Abstract: Springtails (Collembola) inhabit soils from the Arctic to the Antarctic and comprise an estimated ~32% of all terrestrial arthropods on Earth. Here, we present a global, spatially-explicit database on springtail communities that includes 249,912 occurrences from 44,999 samples and 2,990 sites. These data are mainly raw sample-level records at the species level collected predominantly from private archives of the authors that were quality-controlled and taxonomically-standardised. Despite covering all continents, most of the sample-level data come from the European continent (82.5% of all samples) and represent four habitats: woodlands (57.4%), grasslands (14.0%), agrosystems (13.7%) and scrublands (9.0%). We included sampling by soil layers, and across seasons and years, representing temporal and spatial within-site variation in springtail communities. We also provided data use and sharing guidelines and R code to facilitate the use of the database by other researchers. This data paper describes a static version of the database at the publication date, but the database will be further expanded to include underrepresented regions and linked with trait data.

Abstract: Springtails (Collembola) inhabit soils from the Arctic to the Antarctic and comprise an estimated ~32% of all terrestrial arthropods on Earth. Here, we present a global, spatially-explicit database on springtail communities that includes 249,912 occurrences from 44,999 samples and 2,990 sites. These data are mainly raw sample-level records at the species level collected predominantly from private archives of the authors that were quality-controlled and taxonomically-standardised. Despite covering all continents, most of the sample-level data come from the European continent (82.5% of all samples) and represent four habitats: woodlands (57.4%), grasslands (14.0%), agrosystems (13.7%) and scrublands (9.0%). We included sampling by soil layers, and across seasons and years, representing temporal and spatial within-site variation in springtail communities. We also provided data use and sharing guidelines and R code to facilitate the use of the database by other researchers. This data paper describes a static version of the database at the publication date, but the database will be further expanded to include underrepresented regions and linked with trait data.

Abstract: Fluorescence imaging is an invaluable tool to investigate biomolecular dynamics, mechanics, and interactions in aqueous environments. Two-dimensional materials offer large-area, atomically smooth surfaces for wide-field biomolecule imaging. Despite the success of graphene for on-chip biosensing and biomolecule manipulation, its strong fluorescence-quenching properties pose a challenge for biomolecular investigations that are based on direct optical readouts. Here, we employ few-layer hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) as a precisely tailorable fluorescence spacer between labelled lipid membranes and graphene substrates. By stacking high-quality hBN crystals in the 10–20 nm thickness range on monolayer graphene, we observe distance-dependent fluorescence intensity variations. Remarkably, with hBN spacers as thin as 20 nm, the fluorescence intensity is comparable to bare SiO2/Si substrates, while the intensity was reduced to 60 % and 80 % with ~10 nm and ~16 nm hBN thicknesses respectively. We confirm that pre-determined hBN thicknesses can be employed to control the non-radiative energy transfer properties of graphene, with fluorescence quenching following a d−4 distance-dependent behaviour. Abstract: A promising approach to raising the caliber and accessibility of healthcare services is the development of Smart Healthcare Systems. However, the union of wireless networks and smart medical devices has created additional security issues, such as the possibility of identity theft, data breaches, and denial-of-service assaults. These flaws emphasize the significance of creating a safe and dependable smart healthcare system that can safeguard patient data and guarantee the confidentiality of private medical information. This study suggests adopting 5G security standards to address the security issues with smart healthcare systems. The threat modeling approach, which includes six threat categories (spoofing, tampering, repudiation, information disclosure, denial of service, and elevation of privilege), is used in this study to investigate potential threats in smart healthcare systems. The report suggests using strong encryption protocols between smart healthcare equipment and 5G-AKA to reduce these potential threats. The proposed approach showed appreciable advancements in data security and privacy. According to the findings, 5G security standards can be used to efficiently reduce security risks in smart healthcare systems and establish a trustworthy and secure platform for delivering medical services. These flaws emphasize the significance of creating a safe and dependable smart healthcare system that can safeguard patient data and guarantee the confidentiality of private medical information. This study suggests adopting 5G security standards to address the security issues with smart healthcare systems. The threat modeling approach, which includes six threat categories (spoofing, tampering, repudiation, information disclosure, denial of service, and elevation of privilege), is used in this study to investigate potential threats in smart healthcare systems. The report suggests using strong encryption protocols between smart healthcare equipment and 5G-AKA to reduce these potential threats. The proposed approach showed appreciable advancements in data security and privacy. According to the findings, 5G security standards can be used to efficiently reduce security risks in smart healthcare systems and establish a trustworthy and secure platform for delivering medical services. 11. QUASAR: QUality and Aesthetics Scoring with Advanced Representations

