1. Tree tracking: species selection and traceability for sustainable and biodiversity-friendly urban reforestation

Abstract

The current climate change and increasing climate variability represent a serious global challenge that demands urgent responses. Among the multiple actions that should be taken, afforestation and reforestation are the most common strategies. The current paper aims to assess the potential of tree species to be used in urban forestry in the Po Plain ecoregional province (Northern Italy) using DNA barcoding approach for plant traceability and ecophysiological indexes (shade, drought and waterlogging) for plant selection. DNA barcoding markers results showed a 55.5% of success, but the power of discrimination increased to 94.5% when considering only the autochthonous ecoregional species pool. Concerning ecophysiological markers, Fagus sylvatica, Abies alba, Picea abies and Taxus baccata were very shade-tolerant. The best performing trees concerning drought tolerance were oak species (Quercus ilex, Q. pubescens and Q. cerris), pines (Pinus pinea, P. nigra and P. sylvestris) and Fraxinus ornus. Only a few tree species (Salix alba, Alnus glutinosa, Populus nigra and Prunus padus) showed high tolerance to waterlogging. The combination of both approaches makes it possible to select the most suitable species, based on eco-pedological and microclimatic conditions, and to trace their identity along the entire supply chain, from nursery to planting, for urban forestry.

Abstract

Italy has a rich natural heritage, which is dangerously under pressure. In recent years, there is an increased awareness of the crucial role of plants in ecosystem functioning and in providing ecosystem services. Consequently, an updated Red List of the Italian vascular flora was compiled in this work, at the request of the Ministry for Environment, Land and Sea Protection, with the scientific support of the Italian Botanical Society. The IUCN Red List criteria were applied to 2,430 Italian native vascular plant taxa to assess their current extinction risk and to highlight the major threats affecting the Italian flora. Our results revealed that 54 taxa (2.2% of the assessed taxa) are extinct or possibly extinct at regional level, while 590 taxa (24.3%) were assigned to a risk category. Moreover, 404 taxa (16.6%) were categorized as Data Deficient. The Italian vascular flora is primarily threatened by habitat modifications due to anthropic disturbance and, especially, to agriculture, tourism and residential development. Coastal areas and lowlands, where anthropogenic impacts and ecosystem destruction are more pronounced, host the greatest number of extinct or declining taxa. Our results represent an important baseline to establish conservation priorities, legislative choices and intervention strategies on a national scale.

Abstract

In most terrestrial ecosystems, plant growth is limited by nitrogen and phosphorus. Adding either nutrient to soil usually affects primary production, but their effects can be positive or negative. Here we provide a general stoichiometric framework for interpreting these contrasting effects. First, we identify nitrogen and phosphorus limitations on plants and soil microorganisms using their respective nitrogen to phosphorus critical ratios. Second, we use these ratios to show how soil microorganisms mediate the response of primary production to limiting and non-limiting nutrient addition along a wide gradient of soil nutrient availability. Using a meta-analysis of 51 factorial nitrogen-phosphorus fertilization experiments conducted across multiple ecosystems, we demonstrate that the response of primary production to nitrogen and phosphorus additions is accurately predicted by our stoichiometric framework. The only pattern that could not be predicted by our original framework suggests that nitrogen has not only a structural function in growing organisms, but also a key role in promoting plant and microbial nutrient acquisition. We conclude that this stoichiometric framework offers the most parsimonious way to interpret contrasting and, until now, unresolved responses of primary production to nutrient addition in terrestrial ecosystems.

Abstract

Taxa endemic to a country are key elements for setting national conservation priorities and for driving conservation strategies, since their persistence is entirely dependent on national policy. We applied the IUCN Red List categories to all Italian endemic vascular plants (1340 taxa) to assess their current risk of extinction and to highlight their major threats. Our results revealed that six taxa are already extinct and that 22.4% (300 taxa) are threatened with extinction, while 18.4% (247; especially belonging to apomictic groups) have been categorized as Data Deficient. Italian endemic vascular plants are primarily threatened by natural habitat modification due to agriculture, residential and tourism development. Taxa occurring in coastal areas and lowlands, where anthropogenic impacts and habitat destruction are concentrated, display the greatest population decline and extinction. The national network of protected areas could be considered effective in protecting endemic-rich areas (ERAs) and endemic taxa, but ineffective in protecting narrow endemic-rich areas (NERAs), accordingly changes to the existing network may increase the effectiveness of protection. For the first time in the Mediterranean Basin biodiversity hotspot, we present a comprehensive extinction assessment for endemic plants under the full responsibility of a single country. This would provide an important step towards the prioritization and conservation of threatened endemic flora at Italian, European, and Mediterranean level. A successful conservation strategy of the Italian endemic vascular flora should implement the protected area system, solve some taxonomical criticism in poorly known genera, and should rely on monitoring threatened species, and on developing species-specific action plans.

