We present laboratory experiments on the growth of a tubular ice structure surrounding a plume of cold brine that descends under gravity into water with a higher freezing point. Brinicles are geological analogues of these structures found under sea ice in the polar regions on Earth. Brinicles are hypothesized to exist in the oceans of other celestial bodies, and being environments rich in minerals, serve a potentially analogous role as an ecosystem on icy-ocean worlds to that of submarine hydrothermal vents on Earth.

What have the Greeks ever done for us? Everything. This short commentary celebrating the earliest history of origin of life research seeks to bring to the attention of the community of origin of life researchers that there is a much longer tradition of scientific theories in this subject than some people are aware of; there are 2500 years of thinking that we should not forget about. In Ionian Greece, Thales initiated ideas that we can see as the beginnings of science itself. Anaximander, his pupil, was particularly interested in the origins of the world, including how life had arisen, and proposed a species of proto-evolutionary theory of the origin of life. 2500 years ago, Anaxagoras left Ionia for Athens taking ideas of scientific thinking with him. Anaxagoras is credited with being the originator of a further theory of the origin of life, that of panspermia. The scientific conception of knowledge was attacked almost immediately, and Anaxagoras ended up exiled, but that idea of the knowability of things survived and led, many centuries later, to the scientific revolution and to our current human civilization.

Menilites, intriguing botryoidal rocks found in Galera, Granada, Spain, have been examined through a multidisciplinary approach integrating mineralogical analysis and advanced imaging techniques. Characterized as opal and dolomite-bearing rocks, their complex morphologies and diverse internal structures prompted an investigation into their origin. Employing microfocus X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray computed tomography, we present a detailed study of the menilites, revealing opal-A, opal-CT, dolomite and quartz as primary constituents. Notably, the internal homogeneity contrasts with the diverse external shapes. The proposed hypothesis suggests a seismic influence in menilite formation. Seismic events in porous environments above the water table may induce fluidization, resulting in the distinctive menilite structures. Osmotic pressure differences between nodules and the surrounding rock, coupled with fluidization during seismic events, could explain the observed morphologies. Validation of the proposed hypothesis requires further fieldwork and analogue experimentation. The last years have witnessed remarkable advances in our understanding of the emergence and consequences of topological constraints in biological and soft matter. Examples are abundant in relation to (bio)polymeric systems and range from the characterization of knots in single polymers and proteins to that of whole chromosomes and polymer melts. At the same time, considerable advances have been made in the description of the interplay between topological and physical properties in complex fluids, with the development of techniques that now allow researchers to control the formation of and interaction between defects in diverse classes of liquid crystals. Thanks to technological progress and the integration of experiments with increasingly sophisticated numerical simulations, topological biological and soft matter is a vibrant area of research attracting scientists from a broad range of disciplines. However, owing to the high degree of specialization of modern science, many results have remained confined to their own particular fields, with different jargon making it difficult for researchers to share ideas and work together towards a comprehensive view of the diverse phenomena at play. Compelled by these motivations, here we present a comprehensive overview of topological effects in systems ranging from DNA and genome organization to entangled proteins, polymeric materials, liquid crystals, and theoretical physics, with the intention of reducing the barriers between different fields of soft matter and biophysics. Particular care has been taken in providing a coherent formal introduction to the topological properties of polymers and of continuum materials and in highlighting the underlying common aspects concerning the emergence, characterization, and effects of topological objects in different systems. The Strytan Hydrothermal Field (SHF) in basaltic terrain in Iceland is one of the extant alkaline submarine hydrothermal vent systems favoured as analogues for where life on Earth may have begun. To test this hypothesis we analyse the composition, structure, and mineralogy of samples from hydrothermal chimneys generated at the SHF. We find that the chimney precipitates are composed of Mg-silicates including clays of the saponite-stevensite group (high Mg and Si, low Fe and Al), Ca-carbonates and Ca-sulfates. The chimneys comprise permeable structures with pores sizes down to 1 µm or less. Their complex interiors as observed with SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and X-ray CT (computed tomography scanning), exhibit high internal surface areas. EDX (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) analysis reveals an increase in the Mg/Si ratio toward the chimney exteriors. Chemical garden analogue experiments produce similar Mg–silicate chimneys with porous internal structures, indicating that injection-precipitation experiments can be high-fidelity analogues for natural hydrothermal chimneys at the SHF. We conclude that SHF chimneys could have facilitated prebiotic reactions comparable to those proposed for clays and silica gels at putative Hadean to Eoarchean alkaline vents. Analysis of the fluid dynamics shows that these chimneys are intermediate in growth rate compared to faster black smokers though slower than those at Lost City. The SHF is proposed as a prebiotic alkaline vent analogue for basaltic terrains on the early Earth. (Figure presented.)