Abstract: This paper introduces a new data-driven, non-parametric method for image quality and aesthetics assessment, surpassing existing approaches and requiring no prompt engineering or fine-tuning. We eliminate the need for expressive textual embeddings by proposing efficient image anchors in the data. Through extensive evaluations of 7 state-of-the-art self-supervised models, our method demonstrates superior performance and robustness across various datasets and benchmarks. Notably, it achieves high agreement with human assessments even with limited data and shows high robustness to the nature of data and their pre-processing pipeline. Our contributions offer a streamlined solution for assessment of images while providing insights into the perception of visual information.

12. Extreme Compression of Large Language Models via Additive Quantization

Abstract: The emergence of accurate open large language models (LLMs) has led to a race towards quantization techniques for such models enabling execution on end-user devices. In this paper, we revisit the problem of "extreme" LLM compression--defined as targeting extremely low bit counts, such as 2 to 3 bits per parameter, from the point of view of classic methods in Multi-Codebook Quantization (MCQ). Our work builds on top of Additive Quantization, a classic algorithm from the MCQ family, and adapts it to the quantization of language models. The resulting algorithm advances the state-of-the-art in LLM compression, outperforming all recently-proposed techniques in terms of accuracy at a given compression budget. For instance, when compressing Llama 2 models to 2 bits per parameter, our algorithm quantizes the 7B model to 6.93 perplexity (a 1.29 improvement relative to the best prior work, and 1.81 points from FP16), the 13B model to 5.70 perplexity (a .36 improvement) and the 70B model to 3.94 perplexity (a .22 improvement) on WikiText2. Abstract: Springtails (Collembola) inhabit soils from the Arctic to the Antarctic and comprise an estimated ~32% of all terrestrial arthropods on Earth. Here, we present a global, spatially-explicit database on springtail communities that includes 249,912 occurrences from 44,999 samples and 2,990 sites. These data are mainly raw sample-level records at the species level collected predominantly from private archives of the authors that were quality-controlled and taxonomically-standardised. Despite covering all continents, most of the sample-level data come from the European continent (82.5% of all samples) and represent four habitats: woodlands (57.4%), grasslands (14.0%), agrosystems (13.7%) and scrublands (9.0%). We included sampling by soil layers, and across seasons and years, representing temporal and spatial within-site variation in springtail communities. We also provided data use and sharing guidelines and R code to facilitate the use of the database by other researchers. This data paper describes a static version of the database at the publication date, but the database will be further expanded to include underrepresented regions and linked with trait data.

