We consider the 2 Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) and compare two effective field theory (EFT) approaches to it, according to whether the heavy degrees of freedom are integrated out before (SMEFT) or after (HEFT) spontaneous symmetry breaking. %We show that, in the HEFT, an inconsistent EFT is obtained if one considers an expansion simply in inverse powers of the heavy masses. %We consider a HEFT expansion consistent with perturbativity %We show that, if the HEFT approach is required to comply with perturbativity, it ends up obeying the same power counting as the SMEFT one. % By requiring decoupling and perturbativity in the 2HDM, we define a consistent EFT expansion in inverse powers of the heavy masses which is applied to both the SMEFT and the HEFT matchings to the 2HDM. We organize this expansion with a dimensionless parameter $\xi$, and investigate the tree-level scatterings $hh\rightarrow hh$ and $WW\rightarrow hh$ up to $\mathcal{O}(\xi^2)$. We find no differences between the HEFT and the SMEFT approaches at this order. Effective field theory tools are essential for exploring non-Standard Model physics at the LHC in the absence of the discovery of new light particles. Predictions for observables are typically made at the lowest order in the QCD and electroweak expansions in the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) and often ignore the effects of flavor. Here, we present results for electroweak precision observables (EWPOs)at the next-to-leading order QCD and electroweak expansions (NLO) of the SMEFT with an arbitrary flavor structure for the fermion operators. The Checklist of the Vascular Plants of the Republic of Guinea (CVPRG) is a specimen-based, expert-validated knowledge product, which provides a concise synthesis and overview of current knowledge on 3901 vascular plant species documented from Guinea (Conakry), West Africa, including their accepted names and synonyms, as well as their distribution and status within Guinea (indigenous or introduced, endemic or not). The CVPRG is generated automatically from the Guinea Collections Database and the Guinea Names Backbone Database, both developed and maintained at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in collaboration with the staff of the National Herbarium of Guinea. A total of 3505 indigenous vascular plant species are reported of which 3328 are flowering plants (angiosperms); this represents a 26% increase in known indigenous angiosperms since the last floristic overview. Intended as a reference for scientists documenting the diversity and distribution of the Guinea flora, the CVPRG will also inform those seeking to safeguard the rich plant diversity of Guinea and the societal, ecological and economic benefits accruing from these biological resources.

The Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) is the tool of choice for studying deviations of Higgs couplings from the Standard Model predictions. The SMEFT is an expansion in an infinite tower of higher dimension operators, which is typically truncated at dimension-6. We consider the effective theory including dimension-8 operators and examine the matching to the 2 Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) that is assumed to be valid at some high scale. Electroweak precision observables (EWPO) measured at the W and Z poles provide stringent limits on possible beyond the Standard Model physics scenarios. In an effective field theory (EFT) framework, the next-to-leading order QCD and electroweak results for EWPO yield indirect limits on possible 4-fermion operators that do not contribute to the observables at tree level. Here we calculate the next-to-leading corrections to EWPO induced by flavor non-universal 4-fermion interactions and find that the extracted limits on EFT coefficients have a strong dependence on the flavor structure of the 4-fermion operators., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

The truncation of the standard-model effective field theory, its validity and the associated uncertainties have been discussed in meetings of the LHC EFT WG. Deviations from the Standard Model (SM) can be parameterized in terms of the SM effective field theory (SMEFT), which is typically truncated at dimension-6. Including higher dimension operators -- as well as considering simultaneous insertions of multiple dimension-6 operators -- may be necessary in some processes, in order to correctly capture the properties of the underlying UV theory. As a step towards clarifying this in the Higgs boson production in gluon fusion process, we study double insertions of dimension-6 operators in the 1-loop virtual amplitude. The use of the SMEFT Lagrangian to quantify possible Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) effects is standard in LHC and future collider studies. One of the usual assumptions is to truncate the expansion with the dimension-$6$ operators. The numerical impact of the next terms in the series, the dimension-$8$ operators, is unknown in general. We consider a specific BSM model containing a charge-${2 3}$ heavy vector-like quark and compute the operators generated at dimension-$8$. The scalar singlet model extends the Standard Model with the addition of a new gauge singlet scalar. We re-examine the limits on the new scalar from oblique parameter fits and from a global fit to precision electroweak observables and present analytic expressions for our results. For the case when the new scalar is much heavier than the weak scale, we map the model onto the dimension-six Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) and review