In recent years, various initiatives from within and outside the HCI field have encouraged researchers to improve research ethics, openness, and transparency in their empirical research. We quantify how the CHI literature might have changed in these three aspects by analyzing samples of 118 CHI 2017 and 127 CHI 2022 papers---randomly drawn and stratified across conference sessions. We operationalized research ethics, openness, and transparency into 45 criteria and manually annotated the sampled papers. The results show that the CHI 2022 sample was better in 18 criteria, but in the rest of the criteria, it has no improvement. The most noticeable improvements were related to research transparency (10 out of 17 criteria). We also explored the possibility of assisting the verification process by developing a proof-of-concept screening system. We tested this tool with eight criteria. Six of them achieved high accuracy and F1 score. We discuss the implications for future research practices and education. Objective: To examine the association between fish and shellfish intake and diabetes in an island population. Design: Cross-sectional. Setting: Two independent population-based field surveys conducted in Hvar Island of the eastern Adriatic coast of Croatia in May 2007 and May 2008. Subjects: A total of 1,379 adults participated. Results: In multivariable logistic regression models, total fish intake was positively associated with diabetes prevalence in the total population (OR Q4 vs Q1 = 1.64; 95% CI = 1.01-2.66; p-trend = 0.09). Oily fish intake also exhibited a positive association with diabetes prevalence in the total population (OR Q4 vs Q1 = 2.22; 95% CI = 1.35-3.64; p-trend = 0.01) and in analyses stratified by body mass index, males and those with a high waist circumference. Conclusions: The study suggests an association between oily fish intake and diabetes in the population of the Hvar Island in Croatia. Longitudinal studies incorporating measures of persistent organic pollutants and local cooking practices are warranted to identify factors in fatty fish that may influence the development or persistence of diabetes.

Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) are an important class of compound used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, targeting the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ). Drug-induced hepatotoxicity, edema, and weight gain are the main concerns associated with TZDs. It was unclear whether the side effects observed are target mediated or compound mediated, but most of the TZDs activate PPARγ. This obliged developing of a new diverse class of ligands as antihyperglycemic agents including non-TZD PPAR ligands that could be highly effective, safe, and devoid of side effects. Here, we report the design and synthesis of N-(5-chloro-6-((1-phenylpiperidin-4-yl)oxy)pyridin-3-yl) benzenesulfonamide derivatives as non-TZD PPARγ modulators. © Springer Science+Business Media 2013.

Metabolic syndrome is a widely prevalent multifactorial disorder associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. High plasma levels of insulin and glucose due to insulin resistance are a major component of the metabolic disorder. Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) are potent PPARγ ligand and used as insulin sensitizers in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. They are potent insulin-sensitizing agents but due to adverse effects like hepatotoxicity, a safer alternative of TZDs is highly demanded. Here we report synthesis of N-(6-(4-(piperazin-1-yl)phenoxy)pyridin-3-yl)benzenesulfonamide derivatives as an alternate remedy for insulin resistance.

Adriatic islanders have a high prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) although they have traditionally practiced an active lifestyle and adhered to a Mediterranean diet. We performed a cross-sectional study to identify dietary patterns in a sample of 1442 adults from the island of Hvar, and determined whether MetS and its components: waist-circumference, serum triglycerides, fasting plasma glucose, HDL-cholesterol, and blood pressure, were related to an altered pattern of the traditional Mediterranean diet. Dietary intake was assessed by a food frequency questionnaire. MetS was defined using the International Diabetes Federation criteria. Our study showed that dietary patterns in this population have diversified from the traditional diet. Principal component analysis identified three major patterns. The meat, alcohol, and fish pattern (MAFp), sweets, grains, and fats pattern (SGFp), and an olive-oil, vegetables, and fruits pattern (OVFp) explained 30.6% of total dietary variance. The MAFp associated significantly with MetS (p=0.027) and high plasma glucose (p=0.006).

This paper presents the first scientific investigation on the musical pillars of the Vitthala Temple at Hampi, India. The solid stone columns in these pillars produce audible sound, when struck with a finger. Systematic investigations on the acoustic characteristics of the musical pillars of mahamandapam (great stage) of the Vitthala Temple have been carried out. The 11 most popular pillars that produce sounds of specific musical instruments are considered for the investigations. The sound produced from these 11 most popular musical pillars was recorded systematically and different nondestructive testing techniques such as low frequency ultrasonic testing, impact echo testing, and in situ metallography were employed on the musical columns of these pillars. The peak frequencies in the amplitude spectrum of the sound produced from various columns in these pillars are correlated with the dimensional measurements and ultrasonic velocity determined using impact echo technique. The peak frequencies obtained experimentally have been found to have excellent correlation with the calculated flexural frequencies based on the dimensional measurements and ultrasonic velocities of the columns.

An RF scattering model which is consistent with existing IVORY CORAL and PRAIRIE SMOKE experimental measurements has been developed for the 'on frequency' signal component scattered from the heater induced ionospheric irregularities. The model is intended primarily for scatter communications systems application and further to aid in the theoretical and experimental efforts to understand the heater-ionosphere interaction phenomenon. The model presented here is based on the theory of weak scattering (Born approximation) developed by Booker for the case of anisotropic field aligned Gaussian irregularities. The characteristics of the irregularities in the heated volume are specified generally by a two dimensional Gaussian autocorrelation function having a scale size T transverse to the magnetic field and a scale size L along the field. The model predictions were found to match well with the observed radar cross-sections.

peer-reviewed, Effective desymmetrization in copper-catalyzed intramolecular C–H insertion reactions of α-diazo-β-oxosulfones in the formation of fused thiopyran dioxides is described for the first time. The use of a copper–bis(oxazoline)–NaBARF catalyst complex system leads to formation of the major thiopyran dioxide stereoisomer with up to 98:2 dr and up to 98% ee. The effect of varying the bis(oxazoline) ligand, copper salt, and site of C–H insertion on both diastereo- and enantioselectivities of these intramolecular C–H insertion reactions has been investigated. Similarly, desymmetrization in the formation of a fused cyclopentanone proceeds with up to 64% ee. These results represent the highest enantioselectivity reported to date in a copper-mediated desymmetrization through C–H insertion.