Abstract: In the rapidly progressing field of generative models, the development of efficient and high-fidelity text-to-image diffusion systems represents a significant frontier. This study introduces YaART, a novel production-grade text-to-image cascaded diffusion model aligned to human preferences using Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). During the development of YaART, we especially focus on the choices of the model and training dataset sizes, the aspects that were not systematically investigated for text-to-image cascaded diffusion models before. In particular, we comprehensively analyze how these choices affect both the efficiency of the training process and the quality of the generated images, which are highly important in practice. Furthermore, we demonstrate that models trained on smaller datasets of higher-quality images can successfully compete with those trained on larger datasets, establishing a more efficient scenario of diffusion models training. Abstract: Soil life supports the functioning and biodiversity of terrestrial ecosystems. Springtails (Collembola) are among the most abundant soil arthropods regulating soil fertility and flow of energy through above- and belowground food webs. However, the global distribution of springtail diversity and density, and how these relate to energy fluxes remains unknown. Here, using a global dataset representing 2470 sites, we estimate the total soil springtail biomass at 27.5 megatons carbon, which is threefold higher than wild terrestrial vertebrates, and record peak densities up to 2 million individuals per square meter in the tundra. Despite a 20-fold biomass difference between the tundra and the tropics, springtail energy use (community metabolism) remains similar across the latitudinal gradient, owing to the changes in temperature with latitude. Neither springtail density nor community metabolism is predicted by local species richness, which is high in the tropics, but comparably high in some temperate forests and even tundra. Changes in springtail activity may emerge from latitudinal gradients in temperature, predation and resource limitation in soil communities. Contrasting relationships of biomass, diversity and activity of springtail communities with temperature suggest that climate warming will alter fundamental soil biodiversity metrics in different directions, potentially restructuring terrestrial food webs and affecting soil functioning.

16. Dynamic Allostatic Modulation During Appraisal, Cognitive Challenge, and Across the Menstrual Cycle

Abstract: Unlike males, naturally menstruating females undergo a distinct hormonal monthly cycle, in which hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) sex hormones undergo drastic concentration changes across a single menstrual cycle. Furthermore, major regions of the brain are packed with receptors for both HPG and stress hormones. For these reasons, both HPG and stress hormones have numerous direct as well as indirect effects on the brain and body. The present research seeks to enhance the measurement of stress by developing definitive sympathetic drive measurement techniques to then record dynamic fluctuations of allostatic processes in relation to performance feedback and quantitative concentrations of HPG hormones within menstruating females. Current methods of measuring allostatic dynamics include the electrocardiogram (ECG) and impedance cardiography (ICG), which are typically combined to estimate actions of cardiac sympathetic nervous system (SNS); an indicator of stress responses mediated by the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Current methods of ICG are time intensive in subject preparation and analysis, and the measurements are vulnerable to non-reproducible subject-specific electrode configuration. With the present research, we present alternative state-of-the-art methods for tracking actions of the SNS. In Experiments 1 – 3, we present evidence of an electro-resonator, an accelerometer, and a trans-radial electrical bioimpedance velocimetry device (TREV) appropriately tracking SNS responses to physical stress tasks known to induce disruptions of allostatic processes. We further determine that the TREV device (Experiment 3) has the capacity to replace the need for ICG and ECG in estimating ANS activity, proving to be a reliable and capable method that is robust, time efficient, and readily accessible to researchers. 17. Packing Odd Walks and Trails in Multiterminal Networks

Abstract: Let G be an undirected network with a distinguished set of terminals T ? V(G) and edge capacities cap: E(G) ? ?_+. By an odd T-walk we mean a walk in G (with possible vertex and edge self-intersections) connecting two distinct terminals and consisting of an odd number of edges. Inspired by the work of Schrijver and Seymour on odd path packing for two terminals, we consider packings of odd T-walks subject to capacities cap. First, we present a strongly polynomial time algorithm for constructing a maximum fractional packing of odd T-walks. For even integer capacities, our algorithm constructs a packing that is half-integer. Additionally, if cap(?(v)) is divisible by 4 for any v ? V(G)-T, our algorithm constructs an integer packing. Second, we establish and prove the corresponding min-max relation. Third, if G is inner Eulerian (i.e. degrees of all nodes in V(G)-T are even) and cap(e) = 2 for all e ? E, we show that there exists an integer packing of odd T-trails (i.e. odd T-walks with no repeated edges) of the same value as in case of odd T-walks, and this packing can be found in polynomial time. To achieve the above goals, we establish a connection between packings of odd T-walks and T-trails and certain multiflow problems in undirected and bidirected graphs.

