The researchers determined that the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the crime rate in Barangay 176 Bagong Silangan, Caloocan City. The threat of robbery-related crimes during COVID-19 in Barangay 176 Bagong Silang Caloocan City was reported due to the barangay lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic surge. This caused people to change how they live, which may have a big impact on the residents, triggering them psychologically, physiologically, and emotionally. There is also a current change in the crime rate, which has turned down and has lower rates since the pandemic restricted people from going outside, giving them less access to means of committing crimes. The researchers used a descriptive method to find information about existing conditions. They distributed survey questionnaires to residents and barangay officials of Barangay 176, Caloocan City. The questionnaires contained closed-ended questions pertinent to the crime concerning the pandemic, and every question had corresponding translations to avoid misconceptions. Most respondents agreed to elevate the number of workers, and most experienced intense security risks in apprehending violators. The study suggested conducting informative programs like seminars, which most agreed to. The study's findings addressed the main problem encountered by the local authorities. They provided for its resolution by having barangay officials' intensive combined efforts, conducting seminars, and livelihood programs to deepen society's awareness about crimes and their consequences so that the fewer motives they get, the less likely they are to commit a crime. Based on what the respondents stated, robbery is the highest form of taking someone's things, and it is also one of the most difficult problems in our society that leads to growing faster. It looked into the frequency of use of gadgets in learning, which are cell phones, computers, and tablets and the effect of gadget usage on selected senior high school students. Further, it determined the significant relationship between the frequency of use and the effect of gadgets. Bestlink College of the Philippines students conducted the study via a Google Forms questionnaire.    This study used the quantitative research design with the questionnaire as the main gathering tool. The data were tabulated into a contingency table and treated with the proper statistical measures. For problems 1 to 5, the Average Weighted Mean method was used; a four-point and five-point Likert scale was used in the analysis. Problem number 3 and the null hypothesis were tested for significance using the. Relative to the analyses and interpretation of data, it was deduced that the students always use cellphones, tablets, and sometimes computers. This study also deducted that the use of gadgets has a moderately positive impact on learning but also a slightly negative impact. It was also deducted that there was no significant correlation between the frequency of use and the impact of gadgets. Female respondents agreed on the mental effects of prioritizing gadget usage. They agreed on the social and emotional implications, indicating that these variables substantially impact their academic achievement, health, and habits. Male respondents overwhelmingly agreed on the mental, social, and emotional effects of gadget use in terms of academic achievement, health, and habits, among other things. Both male and female respondents largely supported the recommended remedies to the problem. &nbsp

Worldwide, people struggle to balance their workloads while implementing new skill sets in less-than-ideal ways. Development services assist educators in incorporating useful tools in education. Google Workspace for Education is a collection of Google tools and services designed to help schools and homeschools collaborate and keep learning secure. Google Workspace for Education provides various options to meet your organization’s needs. The descriptive study describes the current state of the variable: the literacy of Grade 12 HUMSS students in Bestlink Senior High School using Google Workspace as an educational tool. As a result, there are no presumed causes or effects. The study design will be qualitative, employing surveys to collect data using g-forms to verify subjects.    The respondents, according to gender, consist of 26 males, which is 43.3% of the population and 34 females, which is 56.7%, with a total number of 60 respondents. The most frequent age of the respondents is between 18-19 years'' old, which is 70% of the population. The least frequent of the respondents are between the ages 20-21, 10%. Most respondents believe that Google Literacy Workspace can assist them in improving their learning engagement. The most likely recommendation for them to use Google Workspace as an educational tool is to secure their open workspace account by adding passwords and two-factor authentication. Being able to socialize with friends and other people is one of the things we can consider to alleviate our problems.

Although the literature is rich in contributions analyzing the role of social workers in sports, there remains a lack of empirical research with respect to how these workers can be determinant in the development of inclusion outcomes in sports-driven interventions targeting socially vulnerable youth. The investigation analyzes the case of a sports-based program run by an Italian non-profit organization (NGO) from an ecological system perspective. Data from interviews and focus groups with youth involved in the program (21), parents (15), sport coaches (9), and the social workers of the NGO (15) were triangulated with the aim of exploring how social workers promoted inclusion through sport. Data were analyzed in a top-down thematic analysis.Findings: Social workers promoted many social inclusion outcomes: (1) they linked sport clubs with the youth excluded from the sport system, thus sustaining access to sport; (2) they emotionally supported youth and their families in the program, fostering the relational dimension of social inclusion; (3) they formed alliances between the diverse systems of youth life, enhancing youth capacity to overcome their personal challenges in sports; and (4) they encouraged the integration of people coming from different socio-economic backgrounds within the sport context.Applications: The case informs the practice of social workers in sport-driven interventions providing insights around the tasks they should achieve to promote social inclusion, including (1) recruitment of youth excluded from the sport system and linkage with sport clubs, (2) sport bureaucracy support, and (3) dialogue with diverse youth life systems.

High spinal cord injuries (SCIs) lead to permanent functional deficits, including respiratory dysfunction. Patients living with such conditions often rely on ventilatory assistance to survive, and even those that can be weaned continue to suffer life-threatening impairments. There is currently no treatment for SCI that is capable of providing complete recovery of diaphragm activity and respiratory function. The diaphragm is the main inspiratory muscle, and its activity is controlled by phrenic motoneurons (phMNs) located in the cervical (C3–C5) spinal cord. Preserving and/or restoring phMN activity following a high SCI is essential for achieving voluntary control of breathing. In this review, we will highlight (1) the current knowledge of inflammatory and spontaneous pro-regenerative processes occurring after SCI, (2) key therapeutics developed to date, and (3) how these can be harnessed to drive respiratory recovery following SCIs. These therapeutic approaches are typically first developed and tested in relevant preclinical models, with some of them having been translated into clinical studies. A better understanding of inflammatory and pro-regenerative processes, as well as how they can be therapeutically manipulated, will be the key to achieving optimal functional recovery following SCIs.

