1. Catalytic promiscuity of unspecific peroxygenases

Abstract: This thesis describes multiple synthetic applications of the recombinantly expressed (in Pichia pastoris host) Agrocybe aegerita unspecific peroxygenase (rAaeUPO). Chapter One gives a description of the existing enzymatic and chemocatalytic methodologies, which allow the direct oxidation of non-activated sp3 C-H positions. In Chapter Two, the optimal operating conditions of rAaeUPO-catalysed reactions were studied, including the effect of substrate concentration, temperature, mode of H2O2 delivery and enzyme concentration. Building on these benchmarking studies, the oxidation of a variety of N�heterocycles were optimised for improved yields, mostly focusing on analogues of pyridine and tetrahydroquinolines. N-heterocyclic benzylic alcohols were generally yielded with high enantioselectivities. The optimised conditions also allowed the transformations to be performed on synthetically useful scales (few hundred milligrams). In Chapter Three, the potential carbene and nitrene insertion activities of rAaeUPO were explored. In our hands, this enzyme failed to support any of these transformations under the conditions employed. The possible reasons of this are described and discussed. Chapter Four describes the application of rAaeUPO for catalysing the oxidation of furan analogues. Direct oxidation of alkyl-substituted furans, followed by the Achmatowicz reaction of the product formed was not possible under the conditions used. On the other hand, the rAaeUPO-mediated oxidative ring expansion of a wide range of α-furylcarbinols and α�furylamine analogues was possible with high yields. The enzyme was also shown to tolerate high substrate concentrations, thereby making the approach easy to scale. In Chapter Five, the oxidation of ethylbenzenes, toluenes and the corresponding secondary and primary alcohols was studied first to understand the electronic, steric, and energetic factors influencing these oxidations. Whilst rAaeUPO is known to mediate benzylic oxidation with high enantioselectivity, the enzyme did not discriminate strongly between the secondary alcohol enantiomers. The Chapter also describes the oxidation of more complex benzylic and allylic aliphatic alcohols.

2. Using multi-modal MRI techniques to measure glymphatic function in-vivo

Abstract: Background: The brain lacks conventional lymphatic vessels, however it has its own macroscopic waste clearance system, which is called the glymphatic system. It utilizes perivascular tunnels surrounded by astroglia cells and promote cerebrospinal-interstitial fluid exchange. Rodent studies have suggested that glymphatic system is active during sleep. Imaging the glymphatic system without a contrast agent is a challenging task. Aims: I propose that glymphatic system related changes can be detected with non-invasive MRI techniques sensitive to fluid motion (diffusion weighted MRI) and changes in intra-, extracellular volume fraction (sodium MRI) by comparing acquisitions obtained during wake and sleep. Methods: 21 healthy young participants (6 females, 22.3 ± 3.2 years) were scanned in two separate sessions, after a night of normal sleep and after a full night of sleep deprivation. In the sleep deprivation session participants also received 10mg of Zolpidem to increase the chance of falling asleep in the scanner. Multiple MRI modalities were acquired: sodium, high resolution anatomical, diffusion weighted and arterial spin labelling (ASL) images. Results and discussion: Physiological recordings and questionnaires indicated that participants were able to achieve sleep in the scanner. ASL indicated reduced cerebral blood flow (CBF) during sleep session, which was in line published literature. Sodium MRI indicated increased sodium signal during sleep, which might be due to glymphatic system related expansion in extracellular space. Although, sodium data is likely to be compromised by technical issues. Significant changes in diffusion were observed during sleep (decrease in diffusion kurtosis), which was in line with the hypothesized increase glymphatic function during sleep. Conclusion: My study highlighted the issues with acquiring and quantifying sodium MRI data during sleep. In future studies one should acquire higher order diffusion weighted data and measure diffusion kurtosis as it shows better sensitivity to glymphatic system related changes than classical diffusion measures.

3. In-between futures : urban transformation in an East Ukrainian frontline city

Abstract: Mariupol is a city of half a million inhabitants near the South Eastern border of Ukraine. A centre of Soviet steel industry in the larger part of the 20th century, the city found itself on the periphery of the new Ukrainian state after 1991, facing multiple layers of marginalization and economic stagnation in the following three decades. However, unlike many other localities in the postsocialist region, Mariupol did not experience a total collapse of industrial production, as both of the local steel plants continued their operation within the frameworks of a newly formulating market capitalism. The combination of these factors created a specific dynamic of continuity and change in the city during the first decades of postsocialist transformation. Despite the momentous and often traumatic experiences caused by the disintegration of the Soviet system and the resulting political and economic uncertainty, a significant part of the material and institutional infrastructure has been maintained in a relatively unchanged form. The outbreak of the Donbas war and the temporary takeover of Mariupol by the separatist forces of the Donetsk People's Republic in 2014 presented a turning point in this timeline, forcing government authorities as well as local inhabitants to reconsider the future trajectory of the city. With the occupation of large parts of the Donbas region by separatist militia, Mariupol obtained strategic importance for the Ukrainian state as an outpost of independent Ukraine near the war zone. Added by the presence of humanitarian organizations in the city as a reaction to the conflict, Mariupol experienced a wave of external interest and financial resources unprecedented in the post-1991 period. In addition to these changes, the urban administration ruling in the city since the 1990s had been replaced by a new group of politicians coming from the managerial circles of the steel factories. Combined together, the above factors facilitated a multi-layered urban transformation, challenging the status quo of the previous decades and opening up new temporal horizons in a place of long term decay and stagnation. Based on the material collected during 11 months of fieldwork in Mariupol, my dissertation explores how the residents experience this period of intense social change by investigating their temporal reasonings and everyday practices directed to various spheres of urban life. Looking at the way they approach different aspects of the contemporary urban ensemble in a Soviet-planned industrial city, I show how the material and cultural legacy of the Soviet period is being preserved, rejected or reinvented by different categories of locals. Exploring how the future of Mariupol is being negotiated in the administrative, personal and economic spheres, I ask how the teleological and material foundations of the Soviet city are being readjusted among the contemporary economic and political conditions. Addressing the Donbas war, and the military violence of 2014 in particular as a 'critical event' (Das 1996), I ask how the shifting geopolitical fault lines of the post-Cold War world manifest themselves in the lives of residents in a post-Soviet borderland. The dissertation demonstrates how this moment of re-evaluation prompted by the war leads to the reconfiguration of local temporal horizons.

