Abstract: This dissertation consists of three chapters centered on the topic of sustainable finance. Sustainable finance is broadly defined as the process of taking into account environmental, social, and governance considerations when making investment decisions. This work explores the interplay between environmental regulations and firm pollution, and their impact on mutual funds' portfolio choices, corporate philanthropy, and shareholder wealth. The first chapter, "Environmental regulatory risks, firm pollution, and mutual funds' portfolio choices", examines how mutual funds' portfolio holdings respond to environmental regulations. Using county-level ozone nonattainment designations induced by discrete policy changes in the National Ambient Air Quality Standards as a source of exogenous variation in local regulatory stringency, we find that funds underweight (overweight) those polluting stocks whose cash flows covary negatively (positively) with the regulatory shock. Our results are consistent with active portfolio rebalancing in response to expected changes in firm fundamentals due to negative cash flow shocks stemming from the costs of nonattainment regulation. Further analyses in the post-nonattainment period show that stocks with high exposure to nonattainment designations exhibit worse operating performance and increased regulatory compliance costs. The most underweighted of such firms also exhibit worse abnormal stock return performance. Funds that reduce their portfolio exposure to nonattainment designations see an improvement in their investment performance.In the second chapter, "Every emission you create--every dollar you'll donate: The effect of regulation-induced pollution on corporate philanthropy" (with Seungho Choi and Raphael Jonghyeon Park), we investigate the insurance-motives of polluting firms' charitable giving by analyzing donations from philanthropic foundations to nonprofit organizations in the local community. To date, about 400 genes have been linked to CHD, including cell signaling molecules, transcription factors, and structural proteins that are important for heart development. Genetic analysis of CHD cases is crucial for clinical management and etiological analysis.Methods: Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was performed to identify the genetic variants in two independent CHD cases with DNA samples from fetuses and their parents, followed by the exclusion of aneuploidy and large copy number variations (CNVs). The WES results were verified by Sanger sequencing.Results: In family A, a compound heterozygous variation in PLD1 gene consisting of c.1132dupA (p.I378fs) and c.1171C>T (p.R391C) was identified in the fetus. The two variants were inherited from the father (c.1132dupA) and the mother (c.1171C>T), respectively. In family B, a hemizygous variant ZIC3: c.861delG (p.G289Afs&ast;119) was identified in the fetus, which was inherited from the heterozygous mother. 3. SamToNe: Improving Contrastive Loss for Dual Encoder Retrieval Models with Same Tower Negatives

Abstract: Dual encoders have been used for retrieval tasks and representation learning with good results. A standard way to train dual encoders is using a contrastive loss with in-batch negatives. In this work, we propose an improved contrastive learning objective by adding queries or documents from the same encoder towers to the negatives, for which we name it as "contrastive loss with SAMe TOwer NEgatives" (SamToNe). By evaluating on question answering retrieval benchmarks from MS MARCO and MultiReQA, and heterogenous zero-shot information retrieval benchmarks (BEIR), we demonstrate that SamToNe can effectively improve the retrieval quality for both symmetric and asymmetric dual encoders. By directly probing the embedding spaces of the two encoding towers via the t-SNE algorithm (van der Maaten and Hinton, 2008), we observe that SamToNe ensures the alignment between the embedding spaces from the two encoder towers. Based on the analysis of the embedding distance distributions of the top-$1$ retrieved results, we further explain the efficacy of the method from the perspective of regularisation., Comment: ACL 2023 Findings

