Introduction. Weeds in sugarcane crops can serve as reservoirs of a wide variety of beneficial insects that are useful for biological pest control. Objective. To study the association between beneficial insects and weeds present in sugarcane field edges. Materials and methods. Monthly visits were conducted from April to December 2018 in two sites, El Palmar and Turrialba, two sugarcane regions in Costa Rica. Twenty random sampling points were selected where all insects within a cubic structure of 0,25 m3 were aspirated. Plant species were identified, as well as the families and morphospecies of insects present; the latter were classified based on their feeding habits. Subsequently, a co-occurrence analysis between weeds and insects was performed. Results. A total of 140 species belonging to 41 families were identified, with 83 species in El Palmar and 120 in Turrialba. Weed diversity and richness was higher in Turrialba. A total of 13 689 arthropods distributed across 137 families were identified; the diversity, richness, and abundance showed similarity between both sites. The families Poaceae and Cicadellidae were the most frequently identified in both areas. In the co-occurrence analysis, the weed Kyllinga brevifolia Rottb. exhibited a positive association (p<0.05) with predator insect families such as Coccinellidae, Syrphidae, and Dolichopodidae. Additionally, the parasitoid insect family Eulophidae was associated with eight weed species. Conclusions. The study revealed an association between weed species and beneficial insects in sugarcane cultivars, suggesting their role in maintaining populations of natural enemies for pest control., Introducción. Las arvenses del cultivo de caña de azúcar pueden servir como reservorios de una gran cantidad de insectos benéficos útiles para el control biológico de plagas. Objetivo. Estudiar la asociación entre insectos benéficos y arvenses presentes en bordes de cañales. Materiales y métodos. Se realizaron visitas mensuales desde abril hasta diciembre del 2018, a dos sitios, El Palmar y Turrialba, dos regiones cañeras de Costa Rica. Se seleccionaron veinte puntos de muestreo al azar en donde se aspiraron todos los insectos contenidos en una estructura cuboide de 0,25 m3. Se identificaron las especies de plantas, así como las familias y morfoespecies de insectos presentes; estos últimos se clasificaron de acuerdo con su hábito alimenticio. Luego, se realizó un análisis de co-ocurrencia entre arvenses e insectos. Resultados. Se identificaron 140 especies de arvenses pertenecientes a 41 familias, 83 especies en El Palmar y 120 en Turrialba. La diversidad y riqueza de arvenses fue mayor en Turrialba. Se identificaron 13 689 artrópodos distribuidos en 137 familias; la diversidad, riqueza y abundancia en ambos sitios fue similar. Las familias Poaceae y Cicadellidae fueron identificadas con mayor frecuencia en ambas zonas. En el análisis de co-ocurrencia la arvense Kyllinga brevifolia Rottb., presentó una asociación positiva (p<0,05) con las familias de insectos depredadores Coccinellidae, Syrphidae y Dolichopodidae. La familia de insectos parasitoides Eulophidae se asoció con ocho especies de arvenses. Conclusiones. Se determinó asociación entre especies de arvenses e insectos benéficos en el cultivo de caña de azúcar, por lo que se puede asociar su papel al mantenimiento de las poblaciones de enemigos naturales para el control de plagas.