4. Essays on biased innovation and environmental policy

Abstract: The thesis comprises of three essays aimed at enhancing our understanding of the relationship of environmental policy, firms’ innovation and efficiency. In the first essay, we examine the direction of innovation in the U.S. metal industry with data envelopment analysis and how is it affected by the change in the price of fossil fuels. We provide evidence that there was a environmentally-biased innovation and it was driven by the expectations of energy prices. In the second essay, we examine the effect of environmental policy on efficiency state-level manufacturing in the U.S. We use instrumental variables to control for simultaneous causality and find that stringent policy enhanced the efficiency of the manufacturing sectors. In the third essay, we examine the Climate Change Levy on firms operating in four manufacturing sectors in the U.K. Our results show that Climate Change Levy increased efficiency.

5. Combustion of alternative fuels : opto-mechanical design and optical investigation

Abstract: There is a considerable body of work based on observations and measurements obtained from optically accessible high pressure reactors, such as piston engines and constant volume combustion chambers. However, there are still important aspects of design and relevant information regarding optical access that are missing or are insufficiently explored or not readily accessible in the existing literature. A comprehensive review of requirements for optical access to such high-pressure, high-temperature systems has been conducted. It is presented in a readily navigable format, with data and technical correlations hitherto not found in a 'user-friendly' style, along with a comparison of optical materials, relevant properties and guidelines for application. It was found that optical materials often have sufficient mechanical strength, but that there were limiting factors of design, namely: working temperature, required electro-magnetic (EM) wave range and cyclic loading. It is especially difficult to carry out accurate design with cyclic loading as in a running engine, as the relevant data for optical materials is lacking in the literature. As a result of the significant uncertainty arising from inconsistency of design data, it is found that a safety factor is required, between two and five, depending on the probability of failure and associated risk. The opto-mechanical design process of pressure vessels is shown in detail for two real case- studies: a high-pressure steady-flow combustor Abstract v and the combustion chamber of a spark ignition engine. The latter system is then adopted and utilised for further diagnostic analysis. Utilising the optical access, a high-speed imaging system was used to record the ignition and flame kernel formation in the internal combustion engine. A range of fuels were investigated, including gasoline, isooctane, and a few alternative renewable fuels: E85, M85, and hydrogen. The experiments were conducted at stoichiometric conditions for the liquid fuels and ��=0.67 for hydrogen at various engine speeds and compression ratios. A novel analysing method was proposed to process the acquired raw optical data, where ellipses, rather than conventional spheres, were fitted onto image projections of the visible light emitted by the flames. A cross-comparison of the results with the available data from the literature was also conducted. The large amount of optical data allowed the statistical evaluation of the flame area, flame speed and a flame-shape descriptor. The image analysis showed that the ellipse fitting method provided a 50-100 % better fit and thus allowed a more accurate description of the flame propagation properties. The results indicated that gasoline and isooctane had similar flame propagation behaviour, but a significant difference was observed between these fuels and E85, M85 and hydrogen. Similarities were found between the propagation characteristics of M85 and hydrogen, showing the fastest Abstract vi propagating flames among all the fuels. The statistical analysis found that the precision of the flame speed measurement and the roundness of the flames increase with the engine speed, compression ratio, and time elapsed after ignition.

6. At the service of the state : Soviet-Afghan War veterans in Tajikistan, 1979-1992

Abstract: The thesis focuses on Soviet-Afghan War veterans (shorthanded afgantsy) in Tajikistan, a small mountainous republic that shares with Afghanistan both a 1300-kilometre border and close linguistic, ethnic, cultural and religious ties. It seeks to write the veterans into socio-economic and political developments in Tajikistan in the late Soviet period and, in doing so, to explore the veterans’ involvement with institutions and discourses of state power in an era that saw considerable political change both in Tajikistan and in the Soviet Union more widely. Drawing on interviews with a large number of veterans and documentary sources that have not previously been subjected to academic study, it argues that, far from challenging the Tajikistanis’ attachment to Soviet state structures and discourses, service in the Afghan War reinforced this attachment in important ways. The dynamics of irregular warfare widened the cleavage between Tajik troops and Afghan civilians despite cultural and other links and brought Soviet soldiers into mutual dependency that crossed cultural boundaries. After their service, the afgantsy were made an object of official policy and drawn into state institutions that promoted a collective afgantsy identity enmeshed with state discourses. State bodies reactivated rhetoric that was familiar to the afgantsy from their adolescence and fostered a public identity that gave them collective agency in a situation of geographic and socio-cultural fragmentation. The state co-optation seems to have been effective and defined veteran activism even in the politically more pluralist perestroika era. The close connection between state and veterans set the stage for the latter’s political fragmentation in the early 1990s, when state decline robbed the afgantsy of organisational strength and discursive cohesion. The Afghan War, by and large, was not a radicalising force but had important conservative effects on soldiers who depended on official sponsorship for group cohesion, political recognition and material support.

7. Immune cell infiltrate in ductal carcinoma in situ and the risk of dying from breast cancer : case-control study

Abstract: Background: Studies identifying risk factors for death from breast cancer after ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) are rare. In this retrospective nested case-control study, clinicopathological factors in women treated for DCIS and who died from breast cancer were compared with those of patients with DCIS who were free from metastatic disease. Methods: The study included patients registered with DCIS without invasive carcinoma in Sweden between 1992 and 2012. This cohort was linked to the National Cause of Death Registry. Of 6964 women with DCIS, 96 were registered with breast cancer as cause of death (cases). For each case, up to four controls (318; women with DCIS, alive and without metastatic breast cancer at the time of death of the corresponding case) were selected randomly by incidence density sampling. Whole slides of tumour tissue were evaluated for DCIS grade, comedo necrosis, and intensity of periductal lymphocytic infiltrate. Composition of the immune cell infiltrate, expression of oestrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, and proliferation marker Ki-67 were scored on tissue microarrays. Clinical information was obtained from medical records. Information on date, site, and histological characteristics of local and distant recurrences was obtained from medical records for both cases and controls. Results: Tumour tissue was analysed from 65 cases and 195 controls. Intense periductal lymphocytic infiltrate around DCIS was associated with an increased risk of later dying from breast cancer (OR 2.21. 95% c.i. 1.01 to 4.84). Tumours with more intense lymphocytic infiltrate had a lower T cell/B cell ratio. None of the other biomarkers correlated with increased risk of breast cancer death. Conclusion: The immune response to DCIS may influence the risk of dying from breast cancer.

Abstract: In psychological science, replicability—repeating a study with a new sample achieving consistent results (Parsons et al., 2022)—is critical for affirming the validity of scientific findings. Despite its importance, replication efforts are few and far between in psychological science with many attempts failing to corroborate past findings. This scarcity, compounded by the difficulty in accessing replication data, jeopardizes the efficient allocation of research resources and impedes scientific advancement. Addressing this crucial gap, we present the Replication Database (https://metaanalyses.shinyapps.io/replicationdatabase/), a novel platform hosting 1,239 original findings paired with replication findings. The infrastructure of this database allows researchers to submit, access, and engage with replication findings. The database makes replications visible, easily findable via a graphical user interface, and tracks replication rates across various factors, such as publication year or journal. This will facilitate future efforts to evaluate the robustness of psychological research.