Abstract: Soil life supports the functioning and biodiversity of terrestrial ecosystems. Springtails (Collembola) are among the most abundant soil arthropods regulating soil fertility and flow of energy through above- and belowground food webs. However, the global distribution of springtail diversity and density, and how these relate to energy fluxes remains unknown. Here, using a global dataset representing 2470 sites, we estimate the total soil springtail biomass at 27.5 megatons carbon, which is threefold higher than wild terrestrial vertebrates, and record peak densities up to 2 million individuals per square meter in the tundra. Despite a 20-fold biomass difference between the tundra and the tropics, springtail energy use (community metabolism) remains similar across the latitudinal gradient, owing to the changes in temperature with latitude. Neither springtail density nor community metabolism is predicted by local species richness, which is high in the tropics, but comparably high in some temperate forests and even tundra. Changes in springtail activity may emerge from latitudinal gradients in temperature, predation and resource limitation in soil communities. Contrasting relationships of biomass, diversity and activity of springtail communities with temperature suggest that climate warming will alter fundamental soil biodiversity metrics in different directions, potentially restructuring terrestrial food webs and affecting soil functioning., The article is an outcome of the #GlobalCollembola community initiative that is voluntarily supported by researchers around the world.

Abstract: Biological age, distinct from an individual's chronological age, has been studied extensively through predictive aging clocks. However, these clocks have limited accuracy in short time-scales. Here we trained deep learning models on fundus images from the EyePACS dataset to predict individuals' chronological age. Our retinal aging clocking, 'eyeAge', predicted chronological age more accurately than other aging clocks (mean absolute error of 2.86 and 3.30 years on quality-filtered data from EyePACS and UK Biobank, respectively). Additionally, eyeAge was independent of blood marker-based measures of biological age, maintaining an all-cause mortality hazard ratio of 1.026 even when adjusted for phenotypic age. The individual-specific nature of eyeAge was reinforced via multiple GWAS hits in the UK Biobank cohort. The top GWAS locus was further validated via knockdown of the fly homolog, Alk, which slowed age-related decline in vision in flies. This study demonstrates the potential utility of a retinal aging clock for studying aging and age-related diseases and quantitatively measuring aging on very short time-scales, opening avenues for quick and actionable evaluation of gero-protective therapeutics.

Abstract: Heuristics can inform human decision making in complex environments through a reduction of computational requirements (accuracy-resource trade-off) and a robustness to overparameterisation (less-is-more). However, tasks capturing the efficiency of heuristics typically ignore action proficiency in determining rewards. The requisite movement parameterisation in sensorimotor control questions whether heuristics preserve efficiency when actions are nontrivial. We developed a novel action selection-execution task requiring joint optimisation of action selection and spatio-temporal skillful execution. State-appropriate choices could be determined by a simple spatial heuristic, or by more complex planning. Computational models of action selection parsimoniously distinguished human participants who adopted the heuristic from those using a more complex planning strategy. Broader comparative analyses then revealed that participants using the heuristic showed combined decisional (selection) and skill (execution) advantages, consistent with a less-is-more framework. In addition, the skill advantage of the heuristic group was predominantly in the core spatial features that also shaped their decision policy, evidence that the dimensions of information guiding action selection might be yoked to salient features in skill learning.