Scale insects are sucking insects belonging to 55 families of the infraorder Coccomorpha (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha). Of the 8,468 species described, only 640 have been considered as agricultural pests. These insects, as well as others, are an integral part of the ecosystem. From that point of view, all insects should be treated as beneficial. That is why it is important to make it clear that the term "pest" is completely anthropocentric, defined as any organism that has a harmful impact on human beings, their diet, or their living conditions, including organisms that act as vectors of diseases. Scale insects can be classified as beneficial or as "pests", depending on the circumstances. An insect that feeds on a weed or provides a valuable resource is considered beneficial, but when it attacks a cultivated plant, it is immediately classified as a "pest." In this work the other side of the spectrum is presented, i.e., the beneficial scale insects, which are used as sources of food, wax, dyes, resins, and weed control agents. Very few know that the varnish that gives shine to guitars and violins is extracted from lac insects of the genus Kerria (Kerriidae); that carminic acid, the raw material for the red colorant in lipsticks and many foods, is extracted from the cochineal insect Dactylopius coccus Costa (Dactylopiidae); and that the biblical manna are the flakes made from the dried honeydew of two species of mealybugs, Trabutina mannipara (Hemprich & Ehrenberg) and Trabutina serpentina (Green) (Pseudococcidae)., Los insectos escama son insectos chupadores pertenecientes a 55 familias del infraorden Coccomorpha (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha). De las 8468 especies descritas, solo 640 se han considerado como plagas de la agricultura. Estos insectos, así como los demás, son parte integral del ecosistema. Desde ese punto de vista, todos los insectos deberían tratarse como benéficos. Es por eso por lo que es importante dejar claro que el término “plaga” es completamente antropocéntrico, definiéndose como cualquier organismo que tenga un impacto nocivo sobre el ser humano, su alimentación o sus condiciones de vida, incluidos los organismos que actúan como vectores de enfermedades. Los insectos escama pueden calificarse como benéficos o como "plagas", según las circunstancias. Un insecto que se alimenta de una mala hierba o proporciona un recurso valioso se considera benéfico, pero cuando ataca una planta cultivada, inmediatamente se clasifica como una "plaga". En este trabajo se presenta el otro lado del espectro, los insectos escama benéficos, que se utilizan como fuentes de alimento, cera, colorantes, resinas, agentes de control de malezas. Muy pocos saben que el barniz que da brillo a las guitarras y violines se extrae de los insectos laca del género Kerria (Kerriidae); que el ácido carmínico, materia prima del colorante rojo de los lápices labiales y de muchos alimentos se extrae de la cochinilla del carmín Dactylopius coccus Costa (Dactylopiidae); y que el maná bíblico son las hojuelas que se producen cuando se seca la miel de rocío de dos especies de cochinillas harinosas, Trabutina mannipara (Hemprich & Ehrenberg) y Trabutina serpentina (Green) (Pseudococcidae).

Although great in number and hard at work in agricultural and landscape systems, beneficial insects are often overlooked and can be overshadowed by the comparatively small number of insect pests. Only about 1% of all insects and mites are harmful. With some look-alike insects and heightened concern for pest populations, there is potential to wrongly label a beneficial as a pest. This guide was developed to help properly identify Utah's natural enemies and raise awareness of ways to attract and conserve them.

Invasive species are a leading and growing threat to our nation's agricultural and natural resources. Thousands of exotic species have been introduced into the U.S., and the estimated damage and management costs of invasive species exceed $138 billion per year. In response to this threat, the Utah Plant Pest Diagnostic Lab (UPPDL) and Utah State University (USU) Extension created the Utah First Detector Program to prepare citizen responders with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify invasive insects, collect and submit high quality samples to the UPPDL, and notify the appropriate authorities when necessary. The UPPDL and USU Extension work closely with other federal and state agencies, such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Plant Protection and Quarantine (USDA APHIS PPQ) Program, USDA Forest Service, and Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF), to address invasive pest threats. The Utah First Detector Program is, in part, an extension of the Utah Cooperative Agricultural Pest Survey (CAPS) Program, which is part of the larger national CAPS program. Weeds and non-cultivated plants have a great impact on abundance and diversity of beneficial arthropods in agriculture. The main aim of this work was to study the influence of the ecological infrastructure (meadows and weedy margins) on the arthropod composition in vineyard surrounding landscape. Research was carried out from May to October during three years. Sampling took place in the ecological infrastructure of three differently managed vineyards (organic, integrated and extensive). Three zones were chosen in each vineyard (3 m, 10 m, and 30 m from the edge of the vineyard). Samples were taken using a standardised sweep net method. In total, we captured 6032 spiders and 1309 insects belonging to 4 orders and 10 families. Arthropod fauna was numerically dominated by Aranea (82.1%); among insects, Coleoptera was the most abundant taxonomic group (10.6%); Neuroptera showed the lowest value (0.88%). Significant differences were found between sites and zones. Organic vineyard showed the highest abundance of arthropods (92.41% were spiders) and in the integrated vineyard there was a 23% of insects. Both the highest abundance of arthropods and the highest Shannon Index value (2.46) was found 3 m away from the edge of the vineyard. Results showed that spiders were the dominant arthropods and ladybugs the dominant insects. Weedy strips near the edge of the vineyard contained a high number of insects and spiders. Our results support the importance of weedy margins in enhancing the population of arthropods as well as in biodiversity promotion. Well-managed field margins could play important role in biological control of vineyard pests.

De gemeente Breda besteedt veel aandacht en geld aan bijvriendelijk beheer van het openbaar groen. Van de circa 1.100 ha beheert deze gemeente bijna 80% ecologisch, dus met nadrukkelijke aandacht voor plant en dier. Voor wat betreft bijen moet daarbij onder meer worden gedacht aan de aanplant van bolgewassen, het inzaaien van wilde bloemenakkers en de aanplant van wilgen, lindes, esdoorns en andere bijvriendelijke bomen en struiken.

De belangstelling voor de natuur in de stad is sinds de jaren 90 van de vorige eeuw enorm toegenomen. Uit allerlei gegevens blijkt dat de biodiversiteit in de stad veel groter is dan men op het eerste gezicht zou verwachten. Voor het beleven van de natuur hoef je niet helemaal naar een natuurreservaat te gaan. In het jaar 2000 verscheen ‘Stadsecologie’ van Jelle Reumer en in 2004 ‘Stadsplanten’ van Ton Denters. Beide boeken inspireerden biologen van allerlei pluimage om eens goed rond te kijken in de stad.

Senna mexicana chapmanii (Fabaceae: Caesalpinoideae), an attractive and threatened species native to pine rocklands of southern Florida, is consumed by folivorous caterpillars of Sulfur butterflies (Lepidoptera: Pieridae). Caterpillars may be deterred or eaten by predators, but also very important are parasitoids, both flies and wasps. This study investigated the effects of plant density on Sulfur caterpillar numbers and rates of parasitization. Senna mexicana chapmanii plantations were established at agricultural and urban areas; both sites are adjacent to protected pine rockland areas. Sulfur butterfly immature stages were collected and reared to glean information regarding number of herbivores and rates of parasitization. Continuing this weekly monitoring protocol over the course of a year provided data to determine that higher plant density has an effect on levels of parisitization and is correlated with the number of herbivores. Elucidating these patterns has important implications understanding the factors that regulate interactions in this plant/herbivore/parasitoid system.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is a multifaceted approach to managing pests by using multiple tactics (e.g., cultural, biological, mechanical, and chemical control) and the judicious use of pesticides to suppress pests. One component of an IPM program is pest monitoring to determine whether (1) pests are present, (2) the susceptible life-stage is present, and (3) pests are reaching economic thresholds requiring treatment. In alfalfa, the primary monitoring tool is a sweep net. A standard sweep net has a 15 inch diameter hoop, canvas bag, and a handle. A sweep net can be used to compare your pest catch to published economic thresholds. Consult with a local county Extension agent on how to obtain and use a sweep net. Beneficial insects, or predatory insects, play an important role in natural pest suppression in alfalfa. Broad-spectrum insecticide use decreases predatory insects resulting in increased risk of secondary pest outbreaks, especially aphids. Conserve beneficials by not using insecticides when pests are below economic thresholds. Using a sweep net will also help determine which predators are present and whether a field is balanced with predators that help keep pests in check.

Bijen en hommels zijn door hun bouw en gedrag goede bestuivers. Maar ze kunnen meer. Ze zijn ook heel geschikt om antagonistische micro-organismen voor ziektebestrijding over te brengen én informatie vanuit het veld over ziekten mee terug te nemen. Belangrijk voor al deze taken is: hoe houden we ze actief onder de ‘nieuwe’ teeltomstandigheden in de kas?

In het praktijknetwerk 'Biodiversiteit onder glas' is door glastuinders geëxperimenteerd met bloemen in en rond de kas. Al dan niet in combinatie met bankerplanten zoals granen. Deze brochure is gemaakt om kennis over bloemen en biologische bestrijders te geven en specifiek het nut van biodiversiteit.

The entomopathogenic fungus, Verticillium lecanii (Zimm.) Viegas was evaluated in the laboratory for its safety to natural enemies of cabbage aphid, Trichogramma chilonis Ishii and two species of silk worms using different formulations and inoculation methods. The fungus was not pathogenic to Chrysoperia carnea (Stephens), Coccinella septempunctata (Linnaeus), Episyrphus baiteatus (De Geer) and Sumia cynthia ricini (Boisduval), but was found to be pathogenic to Bombyx mori (Linnaeus). Aphid mummification and Diaeretiella rupae adult emergence were significantly affected by the fungus. Parasitism, adult emergence and adult longevity of Trichogramma chilonis were affected by fungal treatments. The adverse effects of the fungus on all insects tested were less than 25 percent. Our results suggest that V. Lecanii is compatible with natural enemies of cabbage aphid and T. chilonis and is harmless to silk worm, therefore can be used for integrated management of cabbage aphid.

Coppens Diervoeding in Helmond wil insectenproducten gaan verwerken in veevoer voor pluimvee en varkens. Hiertoe heeft het bedrijf op 9 mei in het provinciehuis van Noord- Brabant in Den Bosch een overeenkomst ondertekend met insectenproducent Protix Biosystems in Dongen. Coppens is het eerste Nederlandse veevoerbedrijf dat insecten gaat gebruiken.

Bijen zijn zeer geschikt voor bestuiving van gewassen, vindt imker Gerard van de Braak. „Door kasten in een gewas te plaatsen, zijn er altijd bijen voor een goede bestuiving. Dit vergroot de kans op goede vruchtzetting en verhoogt de opbrengst van het gewas.” Ook van hem is de stelling; "De negatieve media-aandacht voor bijen en bestrijdingsmiddelen is vaak onterecht"

Gedurende een driejarig veldonderzoek (PWO-project Hogeschool Gent) werd de invloed onderzocht van een gemengde haag en meerjarige bloemenrand op de aanwezigheid van plaag- (lindebladluis, lindebladwesp, roestmijten, …) en nuttige insecten/mijten in een perceel met lindebomen. Hiervoor werd ieder groeiseizoen vanaf eind april tweewekelijks op de laanbomen gezocht naar aanwezige insecten, spinnen en mijten. Om de natuurlijke populatieopbouw (fenologie) van de insecten, spinnen en mijten op te volgen werd gekozen om grijpen met gewasbeschermingsmiddelen. In dit onderstaand artikel vindt u enkele algemene resultaten van dit intensief veldonderzoek.

Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) werkt. Met dit instrument stimuleert de overheid onderzoek, ontwikkeling en start met de productie van innovatieve ideeën en toepassingen. Het stimuleringsprogramma nam vanaf 2009 het plan ‘Nieuwe en innovatieve eiwitten op het menu’ onder de hoede. En nu gaan Protix Biosystems BV en Coppens Diervoerders insecten inzetten voor vet en eiwitten.

Voor een duurzame beheersing van allerlei plagen en met oog op het veranderende middelenpakket, is het steeds meer van belang om de natuurlijke plaagbeheersing op een perceel te stimuleren. Dit is onder andere mogelijk door schuilen nestelgelegenheid voor natuurlijke vijanden te bieden in de omgeving van het perceel. In diverse tuinprogramma’s wordt regelmatig aandacht besteed aan een zogeheten ‘insectenhotel’. Kan een dergelijk bouwwerk de plaagonderdrukking op een perceel bevorderen?

In deze brochure wordt uitgelegd waarom insecten nuttig zijn, en welke soorten een rol spelen in het bestuivingsproces. Ook worden een aantal praktische voorstellen beschreven: om de bijen op het fruitbedrijf te ondersteunen kunnen telers bijvoorbeeld een bloemenweide of bloemenakker aanleggen, maar ook bomen en heggen en zogenaamde bijenhotels helpen de insecten vooruit.

Het bedrijf 'Biobest' is in 1987 opgericht om hommels te produceren voor de bestuiving van gewassen. Deze zo genaamde 'Flying Doctors' combineren twee elementen. Ze verspreiden een biologisch bestrijdingsmiddel terwijl ze bloemen bestuiven.

Beschrijving van Adalia bipunctata, oftewel het lieveheersbeestje, dat ingezet wordt bij de biologische bestrijding in de glastuinbouw tegen allerlei soorten bladluizen.

Door de invoering van de Europese richtlijn 2009/128/EC zijn boomkwekerijen verplicht om aan geïntegreerde gewasbescherming te doen. Eén van de basisprincipes hiervan is de preventie van schadelijke organismen. Het beschermen en bevorderen van nuttige insecten, van nature aanwezig in een ecosysteem, is hier een voorbeeld van. Naast natuurlijke plaagbeheersing kunnen deze nuttige insecten ook zorgen voor bestuiving of een bijdrage leveren aan de bodemvruchtbaarheid. Dit alles samen heet ‘functionele biodiversiteit’ en wordt gezien als een natuurlijke weerstand die steeds aanwezig is en waar de boomkweker/sierteler gratis gebruik kan van maken.

Om een beter inzicht te krijgen in de functionele biodiversiteit in de laanboomteelt startte in april 2011 een driejarig PWO-project genaamd “Functionele biodiversiteit van de Arthropoda, als basis voor de geïntegreerde gewasbescherming in de laanboomteelt”. Dit project van de Hogeschool Gent loopt in samenwerking met het PCS en ILVO. Studenten van de bachelor agro- en biotechnologie afstudeerrichtingen Groenmanagement en plantmanagement voeren samen met de lectoren en onderzoekers het onderzoek uit. In een eerste deel van het onderzoeksproject bepaalde men de biodiversiteit op laanbomen (zie vorig nummer). In het tweede luik van het onderzoek bekijkt men de impact van een bloemenrand en gemengde haag op de biodiversiteit.

Klimaatverandering en toenemende handelscontracten vergroten de kans op nieuwe insecten in de Nederlandse bos- en boomkwekerijsector: Sommige zijn betrekkelijk onschuldig, andere kunnen rampen veroorzaken, zoals de beruchte Oost-Aziatische boktor of de moerbeischildluis. Om nog maar niet te spreken van de essenprachtkever. "Het zal een keer gebeuren dat die binnenkomt, zegt Leen Moraal, insectenexpert bij het Wageningse Alterra.

Insecten, zeewier, eendenkroos of algen, het zijn stuk voor stuk eiwitbronnen die prima dienst zouden doen als veevoergrondstof. Op het eerste oog lijken ze merkwaardig, maar wie nagaat hoe hoog de eiwitgehalten zijn en hoe duurzaam de productiewijze, is snel enthousiast. De hamvraag is: wat doet de markt?

Dit boekje laat de minder opvallende, maar uiterst nuttige beestjes zien die u op en rond akkers tegen kunt komen. Iedereen kan deze groepen herkennen en actief inzetten voor natuurlijke plaagbeheersing.

The objectives of this study, conducted from 2005 to 2007, were (1) to assess the habitat quality of different hedgerow plants for insect natural enemies and pests, (2) to track the movement of insects from hedgerows into adjacent crop fields and (3) to test the effect of hedgerows on parasitism rates of an economically important pest, the cabbage looper (Trichoplusia ni). This study took place at four farms with hedgerows on the Central Coast of California.

Modificación al proceso de producción masiva de los parasitoides Catolaccus grandis y Catolaccus hunteri. El presente estudio se realizó con el objetivo de modificar la tecnología de producción masiva de Catolaccus grandis y Catolaccus hunteri, himenópteros parasitoides de Anthonomus grandis el picudo del algodonero en Tamaulipas, México en el 2002. Se determinó la eficiencia del papel toalla para el secado de manos, en el sellamiento de cápsulas moldeadas en cera de hidrocarburos y poliolefina (LCHP), donde se confina al huésped, y evaluar la efectividad del gorgojo del garbanzo Callosobruchus maculatus como hospedante facticio para la cría de ambos parasitoides. Hubo producción masiva de C. grandis y C. hunteri utilizando C. maculatus como huésped y el papel toalla fue efectivo para sellar los orificios de las cápsulas moldeadas en LCHP. La producción masiva de C. grandis y C. hunteri mediante C. maculatus, contribuyó a incrementar la seguridad y facilidad del proceso, además de una significativa reducción de costos. The objectives of this study, conducted from 2005 to 2007, were (1) to assess the habitat quality of different hedgerow plants for insect natural enemies and pests, (2) to track the movement of insects from hedgerows into adjacent crop fields and (3) to test the effect of hedgerows on parasitism rates of an economically important pest, the cabbage looper (Trichoplusia ni). This study took place at four farms with hedgerows on the Central Coast of California.

Modificación al proceso de producción masiva de los parasitoides Catolaccus grandis y Catolaccus hunteri. El presente estudio se realizó con el objetivo de modificar la tecnología de producción masiva de Catolaccus grandis y Catolaccus hunteri, himenópteros parasitoides de Anthonomus grandis el picudo del algodonero en Tamaulipas, México en el 2002. Se determinó la eficiencia del papel toalla para el secado de manos, en el sellamiento de cápsulas moldeadas en cera de hidrocarburos y poliolefina (LCHP), donde se confina al huésped, y evaluar la efectividad del gorgojo del garbanzo Callosobruchus maculatus como hospedante facticio para la cría de ambos parasitoides. Hubo producción masiva de C. grandis y C. hunteri utilizando C. maculatus como huésped y el papel toalla fue efectivo para sellar los orificios de las cápsulas moldeadas en LCHP. La producción masiva de C. grandis y C. hunteri mediante C. maculatus, contribuyó a incrementar la seguridad y facilidad del proceso, además de una significativa reducción de costos. Biologische bestrijding van plagen met natuurlijke vijanden komt in veel gewassen onvoldoende tot stand. De reden hiervoor is dat veel natuurlijke vijanden zich maar matig, of zelfs helemaal niet vestigen in een gewas in perioden met weinig voedsel. Dit rapport geeft de resultaten weer van een haalbaarheidsstudie naar de mogelijkheden om alternatief voedsel in te zetten voor ondersteuning van natuurlijke vijanden in de glastuinbouw. Daarbij hebben we ons beperkt tot generalistische roofmijten en roofwantsen. Literatuur laat zien dat er goede mogelijkheden zijn om predatoren op alternatieve voedselbronnen te kweken. Deze studies waren hoofdzakelijk gericht op de ontwikkeling van massakweken. Het ondersteunen van roofmijten en roofwantsen op gewassen met alternatief voedsel is een nog weinig beproefde methode, maar krijgt wereldwijd steeds meer aandacht. In dit onderzoek hebben we 16 voedselbronnen getest die waren in te delen in de categorie (1) alternatieve prooidieren, (2) (bijen)pollen en (3) kunstmatige voedselbronnen op basis van eiwitten, koolhydraten, suikers en vitamines. De voedselbronnen zijn zowel in het laboratorium als in de kas beoordeeld.De kasproeven lieten zien dat er mogelijkheden zijn om roofmijtpopulaties op gewassen te ondersteunen met goedkoop kunstmatig voedsel. De voedselbronnen waren in staat op chrysant dichtheden van 2 tot 4 roofmijten per blad in stand te houden. De tot nu toe onderzochte producten waren matig of niet geschikt voor reproductie. Literatuur laat zien dat alternatief voedsel veel mogelijkheden biedt voor het verbeteren van de biologische bestrijding, maar dat er ook risico¿s aan verbonden kunnen zijn. Ook dat laatste moet worden onderzocht. Er moet onderscheid worden gemaakt tussen substituut-voedsel, dat voedsel van een prooi volledig kan vervangen, en supplementair voedsel, dat voornamelijk de levensduur verlengt, maar niet geschikt is voor reproductie.