the allowed parameter space from unitarity considerations and from the requirement that the electroweak minimum be stable. The production of $W^{\pm}H$, $ZH$, $W^+W^-$, and $W^\pm Z$ pairs probes non-Standard-Model interactions of quarks, gauge bosons, and the Higgs boson. New effects can be parameterized in terms of an effective field theory (EFT) where the Lagrangian is expanded in terms of higher-dimension operators suppressed by increasing powers of a high scale $\Lambda$. We examine the importance of including next-to-leading-order QCD corrections in global fits to the coefficients of the EFT. The numerical implications on the fits due to different approaches to enforcing the validity of the EFT are quantified. The Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) provides a consistent framework for comparing precision measurements at the LHC to the Standard Model. The observation of statistically significant non-zero SMEFT coefficients would correspond to physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) of some sort. A more difficult question to answer is what, if any, detailed information about the nature of the underlying high scale model can be obtained from these measurements. In this work, we consider the patterns of SMEFT operators present in five example models and discuss the assumptions inherent in using global fits to make BSM conclusions. We find that including renormalization group effects has a significant impact on the interpretation of the results. In models with extended scalars and CP violation, resonance searches in double Higgs final states stand in competition with related searches in top quark final states as optimal channels for the discovery of beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics. This complementarity is particularly relevant for benchmark scenarios that aim to highlight multi-Higgs production as a standard candle for the study of BSM phenomena. In this note, we compare interference effects in $t\bar t$ final states with correlated phenomena in double Higgs production in the complex singlet and the complex 2-Higgs-Doublet Models. Our results indicate that the BSM discovery potential in di-Higgs searches can be underestimated in comparison to $t\bar t $ resonance searches. Top pair final states are typically suppressed due to destructive signal-background interference, while $hh$ final states can be enhanced due to signal-signal interference. For parameter choices where the two heavy Higgs resonances are well separated in mass, top final states are suppressed relative to the naive signal expectation, while estimates of the production cross section times branching ratio remain accurate at the ${\cal{O}}(10\%)$ level for double Higgs final states., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, v2: version published in PRD

We investigate the role of anomalous gauge boson and fermion couplings on the production of $WZ$ and $W^+W^-$ pairs at the LHC to NLO QCD in the Standard Model effective field theory, including dimension-6 operators. Our results are implemented in a publicly available version of the POWHEG-BOX. We combine our $WZ$ results in the leptonic final state $e\nu \mu^+\mu^-$ with previous $W^+W^-$ results to demonstrate the numerical effects of NLO QCD corrections on the limits on effective couplings derived from ATLAS and CMS 8 and 13 TeV differential measurements. Our study demonstrates the importance of including NLO QCD SMEFT corrections in the $WZ$ analysis, while the effects on $WW$ production are smaller. We also show that the $\mathcal{O}(1/\Lambda^4)$ contributions dominate the analysis, where $\Lambda$ is the high energy scale associated with the SMEFT., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures. We compute the next-to-leading order QCD and electroweak corrections to $Z$ and $W$ pole observables using the dimension-6 Standard Model effective field theory and present numerical results that can easily be included in global fitting programs. Simplified template cross sections define a framework for the measurement and dissemination of kinematic information in Higgs measurements. We benchmark the currently proposed setup in an analysis of dimension-6 effective field theory operators for $WH$ production. Calculating the Fisher information allows us to quantify the sensitivity of this framework to new physics and study its dependence on phase space. New machine-learning techniques let us compare the simplified template cross section framework to the full, high-dimensional kinematic information. Current projections suggest that the LHC will have only limited sensitivity to di-Higgs production in the Standard Model (SM), possibly even after the completion of its high luminosity phase. Multi-Higgs final states play a fundamental role in many extensions of the SM as they are intrinsically sensitive to modifications of the Higgs sector. Therefore, any new observation in multi-Higgs final states could be linked to a range of beyond the SM (BSM) phenomena that are not sufficiently addressed by the SM. Extensions of the Higgs sector typically lead to new phenomenological signatures in multi-Higgs final states that are vastly different from the SM expectation. In this work, we provide a range of signature-driven benchmark points for resonant and non-resonant BSM di-Higgs production that motivate non-SM kinematic correlations and multi-fermion discovery channels. Relying on theoretically well-motivated assumptions, special attention is devoted to the particular case where the presence of new physics will dominantly manifest itself in multi-Higgs final states.

