Abstract

The project presented in this paper aims to formulate a recommendation framework that consolidates the higher education students’ particulars such as their academic background, current study and student activity records, their attended higher education institution’s expectations of graduate attributes and self-assessment of their own generic competencies. The gap between the higher education students’ generic competence development and their current statuses such as their academic performance and their student activity involvement was incorporated into the framework to come up with a recommendation for the student activities that lead to their generic competence development. For the formulation of the recommendation framework, the data mining tool Orange with some programming in Python and machine learning models was applied on 14,556 students’ activity and academic records in the case higher education institution to find out three major types of patterns between the students’ participation of the student activities and (1) their academic performance change, (2) their programmes of studies, and (3) their English results in the public examination. These findings are also discussed in this paper.

Abstract

Copy number variants (CNVs) represent major etiologic factors in rare genetic diseases. Current clinical CNV interpretation workflows require extensive back-and-forth with multiple tools and databases. This increases complexity and time burden, potentially resulting in missed genetic diagnoses. We present the Suite for CNV Interpretation and Prioritization (SCIP), a software package for the clinical interpretation of CNVs detected by whole-genome sequencing (WGS). The SCIP Visualization Module near-instantaneously displays all information necessary for CNV interpretation (variant quality, population frequency, inheritance pattern, and clinical relevance) on a single page—supported by modules providing variant filtration and prioritization. SCIP was comprehensively evaluated using WGS data from 1027 families with congenital cardiac disease and/or autism spectrum disorder, containing 187 pathogenic or likely pathogenic (P/LP) CNVs identified in previous curations. SCIP was efficient in filtration and prioritization: a median of just two CNVs per case were selected for review, yet it captured all P/LP findings (92.5% of which ranked 1st). SCIP was also able to identify one pathogenic CNV previously missed. SCIP was benchmarked against AnnotSV and a spreadsheet-based manual workflow and performed superiorly than both. In conclusion, SCIP is a novel software package for efficient clinical CNV interpretation, substantially faster and more accurate than previous tools (available at https://github.com/qd29/SCIP , a video tutorial series is available at https://bit.ly/SCIPVideos ).

Abstract

BackgroundAlthough often associated with holoprosencephaly, little detail of the histopathology of cyclopia is available. Here, we describe the ocular findings in a case of trisomy 13 to better understand the histogenesis of the rosettes, or tubules, characteristic of the retinal dysplasia associated with this condition.MethodsA full pediatric autopsy was performed of a near term infant who died shortly after birth from multiple congenital anomalies including fused facial-midline structures. A detailed histopathological study of the ocular structures was performed. The expression of interphotoreceptor retinoid-binding protein (IRBP), cellular retinal-binding protein (CRALBP), rod opsin, and Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) were studied by immunohistochemistry.ResultsHoloprosencephaly, and a spectrum of anatomical findings characteristic of Patau's syndrome, were found. Cytogenetic studies demonstrated trisomy 13 [47, XY, +13]. The eyes were fused but contained two developed separate lenses. In contrast, the cornea, and angle structures were hypoplastic, and the anterior chamber had failed to form. The retina showed areas of normally laminated neural retina, whereas in other areas it was replaced by numerous neuronal rosettes. Histological and immunohistochemical studies revealed that the rosettes were composed of differentiated retinal neurons and Müller cell glia. In normally laminated retina, Shh expression was restricted to retinal-ganglion cells, and to a population of neurons in the inner zone of the outer nuclear layer. In contrast, Shh could not be detected in the dysplastic rosettes.ConclusionThe histopathology of cyclopia appears to be more complex than what may have been previously appreciated. In fact, the terms "cyclopia" and "synophthalmia" are misnomers as the underlying mechanism is a failure of the eyes to form separately during development. BackgroundAlthough often associated with holoprosencephaly, little detail of the histopathology of cyclopia is available. Here, we describe the ocular findings in a case of trisomy 13 to better understand the histogenesis of the rosettes, or tubules, characteristic of the retinal dysplasia associated with this condition.MethodsA full pediatric autopsy was performed of a near term infant who died shortly after birth from multiple congenital anomalies including fused facial-midline structures. Abstract

The construction industry is dynamic in nature. The concept of project success has remained ambiguously defined in the construction industry. Project success is almost the ultimate goal for every project. However, it means different things to different people. While some writers consider time, cost and quality as predominant criteria, others suggest that success is something more complex. The aim of this paper is to develop a framework for measuring success of construction projects. In this paper, a set of key performance indicators (KPIs), measured both objectively and subjectively are developed through a comprehensive literature review. The validity of the proposed KPIs is also tested by three case studies. Then, the limitations of the suggested KPIs are discussed. With the development of KPIs, a benchmark for measuring the performance of a construction project can be set. It also provides significant insights into developing a general and comprehensive base for further research.
