In Humla District, Nepal, agro-pastoralists' confrontations with forces of change in the last generation have altered villagers' abilities to gain access to scarce resources. Development efforts and Nepal's recent armed conflict, in particular, introduced novel technologies and ideologies that affected Humli vulnerabilities. This dissertation is based on field research comparing two Hindu villages in northwest Nepal during 2009 and 2010. One village had more extensive ties to development than the other, and these villagers and other change agents co-created transitional contexts of vulnerability in the post-conflict setting of rural Nepal. An armed conflict dominated the political landscape in Nepal for nearly ten years, ostensibly to uplift downtrodden members of society. Humlis who joined the Maoists during the insurgency had higher average incomes and higher overall socioeconomic statuses than those who did not join. This research challenges conventional wisdom about how `people's wars' motivate individuals of different social positions. Indeed, villagers' responses to development workers and Maoist combatants were surprisingly similar. Certain development processes had de-stabilized parts of the region, and contributed both materially and ideologically to the vulnerabilities people experienced during and following the conflict. The rise of Nepali democracy and the development industry since the early 1990s has presented new social networking and resource options to Humlis as well as exposing them to new risks and vulnerabilities. The villagers who resisted some of these novelties had better food security and health outcomes and less divisive experiences of the conflict than villagers more engaged with development. Based on over a year of fieldwork (participant observation, surveys, interviews, and focus groups), statistical and ArcGIS analyses represent landscapes of health, health-seeking behavior, conflict, and kin networks in northwestern Nepal. [Truncated abstract] The workplace emotion regulation literature has, for the most part, been concerned with emotional labour, which focuses on the employee's regulation of emotional displays during client interactions. It has recently been suggested that emotion work, which arises when employees regulate emotional displays with organisational insiders, such as co-workers, should also be considered. Early empirical research suggests that emotion work may have negative effects including increased job stress, reduced job satisfaction, higher psychological distress and emotional exhaustion. The main aim of the present project is to expand the workplace emotion regulation research beyond the customer interface to include other types of interactions, such as between employees, and in doing so explore this more complete view of workplace emotion regulation. The current research project has four main research objectives: 1) to consolidate the emotional labour literature in order to identify an appropriate conceptualisation and operationalisation of emotional labour, 2) to include emotion work alongside emotional labour within workplace emotion regulation research, 3) to determine the most appropriate way to conceptualise and operationalise emotion work, and 4) to understand the antecedents and consequences of emotion work and emotional labour. Despite considerable research in the area of 'emotional labour' since Hochschild (1983) first coined the term, the area of emotion work has largely been neglected. This study was designed to better understand how children begin to make the transition from seeing the natural world to scientifically observing the natural world during shared family activity in an informal learning environment. Specifically, this study addressed research questions: 1) What is the effect of differences in parent conversational style and disciplinary knowledge on children's observations of biological phenomena? 2) What is the relationship between parent disciplinary knowledge and conversational style to children's observations of biological phenomena? and 3) Can parents, regardless of knowledge, be trained to use a teaching strategy with their children that can be implemented in informal learning contexts? To address these questions, 79 parent-child dyads with children 6-10 years old participated in a controlled study in which half of the parents used their natural conversational style and the other half were trained to use particular conversational strategies during family observations of pollination in a botanical garden. Parents were also assigned to high and low knowledge groups according to their disciplinary knowledge of pollination. Data sources included video recordings of parent-child observations in a garden, pre-post child tasks, and parent surveys. Findings revealed that parents who received training used the conversational strategies more than parents who used their natural conversational style. Parents and children who knew more about pollination at the start of the study exhibited higher levels of disciplinary talk in the garden, which is to be expected. However, the use of the conversational strategies also increased the amount of disciplinary talk in the garden, independent of what families knew about pollination. The extent to which families engaged in disciplinary talk in the garden predicted significant variance in children's post-test scores. Using this concept, a double lap joint test specimen was developed to investigate the damage mechanisms in solder joints for electronic packaging applications under cyclic loading conditions. Analytical results are derived for the plastic shear strain at the free edges of such a specimen using a shear lag model. Results are also presented for the strain energy release rate for steady state crack growth. Experimental results and observations are presented for the damage processes in lead-tin eutectic solder joints between PZT-5H adherends. The lifetime of a specimen can be divided into two regimes: initiation and steady crack growth. Cracking was generally observed to initiate at voids and other defects in the solder joint. The time to initiate damage, the total joint life, and crack growth rates were quantified as a function of applied loading. Data for damage initiation was quite scattered, reflecting the variation in joint quality, but broadly conformed to a Coffin-Manson relationship. The data for crack growth rate approximately corresponded to a Paris law at higher applied voltages. At lower voltages, a strong dependence on frequency was observed, and there was evidence of a threshold strain-energy release rate. Crack growth rates increased with increasing temperature over the range 0- 25°C, but decreased up to 80°C. This dissertation investigates the institutional production of an American national visual memory through the commemorative display of historical photographs. Commemorative display communicates a sense of collective identity and memory through the use of artifacts of the past. It is one of the methods by which a society constructs and communicates a sense of nationalism. These issues were explored through the Depression era Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information photograph collection as it has been used in exhibits and texts over the last fifty years. Specific attention was given to the changing balance of images of extreme poverty and those of middle-class small town. Four approaches were utilized, each providing a different perspective of this phenomenon. A historical analysis of the cultural and economic context, and the initial production and use of the photographs during the period from 1935 to 1960 was made. An in-depth investigation was made, through exhibit records and interviews, of the selection practices of two retrospective exhibits of the collection; "The Bitter Years, 1935-1941" at the Museum of Modern Art in 1962, and "Documenting America, 1935-1943" at the Library of Congress in 1988. A textual analysis of the range of uses to which a sample of the better known photographs have been put over the last 50 years was used as a measure of the discursive production of a national memory of the Depression. Finally, the critical formation of a specifically 'artistic' reputation for some of the FSA-OWI photographers was examined as also constructive of the meaning and evaluation of the photographs. This study shows that when social relationships change, the visual memory changes. In other words, when the social discourse and policy through which the poor are dealt with changes, the visualization of them in the public culture also changes. And also, when the social body changes, generationally, the memory also changes. Those images important to

Distressed and impaired professionals represent a problem to the professions and the consumers of their services. Little data is available on the distressed psychologist. This study, endorsed by the Board of Professional Affairs of the American Psychological Association, was concerned with developing a data base in the following areas: (1) the prevalence and types of mental disorder among psychologists, (2) characteristics of distressed psychologists, (3) ethical and legal violations committed by distressed psychologists, (4) procedures for identifying and handling these psychologists, and (5) treatment resources. A questionnaire was sent to the fifty state licensing boards in psychology, the fifty state psychological associations, and one percent of the total number of licensed psychologists listed in the National Register of Health Service Providers. This one percent was selected by a stratified random sampling by state. Results indicated that distressed psychologists represent a significant problem to the profession due to the ethical/legal violations they commit and the adverse impact of their distress on professional performance. Distressed psychologists were also found to rate the impact of their distress on performance significantly less adversely than did their colleagues. Most frequently occurring problems among distressed psychologists were depression, alcohol abuse/dependence, and personality disorder. Differences were found on the following dimensions between distressed psychologists who committed no known violations and those who committed violations: rated adverse impact of distress on performance, type of problem, the frequency with which colleagues intervened, the frequency with which the distressed psychologists themselves took some action in regard to their problems, types of intervention made, and outcome. State licensing boards and psychological associations were found to have little contact with distressed psychologists who commit no violations