Bubble plumes are ubiquitous in nature. Instances in the natural world include the release of methane and carbon dioxide from the seabed or the bottom of a lake and from a subsea oil well blowout. This review describes the dynamics of bubble plumes and their various spreading patterns in the surrounding environment. We explore how the motion of the plume is affected by the density stratification in the external environment, as well as by internal processes of dissolution of the bubbles and chemical reaction. We discuss several examples, such as natural disasters, global warming, and fishing techniques used by some whales and dolphins.

More than half a billion years ago in the early Cambrian period, there began an evolutionary arms race between molluscs and their predators, in which molluscs developed armor in the form of a biomineral exoskeleton—a shell—to avoid being eaten by predators that were developing jaws and other novel means of devouring them. The mollusc fabricates multiple layers of shell, each of a particular microstructure of a composite between an inorganic and an organic phase, which are the end result of more than 500 million years of coevolution with increasingly deadly predators. Molluscan biomineralization is an excellent case to study how a biological process produces a complex structure, because the shell is constructed as an extracellular structure in which all construction materials are passed out of the cells to self-assemble outside the cell wall. We consider what is known of the development of multilayer composite armor in the form of nacre (mother of pearl) and the other strong microstructures with which molluscs construct their shells.

Could nature be harnessing quantum mechanics in cilia to optimize the sensitivity of the mechanism of left–right symmetry breaking during development in vertebrates? I evaluate whether mechanosensing — i.e., the detection of a left-right asymmetric signal through mechanical stimulation of sensory cilia, as opposed to biochemical signalling — might be functioning in the embryonic left–right organizer of the vertebrate bodyplan through quantum mechanics. I conclude that there is a possible role for quantum biology in mechanosensing in cilia. The system may not be limited by classical thermal noise, but instead by quantum noise, with an amplification process providing active cooling.

We carry out a nonlinear time series analysis motivated by dynamical systems theory to investigate the links between temperatures on the eastern South Pacific coast, influenced by the Humboldt Current System, and El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. To this aim, we use a set of 16 oceanic and atmospheric temperature time series from Chilean coastal stations distributed between 18 and 45 S. The spectral analysis indicates periodicities that can be related to both internal and external forcing, involving not only ENSO, but also the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, the Southern Annual Mode, the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation and the lunar nodal cycle. The asymptotic neural network test for chaos based on the largest global Lyapunov exponent indicates that the temperature dynamics along the Chilean coast is not chaotic. We use local Lyapunov exponents to characterize the short-term stability of the series. Using a cross-entropy test, we find that two stations in northern Chile, one oceanic (Iquique) and one atmospheric (Arica), present a significant positive cross-dependence between local Lyapunov exponents and ENSO. Iquique is the station that presents the greater number of regional characteristics and correlates with ENSO differently from the rest. The unique large-scale study area, combined with time series from hitherto unused sources (Chilean naval records), reveals the nonlinear dynamics of climate variability in Chile.

Alkaline hydrothermal vents have become a candidate setting for the origins of life on Earth and beyond. This is due to several key features including the presence of gradients of temperature, redox potential, pH, the availability of inorganic minerals, and the existence of a network of inorganic pore spaces that could have served as primitive compartments. Chemical gardens have long been used as experimental proxies for hydrothermal vents. The spelling provided in the manuscript has been retained; please confirm. a set of prebiotic interactions between such inorganic structures and fatty alcohols. The integration of a medium-chain fatty alcohol, decanol, within these inorganic minerals, produced a range of emergent 3 dimensions structures at both macroscopic and microscopic scales. Fatty alcohols can be considered plausible prebiotic amphiphiles that might have assisted the formation of protocellular structures such as vesicles. The experiments presented herein show that neither chemical gardens nor decanol alone promote vesicle formation, but chemical gardens grown in the presence of decanol, which is then integrated into inorganic mineral structures, support vesicle formation. These observations suggest that the interaction of fatty alcohols and inorganic mineral structures could have played an important role in the emergence of protocells, yielding support for the evolution of living cells.