Abstract: Purpose: The aim of this study is to examine acceptable methods for choosing directions for increasing the sustainability of supply chains in construction. The study also determinate the factors affecting the sustainability of supply chains in construction Theoretical framework: Supply chain integration in many industries is based on integrated enterprise resource and relationship processing systems (ERP), but the construction industry has traditionally lagged behind in these processes. The need to create effective relationships in supply chains and increase the resilience of supply chains in construction has become evident in the context of the pandemic. However, the weak formalization of these processes in construction has led to the need to find acceptable methods for choosing directions for increasing the sustainability of supply chains in this industry. Methodology: This is a descriptive-based study. Approaches to factors of the supply chain stability were researched and systemized and from this the situations for the increasing stability of the supply chains are determinated. The choice of a model of the increasing stability of the supply chains was determined by the analytic hierarchy process. Hierarchy analysis was used as a method for selecting a scenario for increasing the sustainability of supply chains in construction. Findings: The results of the research carried out to conduct a multi-criteria choice using the opinions of experts in the construction industry. The choice of scenarios for increasing sustainability is due to the fact that the introduction of adaptive information technologies allows to take into account all groups of selected factors, while ensuring synchronization of production planning, product shipment and inventory management, increasing market feedback, ensuring that production volumes correspond to product demand, as well as reducing logistics costs and the price of products for the end customer. Abstract: The educational community boldly began to master and use digital technologies as a means of interaction with students, when organizing distance learning. Teachers began to look for new forms and methods of working with children.The aim of the study is todetermine, substantiate and experimentally verify the effectiveness of the model of distance learning implementation in out-of-school education institutions. The experiment was carried out in the period from 2021–2022 academic year on the basis of the Poltava Regional Center for Scientific and Technical Creativity of Pupil Youth of the Poltava Regional Council.118 teachers of the Poltava Regional Center of Scientific and Technical Creativity of Pupil Youth of the Poltava Regional Council took part in the survey and ranking. Research methods: analysis of scientific and methodical literature; pedagogical observation; pedagogical experiment; pedagogical testing; methods of mathematical statistics. Results of the pedagogical experiment proved the effectiveness of thedistance learning implementation model in out-of-school education institutions, which consists of theoretical, technological and reflective blocks, which is confirmed by qualitative modeling.

Abstract: Soil life supports the functioning and biodiversity of terrestrial ecosystems. Springtails (Collembola) are among the most abundant soil arthropods regulating soil fertility and flow of energy through above- and belowground food webs. However, the global distribution of springtail diversity and density, and how these relate to energy fluxes remains unknown. Here, using a global dataset representing 2470 sites, we estimate the total soil springtail biomass at 27.5 megatons carbon, which is threefold higher than wild terrestrial vertebrates, and record peak densities up to 2 million individuals per square meter in the tundra. Despite a 20-fold biomass difference between the tundra and the tropics, springtail energy use (community metabolism) remains similar across the latitudinal gradient, owing to the changes in temperature with latitude. Neither springtail density nor community metabolism is predicted by local species richness, which is high in the tropics, but comparably high in some temperate forests and even tundra. Changes in springtail activity may emerge from latitudinal gradients in temperature, predation and resource limitation in soil communities. Contrasting relationships of biomass, diversity and activity of springtail communities with temperature suggest that climate warming will alter fundamental soil biodiversity metrics in different directions, potentially restructuring terrestrial food webs and affecting soil functioning.

Abstract: The silica-based cell walls of diatoms are prime examples of genetically controlled, species-specific mineral architectures. The physical principles underlying morphogenesis of their hierarchically structured silica patterns are not understood, yet such insight could reveal novel routes towards synthesizing functional inorganic materials. Recent advances in imaging nascent diatom silica allow rationalizing possible mechanisms of their pattern formation. Here, we combine theory and experiments on the model diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana to put forward a minimal model for morphogenesis of branched rib patterns – a widespread feature of diatom cell walls. To this end, we developed an automated image analysis algorithm that enabled quantitative assessment of the morphological discrepancy between the experiments and model predictions. The model proposed here quantitatively recapitulates the time-course of rib pattern formation by accounting for silica biochemistry with autocatalytic formation of diffusible silica precursors followed by conversion into solid silica. We propose that silica deposition releases an inhibitor that slows down up-stream precursor conversion, thereby implementing a self-replicating reaction-diffusion system, recapitulated by a non-classical Turing mechanism. The proposed mechanism highlights the role of geometrical cues for guided self-organization, rationalizing the instructive role for the single initial pattern seed known as primary silicification site present in diatoms. The model features a wide spectrum of possible pattern morphologies depending on the model parameters, suggesting that this model may be applicable in other diatom species. Moreover, due to the generic nature of the proposed model for branching morphogenesis, the mechanism identified here may be relevant also in other biological systems known to exhibit.

