1. Rethinking legislation to cope with transboundary crisis

Abstract: Societies are increasingly subject to transboundary crises that pose new challengesto crisis management and require a structural rethinking of longstanding arrange-ments. This study explores which governance aspects could be embedded inlegislation to facilitate the organization of such transboundary crisis management. Itbuilds upon research findings from the comprehensive 2020 governmentalevaluation study of the Safety Regions Act in the Netherlands and the relevantliterature. First, we provide a framework for a systematic study of the relationshipbetween law and practice. Second, we present a model on how legislation for crisismanagement could be adapted to better fit with transboundary crises. This consistsof a set of 10 key aspects categorized into five pillars: the interconnectedness of thevarious phases of crisis management and risk assessments as a starting point; flexiblecrisis management organization and network collaboration; allocated facilitator andexceptional decision‐making power; professional competences and netcentricinformation management; and learning capacities and democratic feedback. 2. Using Chao's Estimator as a Stopping Criterion for Technology-Assisted Review

Abstract: Technology-Assisted Review (TAR) aims to reduce the human effort required for screening processes such as abstract screening for systematic literature reviews. Human reviewers label documents as relevant or irrelevant during this process, while the system incrementally updates a prediction model based on the reviewers' previous decisions. After each model update, the system proposes new documents it deems relevant, to prioritize relevant documentsover irrelevant ones. A stopping criterion is necessary to guide users in stopping the review process to minimize the number of missed relevant documents and the number of read irrelevant documents. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a new ensemble-based Active Learning strategy and a stopping criterion based on Chao's Population Size Estimator that estimates the prevalence of relevant documents in the dataset. Our simulation study demonstrates that this criterion performs well on several datasets and is compared to other methods presented in the literature.

Abstract: Purpose: Arterial spin labeling (ASL) is a widely used contrast-free MRI method for assessing cerebral blood flow (CBF). Despite the generally adopted ASL acquisition guidelines, there is still wide variability in ASL analysis. We explored this variability through the ISMRM-OSIPI ASL-MRI Challenge, aiming to establish best practices for more reproducible ASL analysis. Methods: Eight teams analyzed the challenge data, which included a high-resolution T1-weighted anatomical image and 10 pseudo-continuous ASL datasets simulated using a digital reference object to generate ground-truth CBF values in normal and pathological states. We compared the accuracy of CBF quantification from each team's analysis to the ground truth across all voxels and within predefined brain regions. Reproducibility of CBF across analysis pipelines was assessed using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), limits of agreement (LOA), and replicability of generating similar CBF estimates from different processing approaches. Results: Absolute errors in CBF estimates compared to ground-truth synthetic data ranged from 18.36 to 48.12 mL/100 g/min. Realistic motion incorporated into three datasets produced the largest absolute error and variability between teams, with the least agreement (ICC and LOA) with ground-truth results. Fifty percent of the submissions were replicated, and one produced three times larger CBF errors (46.59 mL/100 g/min) compared to submitted results. Conclusions: Variability in CBF measurements, influenced by differences in image processing, especially to compensate for motion, highlights the significance of standardizing ASL analysis workflows. We provide a recommendation for ASL processing based on top-performing approaches as a step toward ASL standardization.

Abstract: Background: Establishing collaborations between cohort studies has been fundamental for progress in health research. However, such collaborations are hampered by heterogeneous data representations across cohorts and legal constraints to data sharing. The first arises from a lack of consensus in standards of data collection and representation across cohort studies and is usually tackled by applying data harmonization processes. The second is increasingly important due to raised awareness for privacy protection and stricter regulations, such as the GDPR. Federated learning has emerged as a privacy-preserving alternative to transferring data between institutions through analyzing data in a decentralized manner. Methods: In this study, we set up a federated learning infrastructure for a consortium of nine Dutch cohorts with appropriate data available to the etiology of dementia, including an extract, transform, and load (ETL) pipeline for data harmonization. Additionally, we assessed the challenges of transforming and standardizing cohort data using the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) common data model (CDM) and evaluated our tool in one of the cohorts employing federated algorithms. Results: We successfully applied our ETL tool and observed a complete coverage of the cohorts’ data by the OMOP CDM. The OMOP CDM facilitated the data representation and standardization, but we identified limitations for cohort-specific data fields and in the scope of the vocabularies available. Specific challenges arise in a multi-cohort federated collaboration due to technical constraints in local environments, data heterogeneity, and lack of direct access to the data. Conclusion: In this article, we describe the solutions to these challenges and limitations encountered in our study. Our study shows the potential of federated learning as a privacy-preserving solution for multi-cohort studies that enhance reproducibility and reuse of both data and analyses.

7. The lactococcal ICE-ome encodes a repertoire of exchangeable traits with potential industrial relevance

Abstract: Dairy industries apply selected lactococcal strains and mixed cultures to produce diverse fermented products with distinctive flavor and texture properties. Innovation of the starter culture functionality in cheese applications embraces natural biodiversity of the Lactococcus species to identify novel strains with alternative flavor or texture forming capacities and/or increased processing robustness and phage resistance. Mobile genetic elements (MGE), like integrative conjugative elements (ICEs) play an important role in shaping the biodiversity of bacteria. Besides the genes involved in the conjugation of ICEs from donor to recipient strains, these elements also harbor cargo genes that encode a wide range of functions. The definition of such cargo genes can only be achieved by accurate identification of the ICE boundaries (delimiting). Here, we delimited 25 ICEs in lactococcal genome sequences with low contig numbers using insertion-sites flanking single-copy core-genome genes as markers for each of the distinct ICE-integrases we identified previously within the conserved ICE-core genes. For ICEs in strains for which genome information with large numbers of contigs is available, we exemplify that CRISPR-Cas9 driven ICE-curing, followed by resequencing, allows accurate delimitation and cargo definition of ICEs. Finally, we compare and contrast the cargo gene repertoire of the 26 delimited lactococcal ICEs, identifying high plasticity among the cargo of lactococccal ICEs and a range of encoded functions that is of apparent industrial interest, including restriction modification, abortive infection, and stress adaptation genes.