OBJECTIVES: Rising rates of hospitalization for patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) result in high rates of patient-directed discharge (PDD, also called "discharge against medical advice") and 30-day readmissions. Interdisciplinary addiction consult services are an emerging criterion standard to improve care for these patients, but these services are resource- and expertise-intensive. A set of withdrawal guidelines was developed to guide generalists in caring for patients with opioid withdrawal at a hospital without an addiction consult service. METHODS: Retrospective chart review was performed to determine PDD, 30-day readmission, and psychiatry consult rates for hospitalized patients with OUD during periods before (July 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018) and after (January 1, 2019, to July 31, 2019) the withdrawal guidelines were implemented. Information on the provision of opioid agonist therapy (OAT) was also obtained. RESULTS: Use of OAT in patients with OUD increased significantly after guideline introduction, from 23.3% to 64.8% ( P < 0.001). Patient-directed discharge did not change, remaining at 14% before and after. Thirty-day readmissions increased 12.4% to 15.7% ( P = 0.05065). Receiving any OAT was associated with increased PDD and readmission, but only within the postintervention cohort. CONCLUSIONS: A guideline to facilitate generalist management of opioid withdrawal in hospitalized patients improved the process of care, increasing the use of OAT and decreasing workload on the psychiatry consult services. Although increased inpatient OAT has been previously shown to decrease PDD, in this study PDD and readmission rates did not improve. Guidelines may be insufficient to impact these outcomes.

Visceral pain (VP) is a global problem with complex etiologies and limited therapeutic options. Guanylyl cyclase C (GUCY2C), an intestinal receptor producing cyclic GMP(cGMP), which regulates luminal fluid secretion, has emerged as a therapeutic target for VP. Indeed, FDA-approved GUCY2C agonists ameliorate VP in patients with chronic constipation syndromes, although analgesic mechanisms remain obscure. Here, we revealed that intestinal GUCY2C was selectively enriched in neuropod cells, a type of enteroendocrine cell that synapses with submucosal neurons in mice and humans. GUCY2Chi neuropod cells associated with cocultured dorsal root ganglia neurons and induced hyperexcitability, reducing the rheobase and increasing the resulting number of evoked action potentials. Conversely, the GUCY2C agonist linaclotide eliminated neuronal hyperexcitability produced by GUCY2C-sufficient - but not GUCY2C-deficient - neuropod cells, an effect independent of bulk epithelial cells or extracellular cGMP. Genetic elimination of intestinal GUCY2C amplified nociceptive signaling in VP that was comparable with chemically induced VP but refractory to linaclotide. Importantly, eliminating GUCY2C selectively in neuropod cells also increased nociceptive signaling and VP that was refractory to linaclotide. In the context of loss of GUCY2C hormones in patients with VP, these observations suggest a specific role for neuropod GUCY2C signaling in the pathophysiology and treatment of these pain syndromes.

Currently, sports are well-known as a prominent means to address a wide spectrum of social goals. This acknowledgement of sports’ social impact has been achieved through international acts and advocacy actions involving the United Nations (UN), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), sport federations, national governments and civic society over time (1). A recent significant step in formal recognition can be found in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through Resolution 70/1, which officially designates sports as an institutionalised sector contributing to sustainable development (2). As a consequence of the identification of sports as catalysts for diverse social outcomes on the global and national agenda, the sport for development and peace (SDP) movement has emerged. SDP encompasses a wide range of actions, programs and studies wherein sports are utilised and investigated as means to promote non-sporting and peace building goals (3). SDP studies provide evidence regarding the variety of social benefits that can be achieved through sports, including: (i) health development (4–7); (ii) social inclusion (8–13); (iii) employment (14); (iv) sports integrity (15–17); (v) sports diplomacy (18–20); (vi) and sport, economy and crime (21). Despite the richness of studies in the field, some open questions remain concerning the efficient use of sports as a tool for social and developmental purposes. First, the literature lacks frameworks and models guiding efficient sport-based program planning, structuring and management to maximize social outcomes (22–24). Secondly, the literature emphasizes the need to monitor and evaluate sport-based programs in order to explore “what works about sport” and “why it works” in specific contexts and conditions (22, 24–27). The collection of articles in this Research Topic contributes and enriches the debate on these open issues.

This study sought to assess evaluate the Health and Safety Programs of Government Projects of the DPWH-Aurora.The current study utilized the quantitative research design through various assessment of the projects of the DPWH-Aurora. The assessment was within two-part scenario. The first part is the scope of the Health and Safety Programs which engaged the selected projects into review how the programs were applied by health and Safety. The second part was the entirety of Health and Safety Programs within the impressions of the project engineers. This study was participated by fifty project implementers. The results revealed that the DPWH-Aurora has been outstanding in Health and Safety which included Management and Leadership, Worker Participation, Hazard Identification and Assessment, Hazard Prevention and Control, Education and Training, Program Evaluation and Improvement and Communication and Coordination for Employers. In order to improve working conditions, safety concerns are therefore only taken into account when an accident happens at a construction site, particularly in emerging provinces like Aurora. Safety and health are covered by public works in Aurora and must be appropriately implemented. Because appropriate safety management in construction is so crucial, this study proposes a safety management evaluation framework in order to establish a baseline for measuring construction safety. The most important aspect influencing construction safety is management commitment, which includes developing organizational safety policies, delegating responsibility for safety to all levels, etc. The benchmarking process and actions for raising construction safety performance in developing provinces will be made easier by the suggested management framework.

CubeSats are giving the opportunity for educational institutes to participate in the space industry, develop new technologies and test out new ideas in outer space. CubeSat missions are developed to perform scientific research and demonstrate new space technologies with relatively cheap cost and limited resources. This category of satellites has many limitations such as the short development time, the power consumption and the limited time and capability of data downlink. Earth Observation from a Low Earth Orbit is one of the most appealing m applications of CubeSats developed by students or non-space faring countries. Investigating new technologies to improve image quality and studying ways to increase acquisition adequacy is very promising. This paper aims to introduce a mission hardware design and machine learning-based algorithm used within an Earth Observation (EO) CubeSat. The case study of this paper is Alainsat-1 project which is a 3U CubeSat developed with the support of IEEE Geo-science and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) at the National Space Science and Technology Center, UAE. The satellite is planned to be launched by 2022. A low-resolution Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) camera for EO is developed as a primary mission in this CubeSat. The compatible hardware design and software algorithm proposed is responsible for classifying the images captured by the camera into different categories based on cloud intensity detected in these images before downloading them to the ground station. A microcontroller-based architecture is developed for controlling the mission board; it is responsible for accessing the memory, reading the images, and running the cloud detection algorithm. The cloud detection algorithm is based on a U-net architecture while the algorithm is developed using a Tensor-flow library. Pigments homologous to the green fluorescent protein (GFP) have been proposed to fine-tune the internal light microclimate of corals, facilitating photoacclimation of photosynthetic coral symbionts (Symbiodiniaceae) to life in different reef habitats and environmental conditions. However, direct measurements of the in vivo light conditions inside the coral tissue supporting this conclusion are lacking. Here, we quantified the intra-tissue spectral light environment of corals expressing GFP-like proteins from widely different light regimes. We focus on: (1) photoconvertible red fluorescent proteins (pcRFPs), thought to enhance photosynthesis in mesophotic habitats via wavelength conversion, and (2) chromoproteins (CPs), which provide photoprotection to the symbionts in shallow water via light absorption. Optical microsensor measurements indicated that both pigment groups strongly alter the coral intra-tissue light environment. Estimates derived from light spectra measured in pcRFP-containing corals showed that fluorescence emission can contribute to >50% of orange-red light available to the photosynthetic symbionts at mesophotic depths. We further show that upregulation of pink CPs in shallow-water corals during bleaching leads to a reduction of orange light by 10-20% compared to low-CP tissue. Thus, screening by CPs has an important role in mitigating the light-enhancing effect of coral tissue scattering and skeletal reflection during bleaching. Our results provide the first experimental quantification of the importance of GFP-like proteins in fine-tuning the light microclimate of corals during photoacclimation.

