We evaluated various heat treatments (HT) for maximizing the Nb 3 Sn layer thickness while retaining a refined grain microstructure in low filament count internal-Sn Nb 3 Sn Rod-In-Tube wires with internally oxidized nanoparticles. These wires were manufactured in our laboratory using SnO 2 as oxygen source and Nb alloys containing Ta and Zr or Hf. By reacting the wires at 650 °C for 200 hours we obtained relatively thin reaction layers but high layer critical current densities (layer J C ) of ∼3000 A/mm 2 for Hf-containing wires and ∼2700 A/mm 2 for Zr-containing wires, both at 4.2 K and 16 T. Notably, both of these values are over the layer J C threshold of 2500 A/mm 2 , which is estimated to be necessary for attaining the corresponding Future Circular Collider (FCC) target non-Cu J C of 1500 A/mm 2 . Following this heat treatment, the fine-grained Nb 3 Sn area occupies only ∼35% of the filament area for Hf-containing wires and ∼20% for Zr-containing wires. After heat treatments with a reaction step at 700 °C these values increase to 70–80% and ∼60%, respectively, with only a minor increase of the grain size. However, we observed a noticeable decrease in the layer J C for these HT. Magnetic measurements show that the high J C wires exhibit a point defect contribution from precipitates to the pinning force, which is missing in wires with depressed J C values. The higher heat treatment temperatures may have caused excessive coarsening of the oxide precipitates, to sizes unsuitable for flux pinning. Reaction heat treatment temperatures in the range of 650 °C to 700 °C and durations between 50 and 200 hours may provide a better compromise between the Nb 3 Sn layer thickness, its grain size and nanoparticle size.

The incidence and pathophysiology of these manifestations remain elusive. In this worldwide survey of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 who developed cardiac arrhythmias, we describe clinical characteristics associated with various arrhythmias, as well as global differences in modulations of routine electrophysiology practice during the pandemic. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 infection worldwide with and without incident cardiac arrhythmias. Patients with documented atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardia, nonsustained or sustained ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, atrioventricular block, or marked sinus bradycardia (heart rate<40 bpm) were classified as having arrhythmia. Deidentified data was provided by each institution and analyzed. Results: Data were collected for 4526 patients across 4 continents and 12 countries, 827 of whom had an arrhythmia. Cardiac comorbidities were common in patients with arrhythmia: 69% had hypertension, 42% diabetes, 30% had heart failure, and 24% had coronary artery disease. Most had no prior history of arrhythmia. Of those who did develop an arrhythmia, the majority (81.8%) developed atrial arrhythmias, 20.7% developed ventricular arrhythmias, and 22.6% had bradyarrhythmia. Regional differences suggested a lower incidence of atrial fibrillation in Asia compared with other continents (34% versus 63%). Most patients in North America and Europe received hydroxychloroquine, although the frequency of hydroxychloroquine therapy was constant across arrhythmia types. Big Data are growing at an exponential rate and it becomes necessary the use of tools and technologies to manage, process and visualize them in order to extract value. In this paper a micro-service based platform is presented for the composition, deployment and execution of Big Data Analytics (BDA) application workflows in several domains and scenarios is presented. ALIDA is a result coming from previous research activities by ENGINEERING. It aims to achieve a unified platform that allows both BDA application developers and data analysts to interact with it. Developers will be able to register new BDA applications through the exposed API and/or through the web user interface. Data analysts will be able to use the BDA applications provided to create batch/stream workflows through a dashboard user interface to manipulate and subsequently visualize results from one or more sources. The platform also supports the auto-tuning of Big Data frameworks deployment properties to improve metrics for analytics application. ALIDA has been properly extended and integrated into a software solution for the analysis of large amounts of data from the avionic industries. Second-generation high temperature superconductor (2G HTS) wires demonstrate remarkable engineering current density (averaged over the full wire), JE, at very high magnetic fields, driving progress in fusion and other applications. The key challenge for HTS wires has been to offer an acceptable combination of high and consistent superconducting performance in high magnetic fields, high volume supply, and low price. Here we report a very high and reproducible JE in practical HTS wires based on a simple YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) superconductor formulation with Y2O3 nanoparticles, which have been delivered in just nine months to a commercial fusion customer in the largest-volume order the HTS industry has seen to date. We demonstrate a novel YBCO superconductor formulation without the c-axis correlated nano-columnar defects that are widely believed to be prerequisite for high in-field performance. The simplicity of this new formulation allows robust and scalable manufacturing, providing, for the first time, large volumes of consistently high performance wire, and the economies of scale necessary to lower HTS wire prices to a level acceptable for fusion and ultimately for the widespread commercial adoption of HTS.

