,4 diamino-s-triazine was designed as potential Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) Dihydro folate reductase inhibitors. The synthesized compounds were evaluated in whole cells by employing Resazurin Microtitre Plate Assay (REMA) against Mtb H37Rv, using known DHFR inhibitors Methotrexate and Trimethoprim as standard drugs. The most active compound in the whole cell assay was selected for DHFR enzyme assay against the pathogen and human enzymes. The enzyme assay results revealed that this compound is a selective pathogenic DHFR inhibitor, with 13 fold more selectivity than Methotrexate. Thus, these derivatives have provided promising selective Hits/Leads as MTb DHFR inhibitors and can provide valuable information for further design of potent anti-TB drugs.

Abstract: Standing upright requires the coordination of neural drives to a large set of muscles involved in controlling human bipedal stance (i.e., postural muscles). The coordination may deteriorate in situations where standing is performed under more challenging circumstances, such as standing on a smaller base of support or not having adequate visual information. The present study investigates the role of common neural inputs in the organization of multi-muscle synergies and the effects of visual input disruption to this mechanism of control. We analyzed the strength and distribution of correlated neural inputs (measured by intermuscular coherence) to six postural muscles previously recognized as components of synergistic groups involved in the maintenance of the body’s vertical positioning. Two experimental conditions were studied: quiet bipedal stance performed with opened eyes (OEs) and closed eyes (CEs). Nine participants stood quietly for 30 s while the activity of the soleus, biceps femoris, lumbar erector spinae, tibialis anterior, rectus femoris, and rectus abdominis muscles were recorded using surface electrodes. Intermuscular (EMG–EMG) coherence was estimated for 12 muscle pairs formed by these muscles, including pairs formed solely by either posterior, anterior, or mixed (one posterior and one anterior) muscles. Intermuscular coherence was only found to be significant for muscle pairs formed solely by either posterior or anterior muscles, and no significant coherence was found for mixed muscle pairs. Significant intermuscular coherence was only found within a distinct frequency interval bounded between 1 and 10 Hz when visual input was available (OEs trials). The strength of correlated neural inputs was similar across muscle pairs located in different joints but executing a similar function (pushing body either backward or forward) suggesting that synergistic postural groups are likely formed based on their functional role instead of their anatomical location. Abstract: Posture and postural reactions to mechanical perturbations require the harmonic modulation of the activity of multiple muscles. This precision can become suboptimal in the presence of neuromuscular disorders and result in higher fall risk and associated levels of comorbidity. This study was designed to investigate neurophysiological principles related to the generation and distribution of inputs to skeletal muscles previously recognized as a synergistic group. Specifically, we investigated the current hypothesis that correlated neural inputs, as measured by intermuscular coherence, are the mechanism used by the central nervous system to coordinate the formation of postural muscle synergies. This hypothesis was investigated by analyzing the strength and distribution of correlated neural inputs to postural muscles during the execution of a quiet stance task. Nine participants, 4 females and 5 males, mean age 29.2 years old (±6.1 SD), performed the task of standing while holding a 5-kg barbell in front of their bodies at chest level. Subjects were asked to maintain a standing position for 10 s while the activity of three postural muscles was recorded by surface electrodes: soleus (SOL), biceps femoris (BF), and lumbar erector spinae (ERE). EMG-EMG coherence was estimated for three muscle pairs (SOL/BF, SOL/ERE, and BF/ERE). Our choice of studying these muscles was made based on the fact that they have been reported as components of a functional (synergistic) muscle group that emerges during the execution of bipedal stance. In addition, an isometric contraction can be easily induced in this muscle group by simply adding a weight to the body's anterior aspect. The experimental condition elicited a significant increase in muscle activation levels for all three muscles (p < 0.01 for all muscles). Abstract: For the first time, the dispersed organic matter in the tonstein layer interbedded with a coal seam in the Faxinal Coalfield (Sakmarian, Southern Paraná Basin, Brazil) is characterized. The deposition of clusters of pollen grains was highly influenced by the intense ash fall process that probably occurred during seasonal dehiscence of reproductive structures. The well-preserved phytoclasts with their upper and lower leaf cuticles stuck together indicate that the rapid fall of ash on this material hindered organic biodegradation. The preservation of seemingly autochthonous Botryococcus colonies at the top of the tonstein layer is evidence of the subaqueous deposition of this layer. The darkening in cuticles and xylem phytoclasts can be attributed to different causes: the thermal influence of ash fall during deposition, chemical effects of the ash, prolonged oxidation of organic matter in low water level conditions or the burning of plant organs by wildfires. Analyses of dispersed organic matter along the tonstein layer showed that the organic matter succession reflects the composition of different plant strata (herbaceous pteridophytes and arboreal glossopterids-cordaitaleans) around the deposition site.

