Over the last century, genetic diversity in many cattle breeds has been affected by the replacement of traditional local breeds with just a few milk-producing breeds. In the Netherlands, the local Dutch Friesian breed (DF) has gradually been replaced by the Holstein Friesian breed (HF). The objective of this study is to investigate genomewide genetic diversity between a group of historically and recently used DF bulls and a group of recently used HF bulls. Genetic material of 12 historic (hDF), 12 recent DF bulls (rDF), and 12 recent HF bulls (rHF) in the Netherlands was sequenced. Based on the genomic information, different parameters—e.g., allele frequencies, inbreeding coefficient, and runs of homozygosity (ROH)—were calculated. Our findings showed that a large amount of diversity is shared between the three groups, but each of them has a unique genetic identity (12% of the single nucleotide polymorphisms were group-specific). The rDF is slightly more diverged from rHF than hDF. The inbreeding coefficient based on runs of homozygosity (Froh) was higher for rDF (0.24) than for hDF (0.17) or rHF (0.13). Our results also displayed the presence of several genomic regions that differentiated between the groups. In addition, thirteen, forty-five, and six ROH islands were identified in hDF, rDF, and rHF, respectively. The genetic diversity of the DF breed reduced over time, but this did not lead to higher inbreeding levels—especially, inbreeding due to recent ancestors was not increased.

Breed registries have been established for livestock species to maintain the purity of breeds and to document the ancestry of animals. However, a significant number of animals are unregistered with no or incomplete pedigree data and uncertain ancestral breed origin. Although many local livestock breeds are “at risk” on the basis of the number of purebred breeding females in a breed registry, there is often also a reservoir of unregistered animals that may belong to the same breed. However, due to the missing pedigree it is not possible for breed societies or herd books to include those animals in their breeding program for purebred animals. A genetic test was developed to unequivocally determine the breed origin of cattle without pedigree data. Such a test will open up the possibility to incorporate animals without pedigree data in the breed registry that turn out to be purebred based on the test results. In this study we developed and validated such a test. Genotype data (50k SNP array) were used to compose reference populations for six local Dutch cattle breeds. The combination Principal Component Analysis and Random Forest was used to perform SNP selection. A total of 133 informative SNPs were selected to determine breed composition of individual animals. Overall, 82.0% of the animals in the test population are correctly assigned to the breed in question. For Dutch Red and White Friesian and Deep Red Cattle we suggest that if an animal has a percentage for its own breed <0.775 to use the combined percentage of two breeds (Deep Red Cattle with Meuse‐Rhine‐Yssel and Dutch Red and White Friesian with Dutch Friesian). Using this criteria 88.9% (104 out of 117) of the animals in the test population is correctly assigned. The developed test was successful and will be implemented in practice to identify (partly) unregistered individuals as being purebred (or not) for one of the Dutch local cattle breeds.

Molecular characterisation of the three cattle breeds was performed using four microsatellite markers (DRB3, DRBP1, RM185, BM1815) within the BoLA genes, or in close proximity, to assess genetic diversity and to determine the population structure. Ticks infesting the animals naturally were counted and identified. In addition, animals were screened for tick-borne infections (Anaplasma/ Ehrlichia and Babesia/ Theileria) using “catch-all” primers for Anaplasma/ Ehrlichia and Babesia/ Theileria cluster of species. A total of thirty seven alleles were identified across all breeds. Nguni cattle exhibited the highest level of genetic diversity (He = 0.728) and Bonsmara cattle had the lowest level of genetic diversity (He = 0.637). Extensive inbreeding (FIS = 0.247) was observed in Afrikaner cattle while Bonsmara cattle showed evidence of outbreeding (-0.057). The Bayesian cluster at K = 3 revealed genetic admixture between breeds. The overall Anaplasma/ Ehrlichia and Babesia/ Theileria infection prevalence across all breeds was 85% and 53%, respectively. Ticks infesting the animals included species (relative prevalence) of Hyalomma truncatum (35%), Hyalomma turanicum (2%), Hyalomma rufipes (29%), Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi (5%), Rhipicephalus evertsi mimeticus (9.5%), Rhipicephalus simus (16%), Rhipicephaluss appendiculatus (3%) and Amblyomma variegatum (0.5%). The competition for land has become an issue of major concern and cause of conflict, especially between pastoralists and crop farmers, but also between pastoralists and nature conservation institutions. The Biosphere Reserve of W in Benin Republic (WBR) and its surrounding lands are located in the agro-pastoral contact zone in West Africa, enabling competition for land, and affecting the relations between pastoralism and its environment. The general aim of this thesis, therefore, was to understand the relations between pastoralism and its changing natural environment. In terms of land use change, cropland area around WBR expanded, whereas grazing area reduced. Population growth and rising demand for food crops and cash crops were the indirect causes of this loss of grazing lands. Competing claims over land existed between crop farmers and pastoralists, among crop farmers, and among crop farmers, pastoralists, and the WBR authority due to past expropriation, unfair and incomplete implementation of the WBR regulations and the increasing shift of pastoral lifestyle to crop farming. In terms of effects of grazing on plant communities, highly grazed sites had more species diversity than lowly grazed sites. This suggests that the current level of grazing was not damaging plant communities’ diversity. Annual species dominated the surveyed vegetation, suggesting that restoration of grazing lands with perennials requires human intervention. Herding involves taking decisions and moving of livestock in search for feed. Herding decisions are based on traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) of soil, forage and livestock. Pastoralists identified five different soils, which they selected for herding at different times of the year. Perennial grasses were perceived of high nutritional quality, whereas annuals were of low nutritional quality. Afzelia africana had high perceived quality for milk production, whereas Khaya senegalensis had the highest perceived quality for meat productio