Abstract: Mixed-ligand complexes of Co(II) and Cu(II) with rutin and glycine were synthesized and studied by the method of "block" synthesis. The composition and structure of the synthesized compounds in solutions and in the solid state were studied, and their spectral and luminescent properties were determined. It is shown that the mixed-ligand complexes have the composition MII(Gly)2(Rut), while the coordination of 3-d metal ions occurs through the catechol fragment of rutin and the carboxyl and amino groups of two glycine molecules. For complexes in solutions, luminescence was detected in the visible region of the spectrum (~500–540 nm). It is shown that 3-d metal ions quench the luminescence of rutin, but in the presence of glycinate ion, the luminescence intensity of the complexes increases. The antibacterial activity of the complexes against pathological bacteria Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, P. Aeruginosa was studied. It has been shown that the synthesized compounds have an antimicrobial effect.

In node-level problems of graph learning, distributional shifts can be especially complex since the samples are interdependent. To evaluate the performance of graph models, it is important to test them on diverse and meaningful distributional shifts. However, most graph benchmarks considering distributional shifts for node-level problems focus mainly on node features, while structural properties are also essential for graph problems. In this work, we propose a general approach for inducing diverse distributional shifts based on graph structure. We use this approach to create data splits according to several structural node properties: popularity, locality, and density. In our experiments, we thoroughly evaluate the proposed distributional shifts and show that they can be quite challenging for existing graph models. We also reveal that simple models often outperform more sophisticated methods on the considered structural shifts. Finally, our experiments provide evidence that there is a trade-off between the quality of learned representations for the base classification task under structural distributional shift and the ability to separate the nodes from different distributions using these representations.

35. A critical look at the evaluation of GNNs under heterophily: Are we really making progress?

Abstract: Node classification is a classical graph machine learning task on which Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have recently achieved strong results. However, it is often believed that standard GNNs only work well for homophilous graphs, i.e., graphs where edges tend to connect nodes of the same class. Graphs without this property are called heterophilous, and it is typically assumed that specialized methods are required to achieve strong performance on such graphs. In this work, we challenge this assumption. First, we show that the standard datasets used for evaluating heterophily-specific models have serious drawbacks, making results obtained by using them unreliable. The most significant of these drawbacks is the presence of a large number of duplicate nodes in the datasets Squirrel and Chameleon, which leads to train-test data leakage. We show that removing duplicate nodes strongly affects GNN performance on these datasets. Then, we propose a set of heterophilous graphs of varying properties that we believe can serve as a better benchmark for evaluating the performance of GNNs under heterophily. We show that standard GNNs achieve strong results on these heterophilous graphs, almost always outperforming specialized models. 36. Is This Loss Informative? Faster Text-to-Image Customization by Tracking Objective Dynamics

Abstract: Text-to-image generation models represent the next step of evolution in image synthesis, offering a natural way to achieve flexible yet fine-grained control over the result. One emerging area of research is the fast adaptation of large text-to-image models to smaller datasets or new visual concepts. However, many efficient methods of adaptation have a long training time, which limits their practical applications, slows down experiments, and spends excessive GPU resources. In this work, we study the training dynamics of popular text-to-image personalization methods (such as Textual Inversion or DreamBooth), aiming to speed them up. We observe that most concepts are learned at early stages and do not improve in quality later, but standard training convergence metrics fail to indicate that. Instead, we propose a simple drop-in early stopping criterion that only requires computing the regular training objective on a fixed set of inputs for all training iterations. Abstract: Soil life supports the functioning and biodiversity of terrestrial ecosystems. Springtails (Collembola) are among the most abundant soil arthropods regulating soil fertility and flow of energy through above- and belowground food webs. However, the global distribution of springtail diversity and density, and how these relate to energy fluxes remains unknown. Here, using a global dataset representing 2470 sites, we estimate the total soil springtail biomass at 27.5 megatons carbon, which is threefold higher than wild terrestrial vertebrates, and record peak densities up to 2 million individuals per square meter in the tundra. Despite a 20-fold biomass difference between the tundra and the tropics, springtail energy use (community metabolism) remains similar across the latitudinal gradient, owing to the changes in temperature with latitude. Neither springtail density nor community metabolism is predicted by local species richness, which is high in the tropics, but comparably high in some temperate forests and even tundra. Changes in springtail activity may emerge from latitudinal gradients in temperature, predation and resource limitation in soil communities. Contrasting relationships of biomass, diversity and activity of springtail communities with temperature suggest that climate warming will alter fundamental soil biodiversity metrics in different directions, potentially restructuring terrestrial food webs and affecting soil functioning., The article is an outcome of the #GlobalCollembola community initiative that is voluntarily supported by researchers around the world.

