Search

A new generation of radio telescopes with excellent sensitivity, instantaneous {\it uv} coverage, and large fields of view, are providing unprecedented opportunities for performing commensal transient searches. Here we present such a commensal search in deep observations of short gamma-ray burst fields carried out with the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa at 1.3 GHz. These four hour observations of eight different fields span survey lengths of weeks to months. We also carry out transient searches in time slices of the full observations, at timescales of 15 minutes, and 8 seconds. We find 122 variable sources on the long timescales, of which 52 are likely active galactic nuclei, but there are likely also some radio flaring stars. While the variability is intrinsic in at least two cases, most of it is consistent with interstellar scintillation. In this study, we also place constraints on transient rates based on state-of-the-art transient simulations codes. We place an upper limit of $2\times10^{-4}$ transients per day per square degree for transients with peak flux of 5 mJy, and an upper limit of $2.5\times10^{-2}$ transients per day per square degree for transients with a fluence of 10 Jy ms, the minimum detectable fluence of our survey.

Magnetars are slowly-rotating neutron stars with extremely strong magnetic fields ($10^{13-15}$ G), episodically emitting $\sim100$ ms long X-ray bursts with energies of $\sim10^{40-41}$ erg. Rarely, they produce extremely bright, energetic giant flares that begin with a short ($\sim0.2$ s), intense flash, followed by fainter, longer lasting emission modulated by the magnetar spin period (typically 2-12 s), thus confirming their origin. Over the last 40 years, only three such flares have been observed in our local group; they all suffered from instrumental saturation due to their extreme intensity. It has been proposed that extra-galactic giant flares likely constitute a subset of short gamma-ray bursts, noting that the sensitivity of current instrumentation prevents us from detecting the pulsating tail, while the initial bright flash is readily observable out to distances $\sim 10-20$ Mpc. Here, we report X- and gamma-ray observations of GRB 200415A, which exhibits a rapid onset, very fast time variability, flat spectra and significant sub-millisecond spectral evolution. These attributes match well with those expected for a giant flare from an extra-galactic magnetar, noting that GRB 200415A is directionally associated with the galaxy NGC 253 ($\sim$3.5 Mpc away). The detection of $\sim3$ MeV photons provides definitive evidence for relativistic motion of the emitting plasma. The observed rapid spectral evolution can naturally be generated by radiation emanating from such rapidly-moving gas in a rotating magnetar.

In this study we have compared coronal loops in the Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) on-board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) with coronal loops from the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE). The purpose of which is to quantitatively and qualitatively examine the effects of spatial resolution on the width of coronal loops and implications for how a coronal loop is defined. Out of twenty-two loop sections analyzed, we find that none of them were resolved in EIT and none of them were close to the width of the TRACE loops. These findings suggest that coronal loops are unresolved in EIT. We also find examples of how unresolved loops can be quite misleading. We have also found that many of the TRACE loops that we have analyzed may be unresolved as well. Our findings emphasize the importance of studying loop width in order to better understand coronal loops and also emphasize the need for instruments with higher spatial resolution.