Planktonic gastropods of the suborder Euthecosomata (order Pteropoda) secrete a unique microstructure made of tightly interlocked, space-filling helically coiled aragonite fibers. This material has a high degree of ordering because all fibers are in phase at a given growth plane. The recognition of the helical nature from mere scanning electron micrographs is somewhat uncertain. In addition, three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions of individual helices are hindered by the small dimensions of fibers, and the virtual absence of intervening organic interphases. Here, we (1) reexamine the morphological characteristics of the fibers in fracture and find them compatible with a helical model, (2) provide direct evidence of the helical mode of coiling in the form of anaglyphs, and (3) develop a 3D model, which is fully consistent with the patterns observed in fractures and polished sections. Proposals based on motifs different from helices are not congruent with the observations. Despite this material having been described 50 years ago, there is still debate as to the helical design of such fibers. We provide additional unambiguous evidence that fibers describe true helical trajectories during growth. Establishing their true nature is essential in order to know the spectrum of calcified biomaterials produced by molluscs. This is also a prerequisite for future biomimetic studies aiming at producing bioinspired highly functional materials.

Chemical gardens, self-assembling precipitates that spontaneously form when a metal salt is added to a solution of another precipitating anion, are of interest for various applications including producing reactive materials in controlled structures. Here, we report on two chemical garden reaction systems (CuCl and Cu(NO) seed crystals submerged in sodium silicate) that produced self-assembled microfluidic labyrinths in a vertical 2D Hele-Shaw reactor. The formation of labyrinths as well as the specific growth modes of the precipitate were dependent on the silicate concentration: CuCl labyrinths formed only at 3 and 4 M silicate and Cu(NO) labyrinths formed only at 4 and 5 M silicate. The labyrinth structures contained silicate on the exterior and crystalline material interpreted as hydrated minerals from the metal salt in their interiors. The bubble-guided tubes that form labyrinths can be controlled by changing the angle of the 2D reaction cell; this suggests that future experiments of this type could form self-organizing structures with controlled composition and orientation for use in microfluidics and various materials science applications.

Considering the growing importance of the field of chemobrionics since the term was coined in 2015 and the increase in the number of published papers, it has become necessary to catalogue all the papers published to date. Here, we present the chemobrionics database, which lists all the chemical gardens synthesised according to their anion, cation and experimental protocol. The aim of this database is to encourage the study and dissemination of chemical gardens in order to find new experimental avenues in the field of chemobrionics. As this is such a fruitful field, the database is continuously updated.

Filaments in a planar chemical garden grow following tortuous, erratic paths. We show from statistical mechanics that this scaling results from a self-organized dispersion mechanism. Effective diffusivities as high as 10−5 m2 s−1 are measured in 2D laboratory experiments. This efficient transport is four orders of magnitude larger than molecular diffusion in a liquid, and ensures widespread contact and exchange between fluids in the chemical-garden structure and its surrounding environment.

Methane-rich water moves through conduits beneath the seafloor whose surfaces are formed through precipitation reactions. To understand how such submarine fluid conduit and venting systems form and grow, we develop a detailed mathematical model for this reaction-advection system and we quantify the evolution of an ensemble of similar filaments. We show that this growth can be described by a superposition of advection and dispersion. We analyze analog laboratory experiments of chemical-garden type to study the growth of a single filament undergoing a precipitation reaction with the surrounding environment. We apply these findings to geological fluid conduit and venting systems, showing that their irregular trajectories can lead to very effective spreading within the surrounding seabed, thus enhancing contact and exchanges of chemicals between the conduit and external fluids. We discuss how this methane venting leads to the formation of marine authigenic carbonate rocks, and for confirmation, we analyze two field samples from the Gulf of Cadiz for composition and mineralogy of the precipitates. We note the implications of this work for hydrate melting and methane escape from the seabed.

