Even though genetic resources represent a fundamental reservoir of options to achieve sustainable development goals in a changing world, they are overlooked in the policy agenda and severely threatened. The conservation of genetic resources relies on complementary in situ and ex situ approaches appropriately designed for each type of organism. Environmental and socioeconomic changes raise new challenges and opportunities for sustainable use and conservation of genetic resources. Aiming at a more integrated and adaptive approach, European scientists and genetic resources managers with long experience in the agricultural crop, animal and forestry domains joined their expertise to address three critical challenges: (1) how to adapt genetic resources conservation strategies to climate change, (2) how to promote in situ conservation strategies and (3) how can genetic resources conservation contribute to and benefit from agroecological systems. We present here 31 evidence-based statements and 88 key recommendations elaborated around these questions for policymakers, conservation actors and the scientific community. We anticipate that stakeholders in other genetic resources domains and biodiversity conservation actors across the globe will have interest in these crosscutting and multi-actor recommendations, which support several biodiversity conservation policies and practices.

The objectives of this theoretical review, which simultaneously articulates applied research, are the following: a-communicate a theoretical and practical synthesis of Territorial Justice in Latin America, b-introduce the knowledge of some perspectives of Bioethics related to Territorial Justice, and c-analyze and recognize some aspects in common between Territorial Justice and Bioethics with the purpose of transforming dialogues of knowledge into dialogues of doing. With contributions from teachers in transformation theories and in Participatory-Action-Research, as well as territorial and environmental theories, the pollination of this group of more than 1500 people for almostfour decades emphasizes methods, techniques and concrete useful devices; so that we can make our utopias come true and thus walk through new ones, always from a rigorous, popular, emerging and transforming science. This publication has the goal of inviting to solidify the bridges between these two disciplines–one in development, the other more developed–so that together they can accompany in the coming decades the concrete work of a number of other sciences that produce invaluable contributions to knowledge, and a more respectful human evolution of the Planet and its beings. The receptivity in the work from other disciplines will be more than favorable if from the Territorial Justice and Bioethics we manage to land theoretical, axiological and epistemological principles, with specific scientific devices, methods and techniques to achieve it. In this short text we communicate and propose clues for it.

Marginal and peripheral populations are important for biodiversity conservation. Their original situation in a species’ geographic and ecological space often confers them genetic diversity and traits of high adaptive value. Yet theoretical hypotheses related to marginality are difficult to test because of confounding factors that influence marginality, namely environment, geography, and history. There is an urgent need to develop metrics to disentangle these confounding factors. We designed nine quantitative indices of marginality and peripherality that define where margins lie within species distributions, from a geographical, an environmental and a historical perspective. Using the distribution maps of eight European forest tree species, we assessed whether these indices were idiosyncratic or whether they conveyed redundant information. Using a database on marginal and peripheral populations based on expert knowledge, we assessed the capacity of the indices to predict the marginality status of a population. There was no consistent pattern of correlation between indices across species, confirming that the indices conveyed different information related to the specific geometry of the species distributions. Contrasting with this heterogeneity of correlation patterns across species, the relative importance of the indices to predict the marginality status of populations was consistent across species. However, there was still a significant country effect in the marginality status, showing a variation in expert opinion of marginality vis-á-vis the species distribution. The marginality indices that we developed are entirely based on distribution maps and can be used for any species. They pave the way for testing hypotheses related to marginality and peripherality, with important implications in quantitative ecology, genetics, and biodiversity conservation.

An EU INFRAIA-02-2020: Integrating Activities for Starting Communities project MINKE (Metrology for Integrated marine maNagement and Knowledge-transfer nEtwork https://minke.eu) brings European marine science and metrology Research Infrastructures together to identify synergies and create an innovative approach to Quality Assurance of oceanographic data. Quality depends both on the accuracy (that can be provided through the metrology component) and the completeness of the data sets. The collaboration between different Marine Research Infrastructures (RIs) places a fundamental role on assuring the completeness of the datasets, particularly at global scales. Un viatge des de Catalunya fins a Gàmbia descobrint les relacions des de la nostra taula fins als fluxos migratoris