8. Back to the future; Het geven van betekenis aan een reorganisatie die terug beweegt naar hoe het was

Abstract: In dit interpretatieve onderzoek is onderzocht hoe medewerkers van KLM E&M, werkzaam binnen de afdeling Airframe, de recente organisatieverandering naar de Narrow Body en Wide Body units hebben ervaren. De vorige organisatievorm was niet effectief, waardoor een reorganisatie noodzakelijk werd en nieuwe teams moesten worden gevormd. De bijbehorende hoofdvraag in dit onderzoek die hieruit voortkomt luidt: Hoe wordt de verandering in teamstructuur ervaren en hoe is dit van invloed op de veiligheid en de werkbeleving van werknemers in de eerste fase van de verandering binnen KLM Airframe? De hoofdvraag is beantwoord door middel van 12 semigestructureerde interviews, 2 observaties en een documentanalyse. Uit de bevindingen is gebleken dat er verschillende ervaringen zijn omtrent de aanpak en verandering in teamstructuur. Hoe werknemers betekenis geven aan de verandering wordt beïnvloed door de individuele ervaringen, context van de medewerker en de rol die iemand vervult binnen de organisatie. Er zijn werknemers die de verandering zien als het deels terug veranderen naar een oude organisatievorm, waardoor ze een veiliger gevoel ervaren en meer tevreden zijn. Er zijn ook medewerkers uit hun vertrouwde omgeving gehaald, die meer stress en een daling in motivatie en werktevredenheid hebben ervaren. De invloed van eerdere veranderingen is hierbij groot, waarbij tevens de houding richting het management en KLM is veranderd. Daarbij ervaren medewerkers een wij-zij gevoel tussen de verschillende hangars en tussen de werkvloer en het management, wat van invloed is op de huidige verandering. De impact van de verandering op de veiligheid en werkbeleving hangt dus af van hoe individuen deze verandering ervaren en wat er specifiek veranderd is. Enkele aanbevelingen die hieruit voortvloeien zijn het zorgen voor een brede betrokkenheid onder de werknemers en het stimuleren van binding tussen en binnen hangars en tussen management en werkvloer. While the recommended guideline for ASL acquisition is generally adopted to standardize quantification of CBF, ASL analysis still produces wide variability in CBF estimates, limiting research and clinical interpretation of ASL results. This study explored the extent of variability in ASL CBF quantification through the ISMRM OSIPI ASL MRI Challenge. The goal of the challenge was to minimize sources of variability in ASL analysis by establishing best practice in ASL data processing to make ASL analysis more reproducible and clinically meaningful. Methods: Eight international teams analyzed the challenge data consisting of a high-resolution T1- weighted anatomical image and ten pseudo-continuous ASL (PCASL) datasets. The datasets were simulated using an ASL digital reference object to produce ground-truth CBF values in normal and pathological states. The accuracy of CBF quantification from each team’s analysis was compared to ground-truth values across all voxels and within pre-defined brain regions. Abstract: Background: The role of small vessel disease in the development of dementia is not yet completely understood. Functional brain connectivity has been shown to differ between individuals with and without cerebral small vessel disease. However, a comprehensive measure of small vessel disease quantifying the overall damage on the brain is not consistently used and studies using such measure in mild cognitive impairment individuals are missing. Method: Functional brain connectivity differences were analyzed between mild cognitive impairment individuals with absent or low (n = 34) and high (n = 34) small vessel disease burden using data from the Parelsnoer Institute, a Dutch multicenter study. Small vessel disease was characterized using an ordinal scale considering: lacunes, microbleeds, perivascular spaces in the basal ganglia, and white matter hyperintensities. Resting state functional MRI data using 3 Tesla scanners was analyzed with group-independent component analysis using the CONN toolbox. Results: Functional connectivity between areas of the cerebellum and between the cerebellum and the thalamus and caudate nucleus was higher in the absent or low small vessel disease group compared to the high small vessel disease group. Conclusion: These findings might suggest that functional connectivity of mild cognitive impairment individuals with low or absent small vessel disease burden is more intact than in mild cognitive impairment individuals with high small vessel disease. These brain areas are mainly responsible for motor, attentional and executive functions, domains which in previous studies were found to be mostly associated with small vessel disease markers. Our results support findings on the involvement of the cerebellum in cognitive functioning.