Koeien hebben hoorns. Ze vormen een wezenlijk onderdeel van de koe. Maar welke functie hebben ze eigenlijk? Een interview met Ton Baars, onderzoeker melkkwaliteit en dierwelzijn aan het Zwitserse onderzoeksinstituut voor biologische landbouw FiBL.

Alle bedrijfstakken in evenwicht: ecologisch, economisch, maar ook sociaal. Dat is de filosofie achter De Kijfelaar, het biologisch bedrijf van Bavo Verwimp uit Noorderwijk. De vleesveehouderij met blonde d’Aquitaines is een radertje in het grotere geheel, maar is nodig en een bewust gekozen onderdeel.

Het werd een succes, de vijfde editie van de Vlaamse Koeparade. Met ruim honderd inzendingen uit bekende fokstallen, maar ook van nieuwe deelnemers kon Roeselare rekenen op veel belangstelling. Lyly de la Heusière speelde de hoofdrol op de show.

Afgelopen zomer jureerde Manfred Uhrig de nationale show van Duitsland. Zijn optreden oogstte lof, maar de veehouder uit Sulzbach is ook zelf een fanatiek keuringsdeelnemer. Een tweejaarlijkse veiling en de jaarlijkse verkoop van vijftig dekstieren dragen bij aan het op keuringskoeien gerichte fokprogramma.

Een passie voor roodbonte dieren en brede interesse in topgenetica levert een familie vol outcrossbloed op voor de roodbontfokkerij. De Vrendt Gerdines van André Lutke Willink maken faam met fokstier De Vrendt Aram en hoog gemerkerd jeugdig talent.

In het laatste boekjaar stond mrij-stier Marcello voor het tweede jaar op rij bovenaan in de inseminatiestatistieken. De stier dankt zijn populariteit niet alleen aan goede bevruchtingscijfers. Achter Marcello zit een oer-Hollandse, bewezen koefamilie.

In het limousinras waren er veel afvallers onder de geteste stieren. Enkel Esa laat heel mooie verervingscijfers optekenen. In het blonde d’Aquitaineras komen vier nieuwe fokstieren vrij. De nieuwe en echte uitblinker luistert naar de naam Fulgence.

In Bedum verzamelden zich de beste koeien uit de provincie Groningen. Titelverdedigster Elsje 177 maakte de provinciale show tot een spannend spektakel. Twee fokkers domineerden de meest noordelijke show van Nederland.

Simpel werken en genieten van mooie koeien, dat doen Freek Jan en Jannet Eggerink. In Zwitserland vond hij de koeien die bij zij n bedrij f passen, waaronder de recent met 93 punten ingeschreven HHH-seniorenkampioene Plattery Princesse.

In 2015 wonnen ze al de titels in de vaarzen- en de middenklasse. Nu kwamen Southland Windbrook Gina en HBC Goldwyn Daydream op de wintershow West-Brabant uit in achtereenvolgens de midden- en de seniorenklasse en zegevierden ze opnieuw. Als klap op de vuurpijl ging ook de publiekstitel naar Gina.

Op de Drentse wintershow in Pesse kwam vooral de middenklasse ijzersterk voor de dag. Maar de dagzege ging net als op de HHH-show naar seniorkampioene Marie 356.

Iedere organisatie droomt ervan, zeker bij een jubileumeditie: veel blije inzenders doordat de prijzen mooi zijn verdeeld. Het gebeurde in Middenmeer, waar Peter Akkerman het algemeen kampioenschap won en De Taurushoeve de grote verrassing was.

