Search

We propose a novel way to search for feebly interacting massive particles, exploiting two properties of systems involving collisions between high energy electrons and intense laser pulses. The first property is that the electron-intense-laser collision results in a large flux of hard photons, as the laser behaves effectively as a thick medium. The second property is that the emitted photons free-stream inside the laser and thus for them the laser behaves effectively as a very thin medium. Combining these two features implies that the electron-intense-laser collision is an apparatus which can efficiently convert UV electrons to a large flux of hard, co-linear photons. We further propose to direct this unique large and hard flux of photons onto a physical dump which in turn is capable of producing feebly interacting massive particles, in a region of parameters that has never been probed before. We denote this novel apparatus as ``optical dump'' or NPOD (new physics search with optical dump). The proposed LUXE experiment at Eu.XFEL has all the required basic ingredients of the above experimental concept. We discuss how this concept can be realized in practice by adding a detector after the last physical dump of the experiment to reconstruct the two-photon decay product of a new spin-0 particle. We show that even with a relatively short dump, the search can still be background free. Remarkably, even with a 40 TW laser, which corresponds to the initial run, and definitely with a 350 TW laser, of the main run with one year of data taking, LUXE-NPOD will be able to probe uncharted territory of both models of pseudo-scalar and scalar fields, and in particular probe natural of scalar theories for masses above 100 MeV., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, and 6 pages of supplementary material

This Conceptual Design Report describes LUXE (Laser Und XFEL Experiment), an experimental campaign that aims to combine the high-quality and high-energy electron beam of the European XFEL with a powerful laser to explore the uncharted terrain of quantum electrodynamics characterised by both high energy and high intensity. We will reach this hitherto inaccessible regime of quantum physics by analysing high-energy electron-photon and photon-photon interactions in the extreme environment provided by an intense laser focus. The physics background and its relevance are presented in the science case which in turn leads to, and justifies, the ensuing plan for all aspects of the experiment: Our choice of experimental parameters allows (i) effective field strengths to be probed at and beyond the Schwinger limit and (ii) a precision to be achieved that permits a detailed comparison of the measured data with calculations. In addition, the high photon flux predicted will enable a sensitive search for new physics beyond the Standard Model. The initial phase of the experiment will employ an existing 40 TW laser, whereas the second phase will utilise an upgraded laser power of 350 TW. All expectations regarding the performance of the experimental set-up as well as the expected physics results are based on detailed numerical simulations throughout.

В статье рассматриваются методы получения тонких пленок оксида церия, совместимые с классической кремниевой технологией. Показано, что вольт-фарадные характеристики (ВФХ) структур алюминий – оксид церия – кремний зависят от метода получения диэлектрической пленки. Рассмотрена система зарядов на границе раздела диэлектрик-полупроводник и вблизи нее. Установлено, что на ВФХ таких структур оказывает влияние только фиксированный заряд в диэлектрике, поскольку другие типы электрического заряда отсутствуют и/или их количество пренебрежимо мало. Установлено, что МДП-структуры, полученные с использованием метода вспышки, характеризуются обратимыми изменениями напряжения плоских зон вследствие изменения величины фиксированного заряда в диэлектрике, под воздействием внешних факторов. Метод окисления металлического зеркала позволяет получить МДП-структуры с фиксированным зарядом в диэлектрике, независимым от воздействия внешних факторов.