Summary paragraph Plankton are essential in marine ecosystems. However, our knowledge of overall community structure is sparse due to inconsistent sampling across their very large organismal size range. Here we use diverse imaging methods to establish complete plankton inventories of organisms spanning five orders of magnitude in size. Plankton community size and trophic structure variation validate a long-held theoretical link between organism size-spectra and ecosystem trophic structures. We found that predator/grazer biomass and biovolume unexpectedly exceed that of primary producers at most (55%) locations, likely due to our better quantification of gelatinous organisms. Bottom- heavy ecosystems (the norm on land) appear to be rare in the ocean. Collectively, gelatinous organisms represent 30% of the total biovolume (8-9% of carbon) of marine plankton communities from tropical to polar ecosystems. Communities can be split into three extreme typologies: diatom/copepod-dominated in eutrophic blooms, rhizarian/chaetognath-dominated in oligotrophic tropical oceans, and gelatinous-dominated elsewhere. While plankton taxonomic composition changes with latitude, functional and trophic structures mostly depend on the amount of prey available for each trophic level. Given future projections of oligotrophication of marine ecosystems, our findings suggest that rhizarian and gelatinous organisms will increasingly dominate the apex position of planktonic ecosystems, leading to significant changes in the ocean’s carbon cycle.

Background: Structural and behavioral interventions to manage work-related stress are effective in employees. Nonetheless, they have been implemented insufficiently, particularly in micro- and small-sized enterprises (MSE). Main barriers include a lack of knowledge and limited resources, which could potentially be overcome with simplified web-based alternatives for occupational stress prevention. However, there is a lack of implementation research about web-based prevention in realistic settings of MSE.Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the implementation process and success of an integrated web-based platform for occupational stress prevention (“System P”) and to identify potential barriers for its uptake and use in MSE in Germany. Methods: This study with a mixed-methods approach investigates eight process-related outcomes in a quantitative part I (adoption, reach, penetration, fidelity/dose, costs, acceptability) and a qualitative part II (acceptability, appropriateness and feasibility). Part I has a pre-post design with two measurements (6 months apart) with 98 individual participants and part II consists of 12 semi-structured interviews with managers and intercorporate stakeholders.Results: Part I revealed shortcomings in the implementation process. Adoption/Reach: Despite extensive marketing efforts, less than 1% of the contacted MSE responded to the offer of System P. A total of 40 MSE registered, 24 of which, characterized by good psychosocial safety climate, adopted System P. Penetration: Within these 24 MSE, 15% of the employees used the system. Fidelity/Dose: 11 MSE started a psychosocial risk-assessment (PRA), and no MSE finished it. The stress-management training (SMT) was started by 25 users and completed by 8. The sensitivity and responsiveness of living cells to environmental changes are enabled by dynamic protein structures, inspiring efforts to construct artificial supramolecular protein assemblies. However, despite their sophisticated structures, designed protein assemblies have yet to be incorporated into macroscale devices for real-life applications. We report a 2D crystalline protein assembly of C98/E57/E66L-rhamnulose-1-phosphate aldolase (CEERhuA) that selectively blocks or passes molecular species when exposed to a chemical trigger. CEERhuA crystals are engineered via cobalt(II) coordination bonds to undergo a coherent conformational change from a closed state (pore dimensions <1 nm) to an ajar state (pore dimensions ~4 nm) when exposed to an HCN(g) trigger. When layered onto a mesoporous silicon (pSi) photonic crystal optical sensor configured to detect HCN(g), the 2D CEERhuA crystal layer effectively blocks interferents that would otherwise result in a false positive signal. The 2D CEERhuA crystal layer opens in selective response to low-ppm levels of HCN(g), allowing analyte penetration into the pSi sensor layer for detection. These findings illustrate that designed protein assemblies can function as dynamic components of solid-state devices in non-aqueous environments.

In marine ecosystems, most physiological, ecological, or physical processes are size dependent. These include metabolic rates, the uptake of carbon and other nutrients, swimming and sinking velocities, and trophic interactions, which eventually determine the stocks of commercial species, as well as biogeochemical cycles and carbon sequestration. As such, broad-scale observations of plankton size distribution are important indicators of the general functioning and state of pelagic ecosystems under anthropogenic pressures. Here, we present the first global datasets of the Pelagic Size Structure database (PSSdb), generated from plankton imaging devices. This release includes the bulk particle normalized biovolume size spectrum (NBSS) and the bulk particle size distribution (PSD), along with their related parameters (slope, intercept, and R2) measured within the epipelagic layer (0–200 m) by three imaging sensors: the Imaging FlowCytobot (IFCB), the Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP), and benchtop scanners. Collectively, these instruments effectively image organisms and detrital material in the 7–10 000 µm size range. A total of 92 472 IFCB samples, 3068 UVP profiles, and 2411 scans passed our quality control and were standardized to produce consistent instrument-specific size spectra averaged to 1° × 1° latitude and longitude and by year and month. Our instrument-specific datasets span most major ocean basins, except for the IFCB datasets we have ingested, which were exclusively collected in northern latitudes, and cover decadal time periods (2013–2022 for IFCB, 2008–2021 for UVP, and 1996–2022 for scanners), allowing for a further assessment of the pelagic size spectrum in space and time. Scholars have suggested that autonomy can lead to better entrepreneurial team performance. Yet, there are different types of autonomy, and they come at a cost. We shed light on whether two fundamental organizational design choices—granting teams autonomy to (1) choose project ideas to work on and (2) choose team members to work with—affect performance. We run a field experiment involving 939 students in a lean startup entrepreneurship course over 11 weeks. The aim is to disentangle the separate and joint effects of granting autonomy over choosing teams and choosing ideas compared with a baseline treatment with preassigned ideas and team members. We find that teams with autonomy over choosing either ideas or team members outperform teams in the baseline treatment as measured by pitch deck performance. The effect of choosing ideas is significantly stronger than the effect of choosing teams. However, the performance gains vanish for teams that are granted full autonomy over choosing both ideas and teams. This suggests the two forms of autonomy are substitutes. Causal mediation analysis reveals that the main effects of choosing ideas or teams can be partly explained by a better match of ideas with team members’ interests and prior network contacts among team members, respectively. Although homophily and lack of team diversity cannot explain the performance drop among teams with full autonomy, our results suggest that self-selected teams fall prey to overconfidence and complacency too early to fully exploit the potential of their chosen idea. We discuss the implications of these findings for research on organizational design, autonomy, and innovation.

BackgroundHydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic, flammable, and colorless gas. Hydrogen sulfide has been identified as a potential terrorist chemical threat agent in mass-casualty events. Our previous studies showed that cobinamide, a vitamin B12 analog, effectively reverses the toxicity from hydrogen sulfide poisoning. In this study, we investigate the effectiveness of intratracheally administered cobinamide in treating a lethal dose hydrogen sulfide gas inhalation and compare its performance to saline control administration.MethodsA total of 53 pathogen-free New Zealand White rabbits were used for this study. Four groups were compared: (i) received no saline solution or drug intratracheally (n = 15), (ii) slow drip saline intratracheally (n = 15), (iii) fast drip saline intratracheally (n = 15), and (iv) slow drip cobinamide intratracheally (n = 8). Blood pressure was continuously monitored, and deoxy- and oxyhemoglobin concentration changes were monitored in real-time in vivo using continuous wave near-infrared spectroscopy.ResultsThe mean (± standard deviation) weight for all animals (n = 53) was 3.87 ± 0.10 kg. The survival rates of the slow cobinamide and the fast saline groups were 75 percent and 60 percent, respectively, while the survival rates in the slow saline and control groups were 26.7 percent and 20 percent, respectively. A log-rank (Mantel-Cox) test showed that survival in fast saline and slow cobinamide groups were significantly greater than those of no saline control and slow saline groups (P < 0.05). The slow and no saline control groups were not significantly different (P = 0.59). The slow cobinamide group did significantly better than the slow saline group (P = 0.021).DiscussionThe ability to use intratracheal cobinamide as an antidote to hydrogen sulfide poisoning is a novel approach to mass-casualty care. The major limitations of this study are that it was conducted in a single species at a single inhaled hydrogen sulfide concentration.