11. Exact Spin Correlators of Integrable Quantum Circuits from Algebraic Geometry

Abstract: We calculate the correlation functions of strings of spin operators for integrable quantum circuits exactly. These observables can be used for calibration of quantum simulation platforms. We use algebraic Bethe Ansatz, in combination with computational algebraic geometry to obtain analytic results for medium-size (around 10-20 qubits) quantum circuits. The results are rational functions of the quantum circuit parameters. We obtain analytic results for such correlation functions both in the real space and Fourier space. In the real space, we analyze the short time and long time limit of the correlation functions. In Fourier space, we obtain analytic results in different parameter regimes, which exhibit qualitatively different behaviors. 12. Induced Periodontitis in Rats With Three Ligature Types : An Exploratory Study

Abstract: Background: The placement of ligatures in the cervical area of rat molars is considered as a predictable model to induce periodontitis. Objectives: The present explorative study aimed to compare the efficacy of metal wires (MWs), without or with sandblasting, versus silk ligatures (SLs) in inducing periodontal bone loss in rats. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups of eight rats that received three different types of ligatures (MW, sandblasted wire [SMW], and SL) around their first right mandibular molar, while the contralateral tooth was left without the ligature and served as a control. Bone loss was assessed by measuring the distance from the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) to the bone crest at the distal aspect of the first molar on central mesiodistal sections generated from micro-CT scans taken 24 and 35 days after ligature placement. Results: In the SL group, only in two rats the ligatures were retained until the end of the 24-day period; in all other animals, the ligatures were lost at some time point. In the SMW, the ligatures were retained only for the 24-day period. In the MW group, no ligatures were lost. Irrespective of the group or experimental period, the difference in the crestal bone level between ligated and control teeth was in most cases z < 0.20 mm, that is, in 19 out of 25 pairs of teeth. In a few cases, the bone crest was more apically located at the control teeth compared to the ligated ones (four cases each, during both 24- and 35-day experimental periods). Conclusions: Bone loss was minimal during the experimental period, with no significant differences between the test and control teeth, or among the three types of ligatures. MWs, not even roughened, do not seem to be a better alternative to SLs for inducing bone loss in the experimental periodontitis model in the rat. This assumption, however, has to be confirmed in a larger, well-powered study.

13. Connectivity between sea turtles off Jeju Island on the Korean Peninsula, and other populations in the western Pacific

Abstract: The northwestern Pacific region is an important habitat for sea turtles, hosting five species out of seven. There is still limited information available about the sea turtle aggregations around the Korean Peninsula, which is the northern boundary for many sea turtle species in the western Pacific area. The present study aims to investigate the migratory route of sea turtles visiting Jeju Island. Five species of sea turtles were identified from by-catch and stranding data between 2013 and 2022 on Jeju Island in Korea: green (Chelonia mydas; 24 individuals), loggerhead (Caretta caretta; 9), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata; 2), olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea; 2), and leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea; 1). Mixed stock analysis using mitochondrial DNA haplotypes revealed that Jeju green turtles primarily originate from the rookeries of the Japanese Archipelago. This connectivity between two regions was also supported by the similar genetic composition of loggerhead turtles. Similarly, satellite tracking data showed that several green turtles originating from Jeju Island migrated to waters near the Ryukyu Archipelago in Japan. Nevertheless, about 60% of the tracked green turtles stayed near Jeju Island, with most overwintering there, indicating the long residency in Jeju Island. This study also provides the genetic sequences of other three species including new orphan haplotypes of hawksbill and olive ridley turtles. Our findings suggest that Jeju Island serves as a stable foraging habitat and provide insight into understanding the habitat range of sea turtles in the western Pacific.

It has both somatic and psychosocial provoking factors and has both functional and psychological ramifications following childbirth. Pain that limits the functional capacity of a person who has the daunting task to take care of all the demands of managing a growing newborn and infant can have debilitating consequences for several people simultaneously. We will review the incidence of persistent postpartum pain, analyze the risk factors, and discuss obstetric, anesthetic, and psychological tools for prevention and management. Based on the current knowledge, early antenatal screening and management is described as the most likely measure to identify patients at risk for persistent postpartum pain. Abstract: The congruency sequence effect (CSE) is one of the most investigated effects in the cognitive control literature. The conflict monitoring theory suggests that the CSE is the result of adjustments in cognitive control based on perceived conflict. A recent paper by Zhang and colleagues, has investigated whether the manipulation of conflict level by changing distractor incompatibility in a flanker task affects the amount of adjustments in cognitive control. Their study produced mixed findings, somewhat supporting the original conflict monitoring theory, but also suggesting other explanations, such as the repetition expectancy account. We replicated the experimental design in a multisite online study (N = 347), with Hungarian, Italian, and Singaporean participants. Our results supported the prediction that changes in the level of conflict trigger conflict adaptation, revealing that increasing conflict levels induced stronger adaptive control. Bayesian hypothesis testing indicated a monotonic reduction in congruency effects as a function of previous conflict strength. This finding is in line with the extension of the traditional conflict monitoring theory, as well as other theories like affective signaling and expected value of control, implying that the relationship between conflict and interference effects is gradual, rather than a binary function.

16. Load-induced increase in muscle activity during 30° abduction in patients with rotator cuff tears and control subjects

