Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes have a worldwide distribution and are well adapted to urban environments. Because they are the main vectors of dengue, chikungunya and Zika viruses, these two species constitute a threat for public health both in tropical and temperate regions. To better target surveillance and control of Aedes-borne diseases, there is a need for tools with the capacity to predict the spatially distributed dynamics of mosquito vectors at a local scale. In addition, to be used by public health authorities and vector control services, such tools need easy-to-use interfaces allowing a customization by the user according to the geographical and entomological contexts. Various approaches exist to model the dynamics of mosquito populations and to predict their spatial distribution. As mosquitoes depend closely on climatic and environmental conditions, satellite-based information (e.g. vegetation, urbanization type) can prove to be valuable input data for the model. Here, we provide both the scientific community and the operational stakeholders an efficient way for implementing a generic mosquito life cycle-based model, driven by meteorological variables (temperature and rainfall). The implementation of 'ARBOCARTO' considers the landscape context described from very high spatial imagery and/or ancillary data provided by the user. We present its application in various geographical contexts (mainland France and its overseas departments) and for two Aedes mosquitoes species population (Aedes albopictus and Ae. aegypti). In highly diverse environments and latitudes, the comparison between the model outputs and observed entomological data demonstrated the ability of 'ARBOCARTO' tool to provide valuable complementary information to existing entomological surveillance programs. Invasion of new territories by insect vector species that can transmit pathogens is one of the most important threats for human health. The spread of the mosquito Aedes albopictus in Europe is emblematic, because of its major role in the emergence and transmission of arboviruses such as dengue or chikungunya. Here, we modeled the spread of this mosquito species in France through a statistical framework taking advantage of a long-term surveillance dataset going back to the first observation of Ae. albopictus in the Metropolitan area. After validating the model, we show that human activities are especially important for mosquito dispersion while land use is a major factor for mosquito establishment. More importantly, we show that Ae. albopictus invasion is accelerating through time in this area, resulting in a geographic range extending further and further year after year. We also show that sporadic “jump” of Ae. albopictus in a new location far from the colonized area did not succeed in starting a new invasion front so far. Finally, we discuss on a potential adaptation to cooler climate and the risk of invasion into Northern latitudes.

Two species of arbovirus vector, Culex torrentium and Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae), occur in several European countries, but difficulties in their accurate identification and discrimination have hampered both detailed and large-scale distribution and abundance studies. Using a molecular identification method, we identified to species 2559 larvae of Cx. pipiens/torrentium collected from 138 sites in 13 European countries ranging from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean coast. In addition, samples of 1712 males of Cx. pipiens/torrentium collected at several sites in the Czech Republic were identified to species based on the morphology of their hypopygia. We found that the two species occur together in large areas of Europe, and that Cx. torrentium dominates in northern Europe and Cx. pipiens dominates south of the Alps. The transition in dominance occurs in central Europe, where both species are roughly equally common. There was a strong correlation between the length of the growing season at different sites and occurrences of the two species. As the growing season increases, the proportion and detection of Cx. torrentium decrease, whereas those of Cx. pipiens increase. The present findings have important consequences for the interpretation of the results of studies on major enzootic and link-vectors of mosquito-borne bird-associated viruses (i.e. Sindbis, West Nile and Usutu viruses), especially in central Europe and Scandinavia.

"Nanocavitation was detected for the first time in carbon black filled styrene-butadiene rubber (CB-SBR) under uniaxial loading by real time small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) using synchrotron X-ray radiation. A three phase model was developed to calculate the void volume fraction from the scattering invariant Q determined from the observed SAXS patterns. The normalized scattering invariant Q/Q(0), where Q(0) is the invariant before deformation, greatly increased above a critical extension ratio lambda(onset) which we attribute to the formation of nanovoids. Analysis of the 2D scattering patterns show that voids formed are 20-40 nm in size and elongated along the tensile direction. Cavities formed beyond lambda(onset) are smaller as lambda increases. Results from the scattering experiments are strongly supported by macroscopic volume change measurements on the samples under similar uniaxial strain. A nearly constant nanocavitation stress sigma(onset) (25 MPa) was observed when the filler volume fraction phi(CB) was larger than 14%. This value is much higher than that predicted based on the elastic instability of small voids in an unfilled elastomer and shows only a weak dependence on the cross-linking density v(C) in heavily cross-linked samples. An energy based cavitation criterion stressing the importance of confined domains between particles or clusters of particles was adopted and found to be consistent with the observed results. The nanocavities are thought to alter the local stress state and promote local shear motion of filler particles."