Abstract: Imaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease provide valuable information on brain health, but their manual assessment is time-consuming and hampered by substantial intra-and interrater variability. Automated rating may benefit biomedical research, as well as clinical assessment, but diagnostic reliability of existing algorithms is unknown. Here, we present the results of the VAscular Lesions DetectiOn and Segmentation (Where is VALDO?) challenge that was run as a satellite event at the international conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Aided Intervention (MICCAI) 2021. This challenge aimed to promote the development of methods for automated detection and segmentation of small and sparse imaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease, namely enlarged perivascular spaces (EPVS) (Task 1), cerebral microbleeds (Task 2) and lacunes of presumed vascular origin (Task 3) while leveraging weak and noisy labels. Overall, 12 teams participated in the challenge proposing solutions for one or more tasks (4 for Task 1-EPVS, 9 for Task 2-Microbleeds and 6 for Task 3Lacunes). Multi-cohort data was used in both training and evaluation. Results showed a large variability in performance both across teams and across tasks, with promising results notably for Task 1-EPVS and Task 2-Microbleeds and not practically useful results yet for Task 3-Lacunes. It also highlighted the performance inconsistency across cases that may deter use at an individual level, while still proving useful at a population level.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion is one of the assumed pathophysiological mechanisms underlying vascular cognitive impairment (VCI). We investigated the association between baseline cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cognitive decline after 2 years in patients with VCI and reference participants. METHODS:One hundred eighty-one participants (mean age 66.3 ± 7.4 years, 43.6% women) underwent arterial spin labeling (ASL) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and neuropsychological assessment at baseline and at 2-year follow-up. We determined the association between baseline global and lobar CBF and cognitive decline with multivariable regression analysis. RESULTS: Lower global CBF at baseline was associated with more global cognitive decline in VCI and reference participants. This association was most profound in the domain of attention/psychomotor speed. Lower temporal and frontal CBF at baseline were associated with more cognitive decline in memory. DISCUSSION: Our study supports the role of hypoperfusion in the pathophysiological and clinical progression of VCI. Highlights: Impaired cerebral blood flow (CBF) at baseline is associated with faster cognitive decline in VCI and normal aging. Our results suggest that low CBF precedes and contributes to the development of vascular cognitive impairment. CBF determined by ASL might be used as a biomarker to monitor disease progression or treatment responses in VCI.

Abstract: Februari was recordwarm. Door de hoge temperaturen zijn ook teken actief geworden. Van de mensen die wekelijks via Tekenradar.nl doorgeven of ze een tekenbeet hebben opgelopen, liep 2 tot 3 procent een tekenbeet op. Er zijn ook al enkele meldingen van de ziekte van Lyme. Om de tekendynamiek beter te onderzoeken roept Tekenradar mensen op om wekelijks door te geven of ze wel of niet gebeten zijn.

Vanuit Gelderland werd het hoogste absolute aantal gemeld. De helft van de tekenbeten werd opgelopen in het bos. Een derde in de tuin. Nu start onderzoek via Tekenradar naar hoe de Lymebacterie ons afweersysteem misleidt.

Abstract: Recordwarm en extreem nat. Het voorjaar verloopt optimaal voor de ontwikkeling van muggen. De overwinterende muggen zijn waarschijnlijk zeer vroeg begonnen met het leggen van eitjes. De eerste lichting muggen kwam zo’n 1,5 week geleden tevoorschijn. Door de vele en aanhoudende regen waren zeer veel broedplaatsen beschikbaar. Als echte droogte uitblijft, is een muggenrijke zomer te verwachten.

Abstract: Most low-mass stars form in stellar clusters that also contain massive stars, which are sources of far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation. Theoretical models predict that this FUV radiation produces photodissociation regions (PDRs) on the surfaces of protoplanetary disks around low-mass stars, which affects planet formation within the disks. We report James Webb Space Telescope and Atacama Large Millimeter Array observations of a FUV-irradiated protoplanetary disk in the Orion Nebula. Emission lines are detected from the PDR; modeling their kinematics and excitation allowed us to constrain the physical conditions within the gas. We quantified the mass-loss rate induced by the FUV irradiation and found that it is sufficient to remove gas from the disk in less than a million years. This is rapid enough to affect giant planet formation in the disk.

Abstract: Lactococcus lactis is widely applied by the dairy industry for the fermentation of milk into products such as cheese. Adaptation of L. lactis to the dairy environment often depends on functions encoded by mobile genetic elements (MGEs) such as plasmids. Other L. lactis MGEs that contribute to industrially relevant traits like antimicrobial production and carbohydrate utilization capacities belong to the integrative conjugative elements (ICE). Here we investigate the prevalence of ICEs in L. lactis using an automated search engine that detects colocalized, ICE-associated core-functions (involved in conjugation or mobilization) in lactococcal genomes. This approach enabled the detection of 36 candidate-ICEs in 69 L. lactis genomes. By phylogenetic analysis of conserved protein functions encoded in all lactococcal ICEs, these 36 ICEs could be classified in three main ICE-families that encompass 7 distinguishable ICE-integrases and are characterized by apparent modular-exchangeability and plasticity. Finally, we demonstrate that phylogenetic analysis of the conjugation-associated VirB4 ATPase function differentiates ICE- and plasmid-derived conjugation systems, indicating that conjugal transfer of lactococcal ICEs and plasmids involves genetically distinct machineries. Our genomic analysis and sequence-based classification of lactococcal ICEs creates a comprehensive overview of the conserved functional repertoires encoded by this family of MGEs in L. lactis, which can facilitate the future exploitation of the functional traits they encode by ICE mobilization to appropriate starter culture strains.

Abstract: One of the main problems in astrochemistry is determining the amount of sulfur in volatiles and refractories in the interstellar medium. The detection of the main sulfur reservoirs (icy H$_2$S and atomic gas) has been challenging, and estimates are based on the reliability of models to account for the abundances of species containing less than 1% of the total sulfur. The high sensitivity of the James Webb Space Telescope provides an unprecedented opportunity to estimate the sulfur abundance through the observation of the [S I] 25.249 $\mu$m line. We used the [S III] 18.7 $\mu$m, [S IV] 10.5 $\mu$m, and [S l] 25.249 $\mu$m lines to estimate the amount of sulfur in the ionized and molecular gas along the Orion Bar. For the theoretical part, we used an upgraded version of the Meudon photodissociation region (PDR) code to model the observations. New inelastic collision rates of neutral atomic sulfur with ortho- and para- molecular hydrogen were calculated to predict the line intensities. The [S III] 18.7 $\mu$m and [S IV] 10.5 $\mu$m lines are detected over the imaged region with a shallow increase (by a factor of 4) toward the HII region. We estimate a moderate sulfur depletion, by a factor of $\sim$2, in the ionized gas. The corrugated interface between the molecular and atomic phases gives rise to several edge-on dissociation fronts we refer to as DF1, DF2, and DF3. The [S l] 25.249 $\mu$m line is only detected toward DF2 and DF3, the dissociation fronts located farthest from the HII region. The detailed modeling of DF3 using the Meudon PDR code shows that the emission of the [S l] 25.249 $\mu$m line is coming from warm ($>$ 40 K) molecular gas located at A$_{\rm V}$ $\sim$ 1$-$5 mag from the ionization front. Moreover, the intensity of the [S l] 25.249 $\mu$m line is only accounted for if we assume the presence of undepleted sulfur., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures. Abstract: Robust radiative transfer techniques are requisite for efficiently extracting the physical and chemical information from molecular rotational lines.We study several hypotheses that enable robust estimations of the column densities and physical conditions when fitting one or two transitions per molecular species. We study the extent to which simplifying assumptions aimed at reducing the complexity of the problem introduce estimation biases and how to detect them.We focus on the CO and HCO+ isotopologues and analyze maps of a 50 square arcminutes field. We used the RADEX escape probability model to solve the statistical equilibrium equations and compute the emerging line profiles, assuming that all species coexist. Depending on the considered set of species, we also fixed the abundance ratio between some species and explored different values. We proposed a maximum likelihood estimator to infer the physical conditions and considered the effect of both the thermal noise and calibration uncertainty. We analyzed any potential biases induced by model misspecifications by comparing the results on the actual data for several sets of species and confirmed with Monte Carlo simulations. The variance of the estimations and the efficiency of the estimator were studied based on the Cram{\'e}r-Rao lower bound.Column densities can be estimated with 30% accuracy, while the best estimations of the volume density are found to be within a factor of two. Under the chosen model framework, the peak 12CO(1--0) is useful for constraining the kinetic temperature. The thermal pressure is better and more robustly estimated than the volume density and kinetic temperature separately. Abstract: Mid-infrared emission features probe the properties of ionized gas, and hot or warm molecular gas. The Orion Bar is a frequently studied photodissociation region (PDR) containing large amounts of gas under these conditions, and was observed with the MIRI IFU aboard JWST as part of the "PDRs4All" program. The resulting IR spectroscopic images of high angular resolution (0.2") reveal a rich observational inventory of mid-IR emission lines, and spatially resolve the substructure of the PDR, with a mosaic cutting perpendicularly across the ionization front and three dissociation fronts. We extracted five spectra that represent the ionized, atomic, and molecular gas layers, and measured the most prominent gas emission lines. An initial analysis summarizes the physical conditions of the gas and the potential of these data. We identified around 100 lines, report an additional 18 lines that remain unidentified, and measured the line intensities and central wavelengths. The H I recombination lines originating from the ionized gas layer bordering the PDR, have intensity ratios that are well matched by emissivity coefficients from H recombination theory, but deviate up to 10% due contamination by He I lines. We report the observed emission lines of various ionization stages of Ne, P, S, Cl, Ar, Fe, and Ni, and show how certain line ratios vary between the five regions. We observe the pure-rotational H$_2$ lines in the vibrational ground state from 0-0 S(1) to 0-0 S(8), and in the first vibrationally excited state from 1-1 S(5) to 1-1 S(9). We derive H$_2$ excitation diagrams, and approximate the excitation with one thermal (~700 K) component representative of an average gas temperature, and one non-thermal component (~2700 K) probing the effect of UV pumping. Abstract: Most low-mass stars form in stellar clusters that also contain massive stars, which are sources of far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation. Theoretical models predict that this FUV radiation produces photo-dissociation regions (PDRs) on the surfaces of protoplanetary disks around low-mass stars, impacting planet formation within the disks. We report JWST and Atacama Large Millimetere Array observations of a FUV-irradiated protoplanetary disk in the Orion Nebula. Emission lines are detected from the PDR; modelling their kinematics and excitation allows us to constrain the physical conditions within the gas. We quantify the mass-loss rate induced by the FUV irradiation, finding it is sufficient to remove gas from the disk in less than a million years. This is rapid enough to affect giant planet formation in the disk.

Abstract: Imaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease provide valuable information on brain health, but their manual assessment is time-consuming and hampered by substantial intra- and interrater variability. Automated rating may benefit biomedical research, as well as clinical assessment, but diagnostic reliability of existing algorithms is unknown. Here, we present the results of the VAscular Lesions DetectiOn and Segmentation (Where is VALDO?) challenge that was run as a satellite event at the international conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Aided Intervention (MICCAI) 2021. This challenge aimed to promote the development of methods for automated detection and segmentation of small and sparse imaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease, namely enlarged perivascular spaces (EPVS) (Task 1), cerebral microbleeds (Task 2) and lacunes of presumed vascular origin (Task 3) while leveraging weak and noisy labels. Overall, 12 teams participated in the challenge proposing solutions for one or more tasks (4 for Task 1-EPVS, 9 for Task 2-Microbleeds and 6 for Task 3-Lacunes). Multi-cohort data was used in both training and evaluation. Results showed a large variability in performance both across teams and across tasks, with promising results notably for Task 1-EPVS and Task 2-Microbleeds and not practically useful results yet for Task 3-Lacunes. It also highlighted the performance inconsistency across cases that may deter use at an individual level, while still proving useful at a population level.

Abstract: The diversification of “Big Oil” into uranium mining was a product of a long, entangled history of both the oil and uranium industries. By focussing on the story of the formation of an infamous international cartel allocating the uranium prices during the 1970s, this article explores the controversial role Gulf Oil Corporation played in the uranium mining industry. It argues that Gulf Oil’s contribution to the cartel was mainly shaped by the geographical positioning of their uranium mines and the developing knowledge and technologies in the competing oil industry that helped create new economically viable uranium deposits. In this way, this article shows by combining Science and Technology Studies and Business History that the Western oil industry was not a one monolithic entity trying to “sabotage” the development of nuclear energy, but a mutually competitive market where new technologies and knowledge easily spilled over to other energy sector

Abstract: Forty years ago it was proposed that gas phase organic chemistry in the interstellar medium was initiated by the methyl cation CH3+, but hitherto it has not been observed outside the Solar System. Alternative routes involving processes on grain surfaces have been invoked. Here we report JWST observations of CH3+ in a protoplanetary disk in the Orion star forming region. Abstract: Technology-Assisted Review (TAR) aims to reduce the human effort required for screening processes such as abstract screening for systematic literature reviews. Human reviewers label documents as relevant or irrelevant during this process, while the system incrementally updates a prediction model based on the reviewers' previous decisions. After each model update, the system proposes new documents it deems relevant, to prioritize relevant documentsover irrelevant ones. A stopping criterion is necessary to guide users in stopping the review process to minimize the number of missed relevant documents and the number of read irrelevant documents. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a new ensemble-based Active Learning strategy and a stopping criterion based on Chao's Population Size Estimator that estimates the prevalence of relevant documents in the dataset. Our simulation study demonstrates that this criterion performs well on several datasets and is compared to other methods presented in the literature.

Abstract: (Abridged) Massive stars can determine the evolution of molecular clouds with their strong ultraviolet (UV) radiation fields. Moreover, UV radiation is relevant in setting the thermal gas pressure in star-forming clouds, whose influence can extend from the rims of molecular clouds to entire star-forming galaxies. Probing the fundamental structure of nearby molecular clouds is therefore crucial to understand how massive stars shape their surrounding medium and how fast molecular clouds are destroyed, specifically at their UV-illuminated edges, where models predict an intermediate zone of neutral atomic gas between the molecular cloud and the surrounding ionized gas whose size is directly related to the exposed physical conditions. We present the highest angular resolution (~$0.5$", corresponding to $207$ au) and velocity-resolved images of the molecular gas emission in the Horsehead nebula, using CO J=3-2 and HCO$^+$ J=4-3 observations with ALMA. We find that CO and HCO$^+$ are present at the edge of the cloud, very close to the ionization (H$^+$/H) and dissociation fronts (H/H$_2$), suggesting a very thin layer of neutral atomic gas (<$650$ au) and a small amount of CO-dark gas ($A_V=0.006-0.26$ mag) for stellar UV illumination conditions typical of molecular clouds in the Milky Way. The new ALMA observations reveal a web of molecular gas filaments with an estimated thermal gas pressure of $P_{\mathrm{th}} = (2.3 - 4.0) \times 10^6$ K cm$^{-3}$, and the presence of a steep density gradient at the cloud edge that can be well explained by stationary isobaric PDR models with pressures consistent with our estimations. However, in the HII region and PDR interface, we find $P_{\mathrm{th,PDR}} > P_{\mathrm{th,HII}}$, suggesting the gas is slightly compressed. Therefore, dynamical effects cannot be completely ruled out and even higher angular observations will be needed to unveil their role.

Abstract: The interpretation of observations of atomic and molecular tracers in the galactic and extragalactic interstellar medium (ISM) requires comparisons with state-of-the-art astrophysical models to infer some physical conditions. Usually, ISM models are too time-consuming for such inference procedures, as they call for numerous model evaluations. As a result, they are often replaced by an interpolation of a grid of precomputed models. We propose a new general method to derive faster, lighter, and more accurate approximations of the model from a grid of precomputed models. These emulators are defined with artificial neural networks (ANNs) designed and trained to address the specificities inherent in ISM models. Indeed, such models often predict many observables (e.g., line intensities) from just a few input physical parameters and can yield outliers due to numerical instabilities or physical bistabilities. We propose applying five strategies to address these characteristics: 1) an outlier removal procedure; 2) a clustering method that yields homogeneous subsets of lines that are simpler to predict with different ANNs; 3) a dimension reduction technique that enables to adequately size the network architecture; 4) the physical inputs are augmented with a polynomial transform to ease the learning of nonlinearities; and 5) a dense architecture to ease the learning of simple relations. We compare the proposed ANNs with standard classes of interpolation methods to emulate the Meudon PDR code, a representative ISM numerical model. Combinations of the proposed strategies outperform all interpolation methods by a factor of 2 on the average error, reaching 4.5% on the Meudon PDR code. These networks are also 1000 times faster than accurate interpolation methods and require ten to forty times less memory. This work will enable efficient inferences on wide-field multiline observations of the ISM.

Abstract: We present 5 deg^2 (~250 pc^2) HCN, HNC, HCO+, and CO J=1-0 maps of the Orion B GMC, complemented with existing wide-field [CI] 492 GHz maps, as well as new pointed observations of rotationally excited HCN, HNC, H13CN, and HN13C lines. We detect anomalous HCN J=1-0 hyperfine structure line emission almost everywhere in the cloud. About 70% of the total HCN J=1-0 luminosity arises from gas at A_V < 8 mag. The HCN/CO J=1-0 line intensity ratio shows a bimodal behavior with an inflection point at A_V < 3 mag typical of translucent gas and UV-illuminated cloud edges. We find that most of the HCN J=1-0 emission arises from extended gas with n(H2) ~< 10^4 cm^-3, even lower density gas if the ionization fraction is > 10^-5 and electron excitation dominates. This result explains the low-A_V branch of the HCN/CO J=1-0 intensity ratio distribution. Indeed, the highest HCN/CO ratios (~0.1) at A_V < 3 mag correspond to regions of high [CI] 492 GHz/CO J=1-0 intensity ratios (>1) characteristic of low-density PDRs. Enhanced FUV radiation favors the formation and excitation of HCN on large scales, not only in dense star-forming clumps. The low surface brightness HCN and HCO+ J=1-0 emission scale with I_FIR (a proxy of the stellar FUV radiation field) in a similar way. Together with CO J=1-0, these lines respond to increasing I_FIR up to G0~20. On the other hand, the bright HCN J=1-0 emission from dense gas in star-forming clumps weakly responds to I_FIR once the FUV radiation field becomes too intense (G0>1500). The different power law scalings (produced by different chemistries, densities, and line excitation regimes) in a single but spatially resolved GMC resemble the variety of Kennicutt-Schmidt law indexes found in galaxy averages. As a corollary for extragalactic studies, we conclude that high HCN/CO J=1-0 line intensity ratios do not always imply the presence of dense gas.

Abstract: Context. The availability of large bandwidth receivers for millimeter radio telescopes allows the acquisition of position-position-frequency data cubes over a wide field of view and a broad frequency coverage. These cubes contain much information on the physical, chemical, and kinematical properties of the emitting gas. However, their large size coupled with inhomogenous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are major challenges for consistent analysis and interpretation.Aims. We search for a denoising method of the low SNR regions of the studied data cubes that would allow to recover the low SNR emission without distorting the signals with high SNR.Methods. We perform an in-depth data analysis of the 13 CO and C 17 O (1 -- 0) data cubes obtained as part of the ORION-B large program performed at the IRAM 30m telescope. We analyse the statistical properties of the noise and the evolution of the correlation of the signal in a given frequency channel with that of the adjacent channels. This allows us to propose significant improvements of typical autoassociative neural networks, often used to denoise hyperspectral Earth remote sensing data. Applying this method to the 13 CO (1 -- 0) cube, we compare the denoised data with those derived with the multiple Gaussian fitting algorithm ROHSA, considered as the state of the art procedure for data line cubes.Results. The nature of astronomical spectral data cubes is distinct from that of the hyperspectral data usually studied in the Earth remote sensing literature because the observed intensities become statistically independent beyond a short channel separation. This lack of redundancy in data has led us to adapt the method, notably by taking into account the sparsity of the signal along the spectral axis. 34. The cognitive context of sensorimotor synchronisation

Abstract: The cognitive context of sensorimotor synchronisation (SMS) starts with the assumption that performance of relatively simple behaviour emerges through the background noise of a psychological context. Despite progress, and growth in understanding of the component sources of variability in cognition, perception and action, the role of more executive cognitive processes have not yet been well integrated to successful models of sensorimotor synchronisation. This thesis presents a series of studies investigating more precisely the role of executive control functions on the variability of repetitive production of movements. The findings of the 5 experiments presented are discussed in relation to existent theories and ongoing debates in the field of sensorimotor synchronisation. The contribution of this research highlights the importance of executive processes often overlooked when assessing the nature of variability in rhythmic movement production and opens some clear pathways for future research, adjustments to current models used, and novel paradigms.

Abstract: Understanding the initial properties of star-forming material and how they affect the star formation process is key. From an observational point of view, the feedback from young high-mass stars on future star formation properties is still poorly constrained. In the framework of the IRAM 30m ORION-B large program, we obtained observations of the translucent and moderately dense gas, which we used to analyze the kinematics over a field of 5 deg^2 around the filamentary structures. We used the ROHSA algorithm to decompose and de-noise the C18O(1-0) and 13CO(1-0) signals by taking the spatial coherence of the emission into account. We produced gas column density and mean velocity maps to estimate the relative orientation of their spatial gradients. We identified three cloud velocity layers at different systemic velocities and extracted the filaments in each velocity layer. The filaments are preferentially located in regions of low centroid velocity gradients. By comparing the relative orientation between the column density and velocity gradients of each layer from the ORION-B observations and synthetic observations from 3D kinematic toy models, we distinguish two types of behavior in the dynamics around filaments: (i) radial flows perpendicular to the filament axis that can be either inflows (increasing the filament mass) or outflows and (ii) longitudinal flows along the filament axis. The former case is seen in the Orion B data, while the latter is not identified. We have also identified asymmetrical flow patterns, usually associated with filaments located at the edge of an HII region. This is the first observational study to highlight feedback from HII regions on filament formation and, thus, on star formation in the Orion B cloud. This simple statistical method can be used for any molecular cloud to obtain coherent information on the kinematics.

Abstract: Massive stars disrupt their natal molecular cloud material through radiative and mechanical feedback processes. These processes have profound effects on the evolution of interstellar matter in our Galaxy and throughout the universe, from the era of vigorous star formation at redshifts of 1-3 to the present day. The dominant feedback processes can be probed by observations of the Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs) where the far-ultraviolet photons of massive stars create warm regions of gas and dust in the neutral atomic and molecular gas. PDR emission provides a unique tool to study in detail the physical and chemical processes that are relevant for most of the mass in inter-and circumstellar media including diffuse clouds, proto-planetary disks, and molecular cloud surfaces, globules, planetary nebulae, and star-forming regions. PDR emission dominates the infrared (IR) spectra of star-forming galaxies. Most of the Galactic and extragalactic observations obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will therefore arise in PDR emission. In this paper we present an Early Release Science program using the MIRI, NIRSpec, and NIRCam instruments dedicated to the observations of an emblematic and nearby PDR: the Orion Bar. These early JWST observations will provide template data sets designed to identify key PDR characteristics in JWST observations. These data will serve to benchmark PDR models and extend them into the JWST era. We also present the Science-Enabling products that we will provide to the community. These template data sets and Science-Enabling products will guide the preparation of future proposals on star-forming regions in our Galaxy and beyond and will facilitate data analysis and interpretation of forthcoming JWST observations.

Abstract: Bunyaviruses are enveloped negative or ambisense single-stranded RNA viruses with a genome divided into several segments. The canonical view depicts each viral particle packaging one copy of each genomic segment in one polarity named the viral strand. Several opposing observations revealed nonequal ratios of the segments, uneven number of segments per virion, and even packaging of viral complementary strands. Unfortunately, these observations result from studies often addressing other questions, on distinct viral species, and not using accurate quantitative methods. Hence, what RNA segments and strands are packaged as the genome of any bunyavirus remains largely ambiguous. We addressed this issue by first investigating the virion size distribution and RNA content in populations of the tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) using microscopy and tomography. These revealed heterogeneity in viral particle volume and amount of RNA content, with a surprising lack of correlation between the two. Then, the ratios of all genomic segments and strands were established using RNA sequencing and qRT-PCR. Within virions, both plus and minus strands (but no mRNA) are packaged for each of the three L, M, and S segments, in reproducible nonequimolar proportions determined by those in total cell extracts. These results show that virions differ in their genomic content but together build up a highly reproducible genetic composition of the viral population. This resembles the genome formula described for multipartite viruses, with which some species of the order Bunyavirales may share some aspects of the way of life, particularly emerging properties at a supravirion scale.

Abstract: Geriatric screening and geriatric assessment (GS/GA) have proven their benefits in the care for older patients with cancer. However, less is known about the predictive value of GS/GA for outcomes. To research this, clinical data on GS/GA can be enriched with population-based data. In this article we describe the methods and feasibility of data linkage, and first clinical outcomes (GS/GA results and overall survival). A large cohort study consisting of patients aged ≥70 years with a new cancer diagnosis was established using linked data from clinical and population-based databases. Clinical data were derived from a previous prospective study where older patients with cancer were screened with G8, followed by GA in case of an abnormal result (GS/GA study; 2009-2015). These data were linked to cancer registration data from the Belgian Cancer Registry (BCR), reimbursement data of the health insurance companies (InterMutualistic Agency, IMA), and hospital discharge data (Technical Cell, TCT). Cox regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the prognostic value of the G8 geriatric screening tool. Of the 8067 eligible patients with a new cancer diagnosis, linkage of data from the GS/GA study and data from the BCR was successful for 93.7%, resulting in a cohort of 7556 patients available for the current analysis. Further linkage with the IMA and TCT database resulted in a cohort of 7314 patients (96.8%). Based on G8 geriatric screening, 67.9% of the patients had a geriatric risk profile. Malnutrition and functional dependence were the most common GA-identified risk factors. An abnormal baseline G8 score (≤14/17) was associated with lower overall survival (adjusted HR [aHR] = 1.62 [1.50-1.75], p < 0.001). Linking clinical and population-based databases for older patients with cancer has shown to be feasible. Abstract: Disease and parasitism cause major welfare, environmental and economic concerns for global aquaculture. In this review, we examine the status and potential of technologies that exploit genetic variation in host resistance to tackle this problem. We argue that there is an urgent need to improve understanding of the genetic mechanisms involved, leading to the development of tools that can be applied to boost host resistance and reduce the disease burden. We draw on two pressing global disease problems as case studies-sea lice infestations in salmonids and white spot syndrome in shrimp. We review how the latest genetic technologies can be capitalised upon to determine the mechanisms underlying inter- and intra-species variation in pathogen/parasite resistance, and how the derived knowledge could be applied to boost disease resistance using selective breeding, gene editing and/or with targeted feed treatments and vaccines. Gene editing brings novel opportunities, but also implementation and dissemination challenges, and necessitates new protocols to integrate the technology into aquaculture breeding programmes. There is also an ongoing need to minimise risks of disease agents evolving to overcome genetic improvements to host resistance, and insights from epidemiological and evolutionary models of pathogen infestation in wild and cultured host populations are explored. Ethical issues around the different approaches for achieving genetic resistance are discussed. Application of genetic technologies and approaches has potential to improve fundamental knowledge of mechanisms affecting genetic resistance and provide effective pathways for implementation that could lead to more resistant aquaculture stocks, transforming global aquaculture.

Abstract: Background : Approximately one-third of patients with symptomatic severe aortic valve stenosis who are scheduled for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) have some degree of cognitive impairment. TAVI may have negative cognitive effects due to periprocedural micro-emboli inducing cerebral infarction. On the contrary, TAVI may also have positive cognitive effects due to increases in cardiac output and cerebral blood flow (CBF). However, studies that systematically assess these effects are scarce. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to assess cerebral and cognitive outcomes in patients with severe aortic valve stenosis undergoing TAVI. Study design : In the prospective CAPITA (CArdiac OutPut, Cerebral Blood Flow and Cognition In Patients With Severe Aortic Valve Stenosis Undergoing Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) study, cerebral and cognitive outcomes are assessed in patients undergoing TAVI. One day before and 3 months after TAVI, patients will undergo echocardiography (cardiac output, valve function), brain magnetic resonance imaging (CBF, structural lesions) and extensive neuropsychological assessment. To assess longer-term effects of TAVI, patients will again undergo echocardiography and neuropsychological assessment 1 year after the procedure. The co-primary outcome measures are change in CBF (in ml/100 g per min) and change in global cognitive functioning (Z-score) between baseline and 3‑month follow-up. Secondary objectives include change in cardiac output, white matter hyperintensities and other structural brain lesions. (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT05481008) Conclusion : The CAPITA study is the first study designed to systematically assess positive and negative cerebral and cognitive outcomes after TAVI. We hypothesise that TAVI improves cardiac output, CBF and cognitive functioning.

Abstract: Following their discovery at the end of the 20th century, extracellular vesicles (EVs) ranging from 50-1,000 nm have proven to be paramount in the progression of many cancers, including hematological malignancies. EVs are a heterogeneous group of cell-derived membranous structures that include small EVs (commonly called exosomes) and large EVs (microparticles). They have been demonstrated to participate in multiple physiological and pathological processes by allowing exchange of biological material (including among others proteins, DNA and RNA) between cells. They are therefore a crucial way of intercellular communication. In this context, malignant cells can release these extracellular vesicles that can influence their microenvironment, induce the formation of a tumorigenic niche, and prepare and establish distant niches facilitating metastasis by significantly impacting the phenotypes of surrounding cells and turning them toward supportive roles. In addition, EVs are also able to manipulate the immune response and to establish an immunosuppressive microenvironment. This in turn allows for ideal conditions for heightened chemoresistance and increased disease burden. Here, we review the latest findings and reports studying the effects and therapeutic potential of extracellular vesicles in various hematological malignancies. Abstract: Computer-aided methods have shown added value for diagnosing and predicting brain disorders and can thus support decision making in clinical care and treatment planning. This chapter will provide insight into the type of methods, their working, their input data –such as cognitive tests, imaging, and genetic data– and the types of output they provide. We will focus on specific use cases for diagnosis, i.e., estimating the current “condition” of the patient, such as early detection and diagnosis of dementia, differential diagnosis of brain tumors, and decision making in stroke. Regarding prediction, i.e., estimation of the future “condition” of the patient, we will zoom in on use cases such as predicting the disease course in multiple sclerosis and predicting patient outcomes after treatment in brain cancer. 44. Density Field Reconstruction of an Overexpanded Supersonic Jet using Tomographic Background-Oriented Schlieren

Abstract: A Tomographic Background-Oriented Schlieren (TBOS) technique is developed to aid in the visualization of compressible flows. An experimental setup was devised around a sub-scale rocket nozzle, in which four cameras were set up in a circular configuration with 30° angular spacing in azimuth. Measurements were taken of the overexpanded supersonic jet plume at various nozzle pressure ratios (NPR), corresponding to different flow regimes during the start-up and shut-down of rocket nozzles. Measurements were also performed for different camera parameters using different exposure times and f-stops in order to study the effect of measurement accuracy. Density gradients and subsequently two-dimensional line-of-sight integrated density fields for each of the camera projections are recovered from the index of refraction field by solving a Poisson equation. The results of this stage are then used to reconstruct two-dimensional slices of the (time-averaged) density field using a tomographic reconstruction algorithm employing the filtered back-projection and the simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique. By stacking these two-dimensional slices, the (quasi-) three-dimensional density field is obtained. The accuracy of the implemented method with a relatively low number of sparse cameras is briefly assessed and basic flow features are extracted such as the shock spacing in the overexpanded jet plume., For access to the data, please contact the authors. The outcome reported is the median of the probability ranges provided by the experts, which indicates whether each criterion is fulfilled (lower bound ≥?66%) or not (upper bound ≤?33%), or whether there is uncertainty about fulfilment. Reasoning points are reported for criteria with an uncertain outcome. According to the assessment here performed, it is uncertain whether infection with G.?salaris can be considered eligible to be listed for Union intervention according to Article 5 of the AHL (33?70% probability). Abstract: Nearby Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs), where the gas and dust are heated by the far UV-irradiation emitted from stars, are ideal templates to study the main stellar feedback processes. With this study we aim to probe the detailed structures at the interfaces between ionized, atomic, and molecular gas in the Orion Bar. This nearby prototypical strongly irradiated PDR will be among the first targets of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) within the framework of the PDRs4All Early Release Science program. We employed the sub-arcsec resolution accessible with Keck-II NIRC2 and its adaptive optics system to obtain the most detailed and complete images, ever performed, of the vibrationally excited line H$_2$ 1-0 S(1) at 2.12~$\mu$m, tracing the dissociation front, and the [FeII] and Br$\gamma$ lines, at 1.64 and 2.16~$\mu$m respectively, tracing the ionization front. We obtained narrow-band filter images in these key gas line diagnostic over $\sim 40''$ at spatial scales of $\sim$0.1$''$ ($\sim$0.0002~pc or $\sim$40~AU at 414~pc). The Keck/NIRC2 observations spatially resolve a plethora of irradiated sub-structures such as ridges, filaments, globules and proplyds. A remarkable spatial coincidence between the H$_2$ 1-0 S(1) vibrational and HCO$^+$ J=4-3 rotational emission previously obtained with ALMA is observed. This likely indicates the intimate link between these two molecular species and highlights that in high pressure PDR the H/H$_2$ and C$^+$/C/CO transitions zones come closer as compared to a typical layered structure of a constant density PDR. This is in agreement with several previous studies that claimed that the Orion Bar edge is composed of very small, dense, highly irradiated PDRs at high thermal pressure immersed in a more diffuse environment.