Introduction: After COVID-19 restrictions, hybrid solutions were established that combined smart working and work in presence. Workplace conditions significantly impact employees' lives, particularly in terms of meeting their needs and promoting their wellbeing. Based on a socio-ecological and multilevel methodology, the UP150 concept (Proactive Office 150) represents a possible innovative solution to meet employees' needs and valorize flexible work. It encourages physical exercise and active breaks during the typical workday by using particular architectural modifications, a dedicated App, and physical activity professionals as wellness coaches. The present study is the last step of the preliminary actions planned to check the benefits of the UP150 concept and aims to explore the workers' perceptions after experiencing this project. Methods: The qualitative analysis of a preliminary survey (concerning information about the company structure and workers' habits) performed before conducting a randomized controlled trial intervention study and the analysis of the semi-structured interviews after 8 weeks of a UP150 experience served as datasets for this study and have been examined and discussed. Results: In the preliminary survey, the young (under 40) and generally active (57% of the workers) reported being motivated to exercise but inhibited by a lack of time and a heavy workload. After 8 weeks at a modified workplace designed in accordance with the motive behind the UP150, the workers displayed noticeable positive perceptions and appreciation. Discussion: The qualitative analysis confirmed and supported the effectiveness of the UP150 concept that previous research had already found in quantitative parameters related to employees' motor efficiency, psychophysical status, and amount of physical activity. Background: Well-being at school is a recurrent hot topic within the educational field as a crucial issue for societies. Teachers often face tension with pupils and colleagues. Well-being is very often considered an individual achievement requiring individual measurement and support. This paper, in contrast, applies an approach that supports an ecological perspective of school well-being, implying a complex and multi-dimensional development investment. Methods: The paper investigates an innovative program initiative aimed at providing support to 50 Italian schools that have been deemed as critical for specific aspects (pupils' levels of learning, discomfort among teachers, scarce innovativeness, etc.) through evaluative qualitative research. Results: This work sheds light on well-being as a dynamic construct created through an integrative effort in which many factors can play a role. These factors are the possibility of professional tutoring to help engage the school management and involve teachers in a bottom-up involvement, the development of creative initiatives and innovative projects to respond to context-based challenges and pupils' needs, and the availability of space and time for collective sharing of ideas among teachers. These processes are closely related to the concept of well-being, which appears to be a systemic construct, rather than an issue related to the single individual. Conclusions: Focusing on the representation of schools' managers and tutors involved in the program, this research illustrates the application of an ecological perspective that creates well-being through social and productive sustainability processes.

Although there are several studies reporting the beneficial role of sports in immigrant health, more research is needed to understand whether and how these activities can guide the psychological sense of community (SOC) and well-being outcomes. This study aims at exploring how sport participation among immigrants contributes to developing their SOC and subjective well-being. We analyzed the experiences of 17 immigrants participating in Balon Mundial (BM), an annual multicultural football tournament in Turin (Italy). A thematic deductive theory-driven analysis was implemented based on in-depth interviews. BM developed a psychological SOC by providing immigrants with a safe space-based on norms of accessibility and fair play-to mutually share traditions while forming positive and trusting bonds. All these dimensions of the tournament were connected to an enhancement of immigrants' subjective well-being in terms of happiness, self-care, sense of acceptance and cultural intelligence. Sport participation can sustain immigrants' psychological SOC and subjective well-being under specific conditions: (a) when norms are developed based on inclusion; and (b) when a shared goal and history are built among participants.

Background: In the coming years, HR in the banking industry will need to play a leading role to develop human capital management, based on people care, evaluation, development, and training. To properly face this change in one of the biggest Italian banks we wanted to contribute to understanding the actual HR areas of change and examine how HR roles are dealing with “being on the frontline” of an unparalleled organisational evolution. Methods: Six focus-group sessions with up to 10 participants per session. Results: The crucial issue that emerged is a profound rupture and crisis that showed the (already existing) fragilities of the HR role interpretation: develop a new synergic relationship with the top management; define a stronger and wider organisational mandate; establish structured moments of discussion between professionals. Conclusion: HR roles in the banking context, especially after the pandemic, entail a high emotional burden related to role assumption. Specifically, our research highlighted the need to discuss the evolution of the HR role with top management, the need for synergies and a definition of the organisational mandate that allows wider participation in terms of decision-making and planning, and finally the need for supervision of HR roles.

Background: The development of alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is related to chronic excessive alcohol use. However, features of early-stage ACM are still unclear. We assessed echocardiographic characteristics of patients with alcohol dependence (DSM-IV criteria) during a six-month treatment period. Methods: Active drinking patients, heavy alcohol users, without heart disease, referred to our Alcohol Addiction Unit were enrolled in the study. After signing informed consent, patients started outpatient treatment program. Echocardiography was performed at enrollment, then three and six months afterwards, by cardiologists blinded to drinking status. Results: Forty-three patients (36 males, 7 females) were enrolled. At six months, 20 patients (46.5%) reduced alcohol consumption below heavy drinking levels. Although within normal range, baseline mean IVS thickness and mean LVDD were significantly higher (p < 0.001) and mean EF significantly reduced (p = 0.009), as compared to age-matched mean references. Mean E/A ratio, DcT and LA diameter were significantly different (p < 0.001) from mean references, but within normal range. Baseline mean E/e' ratio was significantly higher than the mean reference (p < 0.001) and out of the normal range. A significant correlation between the number of drinks per drinking days in the 7 days before baseline assessment and E/e' ratio was observed (p = 0.028). After six months, a trend-level reduction of mean E/e' ratio (p = 0.051) was found in the whole sample; this reduction was statistically significant (p = 0.041) among patients reducing drinking, compared to baseline. Conclusions: Altered E/e' ratio may characterize early-ACM before the occurrence of relevant echocardiographic alterations. The reduction of alcohol consumption could restore this alteration after six months.