Abstract: This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Abstract: The field of building detection from remote sensing images has made significant progress, but faces challenges in achieving high-accuracy detection due to the diversity in building appearances and the complexity of vast scenes. To address these challenges, we propose a novel approach called Context-Enhanced Detector (CEDet). Our approach utilizes a three-stage cascade structure to enhance the extraction of contextual information and improve building detection accuracy. Specifically, we introduce two modules: the Semantic Guided Contextual Mining (SGCM) module, which aggregates multi-scale contexts and incorporates an attention mechanism to capture long-range interactions, and the Instance Context Mining Module (ICMM), which captures instance-level relationship context by constructing a spatial relationship graph and aggregating instance features. Additionally, we introduce a semantic segmentation loss based on pseudo-masks to guide contextual information extraction. Abstract: Miniature microscopes have gained considerable traction for in vivo calcium imaging in freely behaving animals. However, extracting calcium signals from raw videos is a computationally complex problem and remains a bottleneck for many researchers utilizing single-photon in vivo calcium imaging. Despite the existence of many powerful analysis packages designed to detect and extract calcium dynamics, most have either key parameters that are hard-coded or insufficient step-by-step guidance and validations to help the users choose the best parameters. This makes it difficult to know whether the output is reliable and meets the assumptions necessary for proper analysis. Moreover, large memory demand is often a constraint for setting up these pipelines since it limits the choice of hardware to specialized computers. Given these difficulties, there is a need for a low memory demand, user-friendly tool offering interactive visualizations of how altering parameters at each step of the analysis affects data output. Our open-source analysis pipeline, Minian (miniscope analysis), facilitates the transparency and accessibility of single-photon calcium imaging analysis, permitting users with little computational experience to extract the location of cells and their corresponding calcium traces and deconvolved neural activities. Minian contains interactive visualization tools for every step of the analysis, as well as detailed documentation and tips on parameter exploration. Furthermore, Minian has relatively small memory demands and can be run on a laptop, making it available to labs that do not have access to specialized computational hardware. Minian has been validated to reliably and robustly extract calcium events across different brain regions and from different cell types. In practice, Minian provides an open-source calcium imaging analysis pipeline with user-friendly interactive visualizations to explore parameters and validate results.

7. Knowledge Prompts: Injecting World Knowledge into Language Models through Soft Prompts

Abstract: Soft prompts have been recently proposed as a tool for adapting large frozen language models (LMs) to new tasks. In this work, we repurpose soft prompts to the task of injecting world knowledge into LMs. We introduce a method to train soft prompts via self-supervised learning on data from knowledge bases. The resulting soft knowledge prompts (KPs) are task independent and work as an external memory of the LMs. We perform qualitative and quantitative experiments and demonstrate that: (1) KPs can effectively model the structure of the training data; (2) KPs can be used to improve the performance of LMs in different knowledge intensive tasks.

8. SKILL: Structured Knowledge Infusion for Large Language Models

Abstract: Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated human-level performance on a vast spectrum of natural language tasks. However, it is largely unexplored whether they can better internalize knowledge from a structured data, such as a knowledge graph, or from text. In this work, we propose a method to infuse structured knowledge into LLMs, by directly training T5 models on factual triples of knowledge graphs (KGs). We show that models pre-trained on Wikidata KG with our method outperform the T5 baselines on FreebaseQA and WikiHop, as well as the Wikidata-answerable subset of TriviaQA and NaturalQuestions. The models pre-trained on factual triples compare competitively with the ones on natural language sentences that contain the same knowledge. Trained on a smaller size KG, WikiMovies, we saw 3x improvement of exact match score on MetaQA task compared to T5 baseline. The proposed method has an advantage that no alignment between the knowledge graph and text corpus is required in curating training data. 9. Exploring Dual Encoder Architectures for Question Answering

Abstract: Dual encoders have been used for question-answering (QA) and information retrieval (IR) tasks with good results. Previous research focuses on two major types of dual encoders, Siamese Dual Encoder (SDE), with parameters shared across two encoders, and Asymmetric Dual Encoder (ADE), with two distinctly parameterized encoders. In this work, we explore different ways in which the dual encoder can be structured, and evaluate how these differences can affect their efficacy in terms of QA retrieval tasks. By evaluating on MS MARCO, open domain NQ and the MultiReQA benchmarks, we show that SDE performs significantly better than ADE. We further propose three different improved versions of ADEs by sharing or freezing parts of the architectures between two encoder towers. We find that sharing parameters in projection layers would enable ADEs to perform competitively with or outperform SDEs. We further explore and explain why parameter sharing in projection layer significantly improves the efficacy of the dual encoders, by directly probing the embedding spaces of the two encoder towers with t-SNE algorithm., Comment: Published in EMNLP 2022