ContextRotenone is a toxic chemical found in various plants, including some used as food. Rotenone poisoning can be fatal and there is no antidote. Mechanistically, rotenone inhibits mitochondrial complex I, leading to reduced ATP production, compensatory glycolytic upregulation and secondary lactate production, and oxidative stress. Our literature review examined acute rotenone poisoning in humans, including exposure scenarios, clinical presentations, and treatments.MethodsWe searched five databases for relevant literature from database inception through the search date: July 12, 2022, pairing controlled vocabulary and keywords for "rotenone" with terms relating to human exposures and outcomes, such as "ingestion," "exposure," and "poisoning." We included all peer-reviewed reports found using the search terms where the full English text was available. Data abstracted included the number, age, weight, and sex of the exposed person(s), country where exposure happened, exposure scenario, ingestion context, estimated dose, clinical features, whether hospitalization occurred, treatments, and outcomes.ResultsAfter removing non-qualifying sources from 2,631 publications, we identified 11 case reports describing 18 victims, 15 of whom were hospitalized and five died. Most cases occurred in private quarters where victims unknowingly consumed rotenone-containing plants. Vomiting and metabolic acidosis occurred most commonly. Some patients exhibited impaired cardiopulmonary function. Supportive treatment addressed symptoms and included gastric lavage and/or activated charcoal to remove rotenone from the stomach, vasopressors for hypotension, mechanical ventilation for respiratory insufficiency, and sodium bicarbonate for acidosis. Some patients received N-acetylcysteine to counter oxidative stress.ConclusionsRotenone poisoning, though rare, can be fatal. Recent discoveries of transiting giant exoplanets around M-dwarf stars (GEMS), aided by the all-sky coverage of TESS, are starting to stretch theories of planet formation through the core-accretion scenario. Recent upper limits on their occurrence suggest that they decrease with lower stellar masses, with fewer GEMS around lower-mass stars compared to solar-type. In this paper, we discuss existing GEMS both through confirmed planets, as well as protoplanetary disk observations, and a combination of tests to reconcile these with theoretical predictions. We then introduce the \textit{Searching for GEMS} survey, where we utilize multi-dimensional nonparameteric statistics to simulate hypothetical survey scenarios to predict the required sample size of transiting GEMS with mass measurements to robustly compare their bulk-density with canonical hot-Jupiters orbiting FGK stars. Our Monte-Carlo simulations predict that a robust comparison requires about 40 transiting GEMS (compared to the existing sample of $\sim$ 15) with 5-$\sigma$ mass measurements. Furthermore, we discuss the limitations of existing occurrence estimates for GEMS, and provide a brief description of our planned systematic search to improve the occurrence rate estimates for GEMS., Comment: 16 pages + references, including 7 figures. Background: Continued phenotyping and ongoing surveillance are important in current and future monitoring of emerging SARS-CoV-2 lineages. Herein we developed pragmatic strategies to track the emergence, spread and phenotype of SARS-CoV-2 variants in Australia in an era of decreasing diagnostic PCR testing and focused cohort-based studies. This was aligned to longitudinal studies that span 4 years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Throughout 2023, we partnered with diagnostic pathology providers and pathogen genomics teams to identify relevant emerging or circulating variants in the New South Wales (NSW) community. We monitored emerging variants through viral culture, growth algorithms, neutralization responses and change entry requirements defined by ACE2 and TMPRSS2 receptor use. To frame this in the context of the pandemic stage, we continued to longitudinally track neutralisation responses at the population level using using sequential batches of pooled Intravenous Immunoglobulins (IVIG) derived from in excess of 700,000 donations. Findings: In antibodies derived from recent individual donations and thousands of donations pooled in IVIGs, we observed continued neutralization across prior and emerging variants with EG.5.1, HV.1, XCT and JN.1 ranked as the most evasive SARS-CoV-2 variants. Changes in the type I antibody site at Spike positions 452, 455 and 456 were associated with lowered neutralization responses in XBB lineages. In longitudinal tracking of population immunity spanning three years, we observed continued maturation of neutralization breadth to all SARS-CoV-2 variants over time. Whilst neutralization responses initially displayed high levels of imprinting towards Ancestral and early pre-Omicron lineages, this was slowly countered by increased cross reactive breadth to all variants. We present Stable Video 3D (SV3D) -- a latent video diffusion model for high-resolution, image-to-multi-view generation of orbital videos around a 3D object. Recent work on 3D generation propose techniques to adapt 2D generative models for novel view synthesis (NVS) and 3D optimization. However, these methods have several disadvantages due to either limited views or inconsistent NVS, thereby affecting the performance of 3D object generation. In this work, we propose SV3D that adapts image-to-video diffusion model for novel multi-view synthesis and 3D generation, thereby leveraging the generalization and multi-view consistency of the video models, while further adding explicit camera control for NVS. We also propose improved 3D optimization techniques to use SV3D and its NVS outputs for image-to-3D generation. Current 3D content generation approaches build on diffusion models that output RGB images. Modern graphics pipelines, however, require physically-based rendering (PBR) material properties. We propose to model the PBR image distribution directly, avoiding photometric inaccuracies in RGB generation and the inherent ambiguity in extracting PBR from RGB. Existing paradigms for cross-modal fine-tuning are not suited for PBR generation due to both a lack of data and the high dimensionality of the output modalities: we overcome both challenges by retaining a frozen RGB model and tightly linking a newly trained PBR model using a novel cross-network communication paradigm. As the base RGB model is fully frozen, the proposed method does not risk catastrophic forgetting during fine-tuning and remains compatible with techniques such as IPAdapter pretrained for the base RGB model. We present SHINOBI, an end-to-end framework for the reconstruction of shape, material, and illumination from object images captured with varying lighting, pose, and background. Inverse rendering of an object based on unconstrained image collections is a long-standing challenge in computer vision and graphics and requires a joint optimization over shape, radiance, and pose. We show that an implicit shape representation based on a multi-resolution hash encoding enables faster and robust shape reconstruction with joint camera alignment optimization that outperforms prior work. Further, to enable the editing of illumination and object reflectance (i.e. material) we jointly optimize BRDF and illumination together with the object's shape. Satellite remote sensing is a powerful tool to monitor the global dynamics of marine plankton. Previous research has focused on developing models to predict the size or taxonomic groups of phytoplankton. Here, we present an approach to identify community types from a global plankton network that includes phytoplankton and heterotrophic protists and to predict their biogeography using global satellite observations. Six plankton community types were identified from a co-occurrence network inferred using a novel rDNA 18 S V4 planetary-scale eukaryotic metabarcoding dataset. Machine learning techniques were then applied to construct a model that predicted these community types from satellite data. The model showed an overall 67% accuracy in the prediction of the community types. The prediction using 17 satellite-derived parameters showed better performance than that using only temperature and/or the concentration of chlorophyll a. The constructed model predicted the global spatiotemporal distribution of community types over 19 years. The predicted distributions exhibited strong seasonal changes in community types in the subarctic–subtropical boundary regions, which were consistent with previous field observations. The model also identified the long-term trends in the distribution of community types, which suggested responses to ocean warming.