Purpose: The purpose of this manuscript is twofold. First, this manuscript explores how dialogic evaluation (DE), as a participatory evaluation tool, develops inter-organizational learning (IOL). Second, based on empirical analysis, the work provides pragmatic insights to support practitioners in implementing a facilitative framework grounded in DE for the increased uptake of IOL. Design/methodology/approach: Two cases of multi-stakeholder partnerships in sport for development and peace (SDP) in Italy were analyzed and compared to explore whether and how the implementation of DE supported the development of IOL. Findings: In both cases, applying a three-phase DE process supported several IOL outcomes, such as common knowledge, new innovative solutions development and transfer of new acquisitions. Indeed, DE promoted three key IOL objectives: the emergence of latent relational dimensions and issues to bridge multiple levels; intra- and inter-redefinition and intersection of boundaries; awareness of relevance and usefulness of what was accomplished during the partnership. This paper also discusses some practical insights for DE methodology implementation to activate IOL. Originality/value: This research contributes to the understanding of an effective IOL by developing synergies from network interactions. Moreover, the researcher applied a novel methodology, DE, in IOL’s research domain, focusing on a different context and setting such as SDP.

There is growing appreciation for astrocyte heterogeneity both across and within central nervous system (CNS) regions, as well as between intact and diseased states. Recent work identified multiple astrocyte subpopulations in mature brain. Interestingly, one subpopulation (Population C) was shown to possess significantly enhanced synaptogenic properties in vitro, as compared with other astrocyte subpopulations of adult cortex and spinal cord. Following spinal cord injury (SCI), damaged neurons lose synaptic connections with neuronal partners, resulting in persistent functional loss. We determined whether SCI induces an enhanced synaptomodulatory astrocyte phenotype by shifting toward a greater proportion of Population C cells and/or increasing expression of relevant synapse formation-associated genes within one or more astrocyte subpopulations. Using flow cytometry and RNAscope in situ hybridization, we found that astrocyte subpopulation distribution in the spinal cord did not change to a selectively synaptogenic phenotype following mouse cervical hemisection-type SCI. We also found that spinal cord astrocytes expressed synapse formation-associated genes to a similar degree across subpopulations, as well as in an unchanged manner between uninjured and SCI conditions. Finally, we confirmed these astrocyte subpopulations are also present in the human spinal cord in a similar distribution as mouse, suggesting possible conservation of spinal cord astrocyte heterogeneity across species.

We present the discovery and characterisation of two transiting planets observed by \textit{TESS} in the light curves of the young and bright (V=9.67) star HD73583 (TOI-560). We perform an intensive spectroscopic and photometric space- and ground-based follow-up in order to confirm and characterise the system. We found that HD73583 is a young ($\sim 500$~Myr) active star with a rotational period of $12.08 \pm 0.11 $\,d, and a mass and radius of $ 0.73 \pm 0.02 M_\odot$ and $0.65 \pm 0.02 R_\odot$, respectively. HD73583 b ($P_b=6.3980420 _{ - 0.0000062 }^{+0.0000067}$ d) has a mass and radius of $10.2 _{-3.1}^{+3.4} M_\oplus$ and$2.79 \pm 0.10 R_\oplus$, respectively, that gives a density of $2.58 _{-0.81}^{ 0.95} {\rm g\,cm^{-3}}$. HD73583 c ($P_c= 18.87974 _{-0.00074 }^{+0.00086}$) has a mass and radius of $9.7_{-1.7} ^ {+1.8} M_\oplus$ and $2.39_{-0.09}^{+0.10} R_\oplus$, respectively, this translates to a density of $3.88 _{-0.80}^{+0.91} {\rm g\,cm^{-3}}$. Both planets are consistent with worlds made of a solid core surrounded by a volatile envelope. Because of their youth and host star brightness, they both are excellent candidates to perform transmission spectroscopy studies. We expect ongoing atmospheric mass-loss for both planets caused by stellar irradiation. Using 3D radiative MHD simulations and Lyman-$\alpha$ transit calculations, we investigate the effect of magnetic fields on the observational signatures of atmospheric escape in exoplanets. Using the same stellar wind, we vary the planet's dipole field strength ($B_p$) from 0 to 10G. For $B_p<3$G, the structure of the escaping atmosphere begins to break away from a comet-like tail following the planet ($B_p=0$), as we see more absorbing material above and below the orbital plane. For $B_p\geq3$G, we find a ``dead-zone'' around the equator, where low velocity material is trapped in the closed magnetic field lines. The dead-zone separates two polar outflows where absorbing material escapes along open field lines, leading to a double tail structure, above and below the orbital plane. We demonstrate that atmospheric escape in magnetised planets occurs through polar outflows, as opposed to the predominantly night-side escape in non-magnetised models. We find a small increase in escape rate with $B_p$, though this should not affect the timescale of atmospheric loss. As the size of the dead-zone increases with $B_p$, so does the line centre absorption in Lyman-$\alpha$, as more low-velocity neutral hydrogen covers the stellar disc during transit. For $B_p<3$G the absorption in the blue wing decreases, as the escaping atmosphere is less funnelled along the line of sight by the stellar wind. In the red wing (and for $B_p>3$G in the blue wing) the absorption increases caused by the growing volume of the magnetosphere. We investigated the contribution of unpublished trials to the overall evidence. Results: A total of 16,477 patients were included in 33 trials (20 unpublished with 3190 patients, 13 published with 13,287 patients). 32 trials enrolled only hospitalized patients (including 3 with only intensive care unit patients). Risk of bias was low for 29/33 trials. Of 8495 patients who received convalescent plasma, 1997 died (23%), and of 7982 control patients, 1952 died (24%). Groundwater has been increasingly used to provide low-carbon heating and cooling of buildings with open-loop shallow geothermal systems. Water is generally reinjected into the same aquifer after the heat exchange in order to avoid the aquifer depletion. However, this can result in the return of part of the injected water to the production well(s), causing a gradual thermal alteration known as thermal feedback. Thermal feedback is a major design issue of open-loop shallow systems but, so far, it has been mainly addressed neglecting the heterogeneity of the aquifer properties. This study investigates the impact of aquifer heterogeneity on two main metrics that characterize thermal feedback: thermal breakthrough time (i.e., the first arrival time of the thermal plume) and recirculating ratio (i.e., the fraction of water coming back to production well). A stochastic approach was adopted performing a large number of numerical simulations that cover a wide range of possible scenarios. The results highlight that conductivity heterogeneity plays a major influence on the temperature evolution at the production well. The breakthrough time alone might lead to misleading evaluations of the system efficiency, given that a few particles can reach the production well by traveling in the highly-conductive layers. Conversely, both the heterogeneity and the thermal dispersivity have a negligible impact on the recirculating ratio, which quantifies the long-term evolution of thermal feedback. As a consequence, the available approaches based on advection-only and homogeneous medium are a robust tool to predict the long-term behavior of shallow open-loop geothermal systems.