If life developed in hydrothermal vents, it would have been within mineral membranes. The first proto-cells must have evolved to manipulate the mineral membranes that formed their compartments in order to control their metabolism. There must have occurred a biological takeover of the self-assembled mineral structures of the vents, with the incorporation of proto-biological molecules within the mineral membranes to alter their properties for life's purposes. Here, we study a laboratory analogue of this process: chemical-garden precipitation of the amino acids arginine and tryptophan with the metal salt iron chloride and sodium silicate. We produced these chemical gardens using different methodologies in order to determine the dependence of the morphology and chemistry on the growth conditions, as well as the effect of the amino acids on the formation of the iron-silicate chemical garden. We compared the effects of having amino acids initially within the forming chemical garden, corresponding to the internal zones of hydrothermal vents, or else outside, corresponding to the surrounding ocean. The characterization of the formed chemical gardens using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and scanning electron microscopy demonstrates the presence of amino acids in these structures. The growth method in which the amino acid is initially in the tablet with the iron salt is that which generated chemical gardens with more amino acids in their structures.

The endocochleate coleoid cephalopod Spirula spirula, the only present-day representative of the order Spirulida, secretes a coiled shell consisting of a series of chambers divided by septa and connected by a siphuncle. It is the shell closest to those of Recent and extinct ectochleate cephalopods: nautiloids, ammonoids. Therefore, its study may help to understand which characters remained unchanged or became transformed during the evolution of endocochleates. We have carried out detailed observations on the different structures composing the Spirula shell, with the aim of reconstructing their morphology, distribution, and mutual relationships. Alongside this, we also review the previous profuse terminology. Taking into account the additional information provided by growth lines and crystal orientations, we propose mechanisms for the secretion of the shell structures. All these mechanisms are integrated in a consistent way into a general model of chamber formation. The periostracum is secreted within a distinct periostracal groove. The outer shell layer is secreted externally to the periostracum by the soft tissues lining the shell externally. The inner shell layer is produced by the shell wall mantle, whereas the septa and the siphuncle are made periodically by a differentiated septal/siphuncular mantle. The most adoral septal mantle edge changes from secreting septal to inner shell wall material to produce the mural flap. The adapical ridge is formed by passive precipitates from cameral fluid residues trapped by surface tension, whereas the fibrous prismatic deposits of the connecting ring are biominerals produced remotely within mantle secretions. Homologies with Nautilus and Sepia are discussed.

The aim of this study was to investigate the biomimetic precipitation processes that follow the chemical-garden reaction of brines of CaCl2 and sulfate salts with silicate in alkaline conditions under a Mars-type CO2-rich atmosphere. We characterize the precipitates with environmental scanning electron microscope micrography, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffractometry. Our analysis results indicate that self-assembled carbonate structures formed with calcium chloride can have vesicular and filamentary features. With magnesium sulfate as a reactant a tentative assignment with Raman spectroscopy indicates the presence of natroxalate in the precipitate. These morphologies and compounds appear through rapid sequestration of atmospheric CO2 by alkaline solutions of silica and salts.

We demonstrate that nature has produced a close-packed helical twisted filamentous material in the biomineralization of the mollusk. In liquid crystals, twist-bend nematics have been predicted and observed. We present and analyze evidence that the helical biomineral microstructure of mollusk shells may be formed from such a liquid-crystal precursor.

When confined to a Hele-Shaw cell, chemical gardens can grow as filaments, narrow structures with an erratic and tortuous trajectory. In this work, the methodology applied to studies with horizontal Hele-Shaw cells is adapted to a vertical configuration, thus introducing the effect of buoyancy into the system. The motion of a single filament tip is modeled by taking into account its internal pressure and the variation of the concentration of precipitate that constitutes the chemical garden membrane. While the model shows good agreement with the results, it also suggests that the concentration of the host solution of sodium silicate also plays a role in the growth of the structures despite being in stoichiometric excess.