We investigated sediments from three different depositional environments along the northern Argentine continental margin to assess the main processes controlling sediment deposition since the last glacial period. Further, we evaluated how different depositional conditions affect (bio)geochemical processes within sediments. Sediment cores were collected during expedition SO260 in 2018[1]. Two sites are located at ~1100 m water depth north and south of the Mar del Plata Canyon (N- and S-Middle Slope Site). Another site is situated at the lower continental slope at 3600 m water depth (Lower Slope Site). Reliable age constraints of sediments deposited during the last glaciation at the Argentine margin are difficult to obtain due limited amounts of carbonate. We overcame this issue by combining radio-isotope analyses (14C,230Thex) with sedimentological, geochemical and magnetic data demonstrating that all sites experienced distinct changes over time. Both, N- and S-Middle Slope Sites, record at least the last 30 ka. The S-Middle Slope Site is dominated by continuously organic carbon-starved and winnowed sandy deposits, which according to geochemical and magnetic data leads to insignificant sulfate reduction and sulfidation of iron (oxyhydr)oxides. Glacial sedimentation rates at the Middle Slope increase northwards suggesting a decrease in bottom-current strength. The N-Middle Slope Site records a transition from the last glacial period, dominated by organic carbon-starved sands, to the early deglacial period when mainly silty and organic carbon-rich sediments were deposited between 14-15 ka BP. Concurrently, glacial sedimentation rates of ~50 cm/ka significantly increased to 120 cm/ka. We propose that this high sedimentation rate relates to lateral sediment re-deposition by current-driven focusing as response to sea level rise. Wind speed retrieval at sea surface is of primary importance for scientific and operational applications. Besides weather models, in-situ measurements and remote sensing technologies, especially satellite sensors, provide complementary means to monitor wind speed. As sea surface winds produce sounds that propagate underwater, underwater acoustics recordings can also deliver fine-grained wind-related information. Whereas model-driven schemes, especially data assimilation approaches, are the state-of-the-art schemes to address inverse problems in geoscience, machine learning techniques become more and more appealing to fully exploit the potential of observation datasets. Here, we introduce a deep learning approach for the retrieval of wind speed time series from underwater acoustics possibly complemented by other data sources such as weather model reanalyses. Our approach bridges data assimilation and learning-based frameworks to benefit both from prior physical knowledge and computational efficiency. Numerical experiments on real data demonstrate that we outperform the state-of-the-art data-driven methods with a relative gain up to 16% in terms of RMSE. Interestingly, these results support the relevance of the time dynamics of underwater acoustic data to better inform the time evolution of wind speed. They also show that multimodal data, here underwater acoustics data combined with ECMWF reanalysis data, may further improve the reconstruction performance, including the robustness with respect to missing underwater acoustics data., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Manufacturers of automated systems and their components have been allocating an enormous amount of time and effort in R&D activities, which led to the availability of prototypes demonstrating new capabilities as well as the introduction of such systems to the market within different domains. Manufacturers need to make sure that the systems function in the intended way and according to specifications. This is not a trivial task as system complexity rises dramatically the more integrated and interconnected these systems become with the addition of automated functionality and features to them. This effort translates into an overhead on the V&V (verification and validation) process making it time-consuming and costly. In this paper, we present VALU3S, an ECSEL JU (joint undertaking) project that aims to evaluate the state-of-the-art V&V methods and tools, and design a multi-domain framework to create a clear structure around the components and elements needed to conduct the V&V process. The main expected benefit of the framework is to reduce time and cost needed to verify and validate automated systems with respect to safety, cyber-security, and privacy requirements. This is done through identification and classification of evaluation methods, tools, environments and concepts for V&V of automated systems with respect to the mentioned requirements. VALU3S will provide guidelines to the V&V community including engineers and researchers on how the V&V of automated systems could be improved considering the cost, time and effort of conducting V&V processes. To this end, VALU3S brings together a consortium with partners from 10 different countries, amounting to a mix of 25 industrial partners, 6 leading research institutes, and 10 universities to reach the project goal., VALU3S (verification and validation of automated systems' safety and security)