Many approaches have been used to investigate climate change impacts on agriculture. However, several caveats remain in this field: (i) analyses focus only on a few major crops, (ii) large differences in yield impacts are observed between projections from site-based crops models and Global Gridded Crop Models (GGCMs), (iii) climate change impacts on livestock are rarely quantified, and (iv) several causal relations among biophysical, environmental, and socioeconomic aspects are usually not taken into account. We investigate how assumptions about these four aspects affect agricultural markets, food supply, consumer well-being, and land use at global level by deploying a large-scale socioeconomic model of the global economy with detailed representation of the agricultural sector. We find global welfare impacts several times larger when climate impacts all crops and all livestock compared to a scenario with impacts limited to major crops. At the regional level, food budget can decrease by 10 to 25% in developing countries, challenging food security. The role of land area expansion as a major source of adaptation is highlighted. Climate impacts on crop yields from site-based process crop models generate more challenging socioeconomic outcomes than those from GGCMs. We conclude that the agricultural research community should expand efforts to estimate climate impacts on many more crops and livestock. Background: Among asymptomatic patients with severe carotid artery stenosis but no recent stroke or transient cerebral ischaemia, either carotid artery stenting (CAS) or carotid endarterectomy (CEA) can restore patency and reduce long-term stroke risks. However, from recent national registry data, each option causes about 1% procedural risk of disabling stroke or death. Comparison of their long-term protective effects requires large-scale randomised evidence. Methods: ACST-2 is an international multicentre randomised trial of CAS versus CEA among asymptomatic patients with severe stenosis thought to require intervention, interpreted with all other relevant trials. Patients were eligible if they had severe unilateral or bilateral carotid artery stenosis and both doctor and patient agreed that a carotid procedure should be undertaken, but they were substantially uncertain which one to choose. Patients were randomly allocated to CAS or CEA and followed up at 1 month and then annually, for a mean 5 years. Procedural events were those within 30 days of the intervention. Intention-to-treat analyses are provided. Analyses including procedural hazards use tabular methods. Analyses and meta-analyses of non-procedural strokes use Kaplan-Meier and log-rank methods. The trial is registered with the ISRCTN registry, ISRCTN21144362. Findings: Between Jan 15, 2008, and Dec 31, 2020, 3625 patients in 130 centres were randomly allocated, 1811 to CAS and 1814 to CEA, with good compliance, good medical therapy and a mean 5 years of follow-up. Overall, 1% had disabling stroke or death procedurally (15 allocated to CAS and 18 to CEA) and 2% had non-disabling procedural stroke (48 allocated to CAS and 29 to CEA). Kaplan-Meier estimates of 5-year non-procedural stroke were 2·5% in each group for fatal or disabling stroke, and 5·3% with CAS versus 4·5% with CEA for any stroke (rate ratio [RR] 1·16, 95% CI 0·86–1·57; p=0·33). Self-regulation of learning (SRL) is a key psychological factor that supports young athletes aiming to reach the elite level by promoting their involvement in deliberate practice. We contributed to the validation of the Italian version of the Bartulovic et al. (2017) Self-Regulation of Learning – Self-Report Scale for Sport Practice by testing its factorial structure, reliability, and measurement invariance among elite and non-elite football players, involving 415 male professional, semi-professional, and amateur youth academy players (Mage = 16.2, SD = 1.51). The original six-factor structure (planning, reflection, effort, self-efficacy, self-monitoring, and evaluation) did not fit the data well and a five-factor solution (where self-monitoring and evaluation items load on the same factor, named “self-supervision”) was a better fit. This five-factor solution was measurement invariant across groups of elite and non-elite athletes. We found that elite athletes scored significantly higher than non-elite ones in each SRL subprocess. Implications for future validation studies and for the use of this tool are discussed.

A partir de este modelo se propone un observador para la estimación del par del ciclista utilizando las mediciones disponibles en el control del motor eléctrico, donde la velocidad es estimada a partir de un algoritmo PLL. De esta manera, la estrategia de asistencia se puede aplicar sin la necesidad de sensores de par ni de posición/velocidad. Por último, para validar el observador propuesto, se presentan resultados experimentales utilizando una bicicleta eléctrica rodado 26 conducida por dos conductores de diferente peso., [EN] An observer to estimate the torque made by a cyclist on the rear axle of an electric bicycle is proposed in this work. The observer’s information is used to apply an electric assistance strategy complying with european regulations. For that purpose, the dynamic longitudinal model of the bicycle including the resistant load is obtained. Then, the observer to estimate the cyclist’s torque is presented. This observer is based on the dynamic model of the bicycle and the measurements used for the control of the electric motor, where the speed is estimated from a PLL algorithm. Therefore the assistance strategy can be applied without the need of torque and speed sensors. Finally, to validate the proposed observer, experimental results are presented using an electric bicycle driven by two drivers with different weight.