Chemical gardens are self-assembled structures of mineral precipitates enabled by semi-permeable membranes. To explore the effects of gravity on the formation of chemical gardens, we have studied chemical gardens grown from cobalt chloride pellets and aqueous sodium silicate solution in a vertical Hele-Shaw cell. Through photography, we have observed and quantitatively analysed upward growing tubes and downward growing fingers. The latter were not seen in previous experimental studies involving similar physicochemical systems in 3-dimensional or horizontal confined geometry. To better understand the results, further studies of flow patterns, buoyancy forces, and growth dynamics under schlieren optics have been carried out, together with characterisation of the precipitates with scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry. In addition to an ascending flow and the resulting precipitation of tubular filaments, a previously not reported descending flow has been observed which, under some conditions, is accompanied by precipitation of solid fingering structures. We conclude that the physics of both the ascending and descending flows are shaped by buoyancy, together with osmosis and chemical reaction. The existence of the descending flow might highlight a limitation in current experimental methods for growing chemical gardens under gravity, where seeds are typically not suspended in the middle of the solution and are confined by the bottom of the vessel.

We describe and study the formation of confined chemical garden patterns. At low flow rates of injection of cobalt chloride solution into a Hele-Shaw cell filled with sodium silicate, the precipitate forms with a thin filament wrapping around an expanding "candy floss" structure. The result is the formation of an Archimedean spiral structure. We model the growth of the structure mathematically. We estimate the effective density of the precipitate and calculate the membrane permeability. We set the results within the context of recent experimental and modeling work on confined chemical garden filaments.

Gas and vapor explosions have been involved in industrial accidents since the beginnings of industry. A century ago, at 11:55 am on Friday September 24, 1920, the petroleum barge Warwick exploded in London's docklands and seven men were killed. Understanding what happened when it blew up as it was being refurbished, and how to prevent similar explosions, involves fluid mechanics and thermodynamics plus chemistry. I recount the 1920 accident as an example, together with the history of thermo-kinetic explosions prior to 1920 and up to the present day, and I review the history and the actual state of the science of explosion and the roles of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and chemistry in that science. The science of explosions has been aware of its societal implications from the beginning, but, despite advances in health and safety over the past century, is there still work to do?

Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica was a fertile crescent for the development of number systems. A form of vigesimal system seems to have been present from the first Olmec civilization onwards, to which succeeding peoples made contributions. We discuss the Maya use of the representational redundancy present in their Long Count calendar, a non-power positional number representation system with multipliers 1, 20, 18 × 20, …, 18 × 20. We demonstrate that the Mesoamericans did not need to invent positional notation and discover zero at the same time because they were not afraid of using a number system in which the same number can be written in different ways. A Long Count number system with digits from 0 to 20 is seen later to pass to one using digits 0 to 19, which leads us to propose that even earlier there may have been an initial zeroless bijective numeration system whose digits ran from 1 to 20. Mesoamerica was able to make this conceptual leap to the concept of a cardinal zero to perform arithmetic owing to a familiarity with multiple and redundant number representation systems.Zero; Maya; Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica; Number representation systems; Bijective numeration

We have performed and visualized chemical garden growth experiments directly in situ in an environmental scanning electron microscope. The microscope chamber simulates the surface of Mars. We demonstrate that chemical gardens can form under the conditions of temperature and pressure existing on Mars in the presence of liquid water, silicates, and metal salts. Using chemical gardens from aluminum salts, tubes were formed where the external surface is formed principally by silicate and the inner surface is predominantly aluminum oxide-hydroxide. It should thus be expected that similar growths of metal salts may be found in geological explorations of water-rich environments during the search for life on Mars.

Mixing fluids often involves a periodic action, like stirring one's tea. But reciprocating motions in fluids at low Reynolds number, in Stokes flows where inertia is negligible, lead to periodic cycles of mixing and unmixing, because the physics, molecular diffusion excepted, is time reversible. So how can fluid be mixed in such circumstances? The answer involves a geometric phase. Geometric phases are found everywhere in physics as anholonomies, where after a closed circuit in the parameters, some system variables do not return to their original values. We discuss the geometric phase in fluid mixing: geometric mixing. This article is part of the theme issue 'Stokes at 200 (part 2)'.