We study the impact of anomalous gauge boson and fermion couplings on the production of $W^+W^-$ pairs at potential future LHC upgrades and estimate the sensitivity at $\sqrt{S}=14$ TeV with $3~ab^{-1}$ and $\sqrt{S}=27$ TeV with $15~ab^{-1}$. A general technique for including NLO QCD effects in effective field theory (EFT) fits to kinematic distributions is presented, and numerical results are given for $\sqrt{S}=13$ TeV $W^+W^-$ production. Our method allows fits to anomalous couplings at NLO accuracy in any EFT basis and has been implemented in a publicly available version of the POWHEG-BOX. Analytic expressions for the $K$-factors relevant for $13$ TeV total cross sections are given for the HISZ and Warsaw EFT bases and differential $K$-factors can be obtained using the supplemental material. We compute the one-loop corrections to $Z$ decay properties from dimension-6 operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) that contribute also to anomalous 3-gauge boson couplings and examine the relative sensitivity of the two processes to the anomalous couplings. The size of the contributions is of order a few percent, of the same size as Standard Model electroweak corrections. Higgs decays to gauge boson pairs are a crucial ingredient in the study of Higgs properties, with the decay $H\rightarrow\gamma\gamma$ being particularly sensitive to new physics effects. Assuming all potential new physics occurs at energies much above the weak scale, deviations from Standard Model predictions can be parameterized in terms of the coefficients of an effective field theory (SMEFT). When experimental limits on the SMEFT coefficients reach an accuracy of a few percent, predictions must be done beyond the lowest order in the SMEFT in order to match theory and experimental accuracy. This paper completes a program of computing the one-loop electroweak SMEFT corrections to $H\rightarrow VV^\prime$, $V=W^\pm,Z,\gamma$. We calculate the complete one-loop electroweak corrections to the inclusive $H\rightarrow ZZ$ and $H\rightarrow Z\gamma$ decays in the dimension-$6$ extension of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). The corrections to $H\rightarrow ZZ$ are computed for on-shell $Z$ bosons and are a precursor to the physical $H\rightarrow Z f {\overline{f}}$ calculation. We present compact numerical formulas for our results and demonstrate that the logarithmic contributions that result from the renormalization group evolution of the SMEFT coefficients are larger than the finite NLO contributions to the decay widths. As a by-product of our calculation, we obtain the first complete result for the finite corrections to $G_\mu$ in the SMEFT., Comment: Published Version. We study the impact of anomalous gauge boson and fermion couplings on the production of $W^+W^-$ pairs at the LHC. Helicity amplitudes are presented separately to demonstrate the sources of new physics contributions and the impact of QCD and electroweak corrections. The QCD corrections have important effects on the fits to anomalous couplings, in particular when one $W$ boson is longitudinally polarized and the other is transversely polarized. One of the simplest extensions of the Standard Model is the inclusion of an additional scalar multiplet, and we consider scalars in the $SU(2)_L$ singlet, triplet, and quartet representations. We examine models with heavy neutral scalars, $m_H\sim 1-2$ TeV, and the matching of the UV complete theories to the low energy effective field theory. We demonstrate the agreement of the kinematic distributions obtained in the singlet models for the gluon fusion of a Higgs pair with the predictions of the effective field theory. Higgs production from gluon fusion is sensitive to the properties of heavy colored fermions and to the Yukawa couplings, (Y_F M_F)/v, of these particles to the Higgs boson. We compute the two--loop, ${\cal O}((Y_F M_F)^3/v^3)$ contributions of new high mass fermions to Higgs production. In the Standard Model, these contributions are part of the well-known electroweak corrections and are negligible. However, in models with TeV scale fermions, such as top partner or composite models, Yukawa corrections are enhanced by effects of ${\cal O}((Y_F M_F)^3/v^3)$ and are potentially significant due to the large mass of the new quarks. The ATLAS and CMS collaborations have recently