10. Coupled Gradient Estimators for Discrete Latent Variables

Abstract: Training models with discrete latent variables is challenging due to the high variance of unbiased gradient estimators. While low-variance reparameterization gradients of a continuous relaxation can provide an effective solution, a continuous relaxation is not always available or tractable. Dong et al. (2020) and Yin et al. (2020) introduced a performant estimator that does not rely on continuous relaxations; however, it is limited to binary random variables. We introduce a novel derivation of their estimator based on importance sampling and statistical couplings, which we extend to the categorical setting. Motivated by the construction of a stick-breaking coupling, we introduce gradient estimators based on reparameterizing categorical variables as sequences of binary variables and Rao-Blackwellization. In systematic experiments, we show that our proposed categorical gradient estimators provide state-of-the-art performance, whereas even with additional Rao-Blackwellization, previous estimators (Yin et al., 2019) underperform a simpler REINFORCE with a leave-one-out-baseline estimator (Kool et al., 2019)., Comment: Published in NeurIPS 2021

12. DisARM: An Antithetic Gradient Estimator for Binary Latent Variables

Abstract: Training models with discrete latent variables is challenging due to the difficulty of estimating the gradients accurately. Much of the recent progress has been achieved by taking advantage of continuous relaxations of the system, which are not always available or even possible. The Augment-REINFORCE-Merge (ARM) estimator provides an alternative that, instead of relaxation, uses continuous augmentation. Applying antithetic sampling over the augmenting variables yields a relatively low-variance and unbiased estimator applicable to any model with binary latent variables. However, while antithetic sampling reduces variance, the augmentation process increases variance. We show that ARM can be improved by analytically integrating out the randomness introduced by the augmentation process, guaranteeing substantial variance reduction. Our estimator, DisARM, is simple to implement and has the same computational cost as ARM. We evaluate DisARM on several generative modeling benchmarks and show that it consistently outperforms ARM and a strong independent sample baseline in terms of both variance and log-likelihood. Furthermore, we propose a local version of DisARM designed for optimizing the multi-sample variational bound, and show that it outperforms VIMCO, the current state-of-the-art method.

Abstract: Certain biological neurons demonstrate a remarkable capability to optimally compress the history of sensory inputs while being maximally informative about the future. In this work, we investigate if the same can be said of artificial neurons in recurrent neural networks (RNNs) trained with maximum likelihood. Empirically, we find that RNNs are suboptimal in the information plane. Instead of optimally compressing past information, they extract additional information that is not relevant for predicting the future. We show that constraining past information by injecting noise into the hidden state can improve RNNs in several ways: optimality in the predictive information plane, sample quality, heldout likelihood, and downstream classification performance.

Abstract: We propose an efficient inference method for switching nonlinear dynamical systems. The key idea is to learn an inference network which can be used as a proposal distribution for the continuous latent variables, while performing exact marginalization of the discrete latent variables. This allows us to use the reparameterization trick, and apply end-to-end training with stochastic gradient descent. We show that the proposed method can successfully segment time series data, including videos and 3D human pose, into meaningful ``regimes'' by using the piece-wise nonlinear dynamics.

16. Adaptive DDoS attack detection method based on multiple-kernel learning

Abstract: Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks have caused huge economic losses to society. They have become one of the main threats to Internet security. Most of the current detection methods based on a single feature and fixed model parameters cannot effectively detect early DDoS attacks in cloud and big data environment. In this paper, an adaptive DDoS attack detection method (ADADM) based on multiple kernel learning (MKL) is proposed. Based on the burstiness of DDoS attack flow, the distribution of addresses and the interactivity of communication, we define five features to describe the network flow characteristic. Based on the ensemble learning framework, the weight of each dimension is adaptively adjusted by increasing the inter-class mean with a gradient ascent and reducing the intra-class variance with a gradient descent, and the classifier is established to identify an early DDoS attack by training simple multiple kernel learning (SMKL) models with two characteristics including inter-class mean squared difference growth (M-SMKL) and intra-class variance descent (S-SMKL). The sliding window mechanism is used to coordinate the S-SMKL and M-SMKL to detect the early DDoS attack. The experimental results indicate that this method can detect DDoS attacks early and accurately.