Tungstate chemical gardens have been prepared for the first time. The synthesis was carried out using cobalt(II) chloride and sodium tungstate. The reaction occurred in three steps: chimney formation, swelling, and upwelling of the chemical garden. This result opens the door to a new variety of materials.

Stingless bees of the genus Tetragonula construct a brood comb with a spiral or a target pattern architecture in three dimensions. Crystals possess these same patterns on the molecular scale. Here, we show that the same excitable-medium dynamics governs both crystal nucleation and growth and comb construction in Tetragonula, so that a minimal coupled-map lattice model based on crystal growth explains how these bees produce the structures seen in their bee combs.

The year 2019 marked the bicentenary of George Gabriel Stokes, who in 1851 described the drag-Stokes drag-on a body moving immersed in a fluid, and 2020 is the centenary of Christopher Robin Milne, for whom the game of poohsticks was invented; his father A. A. Milne's The House at Pooh Corner, in which it was first described in print, appeared in 1928. So this is an apt moment to review the state of the art of the fluid mechanics of a solid body in a complex fluid flow, and one floating at the interface between two fluids in motion. Although we humans have known since the first smokey campfires of prehistory that our activities might alter our local surroundings, the nineteenth century saw the first indications that humankind might alter the global environment; what we currently know as anthropogenic climate change. We are now celebrating the bicentenaries of three figures with a hand in the birth of climate science. George Stokes, John Tyndall and John Ruskin were born in August 1819, August 1820 and February 1819, respectively. We look back from the perspective of two centuries following their births. We outline their contributions to climate science: understanding the equations of fluid motion and the recognition of the need to collect global weather data together with comprehending the role in regulating terrestrial temperature played by gases in the atmosphere. This knowledge was accompanied by fears of the Earth's regression to another ice age, together with others that industrialization was ruining humankind's health, morals and creativity. The former fears of global cooling were justified but seem strange now that the balance has tipped so far the other way towards global warming; the latter, on the other hand, today seem very prescient. Sir George Gabriel Stokes PRS was for 30 years an inimitable Secretary of the Royal Society and its President from 1885 to 1890. Two hundred years after his birth, Stokes is a towering figure in physics and applied mathematics; fluids, asymptotics, optics, acoustics among many other fields. At the Stokes200 meeting, held at Pembroke College, Cambridge from 15-18th September 2019, an invited audience of about 100 discussed the state of the art in all the modern research fields that have sprung from his work in physics and mathematics, along with the history of how we have got from Stokes' contributions to where we are now. This theme issue is based on work presented at the Stokes200 meeting. In bringing together people whose work today is based upon Stokes' own, we aim to emphasize his influence and legacy at 200 to the community as a whole. Clocks run through the history of physics. Galileo conceived of using the pendulum as a timing device on watching a hanging lamp swing in Pisa cathedral; Huygens invented the pendulum clock; and Einstein thought about clock synchronization in his Gedankenexperiment that led to relativity. Stokes derived his law in the course of investigations to determine the effect of a fluid medium on the swing of a pendulum. I sketch the work that has come out of this, Stokes drag, one of his most famous results. And to celebrate the 200th anniversary of George Gabriel Stokes' birth I propose using the time of fall of a sphere through a fluid for a sculptural clock-a public kinetic artwork that will tell the time. Weak bubble plumes carry liquid from the environment upwards and release it at multiple intermediate levels in the form of radial intrusive currents. In this study, laboratory experiments are performed to explore the spreading of turbulent axisymmetric bubble plumes in a liquid with linear density stratification. The thickness, volumetric flowrate and spreading rates of multiple radial intrusions of plume fluid were measured by tracking the movement of dye injected at the source of bubbles. The experimental results are compared with scaling predictions. Our findings suggest that the presence of multiple intrusions reduces their spreading rate, compared to that of a single intrusion. This work is of relevance to the spreading of methane plumes issuing from the seabed in the Arctic Ocean, above methane-hydrate deposits. The slower, multiple spreading favours the presence of methane-rich seawater close to the plume, which may reduce the dissolution of methane in the bubbles, and thus promote the direct transport of methane to the atmosphere.