Zelfs de catalogi waren uitverkocht. De eerste UFF-avondkeuring trok veel publiek, dat in Houten de bekende Braxtondochter Holec Redrose Jobra verkoos tot publiekskampioene.

De combinatie van dochtercollecties en een veiling bleek tijdens de Vekis Spring Sale vooral fokkerijgeïnteresseerden op te leveren. Ze zagen Wonder en Danillo hun kunnen bevestigen en Ciderman de meest verrassende debutant zijn.

De Deense Goldwynzoon VH Grafit bracht als eerste belangrijke fokstier de Neblina-familie in het vizier. De populariteit van de Neblina’s neemt op Europese bodem nog voortdurend toe. Vanuit Nederland waaierde de familie breed uit.

Op het melkveebedrijf van de familie Poppe neemt de fokkerij op koeien met een flinke melkplas en functioneel exterieur een belangrijke plaats in. Succes blijft niet uit, want de zelfgefokte stier Poppe Snow kreeg onlangs zijn eerste dochterfokwaarden.

In 1995 publiceerde ze al het naslagwerk ‘Runderrassen van de wereld’. Maar de ontwikkeling van koeienrassen bleef Marleen Felius boeien. Onlangs promoveerde ze erop. ‘Fokkerij zoals we die nu kennen, heeft nog helemaal niet zulke oude papieren.’

372 rassen, 3000 dieren en niet minder dan 1200 inzenders. De veehouderij vormt al sinds 1867 de attractiepool van de landbouwbeurs SIA te Parijs. De elitekeuringen zetten het vakmanschap van de fokkers in de verf en de brede waaier aan aanwezige rassen onderstreept de biodiversiteit in het Franse veehouderijlandschap. Dit jaar eiste de crisis in de sector alle aandacht op van de bezoekers. In zowat alle rassen droegen de fokkers een zwarte rouwband om de arm en brachten voor aanvang van elke keuring de boodschap: ‘Ik ben veehouder en ik wil leven van mijn beroep.’

Welke blonde zorgt voor het meeste rendement? Tijdens de kennisdagen van het blonde d’Aquitainestamboek kunnen fokkers en mesters kennis, ervaringen en meningen met elkaar uitwisselen. Fokker Fredie van Dijk en ‘vleesmannen’ Henk Broeders en Peter Lutke Veldhuis doen alvast een aftrap.

Ten huize Oostvogels delen man en vrouw eenzelfde passie voor de witblauwfokkerij en bezitten – ondanks de leeftijd – nog een tomeloze ambitie voor veeverbetering. Voor jonge ondernemers hebben ze een boodschap: ‘Hou zelf het overzicht.’

Dat het jerseyras opleeft, blijkt wel uit het stijgend aantal inseminaties met jerseystieren de laatste jaren. Mark Ormel, voorzitter van het vijftigjarige jerseystamboek, is een van de weinige tweede generatie jerseyboeren. ‘Het is een gemakkelijk ras, ik ben nog nooit mijn bed uit geweest voor een kalving.’

Het blonde d’Aquitaineras verwelkomde recent vier nieuwe fokstieren in het ki-aanbod. Eén stier springt er figuurlijk uit: Fulgence. In de pedigree van deze topper zijn exterieur en moederkwaliteiten verankerd. Fulgence is breed inzetbaar.

Weinig witblauwe wachtstieren komen bovendrijven na de laatste fokwaardeschatting. Senateur de Mehogne biedt met een positieve fokwaarde voor bespiering en met zijn afwijkende bloedvoering wat meer speelruimte in het ki-aanbod.

Het gasconneras is een van de drie zogenoemde rustieke rassen in Frankrijk. De selectie van het robuuste en resistente ras is dikwijls een voorbeeld geweest voor andere Franse vleesrassen.

In 1995 publiceerde ze al het naslagwerk ‘Runderrassen van de wereld’. Maar de ontwikkeling van koeienrassen bleef Marleen Felius boeien. Onlangs promoveerde ze erop. ‘Fokkerij zoals we die nu kennen, heeft nog helemaal niet zulke oude papieren.

Na bijna dertig jaar piemonteses fokken deed Louis Bonestroo afgelopen oktober voor het eerst mee aan de Nationale Vleesvee Manifestatie . De fokker uit Nunspeet en zijn zoon Robert sleepten meteen de twee hoofdprijzen mannelijk in de wacht.