Abstract: AI models have shown promise in many medical imaging tasks. However, our ability to explain what signals these models have learned is severely lacking. Explanations are needed in order to increase the trust in AI-based models, and could enable novel scientific discovery by uncovering signals in the data that are not yet known to experts. In this paper, we present a method for automatic visual explanations leveraging team-based expertise by generating hypotheses of what visual signals in the images are correlated with the task. We propose the following 4 steps: (i) Train a classifier to perform a given task (ii) Train a classifier guided StyleGAN-based image generator (StylEx) (iii) Automatically detect and visualize the top visual attributes that the classifier is sensitive towards (iv) Formulate hypotheses for the underlying mechanisms, to stimulate future research. Specifically, we present the discovered attributes to an interdisciplinary panel of experts so that hypotheses can account for social and structural determinants of health. We demonstrate results on eight prediction tasks across three medical imaging modalities: retinal fundus photographs, external eye photographs, and chest radiographs. We showcase examples of attributes that capture clinically known features, confounders that arise from factors beyond physiological mechanisms, and reveal a number of physiologically plausible novel attributes. Our approach has the potential to enable researchers to better understand, improve their assessment, and extract new knowledge from AI-based models. Importantly, we highlight that attributes generated by our framework can capture phenomena beyond physiology or pathophysiology, reflecting the real world nature of healthcare delivery and socio-cultural factors. 40. Towards Real-time Text-driven Image Manipulation with Unconditional Diffusion Models

Abstract: Recent advances in diffusion models enable many powerful instruments for image editing. One of these instruments is text-driven image manipulations: editing semantic attributes of an image according to the provided text description. % Popular text-conditional diffusion models offer various high-quality image manipulation methods for a broad range of text prompts. Existing diffusion-based methods already achieve high-quality image manipulations for a broad range of text prompts. However, in practice, these methods require high computation costs even with a high-end GPU. This greatly limits potential real-world applications of diffusion-based image editing, especially when running on user devices. In this paper, we address efficiency of the recent text-driven editing methods based on unconditional diffusion models and develop a novel algorithm that learns image manipulations 4.5-10 times faster and applies them 8 times faster. We carefully evaluate the visual quality and expressiveness of our approach on multiple datasets using human annotators. Our experiments demonstrate that our algorithm achieves the quality of much more expensive methods. Finally, we show that our approach can adapt the pretrained model to the user-specified image and text description on the fly just for 4 seconds. In this setting, we notice that more compact unconditional diffusion models can be considered as a rational alternative to the popular text-conditional counterparts.

Key concerns include data safety, human consciousness manipulations, cyber-security threats, the 'digital divide', algorithmic biases, and authoritarian technology misuse. But despite these challenges, digitalization offers opportunities for human rights advancement. We can also envision comprehensive social inclusion in cyberspace, digital literacy promotion, further technological innovation, and robust ethical and legal frameworks safeguarding digital rights. Mindful AI deployment can enhance living standards, improve education and healthcare, and even extend longevity. Abstract: Mixed-ligand complexes of Co(II) and Cu(II) with rutin and glycine were synthesized and studied by the method of "block" synthesis. The composition and structure of the synthesized compounds in solutions and in the solid state were studied, and their spectral and luminescent properties were determined. It is shown that the mixed-ligand complexes have the composition MII(Gly)2(Rut), while the coordination of 3-d metal ions occurs through the catechol fragment of rutin and the carboxyl and amino groups of two glycine molecules. For complexes in solutions, luminescence was detected in the visible region of the spectrum (~500–540 nm). It is shown that 3-d metal ions quench the luminescence of rutin, but in the presence of glycinate ion, the luminescence intensity of the complexes increases. The antibacterial activity of the complexes against pathological bacteria Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, P. Aeruginosa was studied. It has been shown that the synthesized compounds have an antimicrobial effect.

