Abstract

In routine clinical practice, hepatitis C virus-infected patients can prematurely discontinue the prescribed regimen for several reasons. The aim of our study was to investigate sustained virological response (SVR12) rates in patients who prematurely discontinued directly acting antiviral (DAA) regimens and to assess the shortest effective duration of DAA able to lead to SVR12. We retrospectively collected the SVR rates of patients, registered in the NAVIGATORE-Lombardia Network database from January 2015, who discontinued DAAs before the predefined end of treatment. Overall, we included 365 patients, males were the majority (213, 58.4%), mean age was 60.5 years, and 53 (14.5%) patients were HIV-co-infected. Liver cirrhosis was observed in 251 (68.8%) subjects, and the most represented genotypes were 1b (n = 168, 46%) and 3 (n = 59, 16.2%). DAA was discontinued a median of 1 (IQR 1–4) weeks before the predefined EOT, with 164 (44.9%) patients stopping DAAs at least 2 weeks before the planned schedule. In patients with F0–F3 liver fibrosis, lower rates of SVR12 were observed in patients treated for <4 weeks: 50% (n = 2/4) vs. 99.1% (n = 109/110) for ≥4 weeks, p = 0.003. In patients with liver cirrhosis, lower rates of SVR12 were observed in patients treated <8 weeks: 83.3% (n = 25/30) vs. 94.6% (n = 209/221) for ≥8 weeks, p = 0.038. Despite premature discontinuation of DAA, high SVR12 rates were observed in a real-life setting for treatment lasting at least 4 weeks in patients with liver fibrosis F0–F3 and 8 weeks in those with liver cirrhosis. On this basis, feasibility of reducing DAA treatment duration should be explored in randomized clinical trials.

Abstract

The Complete Calibration of the Color–Redshift Relation survey (C3R2) is a spectroscopic program designed to empirically calibrate the galaxy color–redshift relation to the Euclid depth (IE = 24.5), a key ingredient for the success of Stage IV dark energy projects based on weak lensing cosmology. A spectroscopic calibration sample that is as representative as possible of the galaxies in the Euclid weak lensing sample is being collected, selecting galaxies from a self-organizing map (SOM) representation of the galaxy color space. Here, we present the results of a near-infrared H- and K-band spectroscopic campaign carried out using the LUCI instruments at the LBT. For a total of 251 galaxies, we present new highly reliable redshifts in the 1.3 ≤ z ≤ 1.7 and 2 ≤ z ≤ 2.7 ranges. The newly-determined redshifts populate 49 SOM cells that previously contained no spectroscopic measurements and almost twice the occupation numbers of an additional 153 SOM cells. A final optical ground-based observational effort is needed to calibrate the missing cells, in particular in the redshift range 1.7 ≤ z ≤ 2.7, which lack spectroscopic calibration. In the end, Euclid itself will deliver telluric-free near-IR spectra that can complete the calibration.

3. Accuracy and precision of triaxial orbit models I: SMBH mass, stellar mass and dark-matter halo

Abstract

We investigate the accuracy and precision of triaxial dynamical orbit models by fitting two dimensional mock observations of a realistic N-body merger simulation resembling a massive early-type galaxy with a supermassive black hole (SMBH). We show that we can reproduce the triaxial N-body merger remnant's correct black hole mass, stellar mass-to-light ratio and total enclosed mass (inside the half-light radius) for several different tested orientations with an unprecedented accuracy of 5-10%. Our dynamical models use the entire non-parametric line-of-sight velocity distribution (LOSVD) rather than parametric LOSVDs or velocity moments as constraints. Our results strongly suggest that state-of-the-art integral-field projected kinematic data contain only minor degeneracies with respect to the mass and anisotropy recovery. Moroever, this also demonstrates the strength of the Schwarzschild method in general. We achieve the proven high recovery accuracy and precision with our newly developed modeling machinery by combining several advancements: (i) our new semi-parametric deprojection code probes degeneracies and allows to constrain the viewing angles of a triaxial galaxy; (ii) our new orbit modeling code SMART uses a 5-dim orbital starting space to representatively sample in particular near-Keplerian orbits in galaxy centers; (iii) we use a generalised information criterion AICp to optimise the smoothing and to compare different mass models to avoid biases that occur in $\chi^2$-based models with varying model flexibilities.