Библ. 9, рис. 13., Thin films of cerium oxide are increasingly used in electronics. This interest is primarily due to the unique properties of cerium oxide: high dielectric constant; high dielectric strength; high refractive index; similarity to silicon in the crystal lattice parameter; thin film production methods are compatible with classical silicon MIS technology. The aim of this work is to establish a relationship between the electrophysical parameters of MIS structures and the technological method for producing thin dielectric films by analyzing the system of electric charges in a dielectric and at the insulator-semiconductor interface. The dependence of the electrophysical parameters of the MIS structure on the method for producing thin dielectric films is most clearly manifested in the capacitance – voltage (C – V) characteristics of these structures. This dependence is directly related to the system of electric charges in the insulator and at the insulator-semiconductor interface, which depends on the technological process of creating thin dielectric films on a semiconductor substrate.The system of charges at the insulator-semiconductor interface and near it is considered. It has been established that only the charge fixed in the dielectric influences the CV characteristics of such structures, since there are no other types of charges and / or their number is negligible. The article discusses methods for producing thin cerium oxide films that are compatible with classical silicon technology. It is shown that the capacitance-voltage characteristics (CV characteristics) of aluminum – cerium – silicon structures depend on the producing method of the dielectric film. To identify the presence of charge fixed in the dielectric, approximation of the CV characteristic was use in the voltage range corresponding to the depletion mode of the surface layer of the semiconductor. Цей інтерес зумовлений, насамперед, унікальними властивостями оксиду церію: високою діелектричною проникністю; високою діелектричною міцністю; високим показником заломлення; подібністю в параметрі кристалічної решітки до кремнію; сумісністю методів отримання тонких плівок з класичною кремнієвою МДН технологією. Метою даної роботи є встановлення взаємозв'язку між електрофізичними параметрами МДН структур та технологічним методом отримання тонких діелектричних плівок. Для досягнення поставленої мети проведено аналіз системи електричних зарядів у діелектрику та на межі розділу діелектрик-напівпровідник. Залежність електрофізичних параметрів МДН структури від способу отримання тонких діелектричних плівок найбільш яскраво проявляється на вольт-фарадних характеристиках цих структур. Ця залежність безпосередньо пов'язана зі зміною системою електричних зарядів в діелектрику та на межі розділу діелектрик-напівпровідника, при зміні технологічного процесу створення тонких діелектричних плівок на напівпровідниковій підкладці. У статті розглядаються способи отримання тонких плівок оксиду церію, сумісні з класичною кремнієвою технологія: метод спалаху та метод окиснення металевого дзеркала. Розглянуто систему зарядів на межі розділу діелектрик-напівпровідника та біля неї. Встановлено, що лише заряд, фіксований у діелектрику, впливає на вольт-фарадні характеристики МДН-структур, оскільки інші типи заряду відсутні та/або їх кількість є нехтовно малою. Показано, що вольт-фарадні характеристики структур алюміній-діоксид церію-кремній залежать від способу отримання діелектричної плівки. Для виявлення наявності заряду, зафіксованого в діелектрику, було використано апроксимацію вольт-фарадних характеристики в діапазоні напруги, що відповідає режиму збіднення поверхневого шару напівпровідника. Nowadays, MIS structures based on silicon dioxide films have become the most widely used. However, the desire to reduce the channel length and the nano-scaling in electronics showed, that SiO2 can’t provide the specified MIS devices parameters and characteristics. This is due to the superfine insulator films problem. First of all, this can be solved by replacing SiO2 with another insulator that meets certain requirements. Oxides of transition and rare-earth metals meets almost all of these requirements. However, the principle issue of insulator and semiconductor compatibility remains unsolved in terms of ensure theirs interface quality. Therefore, the researching purpose is to create a general approach to the selection of insulator which is an alternative to silicon dioxide. This insulator must provide a high quality of insulator-semiconductor interface.In MIS structures, the main indicator of semiconductor-insulator interface is its density of the electric charge. Low values of the charge density at the semiconductor-insulator interface are corresponds to high quality of the interface. This is due to the fact that low interface charge density has low affecting on threshold voltage and provide higher its stability. In the first approximation, the surface states density is identically equal to the incomplete bonds density at semiconductor-insulator interface. Therefore, this parameter is selected as the basis of the insulator choosing criterion for a particular semiconductor substrate.It is shown that the classical theory of crystalline lattice (site aspect) can't allow to obtain an analytical expression for the insulator choosing criterion for MIS structures. Therefore, a new form of description of a crystal lattice (intersite aspect) is proposed. Since the crystals differs not only by symmetry but also by the crystallographic orientation of their interface with the vacuum, then an infinite number of solutions about value of incomplete bonds density at the interface, Рассматриваются вопросы общего подхода к поиску диэлектрика для кремниевых МДП-структур в качестве альтернативного диоксиду кремния (SiO2).