Abstract: Background: Rotator cuff muscles stabilise the glenohumeral joint and contribute to the initial abduction phase with other shoulder muscles. This study aimed to determine if the load-induced increase in shoulder muscle activity during a 30° abduction test is influenced by asymptomatic or symptomatic rotator cuff pathologies. Materials and Methods: Twenty-five patients with unilateral rotator cuff tears (age, 64.3 ± 10.2 years), 25 older control subjects (55.4 ± 8.2 years) and 25 younger control subjects (26.1 ± 2.3 years) participated in this study. Participants performed a bilateral 30° arm abduction and adduction movement in the scapular plane with handheld weights (0–4 kg). Activity of the deltoid, infraspinatus, biceps brachii, pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi and upper trapezius muscles was analysed at maximum abduction angle after normalisation to maximum voluntary contraction. Shoulders were classified into rotator cuff tendinopathy, asymptomatic and symptomatic rotator cuff tears, and healthy based on magnetic resonance images. A linear mixed model (loads, shoulder types) with random effects (shoulder identification) was applied to the log-transformed muscle activities. Results: Muscle activity increased with increasing load in all muscles and shoulder types (P < 0.001), and 1-kg increments in additional weights were significant (P < 0.001). Significant effects of rotator cuff pathologies were found for all muscles analysed (P < 0.05). In all muscles, activity was at least 20% higher in symptomatic rotator cuff tears than in healthy shoulders (P < 0.001). Symptomatic rotator cuff tears showed 20–32% higher posterior deltoid (P < 0.05) and 19–25% higher pectoralis major (P < 0.01) activity when compared with asymptomatic tears. Abstract: Monochromatic gamma-ray signals constitute a potential smoking gun signature for annihilating or decaying dark matter particles that could relatively easily be distinguished from astrophysical or instrumental backgrounds. We provide an updated assessment of the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to such signals, based on observations of the Galactic centre region as well as of selected dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We find that current limits and detection prospects for dark matter masses above 300 GeV will be significantly improved, by up to an order of magnitude in the multi-TeV range. This demonstrates that CTA will set a new standard for gamma-ray astronomy also in this respect, as the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, in particular due to its exquisite energy resolution at TeV energies and the adopted observational strategy focussing on regions with large dark matter densities. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date instrument response functions, and we thoroughly model the effect of instrumental systematic uncertainties in our statistical treatment. Abstract: We present statistical analysis of visual meteor data taken with networks of meteor cameras operating in Hungary between 2020 and 2023. We use three different camera systems: a set of traditional MetRec-based video cameras, a self-developed automated DSLR camera system and a network of newly installed AllSky7 camera stations. 21. GammaBayes: a Bayesian pipeline for dark matter detection with CTA

Abstract: We present GammaBayes, a Bayesian Python package for dark matter detection with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). GammaBayes takes as input the CTA measurements of gamma rays and a user-specified dark-matter particle model. It outputs the posterior distribution for parameters of the dark-matter model including the velocity-averaged cross section for dark-matter self interactions $\langle\sigma v\rangle$ and the dark-matter mass $m_\chi$. It also outputs the Bayesian evidence, which can be used for model selection. We demonstrate GammaBayes using 525 hours of simulated data, corresponding to $10^8$ observed gamma-ray events. The vast majority of this simulated data consists of noise, but $100000$ events arise from the annihilation of scalar singlet dark matter with $m_\chi= 1$ TeV. We recover the dark matter mass within a 95% credible interval of $m_\chi \sim 0.96-1.07$ TeV. Meanwhile, the velocity averaged cross section is constrained to $\langle\sigma v\rangle \sim 1.4-2.1\times10^{-25}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1}$ (95% credibility). This is equivalent to measuring the number of dark-matter annihilation events to be $N_S \sim 1.1_{-0.2}^{+0.2} \times 10^5$. The no-signal hypothesis $\langle \sigma v \rangle=0$ is ruled out with about $5\sigma$ credibility. We discuss how GammaBayes can be extended to include more sophisticated signal and background models and the computational challenges that must be addressed to facilitate these upgrades. Having recently determined that aberrant death-ligand-induced cell death can cause lethal inflammation, we hypothesized that this process might also cause or contribute to inflammatory disease and lung failure following SARS-CoV-2 infection. To test this hypothesis, we developed a novel mouse-adapted SARS-CoV-2 model (MA20) that recapitulates key pathological features of COVID-19. Concomitantly with occurrence of cell death and inflammation, FasL expression was significantly increased on inflammatory monocytic macrophages and NK cells in the lungs of MA20-infected mice. Abstract: Background Coronary artery calcium (CAC) has prognostic value for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in asymptomatic individuals, whereas its role in symptomatic patients is less clear. Purpose To assess the prognostic value of CAC scoring for MACE in participants with stable chest pain initially referred for invasive coronary angiography (ICA). Materials and Methods This prespecified subgroup analysis from the Diagnostic Imaging Strategies for Patients With Stable Chest Pain and Intermediate Risk of Coronary Artery Disease (DISCHARGE) trial, conducted between October 2015 and April 2019 across 26 centers in 16 countries, focused on adult patients with stable chest pain referred for ICA. Participants were randomly assigned to undergo either ICA or coronary CT. CAC scores from noncontrast CT scans were categorized into low, intermediate, and high groups based on scores of 0, 1–399, and 400 or higher, respectively. The end point of the study was the occurrence of MACE (myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular death) over a median 3.5-year follow-up, analyzed using Cox proportional hazard regression tests. Results The study involved 1749 participants (mean age, 60 years ± 10 [SD]; 992 female). The prevalence of obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) at CT angiography rose from 4.1% (95% CI: 2.8, 5.8) in the CAC score 0 group to 76.1% (95% CI: 70.3, 81.2) in the CAC score 400 or higher group. Revascularization rates increased from 1.7% to 46.2% across the same groups (P < .001). Abstract: Importance The effectiveness and safety of computed tomography (CT) and invasive coronary angiography (ICA) in different age groups is unknown. Objective To determine the association of age with outcomes of CT and ICA in patients with stable chest pain. Design, Setting, and Participants The assessor-blinded Diagnostic Imaging Strategies for Patients With Stable Chest Pain and Intermediate Risk of Coronary Artery Disease (DISCHARGE) randomized clinical trial was conducted between October 2015 and April 2019 in 26 European centers. Patients referred for ICA with stable chest pain and an intermediate probability of obstructive coronary artery disease were analyzed in an intention-to-treat analysis. Data were analyzed from July 2022 to January 2023. Interventions Patients were randomly assigned to a CT-first strategy or a direct-to-ICA strategy. Main Outcomes and Measures MACE (ie, cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or stroke) and major procedure-related complications. The primary prespecified outcome of this secondary analysis of age was major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) at a median follow-up of 3.5 years. Results Among 3561 patients (mean [SD] age, 60.1 [10.1] years; 2002 female [56.2%]), 2360 (66.3%) were younger than 65 years, 982 (27.6%) were between ages 65 to 75 years, and 219 (6.1%) were older than 75 years. The primary outcome was MACE at a median (IQR) follow-up of 3.5 (2.9-4.2) years for 3523 patients (99%). Modeling age as a continuous variable, age, and randomization group were not associated with MACE (hazard ratio, 1.02; 95% CI, 0.98-1.07; P for interaction = .31). Age and randomization group were associated with major procedure-related complications (odds ratio, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.05-1.27; P for interaction = .005), which were lower in younger patients. Purpose To compare initial use of CT versus invasive coronary angiography (ICA) on clinical outcomes in patients with stable chest pain stratified by BMI category. Materials and Methods This prospective study represents a prespecified BMI subgroup analysis of the multicenter Diagnostic Imaging Strategies for Patients with Stable Chest Pain and Intermediate Risk of Coronary Artery Disease (DISCHARGE) trial conducted between October 2015 and April 2019. Adult patients with stable chest pain and a CAD pretest probability of 10%–60% were randomly assigned to undergo initial CT or ICA. The primary end point was major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), including cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or stroke. The secondary end point was an expanded MACE composite, including transient ischemic attack, and major procedure-related complications. Competing risk analyses were performed using the Fine and Gray subdistribution Cox proportional hazard model to assess the impact of the relationship between BMI and initial management with CT or ICA on the study outcomes, whereas noncardiovascular death and unknown causes of death were considered competing risk events. Results Among the 3457 participants included, 831 (24.0%), 1358 (39.3%), and 1268 (36.7%) had a BMI of less than 25, between 25 and 30, and greater than 30 kg/m2, respectively. No interaction was found between CT or ICA and BMI for MACE (P = .29), the expanded MACE composite (P = .38), or major procedure-related complications (P = .49). Abstract: Protein-based virus-like particles (P-VLPs) are commonly used to spatially organize antigens and enhance humoral immunity through multivalent antigen display. However, P-VLPs are thymus-dependent antigens that are themselves immunogenic and can induce B cell responses that may neutralize the platform. Here, we investigate thymus-independent DNA origami as an alternative material for multivalent antigen display using the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, the primary target of neutralizing antibody responses. Sequential immunization of mice with DNA-based VLPs (DNA-VLPs) elicits protective neutralizing antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in a manner that depends on the valency of the antigen displayed and on T cell help. Importantly, the immune sera do not contain boosted, class-switched antibodies against the DNA scaffold, in contrast to P-VLPs that elicit strong B cell memory against both the target antigen and the scaffold. Thus, DNA-VLPs enhance target antigen immunogenicity without generating scaffold-directed immunity and thereby offer an important alternative material for particulate vaccine design.

