In contrast to cranial gunshot trauma, diagnosis and interpretation of gunshot trauma to long bones remains difficult and controversial. The aim of this study is to review the published literature on fracture patterns resulting from gunshot trauma in human long bones, and to use the described characteristics to provide practical guidance for the forensic anthropologist. In order to achieve this, medical and forensic publications on this topic were reviewed. Several types of fractures, such as linear, oblique, comminuted and butterfly fractures, have been observed in either the shaft or the ends of long bones. Indirect fractures that are not caused by bullets striking bone directly but by bullet-induced forces to the surrounding soft tissue have been found as well. Some of these fractures are related to a specific context or mechanism which might help in the forensic reconstruction of events. It is recommended that future research should focus on available medical data to provide more detailed descriptions on fracture patterns for forensic purposes. Experimentation with bone surrogates and computer modelling might also provide better and more realistic reconstructions of gunshot trauma in the future and provide valuable insights for its diagnosis and interpretation in forensic anthropology. Background: Approximately, 80% of civilian cranial gunshot injuries in India are mainly due to unlicensed mostly country-made guns, called the "Desi-Kattas," manufactured by the traditional gunsmiths. These injuries constitute a unique subgroup, with respect to the make and design along with the unique wound ballistics compared to the factory-made firearms.Objective: This study is aimed at defining the prognostic factors in predicting the outcomes related to cranial gunshot injuries due to these desi-kattas.Methods: Ten patients with kata-related cranial gunshot injury underwent surgical intervention at our institution, between 2014 and 2018. Their clinical status, imaging features, and outcomes were retrospectively analyzed.Results: Ten patients with kata-related gunshot injuries to the head were identified. Homicidal injuries were documented in six cases. Five had a GCS of 13-15 at presentation. Exit wounds were noted in 50% of the suicidal cases. Multilobar involvement was seen in 70% of cases, with the bullet crossing the midline in only 40% cases. Decompressive craniectomy was required in five cases. Eight patients had a Glasgow Outcome Score of four or more at 6 months of follow-up. There was one death during the follow-up period, while the other patient remains to be in vegetative state.Conclusion: The Katta-related cranial injuries constitute low-muzzle velocity injuries with the majority of the patients sustaining nonfatal injuries, especially homicidal. The presence of positive CT findings and the crossing of the bullet across the midline on CT brain predicts dismal prognosis. As the epidemic of gunshot injuries and firearm fatalities continues to proliferate in the United States, knowledge regarding gunshot wound (GSW) injury and management is increasingly relevant to health-care providers. Unfortunately, existing guidelines are largely outdated, written in a time that high-velocity weapons and deforming bullets were chiefly restricted to military use. Advances in firearm technology and increased accessibility of military grade firearms to civilians has exacerbated the nature of domestic GSW injury and complicated clinical decision-making, as these weapons are associated with increased tissue damage and often result in retained bullets. Currently, there is a lack of literature addressing recent advances in the field of projectile-related trauma, specifically injuries with retained bullets. This paper presents the results of the estimation of the priming mixture force for primers used in 12.7 mm ammunition. The method of estimation is based on the results of pressure measurements in a closed chamber into which the products of the combustion of the priming mixture flowed. The capacity of the chamber was changed by inserting sleeves of various volumes. Another estimation of the force value was performed using the results of earlier investigations in which the chamber was filled with glass balls. The determined values of the force were compared with the values estimated based on the accessible literature data. The obtained estimations of the force value are of the same order of magnitude as the force value of black powder. This justifies the use of black powder characteristics for the assessment of the thermodynamic properties of priming mixture combustion products in interior ballistics calculations. The time of action of the investigated primer was determined using the optical recording of the outflow of the priming mixture combustion products into an open space. This paper presents the experimental estimation of the ignition pressure value produced by a primer in small arms ammunition. Investigations were performed using a chamber of the capacity equal to the capacity of the 12.7 mm ammunition case. The inner volume of the chamber was adjusted to the free volume in the cartridge by inserting a sleeve or glass balls of a diameter of 2 or 4 mm. The pressure values were measured inside the chamber after the action of the primer. The maximum pressure value was used as an estimation of the ignition pressure value. Depending on the nature of the filling, considerably different values were obtained; they were compared with the values of pressure measured inside the case at the live firing. A considerable difference between the ignition pressure values measured inside the case and those measured in the model