Показано, что на основе классической теории описания кристаллической решётки (узловой аспект) невозможно получить критерий выбора диэлектрика для МДП-структуры. Поэтому предложен новый –межузловой аспект – описания кристаллической решётки на основе которого получен общий критерий выбора диэлектрика для любой полупроводниковой подложки. Благодаря введению нового характеристического параметра кристаллического вещества – средней длины связи – получено аналитическое выражение для работы выхода электрона из кристалла.Установлено, что наиболее пригодным для кремниевых МДП-структур является диоксид церия CeO2.Библ. 10, рис. 9., Розглядаються питання загального підходу до пошуку діелектрика для кремнієвих МДН-структур як альтернативного діоксиду кремнію (SiO2).Показано, що на основі класичної теорії опису кристалічної решітки (вузловий аспект) неможливо одержати критерій вибору діелектрика для МДН-структур. Тому запропоновано новий – міжвузловий аспект – опису кристалічної решітки, на основі якого одержано загальний критерій вибору діелектрика для будь-якої напівпровідникової підкладки. This paper discusses the use of solid solutions of multicomponent semiconductors for solar energy converted and storage devices in some structural and technological formation options suitable for monolithic integration. The eight-component system under consideration makes it possible to obtain varizon layers from Eg = 6.4 eV (AlN) to Eg = 0.18 eV (InSb) with any set of heterogeneous macro-, micro- and nanosized LED (laser) structures, which allows conduct classical sequential and parallel electronic and optical processing of information, and convert photon fluxes into electric current and accumulate electrical energy in potential wells in the same chip. In this case, the entire spectrum of solar electromagnetic radiation from 200 nm (ultraviolet) to infrared radiation of 12000 nm is used, which is effectively absorbed in the gap layer practically without loss of energy transfer to one or several narrow-band regions specially created by the program in the epitaxy of the varizon layers.The article analyzes examples of the implementation of some heterostructures for converting solar energy into electrical energy, such as AlGaAsSb / GaSb and GaInAsP / InP. The options for optimizing the luminous flux and resistance of contacts in graded-gap construction are considered using the example of an optoelectronic converter. The constructive use of rektenna for energy conversion is considered. The possibilities of using III-nitrides and nanocarbonitrides for energy storage layers of enestors are analyzed. For the formation of optimal nano-templates, as it was established in the course of studies of a simplified model of the process of defect formation, with radii of nano-creations of less critical, dislocation can be achieved with any thickness of the nanotemple. LumiCal is a sampling electromagnetic calorimeter designed for the precise measurement of integrated luminosity in electron positron linear collider experiments. The present report contains a description and results of the first beam test of a multilayer LumiCal prototype with four silicon detector planes. A 5 GeV electron beam from the CERN PS T9 facility was used to study the performance of the LumiCal prototype. Presented results are mainly focused on the transverse structure of the observed electromagnetic shower and the Moli\`ere radius measurement. The 2D azimuth and rapidity structure of the two-particle correlations in relativistic A+A collisions is altered significantly by the presence of sharp inhomogeneities in superdense matter formed in such processes. The causality constraints enforce one to associate the long-range longitudinal correlations observed in a narrow angular interval, the so-called (soft) ridge, with peculiarities of the initial conditions of collision process. This study's objective is to analyze whether multiform initial tubular structures, undergoing the subsequent hydrodynamic evolution and gradual decoupling, can form the soft ridges. Motivated by the flux-tube scenarios, the initial energy density distribution contains the different numbers of high density tube-like boost-invariant inclusions that form a bumpy structure in the transverse plane. The influence of various structures of such initial conditions in the most central A+A events on the collective evolution of matter, resulting spectra, angular particle correlations and vn-coefficients is studied in the framework of the hydrokinetic model (HKM).