[EN] The Cenozoic seismic stratigraphy of the northern Argentine continental slope, off Bahia Blanca is characterized by five major seismic boundaries, B1 to B5 (from oldest to youngest) bounding six units: I (Eocene), II (Oligocene to early Miocene), III (middle Miocene), IV (late Miocene), V (Pliocene), and VI (Quaternary). These units are make-up of mass-flow deposits, (hemi)pelagites or low-density flows, contourite drifts and moats, sediment waves, and canyon deposits. The depositional architecture of deposits show the progressive decreases of mass-flow deposits and (hemi)pelagites or low-density flows from Eocene to middle Miocene, and the dominance of contourites through time, which is accompanied by an upslope lateral relocation of their deposits and features becoming ubiquitous during the late Miocene to Quaternary. The depositional stratigraphic architecture allow us to divide the sedimentary history into three major periods, Eocene to Early Miocene; Middle Miocene; and Late Miocene to Recent, governed by palaeoceanographic changes in the Southern Component Deep Water (SCDW). These changes are related to palaeogeodynamic, regionally related to variations in the Andean orogeny and remotely related to the opening stages of the Drake Passage (Antarctica) and closure of the Central American Seaway, [ES] La estratigrafía sísmica cenozoica del talud continental norte argentino, frente a Bahía Blanca, comprende cinco discontinuidades estratigráficas principales, B1 a B5 (de la más antigua a la más joven) que limita seis unidades: I (Eoceno), II (Oligoceno a Mioceno temprano), III (Mioceno medio), IV (Mioceno tardío), V (Plioceno) y VI (Cuaternario). Estas unidades están formadas por depósitos de flujo en masa, (hemi)pelagitas o flujos de baja densidad, crestas y surcos contorníticos, ondas de sedimento y depósitos de cañón. La arquitectura deposicional muestra una disminución progresiva de los depósitos de flujo en masa y (hemi)pelagitas o flujos de baja densidad, del Eoceno al Mioceno medio, y un predominio de las contornitas que está acompañada por la extensión de las mismas talud arriba, del Mioceno tardío al Cuaternario. Esta arquitectura deposicio- nal permite dividir la historia sedimentaria cenozoica en tres períodos principales: Eoceno al Mioceno temprano; Mioceno medio; y Mioceno tardío a reciente. [EN] The sedimentary record of the contourite drift associated with the Djibouti Ville seamount (Alboran Sea, western Mediterranean) has been studied to reconstruct the source areas of the aeolian dust from Late Pleistocene to Holocene. Three end-member grain-size distributions address for different aeolian populations (coarse EM1, silty EM2 and fine EM3). For these particles, the most probable sour-ce areas are the Saharan sedimentary basins and deserts as well as the cratonic basins of the Sahara-Sahel corridor, whose prevalence in the core record changes by the MIS 5 to MIS 4 transition. Some punctual sediment inputs from the seamount have been recognized during sea-level low-stand but there is no evidence for fluvial supply in the drift deposits, [ES] Se ha realizado el estudio del registro sedimentario del drift con-tornítico asociado al monte submarino Villa de Djibouti (mar de Al-borán, Mediterráneo occidental) con el fin de reconstruir las áreas fuente de polvo eólico desde el Pleistoceno Superior al Holoceno. Se han podido diferenciar tres end-members (EM1 grueso, EM2 limoso y EM3 fino) que caracterizan la distribución granulométrica de las principales poblaciones de polvo eólico. Las áreas fuente más pro-bables de estas partículas son las cuencas sedimentarias y los de-siertos, así como las cuencas cratónicas del corredor Sahara-Sahel, cuya prevalencia en el registro sedimentario experimenta un cambio durante la transición de MIS 5 a MIS 4. Se han reconocido algunos aportes puntuales del monte coincidiendo con periodos de bajada del nivel del mar, pero no se han encontrado evidencias de aportes fluviales en los depósitos contorníticos

The techno-economic feasibility of three biogas utilization processes was assessed through computer simulations on commercial process simulator Aspen HYSYS: HPC (biogas to methanol), BioCH4 (biogas to biomethane) and CHP (biogas to heat & electricity). The last two processes are already used commercially with the aid of subsidy policies. The economic analysis indicates that, without these policies, none of these attain economic self-sustainability due to high overall manufacturing costs. The estimated minimum support cost (MSCs) were 108, 62 and 109 €/MWh for the HPC, BioCH4 and CHP processes, respectively. The model could explain currently practised government subsidies in Italy and Germany. It was seen that the newly proposed HPC process is economically comparable to the traditional CHP process. Therefore, the HPC process is a possible alternative to biogas usage. A support policy was proposed: 50, 66, 158 and 148 €/MWh for available heat, methane, electricity and methanol (respectively); the proposed energy policy results in a 10% OpEx rate of return for any of the processes, thus avoiding a disparity in the production of different products.