44. Your Student is Better Than Expected: Adaptive Teacher-Student Collaboration for Text-Conditional Diffusion Models

Abstract: Knowledge distillation methods have recently shown to be a promising direction to speedup the synthesis of large-scale diffusion models by requiring only a few inference steps. While several powerful distillation methods were recently proposed, the overall quality of student samples is typically lower compared to the teacher ones, which hinders their practical usage. In this work, we investigate the relative quality of samples produced by the teacher text-to-image diffusion model and its distilled student version. As our main empirical finding, we discover that a noticeable portion of student samples exhibit superior fidelity compared to the teacher ones, despite the "approximate" nature of the student. Based on this finding, we propose an adaptive collaboration between student and teacher diffusion models for effective text-to-image synthesis. Specifically, the distilled model produces the initial sample, and then an oracle decides whether it needs further improvements with a slow teacher model. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the designed pipeline surpasses state-of-the-art text-to-image alternatives for various inference budgets in terms of human preference. Abstract: Deep learning (DL) models for tabular data problems (e.g. classification, regression) are currently receiving increasingly more attention from researchers. However, despite the recent efforts, the non-DL algorithms based on gradient-boosted decision trees (GBDT) remain a strong go-to solution for these problems. One of the research directions aimed at improving the position of tabular DL involves designing so-called retrieval-augmented models. For a target object, such models retrieve other objects (e.g. the nearest neighbors) from the available training data and use their features and labels to make a better prediction. In this work, we present TabR -- essentially, a feed-forward network with a custom k-Nearest-Neighbors-like component in the middle. On a set of public benchmarks with datasets up to several million objects, TabR marks a big step forward for tabular DL: it demonstrates the best average performance among tabular DL models, becomes the new state-of-the-art on several datasets, and even outperforms GBDT models on the recently proposed "GBDT-friendly" benchmark (see Figure 1). Among the important findings and technical details powering TabR, the main ones lie in the attention-like mechanism that is responsible for retrieving the nearest neighbors and extracting valuable signal from them. Abstract: As a rule, modern approaches to protecting against cyberattacks do not guarantee the impossibility of compromising applications and operating systems. Therefore, detection and identification of vulnerabilities, and actions to avoid or mitigate their impact on businesses and cybersecurity processes are critical for the operation of information systems and the information security management system. To identify a possible attack vector, as a rule, the following methods could be applied: either those that allow detecting abuses or that allow detecting anomalies. This paper investigates the possibility of identifying the alleged attack vector based on the entropy analysis of cybersecurity events. The research results presented in the paper allow us to determine the required width of the sliding window and confirm that such entropy analysis detects exceeding security thresholds and anomalies in the operation of operating systems and applications and, accordingly, probable attack vectors. © 2022 Copyright for this paper by its authors. 48. Tracking interfacial changes of graphene/Ge(1 1 0) during in-vacuum annealing

Abstract: Graphene quality indicators obtained by Raman spectroscopy have been correlated to the structural changes of the graphene/germanium interface as a function of in-vacuum thermal annealing. Specifically, it was found that graphene becomes markedly defective at 650 °C. By combining scanning tunneling microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, we concluded that these defects are due to the release of H2 gas trapped at the graphene/germanium interface. The H2 gas was produced following the transition from the as-grown hydrogen-termination of the Ge(1 1 0) surface to the emergence of surface reconstructions in the substrate. Interestingly, a complete self-healing process was observed in graphene upon annealing at 800 °C. The identified subtle interplay between the microscopic changes occurring at the graphene/germanium interface and graphene's defect density is integral to advancing the understanding of graphene growth directly on semiconductor substrates, controlled 2D-3D heterogeneous materials interfacing and integrated fabrication technology.