Here, we study the dichotomy of the escaping atmosphere of the newly discovered close-in exoplanet AU Mic b. On one hand, the high EUV stellar flux is expected to cause a strong atmospheric escape in AU Mic b. On the other hand, the wind of this young star is believed to be very strong, which could reduce or even inhibit the planet's atmospheric escape. AU Mic is thought to have a wind mass-loss rate that is up to $1000$ times larger than the solar wind mass-loss rate ($\dot{M}_\odot$). To investigate this dichotomy, we perform 3D hydrodynamics simulations of the stellar wind--planetary atmosphere interactions in the AU Mic system and predict the synthetic Ly-$\alpha$ transits of AU Mic b. We systematically vary the stellar wind mass-loss rate from a `no wind' scenario to up to a stellar wind with a mass-loss rate of $1000~\dot{M}_\odot$. We find that, as the stellar wind becomes stronger, the planetary evaporation rate decreases from $6.5\times 10^{10}$ g/s to half this value. With a stronger stellar wind, the atmosphere is forced to occupy a smaller volume, affecting transit signatures. Our predicted Ly-$\alpha$ absorption drops from $\sim 20\%$, in the case of `no wind' to barely any Ly-$\alpha$ absorption in the extreme stellar wind scenario. A weighted average current control applied to a three-phase inductor-capacitor-inductor grid-connected battery charger for electric vehicles is presented in this paper. The proposed controller is based on a combination of the partial currents of the system (inverter and grid currents), which are feedback into the control loop. Therefore, by using this approach a reduction of the system order is achieved. The proposed controller allows a bidirectional control of the converter currents, thus allowing both, a controlled charge of the battery and the injection of the current with low distortion in the grid. Coral bleaching, caused by the loss of brownish-colored dinoflagellate photosymbionts from the host tissue of reef-building corals, is a major threat to reef survival. Occasionally, bleached corals become exceptionally colorful rather than white. These colors derive from photoprotective green fluorescent protein (GFP)-like pigments produced by the coral host. There is currently no consensus regarding what causes colorful bleaching events and what the consequences for the corals are. Here, we document that colorful bleaching events are a recurring phenomenon in reef regions around the globe. Our analysis of temperature conditions associated with colorful bleaching events suggests that corals develop extreme coloration within 2 to 3 weeks after exposure to mild or temporary heat stress. We demonstrate that the increase of light fluxes in symbiont-depleted tissue promoted by reflection of the incident light from the coral skeleton induces strong expression of the photoprotective coral host pigments. We describe an optical feedback loop involving both partners of the association, discussing that the mitigation of light stress offered by host pigments could facilitate recolonization of bleached tissue by symbionts. Our data indicate that colorful bleaching has the potential to identify local environmental factors, such as nutrient stress, that can exacerbate the impact of elevated temperatures on corals, to indicate the severity of heat stress experienced by corals and to gauge their post-stress recovery potential. The GJ 436 planetary system is an extraordinary system. The Neptune-size planet that orbits the M3 dwarf revealed in the Ly$\alpha$ line an extended neutral hydrogen atmosphere. This material fills a comet-like tail that obscures the stellar disc for more than 10 hours after the planetary transit. Here, we carry out a series of 3D radiation hydrodynamic simulations to model the interaction of the stellar wind with the escaping planetary atmosphere. With these models, we seek to reproduce the $\sim56\%$ absorption found in Ly$\alpha$ transits, simultaneously with the lack of absorption in H$\alpha$ transit. Varying the stellar wind strength and the EUV stellar luminosity, we search for a set of parameters that best fit the observational data. Based on Ly$\alpha$ observations, we found a stellar wind velocity at the position of the planet to be around [250-460] km s$^{-1}$ with a temperature of $[3-4]\times10^5$ K. The stellar and planetary mass loss rates are found to be $2\times 10^{-15}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ and $\sim[6-10]\times10^9$ g s$^{-1}$, respectively, for a stellar EUV luminosity of $[0.8-1.6]\times10^{27}$ erg s$^{-1}$. For the parameters explored in our simulations, none of our models present any significant absorption in the H$\alpha$ line in agreement with the observations.

We use 3D hydrodynamics simulations followed by synthetic line profile calculations to examine the effect increasing the strength of the stellar wind has on observed Ly-$\alpha$ transits of a Hot Jupiter (HJ) and a Warm Neptune (WN). We find that increasing the stellar wind mass-loss rate from 0 (no wind) to 100 times the solar mass-loss rate value causes reduced atmospheric escape in both planets (a reduction of 65\% and 40\% for the HJ and WN, respectively, compared to the "no wind" case). For weaker stellar winds (lower ram pressure), the reduction in planetary escape rate is very small. However, as the stellar wind becomes stronger, the interaction happens deeper in the planetary atmosphere and, once this interaction occurs below the sonic surface of the planetary outflow, further reduction in evaporation rates is seen. We classify these regimes in terms of the geometry of the planetary sonic surface. "Closed" refers to scenarios where the sonic surface is undisturbed, while "open" refers to those where the surface is disrupted. We find that the change in stellar wind strength affects the Ly-$\alpha$ transit in a non-linear way. Although little change is seen in planetary escape rates ($\simeq 5.5\times 10^{11}$g/s) in the closed to partially open regimes, the Ly-$\alpha$ absorption (sum of the blue [-300, -40 km/s] \& red [40, 300 km/s] wings) changes from 21\% to 6\% as the stellar wind mass-loss rate is increased in the HJ set of simulations. For the WN simulations, escape rates of $\simeq 6.5\times 10^{10}$g/s can cause transit absorptions that vary from 8.8\% to 3.7\%, depending on the stellar wind strength. We conclude that the same atmospheric escape rate can produce a range of absorptions depending on the stellar wind and that neglecting this in the interpretation of Ly-$\alpha$ transits can lead to underestimation of planetary escape rates., Comment: Recommended for publication in MNRAS

We investigate signatures of magnetic fields and activity at the surface and in the prominence system of the ultra-rapid rotator V530 Per, a G-type solar-like member of the young open cluster $\alpha$~Persei. This object has a rotation period shorter than all stars with available magnetic maps. With a time-series of spectropolarimetric observations gathered with ESPaDOnS over 2 nights on the CFHT, we reconstruct the surface brightness and large-scale magnetic field of V530 Per using the Zeeman-Doppler imaging method, assuming an oblate stellar surface. We also estimate the short term evolution of the brightness distribution through latitudinal differential rotation. Using the same data set, we finally map the spatial distribution of prominences through tomography of the H\alpha emission. The brightness map is dominated by a large, dark spot near the pole, accompanied by a complex distribution of bright and dark features at lower latitudes. The magnetic field map is reconstructed as well, most of the large-scale magnetic field energy is stored in the toroidal field component. The main radial field structure is a positive region of about 500 G, at the location of the dark polar spot. The brightness map of V530 Per is sheared by solar-like differential rotation, with a roughly solar value for the difference in rotation rate between the pole and equator. \halpha~is observed in emission, and is mostly modulated by the stellar rotation period. The prominence system is organized in a ring at the approximate location of the co-rotation radius, with significant evolution between the two observing nights. V530 Per is the first example of a solar-type star to have its surface magnetic field and prominences mapped together, which will bring important observational constraints to better understand the role of slingshot prominences in the angular momentum evolution of the most active stars., Comment: Accepted by A&A, 20 pages, 14 figures

Well-being in youth sport is a growing topic in literature. Practicing sports at a youth level is recognized as an important opportunity for growth and development but also an experience that conversely can prove to be tiring and cause discomfort. Sometimes expectations and pressures make it a risky experience. This is emphasized even more when looking at very popular and spectacular sports, such as football in some European Countries; practicing football often solicits the hope of becoming champions one day and thus being able living thanks to the beloved sport. How do young Italian football practitioners feel? What role do relationships with significant others belonging to the world of sport and extra-sport play on the well-being of young athletes? On which specific aspects of psychological well-being (PWB) are these relationships based? Are there any differences between elite and amateurs levels? These are the questions upon which this paper focuses, considering a sample of young Italian football practitioners. Analysis reveals a strong and positive influence of some dimensions of the relationships with significant others on PWB, specifically team effort, coach closeness, and parental learning climate. Moreover, elite players perceive significantly better relationships than sub-elite and amateurs and have significantly higher levels of PWB. Those results provide a first evidence for the importance of good relationships within and outside sport for an effective development of youth football players since they positively influence players’ PWB, which is higher in elite players. It emerges the necessity to further investigate different aspects of PWB and to deepen the knowledge about the meaning of relationship in developmental athletes according to a psychosocial approach.