This dissertation explores how late Roman and Byzantine Christians conceptualized the role of their empire in the consummation of history and the events of the end times, and suggests that their views on this subject have larger ramifications for the study of Byzantine political thought. It examines how the citizens and subjects of history’s first Christian empire reconciled the distinctly anti-imperial apocalyptic literature of the Bible with the needs of imperial ideology. It pursues this question by studying how Latin, Greek, and Syriac writers in late antiquity and the early medieval period interpreted the apocalyptic prophecies in the Old Testament Book of Daniel, which were hostile to the imperial order of the time.The Danielic prophecies divided history into four successive kingdoms, of which the fourth and last was the most wicked, ruled by an evil and persecuting king. It prophesied that in the near future this evil kingdom would be destroyed and replaced by an eternal and holy fifth kingdom. Scholars have long recognized that ancient Jews and early Christians denounced the Roman Empire as the persecutory fourth kingdom of Daniel. Nonetheless, most modern scholarship claims that after the conversion of Constantine, Roman Christians sought to reconcile Christian empire with scripture, either by stripping the fourth kingdom of its negative associations and celebrating it as the polity which would help usher in the God’s eternal kingdom, or by identifying the empire with that eternal kingdom, Daniel’s fifth kingdom. These mistaken conclusions stem from a conflation of Byzantine and Syriac eschatological literature. Some Syriac sources, produced in the imperial borderlands or within the Persian and, later, Arab empires, did glorify the Roman Empire from afar as a virtuous fourth kingdom; however, this literature exercised a major influence within the empire only from the eighth century onwards. Background and aim: The objective of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the degree of glycaemic control and the frequency of diabetic complications in Italian people with diabetes who were treated with continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII). Methods and results: Questionnaires investigating the organisation of diabetes care centres, individuals’ clinical and metabolic features and pump technology and its management were sent to adult and paediatric diabetes centres that use CSII for treatment in Italy. Information on standard clinical variables, demographic data and acute and chronic diabetic complications was derived from local clinical management systems. The sample consisted of 6623 people with diabetes, which was obtained from 93 centres. Of them, 98.8% had type 1 diabetes mellitus, 57.2% were female, 64% used a conventional insulin pump and 36% used a sensor-augmented insulin pump. The median glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) level was 60 mmol/mol (7.6%). The HbA1c target (i.e. <58 mmol/mol for age <18 years and [removed]18 years) was achieved in 43.4% of paediatric and 23% of adult participants. Factors such as advanced pump functions, higher rate of sensor use, pregnancy in the year before the study and longer duration of diabetes were associated with lower HbA1c levels. The most common chronic complications occurring in diabetes were retinopathy, microalbuminuria and hypertension. In the year before the study, 5% of participants reported ≥1 episode of severe hypoglycaemic (SH) episodes (SH) and 2.6% reported ≥1 episode of ketoacidosis. Conclusions: Advanced personal skills and use of sensor-based pump are associated with better metabolic control outcomes in Italian people with diabetes who were treated with CSII. The reduction in SH episodes confirms the positive effect of CSII on hypoglycaemia. Clinical trial registration number: NCT 02620917 (ClinicalTrials.gov).

These deposits have a great impact on the overall process performance, and they have been formed in accelerated deactivation conditions (450 degrees C, 65 bar, space time of 0.09 g(cat) h g(bio-oil)(-1)) using a continuous fixed bed reactor and a FeMoP/HZSM-5 catalyst. Coke deposition causes partial deactivation of the catalyst, which reaches a pseudosteady state of constant activity and also contant yields of interesting chemicals. The evolution of the coke in the transient state has been studied through temperature-programmed oxidation, Raman spectroscopy and elemental analysis. We have identified three different types of coke, whose composition evolves with time on stream towards condensed and stable structures. The assessment of the evolution of the reaction medium composition and the application of the principal component analysis (PCA) methodology have evidenced that the dynamics of coke have three stages: (1) it is controlled by the thermally-induced deposition of thermal lignin; (2) followed by the interconversion into intermediate coke through aging reactions; and (3) it ends up in a pseudosteady state dominated by the formation of catalytic coke species originating from both deoxygenated and carbonized intermediate coke as well as the condensation of aromatics in the reaction medium.

This volume is the editorial product of the project “Gentrification and Crime. New Configurations and Challenges for the City” started by a public conference held on May 6, 2019 at the Municipal Historical Archive of Palermo. This event was organized by Locus and endorsed by private and public bodies. During the conference, four presentations were given by distinguished academics of main fields investigated: Giovanni Semi, Marco Picone, Adam Asmundo, Antonio La Spina. Journalist Elvira Terranova moderated the event. This publication was born from the desire to investigate gentrification and crime through a multidisciplinary approach. It draws inspiration from the urban sociologist Henri Lefebvre and his fundamental work The Production of Space on how the subject in its corporeality and in its interactions with the other integrates and produces spaces. The people involved in the project stem from different fields: geographers, urban sociologists and criminologists, architects and urban planners, historians, and other representatives of civil society. That being said, given this project’s cross-disciplinary nature, contributors are given some creative freedom to flesh-out their own conceptualizations. As such, it is appropriate to cultivate an understanding of the intellectual framework and foundation underpinning this work., History & Complexity