published new limits on CP conserving anomalous couplings from the $W\gamma$ and $Z\gamma$ production processes. We study the corresponding limits that can be placed on the CP violating anomalous couplings $\kappa_tilde_\gamma$ and $h^1_{\gamma, Z}$ at the LHC. We find that the process $pp --> W\gamma$ at 14 TeV can place the 95% CL limit $|\kappa_tilde_\gamma| <~ 0.05$ with 10 fb^{-1} which is comparable to the existing LHC bound on the CP conserving anomalous couplings $\kappa_\gamma$. Similarly, the process $pp --> Z\gamma$ can place the 95% CL limits $|h^1_\gamma| <~ 20$ and $|h^1_Z| <~ 40$ respectively. In many new physics scenarios, the particle content of the Standard Model is extended and the Higgs couplings are modified, sometimes without affecting single Higgs production. We analyse two models with additional quarks. In these models, we compute double Higgs production from gluon fusion exactly at leading-order, and present analytical results in the heavy-quark mass ap- proximation. The experimental bounds from precision electroweak measurements and from the measured rate of single Higgs production combine to give significant restrictions for the allowed deviation of the double Higgs production rate from the Standard Model prediction as well as on the branching ratio for the Higgs decay into photons. The two models analysed eventually present a similar Higgs phenomenology as the Standard Model. We consider models with multiple Higgs scalar gauge singlets and the resulting restrictions on the parameters from precision electroweak measurements. In these models, the scalar singlets mix with the SU(2) Higgs doublet, potentially leading to reduced couplings of the scalars to fermions and gauge bosons relative to the Standard Model Higgs boson couplings. We compute the leading chiral-logarithmic corrections to the S parameter in the four-site Higgsless model. In addition to the usual electroweak gauge bosons of the Standard Model, this model contains two sets of heavy charged and neutral gauge bosons. In the continuum limit, the latter gauge bosons can be identified with the first excited Kaluza-Klein states of the W^\pm and Z bosons of a warped extra-dimensional model with an SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_X bulk gauge symmetry. We consider delocalized fermions and show that the delocalization parameter must be considerably tuned from its tree-level ideal value in order to reconcile experimental constraints with the one-loop results. Hence, the delocalization of fermions does not solve the problem of large contributions to the S parameter in this class of theories and significant contributions to S can potentially occur at one-loop., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures

Electroweak precision data has been extensively used to constrain models containing physics beyond that of the Standard Model. When the model contains Higgs scalars in representations other than SU(2) singlets or doublets, and hence rho not equal to one at tree level, a correct renormalization scheme requires more inputs than the three needed for the Standard Model. We discuss the connection between the renormalization of models with Higgs triplets and the decoupling properties of the models as the mass scale for the scalar triplet field becomes much larger than the electroweak scale. The requirements of perturbativity of the couplings and agreement with electroweak data place strong restrictions on models with Higgs triplets. We present a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation for the total cross section for inclusive Higgs pair production via bottom-quark fusion at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) and the minimal supergravity model (mSUGRA). We emphasize the contributions of squark and gluino loops (SQCD) and the decoupling properties of our results for heavy squark and gluino masses. We present a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation for the total cross section of inclusive Higgs pair production via bottom-quark fusion ($b\bar{b} \to hh$) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the Standard Model. The NLO QCD corrections lead to less dependence on the renormalization scale ($\mu_R$) and the factorization scale ($\mu_F$) than the leading-order (LO) cross section, and they significantly increase the LO cross