Abstract: CompactLight is a Design Study funded by the European Union under the Horizon 2020 research and innovation funding programme, with Grant Agreement No. 777431. CompactLight was conducted by an International Collaboration of 23 international laboratories and academic institutions, three private companies, and five third parties. The project, which started in January 2018 with a duration of 48 months, aimed to design an innovative, compact, and cost-effective hard X-ray FEL facility complemented by a soft X-ray source to pave the road for future compact accelerator-based facilities. The result is an accelerator that can be operated at up to 1 kHz pulse repetition rate, beyond today’s state of the art, using the latest concepts for high brightness electron photoinjectors, very high gradient accelerating structures in X-band, and novel short-period undulators. In this report, we summarize the main deliverable of the project: the CompactLight Conceptual Design Report, which overviews the current status of the design and addresses the main technological challenges.

28. Social bots sour activist sentiment without eroding engagement

Abstract: Social media platforms have witnessed a substantial increase in social bot activity, significantly affecting online discourse. Our study explores the dynamic nature of bot engagement related to Extinction Rebellion climate change protests from 18 November 2019 to 10 December 2019. We find that bots exert a greater influence on human behavior than vice versa during heated online periods. To assess the causal impact of human-bot communication, we compared communication histories between human users who directly interacted with bots and matched human users who did not. Our findings demonstrate a consistent negative impact of bot interactions on subsequent human sentiment, with exposed users displaying significantly more negative sentiment than their counterparts. Furthermore, the nature of bot interaction influences human tweeting activity and the sentiment towards protests. Political astroturfing bots increase activity, whereas other bots decrease it. Sentiment changes towards protests depend on the user's original support level, indicating targeted manipulation. However, bot interactions do not change activists' engagement towards protests. Despite the seemingly minor impact of individual bot encounters, the cumulative effect is profound due to the large volume of bot communication. Abstract: Recent advances in the field of immuno-oncology have brought transformative changes in the management of cancer patients. The immune profile of tumours has been found to have key value in predicting disease prognosis and treatment response in various cancers. Multiplex immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence have emerged as potent tools for the simultaneous detection of multiple protein biomarkers in a single tissue section, thereby expanding opportunities for molecular and immune profiling while preserving tissue samples. By establishing the phenotype of individual tumour cells when distributed within a mixed cell population, the identification of clinically relevant biomarkers with high-throughput multiplex immunophenotyping of tumour samples has great potential to guide appropriate treatment choices. Moreover, the emergence of novel multi-marker imaging approaches can now provide unprecedented insights into the tumour microenvironment, including the potential interplay between various cell types. However, there are significant challenges to widespread integration of these technologies in daily research and clinical practice. This review addresses the challenges and potential solutions within a structured framework of action from a regulatory and clinical trial perspective. New developments within the field of immunophenotyping using multiplexed tissue imaging platforms and associated digital pathology are also described, with a specific focus on translational implications across different subtypes of cancer.

30. Dual drive series actuator

Abstract: Industrial robotic manipulators can be found in most factories today. Their tasks are accomplished through actively moving, placing and assembling parts. This movement is facilitated by actuators that apply a torque in response to a command signal. The presence of friction and possibly backlash have instigated the development of sophisticated compensation and control methods in order to achieve the desired performance may that be accurate motion tracking, fast movement or in fact contact with the environment. This thesis presents a dual drive actuator design that is capable of physically linearising friction and hence eliminating the need for complex compensation algorithms. A number of mathematical models are derived that allow for the simulation of the actuator dynamics. The actuator may be constructed using geared dc motors, in which case the benefits of torque magnification is retained whilst the increased non-linear friction effects are also linearised. An additional benefit of the actuator is the high quality, low latency output position signal provided by the differencing of the two drive positions. Due to this and the linearised nature of friction, the actuator is well suited for low velocity, stop-start applications, micro-manipulation and even in hard-contact tasks. There are, however, disadvantages to its design. When idle, the device uses power whilst many other, single drive actuators do not. Also the complexity of the models mean that parameterisation is difficult. Management of start-up conditions still pose a challenge.