Abstract

The Complete Calibration of the Color-Redshift Relation survey (C3R2) is a spectroscopic programme designed to empirically calibrate the galaxy color-redshift relation to the Euclid depth (I_E=24.5), a key ingredient for the success of Stage IV dark energy projects based on weak lensing cosmology. A spectroscopic calibration sample as representative as possible of the galaxies in the Euclid weak lensing sample is being collected, selecting galaxies from a self-organizing map (SOM) representation of the galaxy color space. Here, we present the results of a near-infrared H- and K-bands spectroscopic campaign carried out using the LUCI instruments at the LBT. For a total of 251 galaxies, we present new highly-reliable redshifts in the 1.3<= z <=1.7 and 2<= z<=2.7 ranges. The newly-determined redshifts populate 49 SOM cells which previously contained no spectroscopic measurements and almost double the occupation numbers of an additional 153 SOM cells. A final optical ground-based observational effort is needed to calibrate the missing cells in particular in the redshift range 1.7<= z<=2.7 that lack spectroscopic calibration. Although discrimination of the model for end stage liver disease (MELD) is generally considered acceptable, its calibration is still unclear. In a validation study, we assessed the discrimination and calibration performance of 3 versions of the model: original MELD-TIPS, used to predict survival after transjugular intra-hepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS); classic MELD-Mayo; MELD-UNOS, used by United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). Recalibration and model updating were also explored.

Abstract

Different strategies of DAAs treatment are currently possible both pre- and postliver transplantation (LT). Clinical and economic consequences of these strategies still need to be adequately investigated; this study aims at assessing their cost-effectiveness. A decision analytical model was created to simulate the progression of HCV-infected patients listed for decompensated cirrhosis (DCC) or for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Three DAAs treatment strategies were compared: (i) a 12-week course of DAAs prior to transplantation (PRE-LT), (ii) a 4-week course of DAAs starting at the time of transplantation (PERI-LT) and (iii) a 12-week course of DAAs administered at disease recurrence (POST-LT). The population was substratified according to HCC presence and, in those without HCC, according to the MELD score at listing. Data on DAAs effectiveness were estimated using a cohort of patients still followed by 11 transplant centres of the European Liver and Intestine Transplant Association and by data available in the literature. In this study, PRE-LT treatment strategy was dominant for DCC patients with MELD<16 and cost-effective for those with MELD16-20, while POST-LT strategy emerged as cost-effective for DCC patients with MELD>20 and for those with HCC. Sensitivity analyses confirmed PRE-LT as the cost-effective strategy for patients with MELD≤20. In conclusion, PRE-LT treatment is cost-effective for patients with MELD≤20 without HCC, while treatments after LT are cost-effective in cirrhotic patients with MELD>20 and in those with HCC. It is worth reminding, though, that the final choice of a specific regimen at the patient level will have to be personalized based on clinical, social and transplant-related factors

The mechanical properties of GNP/LDPE nanocomposites (graphite nanoplatelets/low density polyethylene) have been investigated, in order to establish the effect of nanoscale reinforcement within the polymer matrix. Results show that the presence of the filler does not involve a change in the microscopic structure of the polymer. However, on a macroscopic scale, GNPs limit the mobility of the polymer chains, resulting in an increase in stiffness for the final composite. Orientation of GNPs within the LDPE matrix is also an important issue that affects mechanical properties and it has been evaluated by testing nanocomposites made by different manufacturing techniques (compression moulding and blown extrusion). The comparison between the experimental data and the Halpin–Tsai model shows that the orientation of GNPs due to the extrusion process leads to values of tensile modulus higher than that obtained with the randomly oriented disposition resulting from the compression moulding technique.

12. Stability and collapse of localized solutions of the controlled three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation

Abstract

On the basis of recent investigations, a newly developed analytical procedure is used for constructing a wide class of localized solutions of the controlled three-dimensional (3D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) that governs the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in the presence of a spatio-temporally varying external potential. The controlled 3D GPE is decomposed into a two-dimensional (2D) linear Schrodinger equation (called the 'transverse equation') and a one-dimensional (1D) nonlinear Schrodinger equation (called the 'longitudinal equation'), constrained by a variational condition for the controlling potential. The latter corresponds to the requirement for the minimization of the control operation in the transverse plane. Then, the above class of localized solutions are constructed as the product of the solutions of the transverse and longitudinal equations. A consistency condition between the transverse and longitudinal solutions yields a relationship between the transverse and longitudinal restoring forces produced by the external trapping potential well through a 'controlling parameter' (i.e. the average, with respect to the transverse profile, of the nonlinear inter-atomic interaction term of the GPE). It is found that the longitudinal profile supports localized solutions in the form of bright, dark or grey solitons with time-dependent amplitudes, widths and centroids. The related longitudinal phase is varying in space and time with time-dependent curvature radius and wavenumber. In turn, all the above parameters (i.e. amplitudes, widths, centroids, curvature radius and wavenumbers) can be easily expressed in terms of the controlling parameter. It is also found that the transverse profile has the form of Hermite-Gauss functions (depending on the transverse coordinates), and the explicit spatio-temporal dependence of the controlling potential is self-consistently determined. Abstract