setup was detected. In modern war, the special ammunition launched by mortars contains photoelectric components, which can't bear high overload, so low overload launching is required. This paper creatively conceives the integrated structure of projectile and inverted high-pressure chamber without changing the mortar tube's original structure design. The flow field in the bore is modeled and simulated by using classical interior ballistics and FLUENT, and the difference between the chamber pressure of the inverted high-pressure chamber structure and the traditional structure are analyzed. The simulation results show that the initial motion law of the projectile launched by the inverted high-pressure chamber structure is different from that launched by the original structure. Chamber pressure has two peaks, the peak value decreases by 25 %, the velocity increases by 5 %, and the displacement increases by 60 %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The application of series dual burning rate grain can improve specific impulse of nozzleless solid rocket motor (NSRM). In this paper, burning-rate ratio is the ratio of main propellant burning rate and nozzle propellant burning rate in dual burning rate grain, which has significant influence on NSRM performance. Focusing on relationship between burning-rate ratio and motor performance, internal ballistics simulation of NSRM with different burning-rate ratios has been carried out. Results show that, with the increase of burning-rate ratio, total impulse grows monotonically, while maximum head pressure has two variation stages – the stable stage and the increasing stage. By analyzing the head pressure curves, it is known that maximum head pressure is almost equal to the higher one of initial stage head pressure (p1) and combustion ending stage head pressure (p2). Relationship between p2/p1 and burning-rate ratio has been established by linear fitting, and the critical burning-rate ratio, which is the maximum burning-rate ratio to ensure that maximum head pressure almost is kept invariant, has been obtained. Critical burning-rate ratio has no significant change when geometry size remains invariant. Utilizing critical burning-rate ratio in NSRM with series dual burning rate grain, specific impulse can be enhanced with nearly no sacrifice of maximum head pressure performance. The use of ordnance gelatine has been widespread in the field of ballistics as a simulant for soft tissue when assessing ballistic threats. However, the traditional method of preparing ordnance gelatine is time-consuming and requires precision to ensure that the final mold meets the required specifications. Furthermore, temperature control is necessary post-production, and there are limitations on its usage duration. To address these issues, manufacturers have developed pre-mixed, gelatine-like products that are stable at room temperature and require less preparation time. Nonetheless, it is uncertain whether these new products can perform in the same manner as the gold standard of ordnance gelatine. This study used five types of blocks, including ordnance gelatine (10% and 20%), Clear Ballistics (10% and 20%) and Perma-Gel (10%) and subjected them to 9 mm, 0.380 Auto fired from a universal receiver and a 5.56 × 45 mm ammunition fired by a certified firearms instructor. Delta-V and total energy dissipation were measured after each test using data collected from ballistic chronographs placed in front of and behind each block. High-speed video was recorded, and a cut-down analysis conducted. The findings revealed variations in energy dissipation and fissure formation within the block, with greater energy based on fissure formation observed in the ordnance gelatine. The last five decades have seen strong developments in irrigation modeling. In solid-set sprinkler irrigation, models have generally been applied to a few sprinklers in a regular arrangement, making them representative of a sector or a field. In this research, the Ador-Solid-Set model for whole-field solid-set sprinkler irrigation is presented, validated and applied to simulate an irrigation event in two fields: CA (10.2 ha) and ZA (24.5 ha), equipped with 12 and 26 sectors, respectively. The model couples pipeline hydraulics (EPANET), sprinkler ballistics and irrigation scheduling at execution time. Field experiments were used to validate the ballistic model in a solid-set combining full- and partial-circle sprinklers. Observed and simulated irrigation depths and coefficients of uniformity showed determination coefficients of 0.73*** and 0.89***, respectively. Optimization was used to estimate pipeline roughness based on pairs of pressure measurements (at the inlet and specific sprinklers): 26 pairs in CA and 58 pairs in ZA. Roughness parameters were estimated for the main pipeline, each sector and the sprinkler risers: 14 parameters in CA and 28 in ZA. More than a million hydraulic simulations were required to estimate roughness in each field. Maps were produced for applied water in CA and ZA following a sequential irrigation of their sectors lasting for 24 hours. The model produced whole-field coefficients of uniformity of 80.2 in CA and 80.9 in ZA. Finally, Ador-Solid-Set quantified the volume of drift outside the field (2.4 and 1.5% of the applied water in CA and ZA, respectively). This additional drift can be added to the wind drift and evaporation losses obtained from empirical equations, in a process that requires further analysis. Polyurea (PU) elastomers have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their exceptional blast mitigation, ballistic protection, and wear resistance properties. However, their