The Arctic Ocean (AO) is being rapidly transformed by global warming, but its biodiversity remains understudied for many planktonic organisms, in particular for unicellular eukaryotes that play pivotal roles in marine food webs and biogeochemical cycles. The aim of this study was to characterize the biogeographic ranges of species that comprise the contemporary pool of unicellular eukaryotes in the AO as a first step toward understanding mechanisms that structure these communities and identifying potential target species for monitoring. Leveraging the Tara Oceans DNA metabarcoding data, we mapped the global distributions of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) found on Arctic shelves into five biogeographic categories, identified biogeographic indicators, and inferred the degree to which AO communities of unicellular eukaryotes share members with assemblages from lower latitudes. Arctic/Polar indicator OTUs, as well as some globally ubiquitous OTUs, dominated the detection and abundance of DNA reads in the Arctic samples. OTUs detected only in Arctic samples (Arctic-exclusives) showed restricted distribution with relatively low abundances, accounting for 10–16% of the total Arctic OTU pool. OTUs with high abundances in tropical and/or temperate latitudes (non-Polar indicators) were also found in the AO but mainly at its periphery. We observed a large change in community taxonomic composition across the Atlantic-Arctic continuum, supporting the idea that advection and environmental filtering are important processes that shape plankton assemblages in the AO. Altogether, this study highlights the connectivity between the AO and other oceans, and provides a framework for monitoring and assessing future changes in this vulnerable ecosystem.

This guide focuses on children and learning, while offering a picture of how technology can help to further educational goals. It includes anecdotes from the real world of the classroom which show how teachers are using technology to support and enhance students' literacy skills, creating opportunities for positive learning experiences, and helping students acquire confidence to use new tools to advance their own learning. Although young children are surrounded by technology, many educators are not entirely comfortable with these new resources, or wonder how best to integrate the tools of the Information Age into classroom practice in developmentally appropriate ways to reach a range of learners. This guidebook draws on both research and classroom practice to steer educators toward effective uses of technology to advance literacy. It is organized into these sections: Understanding Early Literacy; Understanding Technology's Role in Literacy; Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners; Considering Technology; Putting It All Together; and Conclusion. Appendixes contain a discussion of professional development teams and how they enhance learning and teaching; and a 28-item annotated bibliography of print and online resources. This booklet is part of a series designed to give educators useful information as they build a sense of community. The text focuses on violence in schools and what stakeholders can do to address this complex problem. It establishes the context for assessing violence and the potential danger to students and educators. It describes violence as learned behavior that can be unlearned and emphasizes the importance of early interventions that teach positive life skills. It offers a profile of violent versus nonviolent children and argues for the importance of positive role models, self-esteem, a sense of hope, and other conditions that can help students address problems in a nonviolent manner. Unfortunately, many children are subject to poverty, domestic violence, and other factors that increase their chances for using force to resolve difficulties. Some of the warning signs for future violent behavior include aggressive outbursts for no reason, an inability to follow directions, poor grades, insensitivity toward others' feelings, alcohol consumption, and poor school performance. To help potentially violent students, schools can use existing programs to identify existing problems. A heightened sense of community, discipline, effective classroom management, conflict-resolution skills, mentoring programs, weapons education, and parent participation can help violence prevention. This paper describes the Partners in Literacy Project developed by Phelps County, Nebraska R-6 School District. This project involves a partnership among the school, the parents, and students in promoting the literacy development of students. This rural school district serves a student body of 43 and consists of 6 staff members. The students are from 23 families whose livelihood is primarily dependent upon agriculture. The first year of the project focused on encouraging parents to read to their children or to establish family reading times. In the second year, the activities of the first year were combined with family writing activities. Educational research indicates positive results on achievement tests from students who come from print rich homes. Key characteristics in these homes include parental role models who are readers and parents who commit time on a daily basis to be involved in reading to and with their children. Parents were invited to an evening training session to discuss strategies for reading to their children and guidelines for developing family reading times. Fifteen of the 23 families voluntarily participated during the first year; participation was greatest among K-1 and 4-5 classes. Pre- and post-program attitude measures indicated the greatest change in developing positive attitudes toward reading were found in the grades with the greatest participation. Active voluntary participation by parents who spend more time reading with their children suggest the project's positive effect on parent participants. Four tables list specific benefits of the project and provide suggestions for managing family reading and writing activities. (LP)

Marine planktonic eukaryotes play critical roles in global biogeochemical cycles and climate. However, their poor representation in culture collections limits our understanding of the evolutionary history and genomic underpinnings of planktonic ecosystems. Here, we used 280 billion Tara Oceans metagenomic reads from polar, temperate, and tropical sunlit oceans to reconstruct and manually curate more than 700 abundant and widespread eukaryotic environmental genomes ranging from 10 Mbp to 1.3 Gbp. This genomic resource covers a wide range of poorly characterized eukaryotic lineages that complement long-standing contributions from culture collections while better representing plankton in the upper layer of the oceans. We performed the first, to our knowledge, comprehensive genome-wide functional classification of abundant unicellular eukaryotic plankton, revealing four major groups connecting distantly related lineages. Neither trophic modes of plankton nor its vertical evolutionary history could completely explain the functional repertoire convergence of major eukaryotic lineages that coexisted within oceanic currents for millions of years.