Spray drying unit operation is generally used for separating and drying a solid that cannot be mechanically dried because cannot be exposed to high-temperature atmospheres for long periods. For this reason, spray dryers are related to heat-sensitive products like food or drugs but can be also used for natural extract encapsulation in order to increase their thermal stability. In this work, this last aspect was investigated and a model of co-current spray-drying, was developed and validated. This model is based on mass, energy and momentum balances and take into account of the distribution of the particle size. An experimental campaign was performed using a laboratory scale spray dryer (Büchi Mini Spray Dryer B-290, Switzerland) to validate the model. Maltodextrin and cyclodextrin were used as carrier to encapsulate grape skin and citrus extracts respectively. Different tests were done varying the operating condition of the spray dryer like the inlet air temperature (from 120°C to 180°C) and the mass ratio between carrier and natural extract. Simulation results and experimental data showed a good agreement in terms of mass yield and outlet temperature, while the outlet moisture content show slightly difference e needs to be further investigated.

The aim of this work is to evaluate the potential application of a new sustainable technology, called Acid Gas to Syngas, on steam reforming process in order to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions. Indeed, steam reforming has high emissions of carbon dioxide, at almost 7 kg of carbon dioxide per 1 kg of hydrogen produced. The key idea of the new technology is to convert carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide coming from natural gas desulfurization into additional hydrogen. Coupling different software, i.e. Aspen HYSYS and MATLAB, a complete plant model, able to manage the recycle of unconverted acid gases, has been developed. The importance of introduced innovations is highlighted and a comparison between the old process and the new one with Acid Gas to Syngas technology is built up. With Acid Gas to Syngas technology the natural gas consumption and carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced up to 3%

Cephalopod culture is expected to increase in the near future and sperm cryopreservation would be a valuable tool to guarantee sperm availability throughout the year and to improve artificial insemination programs. We have studied the tolerance of spermatophores from the oceanic squid Illex coindetii to several cryoprotectants, in two toxicity experiments and a cryopreservation test. Five permeating cryoprotectants were tested: Dimethyl sulfoxide (Me2SO), methanol, glycerol, propylene glycol and ethylene glycol. In the first experiment, spermatophores were exposed to the five cryoprotectants at 5% (v/v) and 15% (v/v) at 4 °C for 5 min. In the second experiment, spermatophores were exposed to the cryoprotectants at 15% using different exposure times: 5, 15 and 30 min. In a third experiment, we tested two cryopreservation protocols: LN2 vapor or −80 °C freezer, using a 15% cryoprotectant and 15 or 30 min of exposure. Viability and mitochondrial activity were assessed using Mitotracker deep red, YOPRO1 and Hoechst 33342, by flow cytometry. Spermatozoa in this species remain viable after cryoprotectant exposure but their quality decreased considerably after cryopreservation, only 5–10% of spermatozoa being motile. Flow cytometry demonstrated that Me2SO may be the most appropriate cryoprotectant for I. coindetii spermatozoa, and shows a first approach on cephalopod sperm cryopreservation, opening new possibilities for the research and culture of this group of molluscs.