applications as protective materials are often limited as a result of their high flammability. In this study, aromatic dianhydrides (ArDAs) were employed to capture the thermal decomposing products of PU during combustion and facilitate the generation of highly heat-resistant aromatic polyimides (i.e., end group capturing effect), thus enhancing the material's char-forming ability and improving its flame retardancy. The ArDAs were found to significantly reduce the peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR), total smoke release (TSR), and total CO release (TCO) of PU, and meanwhile increased the amount of char residue. At 20 wt% content of 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), PHRR, THR, TSR and TCO of PU were reduced by 70.6%, 32.5%, 44.7% and 58.8%, respectively, the char residue was increased by 405%, and the mechanical properties of PU were well maintained (88.5% tensile strength and 91.0% elongation at break of pure PU). These findings demonstrate that ArDAs could serve as a new kind of halogen/phosphorus-free flame retardant for PU elastomers. Treating Kevlar fabric with silica nanoparticles is known to augment its mechanical properties, especially under shear deformation. Silica nanoparticle-treated Kevlar (SNK) fabric could therefore display improved ballistic performance. In this study, the ballistic performance of SNK with various percentages by weight of nanoparticle addition and number of layers is evaluated using compressed air gun experiments. A colloid-based treatment procedure is used to impregnate dry silica nanoparticles into the fabric. Addition of nanoparticles provided about 17.3% mass advantage (due to three fewer layers) for the 40 wt.% SNK vis-à-vis neat Kevlar for the non-penetrative case. SEM imaging reveals that at higher treatment levels the nanoparticles tend to agglomerate in the interstitial spaces of yarn crossover points, which helps better engage secondary yarns away from the impact location of the projectile. A semi-empirical model is developed to capture the influence of treatment level and number of layers on the kinetic energy absorbed by SNK. The flexibility of SNK is tested using a fixed cantilever test that avoids the sliding of the sample between flat plates used in standardized tests, which tends to dislodge the nanoparticles. The measured tip deflection angle decreases from 33o for the neat fabric to 19o for the 40 wt.% SNK. The flexural rigidities educed using digital image analysis range from 48.9 μNm2 for the neat fabric to 113.7 μNm2 for the 40 wt.% case. SNK could potentially enable multifunctional structural solutions in applications related to personal protective gear, military vehicle hulls and impact shielding of space structures. Firearm injuries are a preventable epidemic in the USA. Extremities are commonly affected in gunshot injuries. Such injuries may be complex with concomitant osseous, soft tissue, and neurovascular components. The maximum wounding potential of a projectile is determined by its kinetic energy and the proportion of the kinetic energy that is transmitted to the target. Accurate assessment of ballistic injuries is dependent on utilizing the principles of wound ballistics, accurate bullet count, and ballistic trajectory analysis. The goals of this article are to review wound ballistics and the imaging evaluation of extremity civilian firearm injuries in the adult population, with emphasis on ballistic trajectory analysis, specific ballistic fracture patterns, and diffuse, secondary soft tissue ballistic injuries. The evolution of material strength within several dense particle suspensions impacted by a projectile is investigated and shown to be strongly dependent on the particle material in suspension. For stronger particles, such as silicon carbide, the shear strength of the fluid is shown to increase with the ballistic impact strength. For weaker particles, such as silica, the shear strength of the suspension is found to be independent of impact strength in this dynamic range of tests. A soft-capture technique is employed to collect ejecta samples of a silica-based shear thickening fluid, following a ballistic impact and penetration event. Ejecta samples that were collected from impacts at three different velocities are observed and compared to the benchmark particles using a Scanning Electron Microscope. The images show evidence of fractured and deformed silica particles recovered among the nominally 1 µm diameter monodisperse spheres. There is also evidence of particle fragments that appear to be the result of interparticle grinding. The trends observed in the shear strength estimates are interpreted with regards to the particle damage seen in the ejecta recovery experiments to develop a concept of the impact response of these fluids. The results suggest that particle slip through deformation is likely the dominant factor in limiting the transient impact strength of these fluids. Vocational knowledge originates from both research and from practice, each of which is transformed across several epistemic levels to become vocational knowledge. The several transformations of research to vocational knowledge have been described by Young and Bernstein as recontextualisations. Less well described are the successive transformations of practice to become vocational knowledge. This paper observes that practical knowledge has to be transformed across several epistemic levels to become vocational knowledge. It examines different types of literature on European artillery in the early modern period: scholarly books on ballistics which were printed in Latin, gunners' manuals which were manuscripts