The determination of the shear strength parameters by means of in-situ shove test is a key issue in the material characterization of unreinforced brick masonry buildings. The wall stress distribution following the removal of the bricks and the mortar joint dilatancy affect the determination of the friction angle and the initial shear strength respectively. A new approach for the definition of the compression in the test unit and the evaluation of the effect of the joint dilatancy on the initial shear strength has been developed. The compression in the test unit is evaluated based on simple formulas which relate the compression stress on the test unit to both the geometry of the specimen and the existing compression on the wall. The joint dilatancy produces an increment of both shear and normal stress at the initial phase of the shove test when the specimen is at low level of compression and at small relative horizontal displacements. In particular, it was observed that the increment of normal stress is due to restrain the tendency of the joint to expand vertically while the brick is pushed. The new approach was validated by means of an experimental benchmark campaign developed at University of Pavia and Delft University of Technology in which specimens made by replicated brick masonry were subjected to triplet tests.

The compression in the test unit is evaluated based on simple formulas which relate the compression stress on the test unit to both the geometry of the specimen and the existing compression on the wall. The joint dilatancy produces an increment of both shear and normal stress at the initial phase of the shove test when the specimen is at low level of compression and at small relative horizontal displacements. In particular, it was observed that the increment of normal stress is due to restrain the tendency of the joint to expand vertically while the brick is pushed. The new approach was validated by means of an experimental benchmark campaign developed at University of Pavia and Delft University of Technology in which specimens made by replicated brick masonry were subjected to triplet tests.

Plastic scintillator-based neutron time-of-flight (nTOF) detectors are used to measure neutron signals from fusion experiments. These nTOF signals yield a temporal pulse width that is used to determine ion temperatures after the de-convolution of the experimentally determined detector time response and shifted to account for the detector through-put delay. Typically, time response and through-put delays are measured at an accelerator or laser facility. However, an alternative method can use cosmic radiation to measure time response and through-put delay. Two plastic scintillator detectors in a coincidence system can detect an incident cosmic ray. If a third nTOF detector is placed between these coincident detectors, the output cosmic ray signal in the nTOF detector can be analyzed to produce the time response and through-put delay. Measurements taken using cosmic radiation were mostly within one standard deviation of data taken on the same detectors at an electron accelerator.

The Par j 2 allergen was expressed in a large amount in Escherichia coli and purified to homogeneity. Its immunological properties were studied by western blotting and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay inhibition. Solid lipid nanoparticles were obtained by water-in-oil-in-water multiple emulsion method and characterized in terms of mean size and surface charge. These systems (approximately 250 nm diameter and negative surface charge) incorporated recombinant Par j 2 with 40% or greater efficiency. Moreover, the endotoxin level and anaphylactic activity of the empty solid lipid nanoparticles and recombinant Par j 2-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles were evaluated by looking at the overexpression of CD203c marker on human basophils. High rates of pediculosis are found in every part of the world. The age-range most affected is between 3 and 12 years. No-nit policies are ineffective in preventing infestations. On the other hand, misdiagnosis and overuse of pediculicides, increase resistance to treatment. Lack of information leads people to consider this kind of infestation to be associated to low social classes and immigrants. This research has been implemented to find out about the information level on pediculosis on a sample of students (722) and teachers (408) of some primary schools in northern and southern Italy, and to highlight the role of personal aspects such as age, gender, cultural level, geographical position which may influence this topic and, eventually, allow the use of the correct knowledge in developing appropriate procedures within the school district. Data was obtained through a questionnaire containing 21 multiple choice questions for the teachers and 14 for the students. Standard descriptive statistics were computed. ?2 tests were applied to highlight statistical association among observed variables; test for the difference of two proportions were applied to confirm significant differences among the observed proportions. The level of information for students seems to be, approximately, the same both for northern and southern Italy. There was a slight prevalence of correct answers from southern teachers, probably because the phenomenon of pediculosis has a positive trend of growth in the south. The number of correct answers was, for all, on average about 60.0%; a negative result in itself, considering the simplicity of the questions. Knowledge about the biology of the louse was virtually absent. The area of prevention showed lack of information and need for improvement. Thermal conductivity for a helium-oxygen mixture is 2.5 times greater than the conductivity of a nitrogen-oxygen mixture at 7 psia. A direct result of this difference is that the convective heat loss from man is higher in a helium atmosphere. Therefore, thermal comfort zones in helium should show an elevated comfort range. Measurements of human comfort zones at pressures of 5, 7 and 10 psia using a random walk technique were made in the Space Cabin Simulator. Air velocities, clothing, and atmosphere diluents were systematically varied. The data show that the mid-point of the comfort range for the clothed subject is highest for He-O2 at 7 psia and lowest for N2 - O2 at both 5 and 7 psia; He-O2 at 5 psia mid way between these extremes.