Of particular interest is the carbon associated with diatoms given their unequivocal ecological and biogeochemical roles. Satellite-based algorithms often rely on accessory pigment proxies to define diatom biomass, despite a lack of validation against independent diatom biomass measurements. We used imaging-in-flow cytometry to quantify diatom carbon in the western North Atlantic, and compared results to those obtained from accessory pigment-based approximations. Based on this analysis, we offer a new empirical formula to estimate diatom carbon concentrations from chlorophyll a. Additionally, we developed a neural network model in which we integrated chlorophyll a and environmental information to estimate diatom carbon distributions in the western North Atlantic. EXport Processes in the Ocean from Remote Sensing (EXPORTS) is a large-scale NASA-led and NSF co-funded field campaign that will provide critical information for quantifying the export and fate of upper ocean net primary production (NPP) using satellite information and state of the art technology.

Marine particles of different nature are found throughout the global ocean. The term "marine particles" describes detritus aggregates and fecal pellets as well as bacterioplankton, phytoplankton, zooplankton and nekton. Here, we present a global particle size distribution dataset obtained with several Underwater Vision Profiler 5 (UVP5) camera systems. Overall, within the 64 mu m to about 50 mm size range covered by the UVP5, detrital particles are the most abundant component of all marine particles; thus, measurements of the particle size distribution with the UVP5 can yield important information on detrital particle dynamics. During deployment, which is possible down to 6000 m depth, the UVP5 images a volume of about 1 L at a frequency of 6 to 20 Hz. Each image is segmented in real time, and size measurements of particles are automatically stored. All UVP5 units used to generate the dataset presented here were inter-calibrated using a UVP5 high-definition unit as reference. Our consistent particle size distribution dataset contains 8805 vertical profiles collected between 19 June 2008 and 23 November 2020. All major ocean basins, as well as the Mediterranean Sea and the Baltic Sea, were sampled. A total of 19 % of all profiles had a maximum sampling depth shallower than 200 dbar, 38 % sampled at least the upper 1000 dbar depth range and 11 % went down to at least 3000 dbar depth. First analysis of the particle size distribution dataset shows that particle abundance is found to be high at high latitudes and in coastal areas where surface productivity or continental inputs are elevated. The lowest values are found in the deep ocean and in the oceanic gyres. Our dataset should be valuable for more in-depth studies that focus on the analysis of regional, temporal and global patterns of particle size distribution and flux as well as for the development and adjustment of regional and global biogeochemical models. Marine planktonic eukaryotes play critical roles in global biogeochemical cycles and climate. However, their poor representation in culture collections limits our understanding of the evolutionary history and genomic underpinnings of planktonic ecosystems. Here, we used 280 billion Tara Oceans metagenomic reads from polar, temperate, and tropical sunlit oceans to reconstruct and manually curate more than 700 abundant and widespread eukaryotic environmental genomes ranging from 10 Mbp to 1.3 Gbp. This genomic resource covers a wide range of poorly characterized eukaryotic lineages that complement long-standing contributions from culture collections while better representing plankton in the upper layer of the oceans. India’s pulse policies are anchored in a cereal-centric farming system and prioritize national self-sufficiency as well as the mitigation of relative price increases in food. On the farmer side, government policy includes price support (a minimum support price [MSP]) for different pulses initially without procurement, but later backed by public procurement. The MSP plus procurement elicited a comparatively high supply response. Without procurement, the MSP worked only to anchor prices and benefit traders at the farmers’ expense. By not accounting for the needed risk premium (for a supply response) the MSP kept domestic production low. Even as the world’s largest importer of pulses, the scale of pulse imports in India have generally not been large enough to cool its markets and bring down domestic prices. Instantaneous supply adjustments by exporters in response to trade policy changes are difficult.

In turn, Myanmar is highly dependent on exports to India. A proposed advance purchase agreement between India and Myanmar in 2016 failed, but revisiting the original proposed purchase agreement could be in the best interest of both countries, as Myanmar could secure a large market for pulses at stable prices and India could ensure its supply of pulses.

It comprises seven member states: five from South Asia, namely, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, and two from Southeast Asia, Myanmar and Thailand. BIMSTEC region is home to around 1.5 billion people, that is, nearly 22 percent of the global population with a combined gross domestic product (GDP) of US$2.7 trillion.

This practicum answers the research question, “how to create a climate-responsive water management system within a working agricultural landscape.” Through literature review of the natural and human history, GIS mapping, careful site analysis, and extensive site visits, the landscape’s inherent way of being began to emerge as a path forward for climate resilient provincial waterways. Policy, land use, and crop inventory analysis make the current state clear and existing watershed district / landowner partnerships offer a platform for broader scale interventions. This practicum proposes to use Manitoba’s GROW program as a mechanism to incentivize farmers to adopt the intervention. Provincial waterways were once natural creeks and rivers that have been channelized to assist spring runoff from agricultural fields. These ecologically poor waterways are dozens, if not hundreds, of kilometres long and are maintained by a variety of groups: the province, the rural municipality, or the adjacent landowner. Therefore, an intervention in a waterway must be easy enough to be adopted by this variety of groups but also means the capacity for having a substantial impact on water across the province is markedly increased when compared with a small, single site, intervention. Knowledge gained through background research and on-the-ground site analysis led to a relatively simple intervention that employs three design elements already found in the region: shelterbelts, wetlands, and prairie grasslands. These three elements combine to capture snow and eventual spring melt, create habitat, clean agricultural pollutants from the waterway, and hold water in place, ultimately increasing the water storage capacity of provincial waterways by a significant 70%. This practicum leans on vernacular practice, embraces the inherent extremes of the prairie ecoregion, and offers a way to maintain a productive agricultural landscape while responding to the increasing challenges of the climate crisis.