in the vernacular, and artillery books for non specialist readers which were printed in the vernacular. It finds that practical knowledge didn't have to be transformed just to apply it to a new context. Knowledge is transformed to a different epistemic level when it is expressed for use by a different type of actor for a qualitatively different purpose from the initial use. The paper concludes by arguing that vocational colleges and institutes have a potentially valuable role in developing vocational knowledge from practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rifles are often involved in violent deaths such as homicide and suicide. Consequently, expert knowledge and experimental forensic investigations are important to clarify the nature of ballistic trauma when applied to the human head and neurocranium. This study investigated differences in entrance wound morphology with Synbone® spheres which are described as being comparable to human flat bones. A series of ballistic experiments were conducted using two different rifle calibers (5.56 × 45 mm and 7.62 × 39 mm Full Metal Jacket (FMJ)). Synbone® spheres were used for close-range 0.3 m simulated executions as well as at 25 m and 35 m to simulate urban and military engagements. Results were compared with previously published experimental studies using similar military ammunition. In our study, entry wound morphology closely resembles real forensic cases compared to exit wound and overall shape morphology independently of the distance and the caliber. Circumferential delamination was clearly visible with full metal jacket (FMJ) rounds, yielding similar damage pattern morphology to the human crania. This study documented the presence of hydraulic burst or shock in all ten rounds from all three distances. Krönlein shots were also observed in some cases. Synbone® spheres constitute an acceptable synthetic surrogate for ballistic experiments. The present study offers new initial data on the behavior of Synbone® proxies in ballistic testing of military ammunitions; FMJ gunshot injuries to the human head, for distances that have not previously been published, suggesting that efficient tests can take place under these conditions. Further research on experimental ballistics with a larger number of controlled factors and multiple repetitions is recommended to verify the results of this pilot study before applied in forensic simulations. Soot is deposited from 20–30 cm from the muzzle of most handguns and arranged concentrically around the entry wound. We examined a case of a self‐inflicted gunshot wound from a 9‐mm pistol that left an unusual pattern of soot deposition consisting of two circular 3‐mm deposits of soot located 2 cm from the entry wound. Examination of the weapon and test‐firing it against a cloth reproduced the soot deposits, which were caused by two ports on the top of the barrel. Examination of the weapon and comparing the barrel with the entry wound and surrounding skin may provide important information about the type of weapon, the muzzle‐to‐target distance, and atypical soot deposits. Background: Radial arterial line placement is commonly performed in various clinical settings, including the emergency department. However, learners are successful on the first attempt only half of the time. Simulation can provide learners with procedure practice opportunities outside of clinical practice to increase confidence and chances of success.Objectives: We set out to build an arterial line trainer that would be inexpensive and reusable, wearable, anatomically realistic, and echogenic to allow for ultrasound use. We also hoped to devise a clear option that would allow for demonstration of procedure pitfalls.Discussion: The arterial line trainer requires 4 hours of assembly time and costs $160. This includes enough material to make 48 tissue pads. The ballistics gel pad is echogenic; it can be customized with clear gel for direct anatomic visualization or dyed gel for more realism. The trainer also has a pulsatile artery for practice using anatomic landmarks. Visualization of the following important arterial line placement pitfalls is possible: suboptimal angle of approach, inadequate advancement of the catheter, and through-and-through vessel puncture.Conclusions: Our inexpensive trainer can help physicians and physicians in training conceptualize, practice, and troubleshoot the pitfalls of arterial line placement. The individual and synergistic effects of multi‐walled carbon nano tubes (MWCNT) and graphene nano‐platelets (GNP) on the ballistic performance (low and high velocity) of functionalized Kevlar reinforced polymer matrix composites have been investigated. Low‐velocity impact tests were carried out on the composite targets (6 layers) using a gas gun setup. Surface hardened conical nose projectiles of 10 mm diameter were used and the inlet velocity was in the range of 122–128 m/s. Similarly, high‐velocity ballistic impact experiments were conducted on the targets (24 layers) using a 9 mm full metal jacketed (FMJ) projectile with an initial velocity of 430 ± 15 m/s. Acid treatment was done to functionalize the Kevlar fiber surface. From the low‐velocity impact experiments, the hybrid targets had better ballistic resistance when compared to the unfilled and individually filled nanocomposites. A reduced projectile exit velocity, improved impact energy absorption (32.5 J), and an improved energy absorption percentage of 27.57 were observed for the hybrid combination. Similar improvements were observed during high‐velocity ballistic experiments which were evident from the fractographic analysis. The macroscopic investigation