We report on the simultaneous fabrication of two-dimensional submicron engineered domain patterns on both crystal faces, in congruent lithium niobate. The fabrication technique is based on interference photolithography, which allows short pitch over large areas, followed by electric field poling performed in overpoling regime. Experimental results for different domain pattern geometries, on the two crystal faces, are reported. These structures could be useful for short-wavelength frequency conversion and Bragg gratings applications. We report here on the application of digital holographic microscopy as a metrological tool for the inspection and the micro-topography reconstruction of different microstructures fabricated in bulk lithium niobate by differential etching of reversed ferroelectric domain patterned crystals. These structures have a range of applications in optical ridge waveguides, alignment structures, V-grooves, micro-tips and micro-cantilever beams and precise control of the surface quality and topography is required. The technique allows us to obtain digitally a high-fidelity surface topography description of the specimen with only one image acquisition allowing us to have relatively simple and compact set-ups able to give quantitative information on object morphology. Abstract

We investigate the effect of the defect-induced internal field on the electro-optic behavior of z-cut congruent lithium niobate crystals. We measure, by a spatially resolved interferometric technique, the phase retardation due to an external applied voltage occurring in two regions with opposite ferroelectric polarization. When measurements are performed just after electrical poling, the two opposite domains show a different electro-optic behavior. We interpret this as due to an elastic component of the internal field. Abstract

We report on the evaluation of internal electric field of a ferroelectric engineered-domain in a LiNbO3 wafer crystal by detecting optical path length variation with a noninvasive interferometric inspection method. The lithium niobate wafer has been patterned and subjected to electric field poling to obtain two antiparallel ferroelectric domains separated by a single domain wall. The crystal has been mounted into one arm of a Mach-Zehnder-type interferometer to study the phase map and evaluate the effects of domain reversion by a digital holographic technique. Abstract

We demonstrate fabrication of periodically poled lithium niobate samples by electric field poling, after patterning by interference lithography. Furthermore we investigate the poling process at an overpoling regime which caused the appearance of submicron dot domains very similar to those induced by backswitch but different in nature. We show the possibility for realizing submicron-scaled three-dimensional domain patterns that could be applied to the construction of photonic crystals and in nonlinear optics. We show that high etch-rate applied to such structures allows to obtain pyramidal-like submicron relief structures which in principle could find application for waveguide construction in photonic bandgap devices, QC 20100824

Abstract

An electro-optic device applied as an optical beam deflector and switch at different wavelengths has been built and tested. The electro-optic device is based on domain-engineered lithium niobate (LiNbO3). In this paper, for the first time, its operation has been visualized by an imaging camera. The device has been characterized both at the visible wavelength (632.8 nm) and at a typical telecom wavelength (1532 nm). Furthermore, the device has been tested as an amplitude modulator in the mid-infrared region as well, at a wavelength of similar to4.3 mum, where no Pockels cells are available. Abstract

We report a new interferometric technique for measuring the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices of uniaxial crystals. The technique is based on the measurement of the rotation-dependent phase changes of the optical path length in crystal plates. Accurate measurement of the phase shift as a function of the rotation of the sample is achieved by using a fast-Fourier-transform based fringe analysis method for phase retrieval. The principle of the method is discussed and measurements of the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices of a lithium niobate crystal are reported., QC 20100824

Abstract

n this paper, we have investigated on the potentialities of digital holography for whole reconstruction of wavefields. We show that this technique can be efficiently used for obtaining quantitative information from the intensity and the phase distributions of the reconstructed field at different locations along the propagation direction. The basic concept and procedure of wavefield reconstruction for digital in-line holography is discussed. Numerical reconstructions of the wavefield from digitally recorded in-line hologram patterns and from simulated test patterns are presented. The potential of the method for analysing aberrated wave front has been exploited by applying the reconstruction procedure to astigmatic hologram patterns., QC 20100824

Abstract

In this paper, by using an analogy among {\it quantum mechanics}, {\it electromagnetic beam optics in optical fibers}, and {\it charge particle beam dynamics}, we introduce the concept of {\it coherent states} for charged particle beams in the framework of the {\it Thermal Wave Model} (TWM). We give a physical meaning of the Gaussian-like coherent structures of charged particle distribution that are both naturally and artificially produced in an accelerating machine in terms of the concept of coherent states widely used in quantum mechanics and in quantum optics. According to TWM, this can be done by using a Schr\"{o}dinger-like equation for a complex function, the so-called {\it beam wave function} (BWF), whose squared modulus is proportional to the transverse beam density profile, where Planck's constant and the time are replaced by the transverse beam emittance and by the propagation coordinate, respectively. The evolution of the particle beam, whose initial BWF is assumed to be the simplest coherent state (ground-like state) associated with the beam, in an infinite 1-D quadrupole-like device with small sextupole and octupole aberrations, is analytically and numerically investigated., Comment: 21 pages, Latex