The production of vehicles is one of the most resource-intensive industries. 10 % of the overall consumption of plastics, 6 million tonnes/year is used by the European vehicle industry1. Increase the use of recycled plastics in vehicles is one of the key challenges for sustainable transformation of the vehicle industry as it plays an important role in saving resources and reducing greenhouse emissions. The main goal of this project was to contribute to increased use of recycled plastic in the Swedish vehicle industry. Volvo Cars goal is that 25 % of the plastic used in cars should be recycled or biobased by 2025. The goal will most probably be reached according to Volvo Cars. Volvo group has the goal to be fossil neutral, which requires recycled material in the truck components. The recycled plastics evaluated in the project came from both post industrial waste (PIR) and post consumer waste (PCR). Rondo Plast, Polykemi, Albis, Mocom, Biesterfield, Borealis, Sabic, Total and LG Chem have supplied recycled and virgin plastics tested in the project. The plastics we have focusing on in this project were polypropylene (PP) plastics (homo- and copolymer) and PC/ABS plastic compounds. Thus, these plastics are most used in vehicle components and recycled PP plastics are more accessible than the other plastics that can be used in vehicles. Analysis and evaluation of recycled plastics have been performed by RISE. Also, long term ageing and recyclability studies have been performed. Item does not contain fulltext, Treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), especially nilotinib, often results in hyperglycemia, which may further increase cardiovascular disease risk in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The mechanism underlying the TKI-induced glucose dysregulation is not clear. TKIs are suggested to affect insulin secretion but also insulin sensitivity of peripheral tissue has been proposed to play a role in the pathogenesis of TKI-induced hyperglycemia. Here, we aimed to assess whether skeletal muscle glucose uptake and insulin responses are altered in nondiabetic patients with CML receiving TKI treatment. After a glycogen-depleted exercise bout, an intravenous glucose bolus (0.3 g/kg body weight) was administered to monitor 2-h glucose tolerance and insulin response in 14 patients with CML receiving nilotinib, 14 patients with CML receiving imatinib, and 14 non-CML age- and gender-matched controls. A dynamic [(18)F]-FDG PET scan during a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp was performed in a subgroup of 12 male patients with CML to assess m. quadriceps glucose uptake. We showed that patients with CML treated with nilotinib have an increased insulin response to intravenous glucose administration after muscle glycogen-depleted exercise. Despite the increased insulin response to glucose administration in patients with CML receiving nilotinib, glucose disappearance rates were significantly slower in nilotinib-treated patients when compared with controls in the first 15 min after glucose administration. Although [(18)F]-FDG uptake in m. quadriceps was not different, patients receiving nilotinib showed a trend toward decreased glucose infusion rates during euglycemic clamping when compared with patients receiving imatinib. 01 februari 2023, Item does not contain fulltext, AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: The role of beta cell mass in the balance of glucose control and hypoglycaemic burden in people with type 1 diabetes is unclear. We applied positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with radiolabelled exendin to compare beta cell mass among people with type 1 diabetes and either low glucose variability (LGV) or high glucose variability (HGV). METHODS: All participants with either LGV (n=9) or HGV (n=7) underwent a mixed-meal tolerance test to determine beta cell function and wore a blinded continuous glucose monitor for a week. After an i.v. injection with [(68)Ga]Ga-NODAGA-exendin-4, PET images were acquired for the quantification of pancreatic uptake of radiolabelled exendin. The mean standardised uptake value (SUVmean) of the pancreas was used to determine the amount of beta cell mass. RESULTS: Participants with LGV had lower HbA(1c) (46.0 mmol/mol [44.5-52.5] [6.4% (6.3-7)] vs 80 mmol/mol [69.0-110] [9.5% (8.5-12.2)], p=0.001) and higher time in range (TIR) (75.6% [73.5-90.3] vs 38.7% [25.1-48.5], p=0.002) than those with HGV. The SUVmean of the pancreas was higher for the LGV than for the HGV group (5.1 [3.6-5.6] vs 2.9 [2.1-3.4], p=0.008). The AUC(C-peptide):AUC(glucose) ratio was numerically, but not statistically, higher in the LGV compared with the HGV group (2.7×10(-2) [6.2×10(-4)-5.3×10(-2)] vs 9.3×10(-4) [4.7×10(-4)-5.2×10(-3)], p=0.21). SUVmean correlated with the AUC(C-peptide):AUC(glucose) ratio (Pearson r=0.64, p=0.01), as well as with the TIR (r=0.64, p=0.01) and the SD of interstitial glucose levels (r=-0.66, p=0.007). CONCLUSION/INTERPRETATION: Our data show higher beta cell mass in people with type 1 diabetes and LGV than in those with HGV, independent of beta cell function.

The novel radiotracer [(68)Ga]Ga-NODAGA-exendin-4 forms a stable complex after a simple and fast labeling procedure. Beta-cell mass in the islets of Langerhans can be visualized using [(68)Ga]Ga-NODAGA-exendin-4, which is promising for research into diabetes mellitus (DM) pathophysiology. Furthermore, this radiotracer enables very sensitive detection of insulinomas, resulting from vast overexpression of GLP-1Rs, and seems promising for the detection of focal lesions in congenital hyperinsulinism (CHI). Here, we describe the procedures involved in [(68)Ga]Ga-NODAGA-exendin-4 positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) imaging including the radiolabeling of the NODAGA-exendin conjugate with (68)Ga, quality controls, and PET/CT.

DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS: Fifty-six genetically confirmed Dutch patients with syndromic USH2a and 120 healthy controls. METHODS: Sleep quality, prevalence, and type of sleep disorders, chronotype, fatigue, and daytime sleepiness were assessed using 5 questionnaires: (1) Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, (2) Holland Sleep Disorders Questionnaire, (3) Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, (4) Checklist Individual Strength, and (5) Epworth Sleepiness Scale. For a subset of patients, recent data on visual function were used to study the potential correlation between the outcomes of the questionnaires and disease progression. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Results of all questionnaires were compared between USH2a and control cohorts, and the scores of the patients were compared with disease progression defined by age, visual field size, and visual acuity. RESULTS: Compared with the control population, patients with USH2a experienced a poorer quality of sleep, a higher incidence of sleep disorders, and higher levels of fatigue and daytime sleepiness. Intriguingly, the sleep disturbances and high levels of fatigue were not correlated with the level of visual impairment. These results are in accordance with the patients' experiences that their sleep problems already existed before the onset of vision loss. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates a high prevalence of fatigue and poor sleep quality experienced by patients with USH2a. Recognition of sleep problems as a comorbidity of Usher syndrome would be a first step toward improved patient care. The absence of a relationship between the level of visual impairment and the severity of reported sleep problems is suggestive of an extraretinal origin of the sleep disturbances. The Tara Pacific expedition (2016–2018) sampled coral ecosystems around 32 islands in the Pacific Ocean and the ocean surface waters at 249 locations, resulting in the collection of nearly 58 000 samples. The expedition was designed to systematically study warm-water coral reefs and included the collection of corals, fish, plankton, and seawater samples for advanced biogeochemical, molecular, and imaging analysis. Here we provide a complete description of the sampling methodology, and we explain how to explore and access the different datasets generated by the expedition. Environmental context data were obtained from taxonomic registries, gazetteers, almanacs, climatologies, operational biogeochemical models, and satellite observations. The quality of the different environmental measures has been validated not only by various quality control steps, but also through a global analysis allowing the comparison with known environmental large-scale structures. Such publicly released datasets open the perspective to address a wide range of scientific questions.

Enligt Skolverket har ca 5 % av alla elever en särbegåvning som gör att de lär sig i så mycket snabbare takt än sina klasskamrater, att de kan vara i behov av anpassad undervisning. Internationellt finns det forskning kring ett identification-gap inom gifted education. Den här kvantitativa studien ämnar undersöka om detta även är fallet i Sverige och hur undervisningen anpassats för dessa elever i de naturorienterande ämnena och teknik. Frågeställningen är: Hur många procent av eleverna i NO- och teknikundervisningen i årskurs 6 är identifierade med särbegåvning? samt Hur många av de identifierade eleverna får anpassad undervisning i NO och/eller teknik. Även variablerna socioekonomisk status, elevers kön samt praktiska- och teoretiska områden finns med i undersökningen. Metoden som användes var enkät med fasta svarsalternativ som skickades till NO- och tekniklärare i en svensk stad. Svarsfrekvensen var 40 %. Studien visar att 79 % av lärarna som svarade inte hade någon elev i sin NO- och/eller teknikklass som identifierats som särbegåvad. I genomsnitt var 0,7 % av de svarande lärarnas eleverna identifierade och 0,6 % fick anpassad undervisning på grund av särbegåvningen. Den låga identifikationsgraden gjorde att flera av studiens frågor blev obesvarade, även om resultaten redovisas. 100 % av de svarande lärarna vill ha mer information om särbegåvade elever i NO och teknik. Slutsatsen dras att viljan finns men en stor del av lärarna, 79 %, i nuläget inte vet tillräckligt för att kunna identifiera elever som särbegåvade i NO- och teknik och anpassa undervisningen därefter.

Intrahepatic transplantation of islets of Langerhans (ITx) is a treatment option for individuals with complicated type 1 diabetes and profoundly unstable glycemic control, but its therapeutic success is hampered by deterioration of graft function over time. To improve ITx strategies, technologies to noninvasively monitor the fate and survival of transplanted islets over time are of great potential value. We used [Ga-68]Ga-NODAGA-exendin-4 (Ga-68-exendin) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) imaging to demonstrate the feasibility of quantifying b-cellmass in intrahepatic islet grafts in 13 individuals with type 1 diabetes, nine after ITx with functional islet grafts and four control patients not treated with ITx. beta-Cell function was measured by mixed-meal tolerance test. With dynamic Ga-68-exendin PET/CT images, we determined tracer accumulation in hepatic hotspots, and intrahepatic fat was assessed using MRI and spectroscopy. Quantification of hepatic hotspots showed a significantly higher uptake of Ga-68-exendin in the ITx group compared with the control group (median 0.55 [interquartile range 0.51-0.63] vs. 0.43 [0.42-0.45]). GLP-1 receptor expression was found in transplanted islets by immunohistochemistry. Intrahepatic fat was not detected in a majority of the individuals. Our study provides the first clinical evidence that radiolabeled exendin imaging can be used to monitor viable transplanted islets after intraportal ITx.

