Bridges with and without piers are prone to large wood (LW) accumulations during floods, possibly resulting in an upstream backwater rise, local scour, or destabilization of the structure. To reduce the flood hazard, measures are required that decrease the accumulation probability p of LW. This paper presents a literature review on existing measures to reduce p at bridges. In addition, a series of flume experiments was conducted to examine structural measures at bridge piers regarding their accumulation risk reduction effect. The objective was to test the efficiency of (1) LW fins and (2) bottom sills including various configurations. The resulting p was then compared to the setup without measures. The tested configurations of a LW fin did not decrease p. Bottom sills, in contrast, are a promising measure to reduce p for a defined range of boundary conditions. The installed sills lead to enhanced turbulence and increased surface waves. The best results to reduce p were obtained with two consecutive sills, leading to an average reduction of p by 30%. In contrast to retaining LW with retention structures, LW can be safely guided downstream, thereby preserving its relevant ecological role in rivers. However, the efficiency of bottom sills strongly depends on the approach flow and the sediment transport conditions.

Sustainable reservoir use is globally threatened by sedimentation. It has been generally recognized that inadequate consideration of reservoir sedimentation has caused the worldwide decline of net storage. Numerical models are useful tools to simulate sedimentation processes and can be used to derive efficient counter-measures and sediment management strategies. They can be applied to both existing and potential future reservoirs to predict long-term sedimentation. In this study, an application of a simple, robust, and stable numerical 1D model to Gebidem reservoir in Switzerland accompanied by field measurements is presented. It focusses on seasonal and large-scale reservoir sedimentation processes that occur continuously throughout the whole deposition season, while episodic events like turbidity currents are not taken into account. The model simulates both the delta formation of coarse sediments and the lake-wide sedimentation from homopycnal flows. The model is used to assess the effects and significance of varying boundary conditions like inflow, suspended sediment concentration, particle size distribution (PSD), or reservoir operation. It will be demonstrated that future reservoir operation and PSD are as important as future runoff evolution. Based on these findings, implications on future reservoir operation, also considering climate change, are discussed. Finally, an outlook on pending research topics is given.

The transport of sediment due to the interaction of fluid and solids is a prevalent geophysical process. The detailed modelling of the interaction between the fluid and the sediment particles is still a challenging task. In the present study we model the fluid phase by smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) using the classical approach where the fluid is assumed to be weakly compressible. The sediment, in terms of solid spheres made of granite, is modelled by the discrete element method (DEM). Both of them are meshfree particle methods but SPH is a continuum approach and DEM describes the motion and interaction of discrete solid objects. The interaction between SPH and DEM particles is modelled as particle-to-particle contact in combination with a boundary condition at the solid interface. Therefore, a contact law is used to capture the collision process and to ensure balancing of collision forces. In doing so, two contact types have to be modelled, i.e. sediment-sediment and fluid-sediment. The approach and properties these contact types are presented in detail. Advantages and drawbacks of the approaches are discussed based on examples.