Abstract: While a lot of previous work has focused on the Marlovian quartet, on questions of narrative method and of identity in Conrad, there has been no full-length study of the close connection between narration and identity in his fiction. The thesis is informed by Paul Ricoeur's philosophical concept of narrative identity, which is usefully summed up in his observation that subjects recognize themselves in the stories they tell about themselves. Taking this concept as a starting point, I also rely on more recent discussions of narrative identity and different narratological models. Although Conrad's fiction betrays an ongoing concern with the way in which personal as well as collective identities are constructed through storytelling, the Marlovian narratives offer a particularly fruitful ground for an examination. I argue that Marlow as personified narrator not only allows Conrad to dramatize these issues in the fiction; it is also partly through Marlow that Conrad creates his own literary identity. After a brief chapter on some general features of Conradian narrative, I go on to explore Marlow's double function, with each subsequent chapter providing a close reading of one of the Marlovian narratives. As we move from "Youth" (Chapter 2) to "Heart of Darkness" (Chapter 3), Conrad's focus shifts from adjusting his literary identity to the demands of publication in Blackwood's Magazine to a dramatization within the text of how the problems of narration and identity are related. Lord Jim (Chapter 4) is Conrad's fullest exploration of the compulsion to tell and the desire to have our self-narratives verified by others. Chance (Chapter 5) develops the previous novel's insights into the part played by the imagination in self-construction. The thesis concludes by suggesting certain parallels between Conrad's understanding of narrative identity in the Marlow fictions and in some of his non-fiction.

Abstract: The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN will undergo major upgrades to increase the instantaneous luminosity up to 5-7.5×1034 cm-2s-1. This High Luminosity upgrade of the LHC (HL-LHC) will deliver a total of 3000-4000 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13-14 TeV. To cope with these challenging environmental conditions, the strip tracker of the CMS experiment will be upgraded using modules with two closely-spaced silicon sensors to provide information to include tracking in the Level-1 trigger selection. This paper describes the performance, in a test beam experiment, of the first prototype module based on the final version of the CMS Binary Chip front-end ASIC before and after the module was irradiated with neutrons. Results demonstrate that the prototype module satisfies the requirements, providing efficient tracking information, after being irradiated with a total fluence comparable to the one expected through the lifetime of the experiment.

34. Application of carbon dioxide in reaction work-up and purification procedures

Abstract: The production of fine chemicals, including active pharmaceutical ingredients, can lead to large amounts of waste, including by-products and contaminated solvents. In many cases, it is actually the work-up of the reaction and purification, rather than the reaction itself, which is responsible. CO2-based procedures have been developed, which can potentially alleviate some of these problems. They can be summarised as follows: I. The distribution of certain organic bases/acids between organic and aqueous phases could be tuned by exposing the two phases to CO2, exploiting a pH change due the acidic character of CO2. The induced change could be reversible by physical decarboxylation. Numerous amines and other organic bases were tested for CO2 aided aqueous extraction. Connection between their pKa and logP was found, and an empiric formula was proposed to predict the possibility of extraction. Concentration dependence of the CO2 aided aqueous extraction and rate of the chemical free neutralisation were also investigated for benzyl amines and drug molecules with amine functions. II. CO2 can enhance the ability to precipitate of certain amines, exploiting a carbamate formation reaction. This would dramatically reduce the amount of acid and base required for preparation of amine salt derivatives and neutralisation. Tendencies of several secondary amines for CO2 adduct formation were tested, and detailed analysis of these often labile compounds was discussed. Possibility of carbamate formation based separation was demonstrated. III. CO2 could be used to induce precipitation of polar compounds from their solution at elevated pressures when utilised as an antisolvent, exploiting its nonpolar character and its solubility in organic solvents. Numerous solute-solvent systems were exposed to pressurised CO2, either above or under its critical temperature. High pressures can often be a limitations for industrial procedures. Operation at lower temperatures allowed the application of lower pressures, because of the decreased vapour pressure of liquid CO2. Possibility to separate solute mixtures was also demonstrated.

35. Ion camera development for real–time acquisition of localised pH responses using the CMOS based 64×64–pixel ISFET sensor array technology

Abstract: This thesis presents the development and test of an integrated ion camera chip for monitoring highly localised ion fluxes of electrochemical processes using an ion sensitive sensor array. Ionic concentration fluctuations are shown to travel across the sensor array as a result of citric acid injection and the BZ-reaction. The imaging capability of non-equilibrium chemical activities is also demonstrated monitoring self-assembling micrometre sized polyoxometalate tubular and membranous architectures. The sufficient spatial resolution for the visualisation of the 10-60 µm wide growing trajectories is provided by the dense sensor array containing 64×64 pixels. In the case of citric acid injection and the BZ-reaction the ion camera chip is shown to be able to resolve pH differences with resolution as low as the area of one pixel. As a result of the transient and volatile ionic fluxes high time resolution is required, thus the signal capturing can be performed in real.time at the maximum sampling rate of 40 µs per pixel, 10.2 ms per array. The extracted sensor data are reconstructed into ionic images and thus the ionic activities can be displayed as individual figures as well as continuous video recordings. This chip is the first prototype in the envisioned establishment of a fully automated CMOS based ion camera system which would be able to image the invisible activity of ions using a single microchip. In addition the capability of detecting ultra-low level pH oscillations in the extracellular space is demonstrated using cells of the slime mould organism. The detected pH oscillations with extent of ~0.022 pH furthermore raise the potential for observing fluctuations of ion currents in cell based tissue environments. The intrinsic noise of the sensor devices are measured to observe noise effect on the detected low level signals. It is experimentally shown that the used ion sensitive circuits, similarly to CMOS, also demonstrate 1/f noise. In addition the reference bias and pH sensitivity of the measured noise is confirmed. Corresponding to the measurement results the noise contribution is approximated with a 28.2 µV peak-to-peak level and related to the 450 µV +/- 70 µV peak-to-peak oscillations amplitudes of the slime mould. Thus a maximum intrinsic noise contribution of 6.2 +/- 1.2 % is calculated. A H+ flickering hypothesis is also presented that correlates the pH fluctuations on the surface of the device with the intrinsic 1/f noise. The ion camera chip was fabricated in an unmodified 4-metal 0.35 µm CMOS process and the ionic imaging technology was based on a 64×64-pixel ion sensitive field effect transistor (ISFET) array. The high-speed and synchronous operation of the 4096 ISFET sensors occupying 715.8×715.8 µm space provided a spatial resolution as low as one pixel. Each pixel contained 4 transistors with 10.2×10.2 µm layout dimensions and the pixels were separated by a 1 µm separation gap. The ion sensitive silicon nitride based passivation layer was in contact with the floating gates of the ISFET sensors. It allowed the capacitive measurements of localised changes in the ionic concentrations, e.g. pH, pNa, on the surface of the chip. The device showed an average ionic sensitivity of 20 mV/pH and 9 mV/pNa. The packaging and encapsulation was carried out using PGA-100 chip carriers and two-component epoxies. Custom designed printed circuit boards (PCBs) were used to provide interface between the ISFET array chip and the data acquisition system. The data acquisition and extraction part of the developed software system was based on LabVIEW, the data processing was carried out on Matlab platform.