6. Conserving plant diversity in Europe: outcomes, criticisms and perspectives of the Habitats Directive application in Italy

Abstract

Habitat Directive is the core strategy of nature conservation in Europe aiming at halting biodiversity loss. In this study the results of the third Italian assessment regarding the conservation status (CS) of plants listed in the Habitat Directive (Flora of community interest—FCI) was presented. Data was collected from several sources related to plant distribution, population data, habitats and pressures. Following the official European procedure, all parameters were evaluated and combined to give the CS of each taxon in each biogeographical region of presence. A comparison between the recent Italian IUCN and Reporting assessments was performed in order to evaluate the consistency between these two assessments. The official EU checklist comprises 113 Italian plant taxa, 107 of which were examined in this study. Our results showed a critical situation with only 34% of favourable CS, while 50% were unfavourable (40% inadequate plus 10% bad) and 16% unknown, in particular in the Mediterranean bioregion, where the unfavourable assessments reach the 65%. The results of the Report were consistent with those of the IUCN assessment, in which 41.9% of plants were threatened with extinction. This report highlighted some benefits and criticisms at national level, but it may have a wider significance. Although a general advance of knowledge, a great effort is needed to reach the Habitats Directive goals. Despite the limited resources, monitoring activities needs to be improved in order to close information gaps for several plants. A positive outcome was the development of a specific national project funded by the Italian Ministry of Environment, with the ambitious target to set future monitoring activities for FCI and optimize monitoring efforts.

We assessed the conservation status of Italian policy species, based on the IUCN categories and criteria, to evaluate the effectiveness of existing protection measures at the national level. Among the 203 vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens evaluated, 41.9% are categorized as threatened, and one is already extinct, indicating that the protection measures for policy species are inadequate. Our results for the Italian policy species are consistent with those of an assessment at the EU level. Conservation priorities should be established at both the national and regional scales. An effective conservation strategy is needed, and in situ and ex situ actions focused on threatened species should be promoted.

Our results for the Italian policy species are consistent with those of an assessment at the EU level. Conservation priorities should be established at both the national and regional scales. An effective conservation strategy is needed, and in situ and ex situ actions focused on threatened species should be promoted.

Abstract

A better knowledge of the fatigue could be of the greatest importance for the high-grade glioma (HGG) patients, who are a unique and vulnerable population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and the predictors of the fatigue in HGG patients, using a specific fatigue scale. The study was designed as a cross-sectional study. The study population included sixty-seven consecutive outpatients with HGG. We used these measures: Brief Fatigue Inventory, Karnofsky Performance Scale, Functional Independence Measure, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale and Psychological Distress Inventory and SF-36, EORTC QLQ-30 and EORTC QLQ-BN20 for quality of life (QoL). Sixteen out of sixty-seven (23.9 %) patients were affected by Anaplastic Astrocytoma and 51/67 (76.1 %) by Glioblastoma Multiforme. About one-third (36.2 %) of patients had a clinically relevant fatigue (Brief Fatigue Inventory ≥3). In regression analysis, physical and mental aspects of QoL were statistically significant related with fatigue (p < 0.01 and p < 0.02, respectively). Our data underlined the relevant occurrence of fatigue in HGG patients and support the development of further studies exploring a tailored rehabilitation program.

15. Influence of torrefaction on the devolatilization and oxidation kinetics of wood

Abstract

Devolatilization and oxidation kinetics of torrefied wood have been studied by evaluating thermogravimetric curves measured in nitrogen and air at various heating rates. Samples consist of Norway spruce wood chips torrefied at several process temperatures and residence times. Data about untreated wood have also been obtained for comparison. Measured curves are well predicted by means of a five-reaction mechanism, consisting of three devolatilization reactions for the pseudo-components hemicellulose. cellulose and lignin and, in air, of two additional reactions for char devolatilization and combustion. The torrefaction pre-treatment only requires model modifications in the amounts of volatiles generated from the decomposition of pseudo-components, indicating that only their relative percentages and not their reactivities are modified. On the other hand, a slightly different thermal stability is found for the char generated from torrefied wood, which results in higher activation energy and lower reaction order for the oxidation step. Hence torrefaction conditions can affect the subsequent conversion characteristics of the char product. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Molecular analysis of the LAMA2 gene revealed two previously un-described mutations. The patient achieved independent sitting at age 2, but lost head balance at age 7; he was never able to stand unsupported. Cerebral magnetic resonance imaging revealed diffuse hypomyelination in both cerebral hemispheres; electrophysiological assessment revealed progressive sensorimotor axonal polyneuropathy. Investigation of the primary molecular defect in congenital muscular dystrophy patients is important for genetic counseling, because the clinical features of the various forms overlap, and because significant laminin alpha2 chain reduction may occur in patients with primary defects in other genes.