Intersectoral actions in the sport-for-development field constitute a pre-condition for the implementation of sport-based interventions. At an operational level, the multi-professional group is the tool through which intersectoral collaboration may successfully achieve its aims. Despite the prominent role of the group, this topic is under-researched in terms of understanding intersectoral actions in the sport-for-development field. By applying a psycho-sociological perspective, our research explores the role of the multi-professional group as a limit/resource for sport-for-development workers that operate with vulnerable youth. Following a phenomenological interpretive approach, 12 practitioners (six sport workers and six social workers) participated in semi-structured interviews to explore the role of multi-professional groups as a resource/limit in working with socially vulnerable youth through sport. The results indicate that, in the participants’ experience, belonging to a multi-professional group is a meaningful resource to trigger reflexivity, promote collaboration and integrate their different professions. The interviews highlighted the positive potential of this tool to address the challenges that emerge when working with socially vulnerable youth, including the management of negative emotions, unexpected events and the relationship with young people. Some interviews also suggested that the presence of multiple professions, under certain circumstances, may be a risk when working with youth. These findings have significant value for programme design, strategy and management as they show the value of trans-disciplinary practices as an agenda for social inclusion through sport.

Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs), up-regulated in and around the lesion after traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI), are key extracellular matrix inhibitory molecules that limit axon growth and consequent recovery of function. CSPG-mediated inhibition occurs via interactions with axonal receptors, including leukocyte common antigen- related (LAR) phosphatase. We tested the effects of a novel LAR inhibitory peptide in rats after hemisection at cervical level 2, a SCI model in which bulbospinal inspiratory neural circuitry originating in the medullary rostral ventral respiratory group (rVRG) becomes disconnected from phrenic motor neuron (PhMN) targets in cervical spinal cord, resulting in persistent partial-to-complete diaphragm paralysis. LAR peptide was delivered by a soaked gelfoam, which was placed directly over the injury site immediately after C2 hemisection and replaced at 1 week post-injury. Axotomized rVRG axons originating in ipsilateral medulla or spared rVRG fibers originating in contralateral medulla were separately assessed by anterograde tracing via AAV2-mCherry injection into rVRG. At 8 weeks post-hemisection, LAR peptide significantly improved ipsilateral hemidiaphragm function, as assessed in vivo with electromyography recordings. LAR peptide promoted robust regeneration of ipsilateral-originating rVRG axons into and through the lesion site and into intact caudal spinal cord to reach PhMNs located at C3-C5 levels. Furthermore, regenerating rVRG axons re-established putative monosynaptic connections with their PhMNs targets. Lyman alpha observations of the transiting exoplanet HD209458b enable the study of exoplanet exospheres exposed to stellar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) fluxes, as well as the interacting stellar wind properties. In this study we present 3D hydrodynamical models for the stellar-planetary wind interaction including radiation pressure and charge exchange, together with photoionization, recombination, and collisional ionization processes. Our models explore the contribution of the radiation pressure and charge exchange to the Ly alpha absorption profile in a hydrodynamical framework, and for a single set of stellar wind parameters appropriate for HD209458. We find that most of the absorption is produced by the material from the planet, with a secondary contribution of neutralized stellar ions by charge exchange. At the same time, the hydrodynamic shock heats up the planetary material, resulting in a broad thermal profile. Meanwhile, the radiation pressure yields a small velocity shift of the absorbing material. While neither charge exchange nor radiation pressure provides enough neutrals at the velocity needed to explain the observations at -100kms(-1) individually, we find that the two effects combined with the broad thermal profile are able to explain the observations.

The growth of spectroscopic observations of exoplanetary systems allows the possibility of testing theoretical models and studying the interaction that exoplanetary atmospheres have with the wind and the energetic photons from the star. In this work, we present a set of numerical 3D simulations of HD 209458b for which spectral lines observations of their evaporative atmosphere are available. The different simulations aim to reproduce different scenarios for the star-planet interaction. With our models, we reconstruct the Ly$\alpha$ line during transit and compare with observations. The results allow us to analyse the shape of the line profile under these different scenarios and the comparison with the observations suggests that HD209458b may have a magnetic field off less than 1 G. We also explore the behaviour of the magnesium lines for models with and without magnetic fields.

We homogeneously analyse $\sim 3.2\times 10^5$ photometric measurements for $\sim 1100$ transit lightcurves belonging to $17$ exoplanet hosts. The photometric data cover $16$ years 2004--2019 and include amateur and professional observations. Old archival lightcurves were reprocessed using up-to-date exoplanetary parameters and empirically debiased limb-darkening models. We also derive self-consistent transit and radial-velocity fits for $13$ targets. We confirm the nonlinear TTV trend in the WASP-12 data at a high significance, and with a consistent magnitude. However, Doppler data reveal hints of a radial acceleration about $(-7.5\pm 2.2)$~m/s/yr, indicating the presence of unseen distant companions, and suggesting that roughly $10$ per cent of the observed TTV was induced via the light-travel (or Roemer) effect. For WASP-4, a similar TTV trend suspected after the recent TESS observations appears controversial and model-dependent. It is not supported by our homogeneus TTV sample, including $10$ ground-based EXPANSION lightcurves obtained in 2018 simultaneously with TESS. Even if the TTV trend itself does exist in WASP-4, its magnitude and tidal nature are uncertain. Following an ethnographic approach, the study explores the meaning of inclusion and intercultur-Following an ethnographic approach, this study explores the meanings of inclusion and interculturalism as conveyed by some performing arts and urban sport groups in the city of Milan. Results show a big presence of young people in public space, with a massive participation of young immigrants coming from the Philippines and South America. Concerning social inclusion, the groups revealed an implicit agreement of space sharing and self-regulation which testify to a predisposition to openness with others. The real acknowledgment of diversity, which is a specificity of interculturalism, occurs only under particular circumstances: during the performer-spectator relationship, and when practitioners belonged to the same disciplines. The research also shows the presence of transcultural processes among these practices.