36. Attention and awareness in human learning and decision making

Abstract: This dissertation presents an investigation of the modifying role of attention and awareness in human learning and decision making. A series of experiments showed that performance in a range of tests of unconscious cognition can be better explained as resulting from conscious attention rather than from implicit processes. The first three experiments utilised a modification of the Serial Reaction Time task in order to measure the interaction of implicit and explicit learning processes. The results did not show evidence for an interaction, but did exhibit an effect of explicit knowledge of the underlying rules of the task. Subsequent studies examined the role of selective attention in learning. The investigation failed to provide evidence that learning inevitably results from the simple presentation of contingent stimuli over repeated trials. Instead, the learning effects appeared to be modulated by explicit attention to the association between stimuli. The following study with a novel test designed to measure the role of selective attention in prediction learning demonstrated that learning is not an obligatory consequence of simultaneous activation of representations of the associated stimuli. Rather, learning occurred only when attention was drawn explicitly to the association between the stimuli. Finally, the Deliberation without Attention Paradigm was tested in a replication study along with two novel versions of the task. Additional assessment of the conscious status of participants' judgments indicated that explicit deliberation and memory could best explain the effect and that the original test may not be a reliable measure of intuition. In summary, the data in these studies did not require explanation in terms of unconscious cognition. These results do not preclude the possibility that unconscious processes could occur in these or other designs. However, the present work emphasises the role conscious attention plays in human learning and decision making.

Abstract: Ki67 has potential clinical importance in breast cancer but has yet to see broad acceptance due to inter-laboratory variability. Here we tested an open source and calibrated automated digital image analysis (DIA) platform to: (i) investigate the comparability of Ki67 measurement across corresponding core biopsy and resection specimen cases, and (ii) assess section to section differences in Ki67 scoring. Two sets of 60 previously stained slides containing 30 core-cut biopsy and 30 corresponding resection specimens from 30 estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer patients were sent to 17 participating labs for automated assessment of average Ki67 expression. The blocks were centrally cut and immunohistochemically (IHC) stained for Ki67 (MIB-1 antibody). The QuPath platform was used to evaluate tumoral Ki67 expression. Calibration of the DIA method was performed as in published studies. A guideline for building an automated Ki67 scoring algorithm was sent to participating labs. Very high correlation and no systematic error (p = 0.08) was found between consecutive Ki67 IHC sections. Ki67 scores were higher for core biopsy slides compared to paired whole sections from resections (p ≤ 0.001; median difference: 5.31%). The systematic discrepancy between core biopsy and corresponding whole sections was likely due to pre-analytical factors (tissue handling, fixation). Therefore, Ki67 IHC should be tested on core biopsy samples to best reflect the biological status of the tumor.

40. Deep Q-learning: a robust control approach

Abstract: In this paper, we place deep Q-learning into a control-oriented perspective and study its learning dynamics with well-established techniques from robust control. We formulate an uncertain linear time-invariant model by means of the neural tangent kernel to describe learning. We show the instability of learning and analyze the agent's behavior in frequency-domain. Then, we ensure convergence via robust controllers acting as dynamical rewards in the loss function. We synthesize three controllers: state-feedback gain scheduling H2, dynamic Hinf, and constant gain Hinf controllers. Setting up the learning agent with a control-oriented tuning methodology is more transparent and has well-established literature compared to the heuristics in reinforcement learning. In addition, our approach does not use a target network and randomized replay memory. The role of the target network is overtaken by the control input, which also exploits the temporal dependency of samples (opposed to a randomized memory buffer). Numerical simulations in different OpenAI Gym environments suggest that the Hinf controlled learning performs slightly better than Double deep Q-learning.

Abstract: Introduction: Patients with immune-mediated glomerular diseases are considered at high risk for severe COVID-19 outcomes. However, conclusive evidence for this patient population is scarce.Methods: We created a global registry and retrospectively collected clinical data of patients with COVID-19 and a previously diagnosed immune-mediated glomerular disease to characterize specific risk factors for severe COVID-19 outcomes.Results: Fifty-nine patients with a history of immune-mediated glomerular diseases were diagnosed with COVID-19 between 01.03.2020 and 31.08.2021. Over a mean follow-up period of 24.79 +/- 18.89 days, ten patients (16.9%) developed acute kidney injury. Overall, 44.1% of patients were managed in an outpatient setting and therefore considered as having "non-severe" COVID-19, while 55.9% of patients had severe COVID-19 requiring hospitalization including worse outcomes. Comparing both groups, patients with severe COVID-19 were significantly older (53.55 +/- 17.91 versus 39.77 +/- 14.95 years, p = .003), had lower serum albumin levels at presentation (3.00 +/- 0.80 g/dL versus 3.99 +/- 0.68 g/dL, p = .016) and had a higher risk of developing acute kidney injury (27% versus 4%, p = .018). Male sex (p <.001) and ongoing intake of corticosteroids at presentation (p = .047) were also significantly associated with severe COVID-19 outcomes, while the overall use of ongoing immunosuppressive agents and glomerular disease remission status showed no significant association with the severity of COVID-19 (p = .430 and p = .326, respectively).Conclusion: Older age, male sex, ongoing intake of corticosteroids and lower serum albumin levels at presentation were identified as risk factors for severe COVID-19 outcomes in patients with a history of various immune-mediated glomerular diseases., Funding Agencies|The authors thank Lalit Kaltenbach for his support with the creation and administration of the REDCap database.