The marine domain (ICOS-Oceans) currently consists of 11 Ship of Opportunity lines (SOOP - Ship of Opportunity Program) and 10 Fixed Ocean Stations (FOSs) spread across European waters, including the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans and the Barents, North, Baltic, and Mediterranean Seas. The stations operate in a harmonized and standardized way based on community-proven protocols and methods for ocean GHG observations, improving operational conformity as well as quality control and assurance of the data. This enables the network to focus on long term research into the marine carbon cycle and the anthropogenic carbon sink, while preparing the network to include other GHG fluxes. ICOS data are processed on a near real-time basis and will be published on the ICOS Carbon Portal (CP), allowing monthly estimates of CO2 air-sea exchange to be quantified for European waters. ICOS establishes transparent operational data management routines following the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) guiding principles allowing amongst others reproducibility, interoperability, and traceability. The Mediterranean community represented in this paper is the result of more than 30 years of EU and nationally funded coordination, which has led to key contributions in science concepts and operational initiatives. Together with the establishment of operational services, the community has coordinated with universities, research centers, research infrastructures and private companies to implement advanced multi-platform and integrated observing and forecasting systems that facilitate the advancement of operational services, scientific achievements and mission-oriented innovation. Thus, the community can respond to societal challenges and stakeholders needs, developing a variety of fit-for-purpose services such as the Copernicus Marine Service. The combination of state-of-the-art observations and forecasting provides new opportunities for downstream services in response to the needs of the heavily populated Mediterranean coastal areas and to climate change. The challenge over the next decade is to sustain ocean observations within the research community, to monitor the variability at small scales, e.g., the mesoscale/submesoscale, to resolve the sub-basin/seasonal and inter-annual variability in the circulation, and thus establish the decadal variability, understand and correct the model-associated biases and to enhance model-data integration and ensemble forecasting for uncertainty estimation. Better knowledge and understanding of the level of Mediterranean variability will enable a subsequent evaluation of the impacts and mitigation of the effect of human activities and climate change on the biodiversity and the ecosystem, which will support environmental assessments and decisions. A first and foremost requirement for such collaborative ocean observing is the need to follow well-defined and reproducible methods across activities: from strategies for structuring observing systems, sensor deployment and usage, and the generation of data and information products, to ethical and governance aspects when executing ocean observing. To meet the urgent, planet-wide challenges we face, methods across all aspects of ocean observing should be broadly adopted by the ocean community and, where appropriate, should evolve into "Ocean Best Practices." While many groups have created best practices, they are scattered across the Web or buried in local repositories and many have yet to be digitized. To reduce this fragmentation, we introduce a new open access, permanent, digital repository of best practices documentation (oceanbestpractices.org ) that is part of the Ocean Best Practices System (OBPS). The new OBPS provides an opportunity space for the centralized and coordinated improvement of ocean observing methods. The OBPS repository employs user-friendly software to significantly improve discovery and access to methods. The software includes advanced semantic technologies for search capabilities to enhance repository operations. In addition to the repository, the OBPS also includes a peer reviewed journal research topic, a forum for community discussion and a training activity for use of best practices. The Mediterranean community represented in this paper is the result of more than 30 years of EU and nationally funded coordination, which has led to key contributions in science concepts and operational initiatives. Together with the establishment of operational services, the community has coordinated with universities, research centers, research infrastructures and private companies to implement advanced multi-platform and integrated observing and forecasting systems that facilitate the advancement of operational services, scientific achievements and mission-oriented innovation. Thus, the community can respond to societal challenges and stakeholders needs, developing a variety of fit-for-purpose services such as the Copernicus Marine Service. The combination of state-of-the-art observations and forecasting provides new opportunities for downstream services in response to the needs of the heavily populated Mediterranean coastal areas and to climate change. The challenge over the next decade is to sustain ocean observations within the research community, to monitor the variability at small scales, e.g., the mesoscale/submesoscale, to resolve the sub-basin/seasonal and inter-annual variability in the circulation, and thus establish the decadal variability, understand and correct the model-associated biases and to enhance model-data integration and ensemble forecasting for uncertainty estimation. Better knowledge and understanding of the level of Mediterranean variability will enable a subsequent evaluation of the impacts and mitigation of the effect of human activities and climate change on the biodiversity and the ecosystem, which will support environmental assessments and decisions. The oceans play a key role in global issues such as climate change, food security, and human health. Given their vast dimensions and internal complexity, efficient monitoring and predicting of the planet's ocean must be a collaborative effort of both regional and global scale. A first and foremost requirement for such collaborative ocean observing is the need to follow well-defined and reproducible methods across activities: from strategies for structuring observing systems, sensor deployment and usage, and the generation of data and information products, to ethical and governance aspects when executing ocean observing. To meet the urgent, planet-wide challenges we face, methods across all aspects of ocean observing should be broadly adopted by the ocean community and, where appropriate, should evolve into "Ocean Best Practices." While many groups have created best practices, they are scattered across the Web or buried in local repositories and many have yet to be digitized. To reduce this fragmentation, we introduce a new open access, permanent, digital repository of best practices documentation (oceanbestpractices.org ) that is part of the Ocean Best Practices System (OBPS). The new OBPS provides an opportunity space for the centralized and coordinated improvement of ocean observing methods. The OBPS repository employs user-friendly software to significantly improve discovery and access to methods. The software includes advanced semantic technologies for search capabilities to enhance repository operations. In addition to the repository, the OBPS also includes a peer reviewed journal research topic, a forum for community discussion and a training activity for use of best practices.