Abstract: Middle to Late Pleistocene human evolution in East Asia has remained controversial regarding the extent of morphological continuity through archaic humans and to modern humans. Newly found ∼300,000-y-old human remains from Hualongdong (HLD), China, including a largely complete skull (HLD 6), share East Asian Middle Pleistocene (MPl) human traits of a low vault with a frontal keel (but no parietal sagittal keel or angular torus), a low and wide nasal aperture, a pronounced supraorbital torus (especially medially), a nonlevel nasal floor, and small or absent third molars. It lacks a malar incisure but has a large superior medial pterygoid tubercle. HLD 6 also exhibits a relatively flat superior face, a more vertical mandibular symphysis, a pronounced mental trigone, and simple occlusal morphology, foreshadowing modern human morphology. The HLD human fossils thus variably resemble other later MPl East Asian remains, but add to the overall variation in the sample. Their configurations, with those of other Middle and early Late Pleistocene East Asian remains, support archaic human regional continuity and provide a background to the subsequent archaic-to-modern human transition in the region.

The educational needs assessment tool (ENAT) was developed in the UK to help direct needs-based patient education in rheumatic diseases. Aim: The aim of the study was to adapt and validate the ENAT into Chinese, for use in severe knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Methods: This cross-cultural validation study took two phases: 1) adaptation of the ENAT into Chinese (CENAT) and 2) validation of the CENAT. The Construct validity was determined using factor analysis and criterion-related validity by comparing data from CENAT with data from different self-efficacy scales: patient–physician interactions scale (PEPPI-10), self-efficacy for rehabilitation outcome scale (SER), and the self-efficacy for exercise scale (SEE). Results: The sample comprised 196 patients, with mean age 63.6±8.7 years, disease duration was 11.5 years, and 57.1% were female. The CENAT was found to have high internal consistency. The CENAT had weak correlations with the Chinese versions of PEPPI r=0.40, SER r=0.40, and SEE r=0.39. There were no correlations with age r=-0.03 or disease duration r=-0.11. 19. Parameter-free Topology Inference and Sparsification for Data on Manifolds

Abstract: In topology inference from data, current approaches face two major problems. One concerns the selection of a correct parameter to build an appropriate complex on top of the data points; the other involves with the typical `large' size of this complex. We address these two issues in the context of inferring homology from sample points of a smooth manifold of known dimension sitting in an Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^k$. We show that, for a sample size of $n$ points, we can identify a set of $O(n^2)$ points (as opposed to $O(n^{\lceil \frac{k}{2}\rceil})$ Voronoi vertices) approximating a subset of the medial axis that suffices to compute a distance sandwiched between the well known local feature size and the local weak feature size (in fact, the approximating set can be further reduced in size to $O(n)$). This distance, called the lean feature size, helps pruning the input set at least to the level of local feature size while making the data locally uniform. The local uniformity in turn helps in building a complex for homology inference on top of the sparsified data without requiring any user-supplied distance threshold. Unlike most topology inference results, ours does not require that the input is dense relative to a {\em global} feature such as {\em reach} or {\em weak feature size}; instead it can be adaptive with respect to the local feature size. We present some empirical evidence in support of our theoretical claims.

Abstract: Subject to strong experimental constraints at low energies, baryon number violation is nonetheless well motivated from a theoretical point of view. We examine the possibility of observing baryon-number-violating top-quark production or decay at hadron colliders. We adopt a model independent effective approach and focus on operators with minimal mass-dimension. Corresponding effective coefficients could be directly probed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) already with an integrated luminosity of 1 inverse femtobarn at 7 TeV, and further constrained with 30 (100) inverse femtobarns at 7 (14) TeV., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, v2 matches the published version, with an extra sign corrected on the first line of eq.(6)

24. Top Quarks as a Window to String Resonances

Abstract: We study the discovery potential of string resonances decaying to $t\bar{t}$ final state at the LHC. We point out that top quark pair production is a promising and an advantageous channel for studying such resonances, due to their low Standard Model background and unique kinematics. We study the invariant mass distribution and angular dependence of the top pair production cross section via exchanges of string resonances. The mass ratios of these resonances and the unusual angular distribution may help identify their fundamental properties and distinguish them from other new physics. We find that string resonances for a string scale below 4 TeV can be detected via the $t\bar{t}$ channel, either from reconstructing the $t\bar{t}$ semi-leptonic decay or recent techniques in identifying highly boosted tops., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures
