Monitoring van ‘De Kier’ in het Haringvliet begon in 2018 met het vastleggen van de uitgangssituatie en de bemonstering wordt jaarlijks herhaald. In 2019 en 2020 werd al een nieuw raderdier, Polyarthra luminosa, voor de Nederlandse fauna opgemerkt en in 2021 werd ook Eurytemora carolleeae aangetroffen, een recent in Nederland verschenen exotisch roeipootkreeftje. Zeer verrassend is het aantreffen in 2021 van Eubosmina berolinensis, een watervlo die haar verspreidingsgebied heeft rond het zuidoosten van de Oostzee. Eubosmina berolinensis is een nieuwe soort voor de Nederlandse fauna.

The specimen studied was collected at the mouth of the torrent of Na Borges, in the north of the island of Mallorca, located inside a Site of Community Importance (SCI). It is a decapod crustacean typical of estuarine environments, very common in the European Atlantic but uncommon on the Iberian Mediterranean coasts.

Modderkreeften (familie Ilyocryptidae) zijn een groep van bodembewonende watervlooien. De Bossche modderkreeft Ilyocryptus silvaeducensis is Nederlands enige endemische kieuwpootkreeft. Een naaste verwant van deze soort, de bronmodderkreeft Ilyocryptus alexandrinae, is recentelijk in het Mosterdveen bij Epe en in een ven op de Vughtse heide aangetroffen. Dit zijn de eerste vondsten in Nederland.

Het oranje-blauw zwemmend geraamte Eubranchipus grubii is een zeldzame kieuwpootkreeft waarvan gedacht werd dat deze in Nederland was uitgestorven. De laatste decennia werden echter incidenteel nieuwe waarnemingen gedaan, onder meer in het IJsseldal in Gelderland en Het Groene Woud in Noord-Brabant. Recentelijk werd een onderzoek uitgevoerd naar het voorkomen van E. grubii in de leembossen van Het Groene Woud. Deze kieuwpootkreeft blijkt hier een grote populatie te herbergen, vooral in de zogenaamde rabatten. Dit is een oud systeem van gegraven sloten om bossen te ontwateren.

The Mediterranean bioregion is widely recognised as a biodiversity hotspot and its inland waters are among the species richest ecosystems of the northern hemisphere. However, the extent of such biodiversity has not been totally unravelled, especially in the Mediterranean islands. Here we present a first account of the crustaceans inhabiting 21 permanent and temporary ponds in Crete, the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. The ponds, sampled between 2009 and 2018, cover all the island surface even though their number cannot be considered exhaustive to represent the entire non-malacostracan fauna of the island. Nevertheless, 46 taxa were identified and most of them are new records for Crete. Moreover, molecular taxonomy allowed to solve the systematic position of Arctodiaptomus piliger Brehm, 1955 and to synonymize this organism, previously considered endemic of the island, with Arctodiaptomus alpinus (Imhof, 1885). As regard branchiopods, this paper contributes a step ahead to clarify the taxonomic position of the Mediterranean Chirocephalus and Ceriodaphnia species. Finally, a review of all the non-stygobitic species present on the island is reported, including 78 taxa (21 Branchiopoda, 28 Copepoda and 29 Ostracoda). Even though the whole-genome sequence is available and omics data have actively accumulated for this species, the available tools for analyzing gene function have thus far been limited to RNAi (RNA interference) and TALEN (the transcription activator-like effector nuclease) systems. The development of the CRISPR/Cas9 (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/CRISPR-associated 9) system is thus expected to further increase the genetic tractability of D.pulex and to advance the understanding of this species. In this study, we developed a genome editing system for D.pulex using CRISPR/Cas9 ribonucleoprotein complexes (Cas9 RNPs). We first assembled a CRISPR single-guide RNA (sgRNA) specific to the Distal-less gene (Dll), which encodes a homeodomain transcription factor essential for distal limb development in invertebrates and vertebrates. Then, we injected Cas9 RNPs into eggs and evaluated its activity in vivo by a T7 endonuclease I assay. Injected embryos showed defective formation of the second antenna and disordered development of appendages, and indel mutations were detected in Dll loci, indicating that this technique successfully knocked out the target gene.

Het inzicht in de verspreiding van de kieuwpootkreeften in Nederland is de afgelopen jaren sterk toegenomen. In een recent boek over de Nederlandse biodiversiteit stond een tussenstand op basis van 12.500 waarnemingen. Het aantal waarnemingen is inmiddels gestegen tot ruim 62.000. Dit artikel geeft de status van alle Nederlandse soorten, op basis van een analyse van het waarnemingenbestand.

Recent studies have clarified the segmental organization of appendicular and exoskeletal structures in the anterior region of Cambrian stem-group Euarthropoda, and thus led to better understanding of the deep evolutionary origins of the head region in this successful animal group. However, there are aspects of the anterior organization of Palaeozoic euarthropods that remain problematic, such as the morphological identity and significance of minute limb-like projections on the anterior region in stem and crown-group representatives. Here, we draw attention to topological and morphological similarities between the frontal filaments of extant Crustacea and the embryonic frontal processes of Onychophora, and distinctive anterior paired projections observed in several extinct total-group Euarthropoda. Anterior paired projections are redescribed in temporally and phylogenetically distant fossil taxa, including the gilled lobopodians Kerygmachela kierkegaardi and Pambdelurion whittingtoni, the bivalved stem-euarthropod Canadaspis perfecta, the larval pycnogonid Cambropycnogon klausmuelleri, and the mandibulate Tanazios dokeron. Developmental data supporting the homology of the 'primary antennae' of Onychophora, the 'frontal appendages' of lower-stem Euarthropoda, and the hypostome/labrum complex of Deuteropoda, argue against the morphological identity of the anterior paired projections of extant and extinct panarthropods as a pair of pre-ocular appendages. Instead, we regard the paired projections of fossil total-group euarthropods as non-appendicular evaginations with a likely protocerebral segmental association, and a possible sensorial function. The widespread occurrence of preocular paired projections among extant and extinct taxa suggests their potential homology as fundamentally ancestral features of the anterior body organization in Panarthropoda. The Devonian (419-359 million years ago) is the geological period when the terrestrial biota fully established. Early representatives from a terrestrial and continental aquatic biota have previously been reported from the Upper Devonian (Famennian) Strud quarry in Belgium, in the shape of seed-bearing plants and vertebrates (fish and early tetrapods). The palaeoenvironment is interpreted as a floodplain with slow accumulation of sediment in the river channels and adjacent shallow pools, subject to seasonal flooding and desiccation. This thesis presents the upper Famennian Strud ecosystem with representatives from the largest animal phylum – the Arthropoda. Pancrustaceans are dominating the arthropod assemblage by two eumalacostracans (previously described), three groups of branchiopods, and a putative insect, all collected in fine shales likely deposited in the shallow pools. The branchiopods from Strud comprise new members from all three extant clades, i.e. notostracans, anostracans, and spinicaudatan diplostracans. The notostracan Strudops goldenbergi is remarkable for its close resemblance with the extant genus Triops by the overall body plan and telson morphology. A phylogenetic analysis including modern and extinct notostracans and anostracans was performed, where Strudops appears as the earliest undisputed notostracan ever found. In addition, new genera of Anostraca (Haltinnaias serrata) and Spinicaudata (Gesvestheria pernegrei) are described herein. The insect Strudiella devonica consists of a single specimen and is interpreted to have been a nymph due to its minute size and wingless appearance. The presence of the large branchiopod Triops cancriformis (Bosc, 1801-1802) in Cyprus is reported for the first time. Triops cancriformis individuals were observed in the large temporary wetland of Paralimni Lake (Famagusta District, Cyprus) during the wet periods of 2013 and 2014. This finding extends the current knowledge of the species distribution in the eastern Mediterranean area and stresses the ecological and conservation value of the unique habitat of Paralimni Lake. In addition, it highlights the need to conduct further studies on the fauna of temporary pond habitats in Cyprus and the need to implement better conservation management strategies for this EU priority habitat., Se reporta por primera vez, la presencia del braquiópodo Triops cancriformis (Bosc, 1801-1802) en Chipre. Se detectaron individuos de T.cancriformis en el gran humedal temporal del lago Paralimni (Distrito de Famagusta, Chipre) durante los períodos de lluvia de 2013 y 2014. Este hallazgo amplía el conocimiento actual de la distribución de esta especie en el área del Mediterráneo oriental, y hace hincapié en el valor ecológico y la conservación del hábitat singular del lago Paralimni. Además, pone de relieve la necesidad de seguir estudiando la fauna de lagunas temporales en Chipre con el objetivo de mejorar su gestión para la conservación de dichos hábitats catalogados como prioritarios de la UE.

Recente ontdekkingen van verschillende populaties geven nu echter aan dat dit niet het geval is en dat deze unieke, primitieve kreeftachtigen nog steeds aanwezig zijn. Alleen rijst nu de vraag of er voor deze bijzondere diergroep nog wel een toekomst is in de lage landen.

Binnen deze groep zijn twee vormen te onderscheiden, vijf centimer grote trilobietachtige kreeften met een groot schild en slanke, kleurrijke garnaalachtige dieren, die met de buikzijde omhoog zwemmen. Ze zijn beide aangepast aan het leven in een bijzonder biotoop: tijdelijke watertjes, zoals karresporen en snel opdrogende poelen. Ze komen al 200 miljoen jaar in onveranderde vorm voor en behoren tot de oudst levende soorten op aarde.

Zeven jaar na het verschijnen van de naamlijst van de Nederlandse kieuwpootkreeften is het tijd voor een aanvulling. Er zijn ontwikkelingen op het gebied van de taxonomie van Bosmina en enkele soorten kunnen aan de lijst worden toegevoegd. De vorige naamlijst verscheen 15 jaar na een eerdere lijst en voegde toen 11 soorten watervlooien toe.