48. Bidirectional Transfer: Consequences of Translation Ambiguity for Bilingual Word Meaning

Abstract: Could a second language (L2) influence how bilinguals process their native language (L1)? The work described in this dissertation examined this issue focusing on the way bilinguals interpret the meanings of words. Capitalizing on the prevalence of words that can be translated in more than one way across languages (i.e., translation ambiguity, e.g., ‘watch' and ‘clock' are both translated into Spanish as ‘reloj'), the current work examined if and how bilinguals are affected by the indirect mapping between translations. Performance of two groups of bilinguals who differed in the order in which they learned English and Spanish (English-Spanish and Spanish-English bilinguals) was compared to that of monolingual English controls. In Experiment 1 participants' eye movements were recorded as they read English sentences, in which target words were replaced with English words that either share a translation with the target in Spanish (e.g., ‘clock' to replace ‘watch', both corresponding to ‘reloj' in Spanish) or a control. Participants' sensitivity to the degree of anomaly created by these replacements was compared. The results indicate bidirectional patterns of transfer (L1 influence on L2 and the reverse), in that both bilingual groups processed shared-translation replacements differentially than controls. Experiment 2 further asked if translation ambiguity impacts intra-word senses. Participants were presented with pairs of phrases instantiating different senses of ambiguous English words (e.g., dinner date - expiration date) and were asked to decide if the two senses were related in meaning. Critically, for some pairs of phrases a single Spanish word encompassed both meanings of the ambiguous word (‘joint-translation') and for others each sense corresponded to a different Spanish translation (‘split-translation'). The proportion of ‘yes' responses and latency data again suggest differences between bilinguals and monolinguals as a function of translation status in Spanish

49. Minimalistic Dynamic Climbing

Abstract: Dynamics in locomotion is highly useful, as can be seen in animals. Although dynamic maneuvers are beneficial, only a few engineered systems use them as the design and control are often extremely complicated. This thesis explores a family of dynamic climbing robots which extend robotic dynamic legged locomotion from horizontal motions such as walking and running, to vertical motions such as leaping. Motion of these dynamic robots resembles the motion of an athlete jumping and climbing inside a chute. The mechanisms described achieve dynamic, vertical motions while retaining simplicity in design and control. The first mechanism called DSAC, for Dynamic Single Actuated Climber, comprises only two links connected by a single oscillating actuator. This simple, open-loop oscillation, propels the robot stably between two vertical walls. By rotating the axis of revolution of the single actuator by 90 degrees, we also developed a simpler robot that can be easily miniaturized and can be used to climb inside tubes. The DTAR, for Dynamic Tube Ascending Robot, uses a single continuously rotating motor, unlike the oscillating DSAC motor. This continuous rotation even further simplifies and enables the miniaturization. The last mechanism explored is the ParkourBot which sacrifices some simplicity shown in the first two mechanism in favor of efficiency and more versatile climbing. This mechanism comprises two efficient springy legs connected to a body. We use this family of dynamic climbers to explore a minimalist approach to locomotion. We first analyze open-loop stability characteristics. We show an open-loop, sensorless control, such as fixed oscillation of the DSAC's leg can converge to a stable orbit. We show change in the mechanism's parameters not only changes the stability, but also changes the climbing pattern from a symmetric climb to a limping, non-symmetric climb. We show open-loop behavior can be used to traverse more complex terrains by incrementally adding feedback.