Abstract: Over the last three decades, innovations in the memory subsystem were primarily targeted at overcoming the data movement bottleneck. In this paper, we focus on a specific market trend in memory technology: 3D-stacked memory and caches. We investigate the impact of extending the on-chip memory capabilities in future HPC-focused processors, particularly by 3D-stacked SRAM. First, we propose a method oblivious to the memory subsystem to gauge the upper-bound in performance improvements when data movement costs are eliminated. Then, using the gem5 simulator, we model two variants of a hypothetical LARge Cache processor (LARC), fabricated in 1.5 nm and enriched with high-capacity 3D-stacked cache. With a volume of experiments involving a broad set of proxy-applications and benchmarks, we aim to reveal how HPC CPU performance will evolve, and conclude an average boost of 9.56× for cache-sensitive HPC applications, on a per-chip basis. Abstract: Over the last decade, society and industries have undergone rapid digitization that is expected to lead to the evolution of the cyber-physical continuum. End-to-end deterministic communications infrastructure is the essential glue that will bridge the digital and physical worlds of the continuum. We describe the state of the art and open challenges with respect to contemporary deterministic communications and compute technologies- 3GPP 5G, IEEE Time-Sensitive Networking, IETF DetNet, OPC UA as well as edge computing. While these technologies represent significant technological advancements towards networking Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), we argue in this paper that they rather represent a first generation of systems that are still limited in different dimensions. In contrast, realizing future deterministic communications systems requires, firstly, seamless convergence between these technologies and, secondly, scalability to support heterogeneous (time-varying requirements) arising from diverse CPS applications. In addition, future deterministic communication networks will have to provide such characteristics end-to-end, which for CPS refers to the entire communication and computation loop, from sensors to actuators. In this paper, we discuss the state of the art regarding the main challenges towards these goals: predictability, end-to-end technology integration, end-to-end security, and scalable vertical application interfacing. We then present our vision regarding viable approaches and technological enablers to overcome these four central challenges. In particular, we argue that there is currently a window of opportunity to establish, through 6G standardization, the foundations for a scalable and converged deterministic communications and compute infrastructure. Abstract: The identification of proteins in the cellular membrane of the tumoral cell is a key to the design and guidance of therapeutic agents. Recently, a bi-specific antibody termed amivantamab, targeting epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and mesenchymal–epithelial transition factor (MET), which are oncogenic membrane proteins, received regulatory approval for the treatment of adult patients with locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In this study, the authors explored tumor types with high levels of expression of EGFR and MET and focused on prostate adenocarcinoma and pancreatic adenocarcinoma, where anti-PD(L)1 agents alone have not shown relevant signs of activity. In addition, the authors confirmed that high expression of either receptor is associated with poor response to anti-PD(L)1 therapy, independently of the expression of PD-L1, suggesting that blocking these receptors with bi-specific EGFR/MET antibodies could augment the efficacy of anti-PD(L)1 inhibitors, Background: The identification of proteins in the cellular membrane of the tumoral cell is a key to the design of therapeutic agents. Results: In PAAD, EGFR highly correlated with PD-L1 and MET, and MET showed a moderate correlation with PD-L1, while in PRAD, EGFR, MET and PD-L1 showed a strong correlation. In addition, in tumors treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors, including anti-PD(L)1 and anti-CTLA4, a high expression of EGFR and MET predicted detrimental survival. When exploring the relationship of immune populations with these receptors, the authors observed that in PAAD and PRAD, EGFR moderately correlated with CD8+ T cells. Furthermore, EGFR and MET correlated with neutrophils in PRAD. This workshop brings together best practice from expert practitioners across the UK, introducing a nationally curated 'Engineering Ethics Toolkit'. To help educators to know and use the toolkit the workshop offered an attractive translation of engineering ethics teaching theory to the practice of engineering education. In this workshop, participants were introduced to a pragmatic approach to integrating ethics content into their teaching, using examples and a detailed and interactive curriculum map, which connects the elements of the toolkit. Our aim is to ensure the toolkit becomes an ongoing, regular component of engineering teaching and highlighting excellence in integrating ethics. The workshop was as a seed to encourage further case studies to be developed and to also explore what can yet be done in this space to ensure the next generation of engineers are well-equipped to address the ethical issues they face.

Abstract: The relation between religiosity and well-being is one of the most researched topics in the psychology of religion, yet the directionality and robustness of the effect remains debated. Here, we adopted a many-analysts approach to assess the robustness of this relation based on a new cross-cultural dataset (N = 10, 535 participants from 24 countries). We recruited 120 analysis teams to investigate (1) whether religious people self-report higher well-being, and (2) whether the relation between religiosity and self-reported well-being depends on perceived cultural norms of religion (i.e., whether it is considered normal and desirable to be religious in a given country). In a two-stage procedure, the teams first created an analysis plan and then executed their planned analysis on the data. For the first research question, all but 3 teams reported positive effect sizes with credible/confidence intervals excluding zero (median reported beta = 0.120). For the second research question, this was the case for 65% of the teams (median reported beta = 0.039). Abstract: High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe standard model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the standard model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. We report here on these physics topics, on infrastructure, detector, and simulation studies, and on future directions to realize the FPF's physics potential.

Abstract: We present results from exploratory studies, supported by the Physics Beyond Colliders (PBC) Study Group, of the suitability of a CERN site and its infrastructure for hosting a vertical atom interferometer (AI) with a baseline of about 100 m. We first review the scientific motivations for such an experiment to search for ultralight dark matter and measure gravitational waves, and then outline the general technical requirements for such an atom interferometer, using the AION-100 project as an example. We present a possible CERN site in the PX46 access shaft to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), including the motivations for this choice and a description of its infrastructure. We then assess its compliance with the technical requirements of such an experiment and what upgrades may be needed. We analyse issues related to the proximity of the LHC machine and its ancillary hardware and present a preliminary safety analysis and the required mitigation measures and infrastructure modifications. In conclusion, we identify primary cost drivers and describe constraints on the experimental installation and operation schedules arising from LHC operation. Abstract: The aquatic Araceae species Lemna minor was earlier shown to have xyloglucans with a different structure from the fucogalactoxyloglucans of other non-commelinid monocotyledons. We investigated 26 Araceae species (including L. minor), from five of the seven subfamilies. All seven aquatic species examined had xyloglucans that were unusual in having one or two of three features: < 77% XXXG core motif [L. minor (Lemnoideae) and Orontium aquaticum (Orontioideae)]; no fucosylation [L. minor (Lemnoideae), Cryptocoryne aponogetonifolia, and Lagenandra ovata (Aroideae, Rheophytes clade)]; and > 14% oligosaccharide units with S or D side chains [Spirodela polyrhiza and Landoltia punctata (Lemnoideae) and Pistia stratiotes (Aroideae, Dracunculus clade)]. Orontioideae and Lemnoideae are the two most basal subfamilies, with all species being aquatic, and Aroideae is the most derived. Two terrestrial species [Dieffenbachia seguine and Spathicarpa hastifolia (Aroideae, Zantedeschia clade)] also had xyloglucans without fucose indicating this feature was not unique to aquatic species., QC 20230215

Abstract: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Psychological Science Accelerator coordinated three large-scale psychological studies to examine the effects of loss-gain framing, cognitive reappraisals, and autonomy framing manipulations on behavioral intentions and affective measures. The data collected (April to October 2020) included specific measures for each experimental study, a general questionnaire examining health prevention behaviors and COVID-19 experience, geographical and cultural context characterization, and demographic information for each participant. Each participant started the study with the same general questions and then was randomized to complete either one longer experiment or two shorter experiments. Data were provided by 73,223 participants with varying completion rates. Participants completed the survey from 111 geopolitical regions in 44 unique languages/dialects. The anonymized dataset described here is provided in both raw and processed formats to facilitate re-use and further analyses. The dataset offers secondary analytic opportunities to explore coping, framing, and self-determination across a diverse, global sample obtained at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which can be merged with other time-sampled or geographic data.