The objective of the study is to analyze the research projects awarded at Science Fair Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Bahia (FECIBA) using the consensual aspects of the nature of scientific knowledge. The research carried out was qualitative and document. The data were taken from the two editions of FECIBA magazine and the book Practices to Share (Volume II). Bardin's Content Analysis methodology was applied to document analysis. The result of the research shows that most of the projects developed by students, for science fairs in schools, do not present the problem as a driver of investigative activity., El objetivo del estudio es analizar los proyectos de pesquisa premiados en la Feria de Ciencias, Espíritu Emprendedor e Innovación de Bahia (Feira de Ciência, Empreendedorismo e Inovação da Bahia - FECIBA), utilizando los aspectos consensuales sobre la naturaleza del conocimiento científico. La pesquisa realizada fue cualitativa y documental. Los datos fueron obtenidos de las dos ediciones de la FECIBA en Revista e del libro Prácticas Para Compartir - Volumen II (Práticas para Compartilhar – Volume II). La metodología Análisis de Contenido de Bardin fue aplicada en el análisis documental. El resultado de la pesquisa evidencia que la mayoría de los proyectos desarrollados por los estudiantes, para las ferias de ciencias en las escuelas, no presenta el problema como propulsor de la actividad investigativa., O objetivo do estudo é analisar os projetos de pesquisa premiados na Feira de Ciências, Empreendedorismo e Inovação da Bahia (FECIBA) utilizando os aspectos consensuais sobre a natureza do conhecimento científico. Tropical coral reefs are among the most affected ecosystems by climate change and face increasing loss in the coming decades. Effective conservation strategies that maximize ecosystem resilience must be informed by the accurate characterization of extant genetic diversity and population structure together with an understanding of the adaptive potential of keystone species. Here we analyzed samples from the Tara Pacific Expedition (2016–2018) that completed an 18,000 km longitudinal transect of the Pacific Ocean sampling three widespread corals—Pocillopora meandrina, Porites lobata, and Millepora cf. platyphylla—across 33 sites from 11 islands. Using deep metagenomic sequencing of 269 colonies in conjunction with morphological analyses and climate variability data, we can show that despite a targeted sampling the transect encompasses multiple cryptic species. These species exhibit disparate biogeographic patterns and, most importantly, distinct evolutionary patterns in identical environmental regimes. Our findings demonstrate on a basin scale that evolutionary trajectories are species-specific and can only in part be predicted from the environment. This highlights that conservation strategies must integrate multi-species investigations to discern the distinct genomic footprints shaped by selection as well as the genetic potential for adaptive change.

Cyanide-a fast-acting poison-is easy to obtain given its widespread use in manufacturing industries. It is a high-threat chemical agent that poses a risk of occupational exposure in addition to being a terrorist agent. FDA-approved cyanide antidotes must be given intravenously, which is not practical in a mass casualty setting due to the time and skill required to obtain intravenous access. Glyoxylate is an endogenous metabolite that binds cyanide and reverses cyanide-induced redox imbalances independent of chelation. Efficacy and biochemical mechanistic studies in an FDA-approved preclinical animal model have not been reported. Therefore, in a swine model of cyanide poisoning, we evaluated the efficacy of intramuscular glyoxylate on clinical, metabolic, and biochemical endpoints. Animals were instrumented for continuous hemodynamic monitoring and infused with potassium cyanide. Following cyanide-induced apnea, saline control or glyoxylate was administered intramuscularly. Throughout the study, serial blood samples were collected for pharmacokinetic, metabolite, and biochemical studies, in addition, vital signs, hemodynamic parameters, and laboratory values were measured. Survival in glyoxylate-treated animals was 83% compared with 12% in saline-treated control animals (p < .01). Glyoxylate treatment improved physiological parameters including pulse oximetry, arterial oxygenation, respiration, and pH. In addition, levels of citric acid cycle metabolites returned to baseline levels by the end of the study. Moreover, glyoxylate exerted distinct effects on redox balance as compared with a cyanide-chelating countermeasure. In our preclinical swine model of lethal cyanide poisoning, intramuscular administration of the endogenous metabolite glyoxylate improved survival and clinical outcomes, and ameliorated the biochemical effects of cyanide.

This presentation and workshop are a practical exploration of how Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), used as an inclusive strategy, can be used as an effective tool to support Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in providing multiple means of engagement, representation, action and expression for every student in our learning environment. Originally developed for Art education, VTS uses art to teach visual literacy, thinking skills and communication skills to young people. VTS is an invitational space where unique perspectives are valued and explored. It uses safe and accessible questions to initiate an active process of discovery and provides opportunities to build on prior knowledge, develop critical thinking, and progress learning. More recently, researchers and educators have explored VTS in the inclusion space and the interconnection between VTS and UDL across curriculum areas. This presentation and workshop will give participants a brief overview of VTS before signposting how, as an inclusion strategy, it aligns with the vision of UDL and can be used as a practical tool in our learning environments. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with the VTS process and reflect on how this strategy can support inclusion in their subject area. This will be of interest to early childhood, primary and post-primary (secondary) teachers of all subjects. It will also be of interest to those with an interest in Arts Education.