Traditional timber harvests on steep slopes have been conducted through labor-intensive and sometimes environmentally impactful methods, such as manual felling with chainsaws and extraction using bladed skid trails, winching, or cable yarding. Ground-based mechanized harvesting and primary transportation methods such as cut-to-length harvesters and forwarders have emerged in some parts of the world as low-impact, safe, and efficient alternatives to the aforementioned systems. However, when mechanized operations are used on steep terrain, problems such as poor stability, loss of traction, and increased soil disturbance can occur. Tethered or winch-assisted logging practices are being tested and applied in several countries to adapt to challenges associated with operating equipment on steep slopes while minimizing environmental impact. To better understand the feasibility of these systems, we conducted a designed experiment to quantify changes in soil properties and predicted erosion resulting from varying numbers of passes and payload levels by a forwarder operating on slopes ranging from 27 to 38 degrees. The machine was equipped with two different track configurations, tethered by either a machine-mounted or self-contained winch, in eucalyptus plantations in Brazil. On low slopes, bulk density significantly increased, but it did not increase on steeper slopes; this demonstrates traction winches’ effectiveness at reducing concentrated ground pressures. Rut depths were minimal and decreased with increasing slope classes due to reduced track slippage. Predicted erosion rates were high, primarily due to the extremely steep, long slopes and lack of adequate cover in some portions of the trail, illustrating the importance of proper erosion management practices on steep slopes.

Lactate produced by muscle during high-intensity activity is an important end product of glycolysis that supports whole body metabolism. The lactate shuttle model suggested that lactate produced by glycolytic muscle fibers is utilized by oxidative fibers. MCT4 is a proton coupled monocarboxylate transporter preferentially expressed in glycolytic muscle fibers and facilitates the lactate efflux. Here we investigated the exercise capacity of mice with disrupted lactate shuttle due to global deletion of MCT4 (MCT4−/−) or muscle-specific deletion of the accessory protein Basigin (iMSBsg−/−). Although MCT4−/− and iMSBsg−/− mice have normal muscle morphology and contractility, only MCT4−/− mice exhibit an exercise intolerant phenotype. In vivo measurements of compound muscle action potentials showed a decrement in the evoked response in the MCT4−/− mice. This was accompanied by a significant structural degeneration of the neuromuscular junctions (NMJs). We propose that disruption of the lactate shuttle impacts motor function and destabilizes the motor unit.

Compromise in inspiratory breathing following cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) is caused by damage to descending bulbospinal axons originating in the rostral ventral respiratory group (rVRG) and consequent denervation and silencing of phrenic motor neurons (PhMNs) that directly control diaphragm activation. In a rat model of high-cervical hemisection SCI, we performed systemic administration of an antagonist peptide directed against phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), a central inhibitor of neuron-intrinsic axon growth potential. PTEN antagonist peptide (PAP4) robustly restored diaphragm function, as determined with electromyography (EMG) recordings in living SCI animals. PAP4 promoted substantial, long-distance regeneration of injured rVRG axons through the lesion and back toward PhMNs located throughout the C3-C5 spinal cord. These regrowing rVRG axons also formed putative excitatory synaptic connections with PhMNs, demonstrating reconnection of rVRG-PhMN-diaphragm circuitry. Lastly, re-lesion through the hemisection site completely ablated functional recovery induced by PAP4. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that axon regeneration in response to systemic PAP4 administration promoted recovery of diaphragmatic respiratory function after cervical SCI.

The development of models for learning music similarity and feature extraction from audio media files is an increasingly important task for the entertainment industry. This work proposes a novel music classification model based on metric learning and feature extraction from MP3 audio files. The metric learning process considers the learning of a set of parameterized distances employing a structured prediction approach from a set of MP3 audio files containing several music genres. The main objective of this work is to make possible learning a personalized metric for each customer. To extract the acoustic information we use the Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) and make a dimensionality reduction with the use of Principal Components Analysis. We attest the model validity performing a set of experiments and comparing the training and testing results with baseline algorithms, such as K-means and Soft Margin Linear Support Vector Machine (SVM). Marine faunal remains from Grotta d’Oriente (Favignana Island, NW Sicily) offer invaluable snapshots of human-coastal environment interaction in the central Mediterranean from the Late Pleistocene to the Middle Holocene. The long-term shellfish and fish records reflect human exploitation of coastal environments undergoing considerable reorganizations during the postglacial sea level rise and the progressive isolation of Favignana from mainland Sicily. We detected an intensification of marine resource exploitation between ∼9.6 ka and ∼7.8 ka BP, which corresponds with the isolation of Favignana Island and, later on, with the introduction of early agro-pastoral economy in this region. We suggest that a higher investment in marine resource exploitation by late foragers and early farmers in NW Sicily was also supported by an increase in marine productivity in the south Tyrrhenian Sea in the Middle Holocene.

Methods: Seven groups of 9 rats each were investigated: control group without migraine (1 mL saline solution intraperitoneal injection [ip]), control group with induced migraine, NTG+ST group (ST), NTG+ST+curcumin1 (CC1) group – 1 mg/100 g body weight (bw), NTG+ST+CC2 – 2 mg/100 g bw, NTG+ST+liposomal curcumin1 (lCC1) group – 1 mg/100 g bw, and NTG+ST+lCC2 (lCC2) group – 2 mg/100 g bw. NTG and ST were administered as 1 mL ip NTG | 1 mg/100 g bw and 1 mL ip ST | 1 mg/100 g bw, respectively. BACKGROUND: The Italian Registry of Thrombosis in Children (RITI) was established by a multidisciplinary team with the aims of improving knowledge about neonatal and paediatric thrombotic events in Italy and providing a preliminary source of data for the future development of specific clinical trials and diagnostic-therapeutic protocols. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analysed the subset of RITI data concerning paediatric systemic venous thromboembolic events that occurred between January 2007 and June 2013. RESULTS: Eighty-five deep venous thromboses and seven pulmonary emboli were registered in the RITI. A prevalence peak was observed in children aged 10 to 18 years and, unexpectedly, in children aged 1 to 5 years. A central venous line was the main risk factor (55% of venous thromboembolic events); surgery (not cardiac) (25%), concomitant infections (23%) and malignancy (22%) were the clinical conditions most often associated with the onset of venous thromboembolism. There was a diagnostic delay of more than 24 hours in 37% of the venous thromboembolic events. Doppler ultrasound was the most widely used test for the objective diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis (87%). Antithrombotic therapy was administered in 96% of venous thromboembolic events, mainly low molecular weight heparin (60%). In 2% of cases recurrences occurred, while post-thrombotic syndrome developed in 8.5% of cases. DISCUSSION: Although the data from the RITI are largely in agreement with published data, peaks of prevalence of thrombosis, risk factors and objective tests used for the diagnosis showed some peculiarities which may deserve attention.