Witblauwfokker Willy Janssen uit Kasterlee zet alles op alles voor het behalen van goede vruchtbaarheidscijfers bij fokvaarzen en koeien. Het doel is drie keer kalven binnen vier jaar. Om dat te bereiken is het cruciaal om vroeg te beginnen met het insemineren van de pinken en ook om kort na het kalven snel te herstarten.

Karakter is een woord dat veel valt in gesprek met Ard Jan Steunenberg. De vleesveehouder uit het stadse Rijssen steekt veel tijd in het mak krijgen van zijn limousins. Hoewel hij geen eigen stal heeft, breidde hij zijn veestapel uit tot inmiddels 38 dieren.

Fokwaarden helpen om op rationele basis dieren te selecteren. Toch is het verschil in fokwaarden tussen kalveren die naar het mesthok verdwijnen en kalveren die opgefokt worden, met 13 punten NVI gering. Nieuwe initiatieven om via genoomfokwaarden te selecteren kunnen dat wellicht snel veranderen.

Het Zeeuwse fokbedrijf Ut de Groe speelt zich al enkele jaren in de kijker. Met een zeer beperkt aantal dieren fokken Marc Versprille en Jeannette Harms kampioenen en voor exterieur heel hoog gepunte fokdieren. Deelname aan keuringen is hun lust en hun leven. Ki BBG heeft een optie genomen op stier Pablo ut de Groe

Een titel bij rood en een titel bij zwart. De fokdag in Oostmalle was wederom succesvol voor Patrick, Linda en Jo Van Hoof met hun kroonjuweel Braxtondochter Roxcheyenne des Marbo. Bij roodbont pakte Bie Ceursters uit Merksplas twee keer de zege.

Met een nieuwe vleesveestal mikt Filip Ally uit het West-Vlaamse Kanegem op groei van zijn vleesveestapel en zo veel mogelijk alleen werken. Door nadrukkelijk te letten op vleeskwaliteit en slachteigenschappen fokt hij richting een gewild eindproduct.

Het fokbedrijf Van Terbeck behaalde met de indrukwekkende Karaat de nationale titel bij de jonge vaarzen. In de finale bij de oudere vaarzen en bij de zoogstellen was de hoofdrol weggelegd voor Ricaneuse de Fooz. De aanduiding van kampioenskoe Mondaine de Roupage was niet onbevlekt.

Zo moeder, zo dochter. Op de Midsummer Dairy Show trad de ene na de andere deelneemster met een titel in de voetsporen van haar moeder. De hoofdrol bij roodbont was voor regerend NRM-kampioene Barendonk Brasilera 12.

In een serie artikelen worden de mogelijkheden van registratiesystemen voor zeldzame rassen toegelicht. In dit artikel komt het IRISsysteem van veeverbeteringsorganisatie CRV aan de orde, dat in combinatie met het CRV-managementpakket VeeManager ook mogelijkheden biedt voor de zeldzame runderrassen.

Het was een jaar van records, zo laten de mpr-cijfers van CRV zien. Niet eerder telde een Nederlands melkveebedrijf zo veel koeien, was het totaal aantal mpr-koeien zo hoog en lag het rollend jaargemiddelde zo hoog.

De heidekoe verdween halverwege de vorige eeuw uit het Nederlandse landschap. Het ras was hier uitgestorven. In Denemarken was van dit veeslag nog wel een aantal dieren te vinden. In 2007 werden heidekoeien door de bioloog van Het Geldersch Landschap en Kastelen aangekocht. Met deze dieren zette hij een eigen fokprogramma op. De nakomelingen van deze heidekoeien vonden hun weg naar andere heidegebieden.

Nederland lijkt hard op weg naar een totaal van 1,6 miljoen eerste inseminaties. Dat aantal is sinds de millenniumwisseling niet meer gehaald. Vooral de Belgisch witblauwen hebben bijgedragen aan die groei op de inseminatiemarkt.

In een geheel nieuwe opzet werd fokveedag Twente onder de naam After Summer Show getransformeerd tot sfeervolle avondkeuring. Licht, geluid en vooral ook heel fraaie kampioenen maakten de eerste editie tot een nieuwe standaard.

Van de belangrijkste stieren bij zwartbont, roodbont, mrij en de overige rassen publiceert Veeteelt opnieuw de 305 dagenproducties van hun dochters. Het gaat om de ruwe, niet-gecorrigeerde lijsten. Als ondergrens geldt een minimum van 75 lijsten.

Met Jarco en Jantje van de Zuivelhoeve was Henk Dunnink heel succesvol op de afgelopen nationale keuring. Een kijkje in zijn kleine, maar fijne stal. ‘Ik hou van lang, groot en luxe. Die koeien zorgen voor de kilo’s aan de slachthaak.’