section. In this letter, we present our results on a global fit to precision electroweak data in a Higgs triplet model. In models with a triplet Higgs boson, a consistent renormalization scheme differs from that of the Standard Model and the global fit shows that a light Higgs boson with mass of 100-200 GeV is preferred. Triplet Higgs bosons arise in many extensions of the Standard Model, including the left-right model and the Little Higgs models. Our result demonstrates the importance of the scalar loops when there is a large mass splitting between the heavy scalars. Electroweak precision data have been extensively used to constrain models containing physics beyond that of the Standard Model. When the model contains Higgs scalars in representations other than singlets or doublets, and hence rho not equal to 1 at tree level, a correct renormalization scheme requires more inputs than the three commonly used for the Standard Model case. In such cases, the one loop electroweak results cannot be split into a Standard Model contribution plus a piece which vanishes as the scale of new physics becomes much larger than M_W. We illustrate our results by presenting the dependence of M_W on the top quark mass in a model with a Higgs triplet and in the SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R left-right symmetric model. We discuss the physics motivations for building a 500 - 1 TeV electron-positron linear collider. The state of the art collider technologies and the physics-driven machine parameters are discussed. We perform a one-loop analysis of the rho parameter in the Littlest Higgs model, including the logarithmically enhanced contributions from both fermion and scalar loops. The prospects for the discovery of neutral Higgs bosons (phi^0 = H^0, h^0, A^0) produced with bottom quarks via Higgs decays into muon pairs (pp --> b b-bar phi^0 --> b b-bar mu mu-bar +X) at the CERN LHC are investigated in the minimal supersymmetric model. The complete physics background from the production of b b-bar mu mu-bar, b b-bar W^+ W^- (including t t-bar) and jj mu mu-bar, j = g, u, d, s, c in the Standard Model is calculated with realistic acceptance cuts. This discovery mode has a simple production mechanism from gg --> b b-bar phi^0 with its cross section proportional to 1/cos^2(beta) and could provide an opportunity to measure tan(beta) and the b b-bar phi^0 couplings. In addition, we compare the associated discovery mode above with the inclusive discovery channel pp --> phi^0 --> mu mu-bar +X. Promising results are found for the CP-odd pseudoscalar (A^0) and the heavier CP-even scalar (H^0) Higgs bosons for tan(beta) equivalent to v_2/v_1 >~ 14 and m_A,m_H <~ 325 GeV., Comment: 12 pages, REVTeX, 4 Figures

The cross section for the reaction $e^+e^- \to t\bar{t} H$ depends sensitively on the top quark Yukwawa coupling $\lambda_t$. We calculate the rate for $t\bar{t}H$ production, followed by the decay $H\to b\bar{b}$, for a Standard Model Higgs boson with 100 < m_H <130 GeV. We interface with ISAJET to generate QCD radiation, hadronization and particle decays. We also calculate the dominant $t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ backgrounds from electroweak and QCD processes. We consider both semileptonic and fully hadronic decays of the $t\bar{t}$ system. In our analysis, we attempt full reconstruction of the top quark and W boson masses in the generated events. The invariant mass of the remaining b-jets should show evidence of Higgs boson production. We estimate the accuracy with which $\lambda_t$ can be measured at a linear e^+e^- collider. Our results, including statistical but not systematic errors, show that the top quark Yukawa coupling can be measured to 6-8 % accuracy with 1000 fb^{-1} at $E_{CM}=1 TeV$, assuming 100 % efficiency for b-jet tagging. The accuracy of the measurement drops to 17-22 % if only a 60 % efficiency for b-tagging is achieved., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures

We compute the O(alpha_s) QCD corrections to the inclusive process e^+e^- --> t \bar t h. Although the total rate is small, it has a distinctive experimental signature and can potentially be used to measure the top quark-Higgs boson Yukawa coupling. The QCD corrections increase the rate by a factor of roughly 1.5 for e^+e^- --> t \bar t h at sqrt(s)=500 GeV and Mh=100 GeV.