on the target containing both the nano‐fillers had the least penetration depth of 5.8 mm and a high damage area compared to the other targets. This is due to the addition of f‐MWCNT and f‐GNP which has increased the matrix toughening and functionalization of Kevlar which increased the interfacial bonding. In addition, the crack bridging property of CNTs and encapsulation behavior of graphene due to stacking has synergistically improved the overall toughness of the composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Noble–Abel (NA) equation of state (EOS) is widely used in the interior ballistics of guns as well as rocket propulsion computations. Its simplicity and accuracy are key points for intensive computations with hyperbolic two-phase flow models considered in interior ballistics codes. An alternative formulation is examined in the present contribution through a first-order virial (VO1) equation of state. Appropriate methods for the determination of related parameters, such as specific gas constant, co-volume, and condensed material energy, for both formulations (NA and VO1) are presented. For this, a combination of closed bomb vessel experiments and thermochemical code computations is needed. An extended VO1 EOS with temperature-dependent specific heat is examined. Then, its extension to multiple reactive materials is addressed. Examples are examined for each formulation (NA and VO1) and comparisons are done with the Becker–Kistiakowsky–Wilson (BKW) EOS as reference. Several conclusions have emerged. First, a consideration of the specific heat temperature dependance in computations of the interior ballistics of guns appeared insignificant. Second, VO1 appeared to be more accurate than NA, particularly when gas density is beyond the range used for EOS parameter determination. Last, regarding mixtures of condensed reactive materials, producing burnt gas mixtures, NA again appeared to be less accurate than VO1. However, its formulation is explicit, while VO1 requires numerical solving of a non-linear equation, with consequences on computational cost. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We numerically investigate the spreading dynamics of wave packets in a one-dimensional lattice with quasiperiodic disorders and nonlinear interactions. Under moderate disorder strength, we reveal an intriguing super-ballistic diffusion driven by increasing the interaction strength from the ballistic diffusion in the non- and weakly interacting cases. We obtain a wide parameter region for such a faster-than-ballistic spreading of wave packets in the quasiperiodic lattice, although the nonlinear self-trapping is dominated under strong interactions. The super-ballistic diffusion is further analyzed based on the point source model. We also show the interaction-induced sub-diffusive spreading in the Anderson localized regime. The super-ballistic and sub-diffusive dynamics are exhibited in the spreading that starts from both the single-site and Gaussian wave packets. Our results showcase the interaction-enabled super-ballistic diffusion, which is scarce and experimentally realizable in artificial atomic or photonic lattices. • The super-ballistic diffusion induced by nonlinear interactions in a one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattice is revealed, which indicates the faster-than-ballistic spreading of wave packets. • A point source model is implemented to analyze the dynamic exponent and the physical picture of the super-ballistic diffusion. • The super-ballistic diffusion can be exhibited for single-site and Gaussian wave packets, which could be experimentally observed in artificial atomic or photonic lattices. Cross-laminated timber (CLT), an engineered wood product, has grown in popularity in the United States over the last decade due to its ease of assembly, aesthetic appeal, and potential to serve as a sustainable and renewable alternative building material. The improved robustness of CLT over light-frame timber structures has increased its potential in force-protected infrastructure that must resist blast waves and ballistic projectile penetration, but softwood CLT is typically not sufficient to fulfill standard criteria for ballistic threats. To address these threats, enhanced CLT (ECLT) composite panels were manufactured with layers of various reinforcing materials (e.g., steel, FRP) placed between wood laminations. These panels were tested against various ballistic threats during two sets of laboratory tests in order to provide a basis for future research. The first set of testing subjected laboratory-produced Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) ECLT to 84 shots of 0.50-inch (1.27 cm) steel sphere projectiles to evaluate the performance of various reinforcing materials, layups, and fastening methods. A subsequent set of tests subjected commercially produced ECLT of steel-reinforced Spruce-Pine-Fir (South) (SPF-S) to 36 shots of NATO ammunition projectiles traveling at realistic, standard striking velocities. Except for a panel using four layers of a thin and finely woven steel hardware cloth, steel reinforcement was effective in stopping projectiles from all three types of NATO ammunition fired. Ultimately considering the results of these two sets of tests, an initial cost-benefit structure was developed and discussed to compare ECLT configurations holistically, a multi-material wood analytical model framework was established and compared to experimental results, and the first ballistic experimental database for ECLT was created. This research continues the research of Deng et al. (2022) [1], using Discrete Element Method (DEM) coupled with Finite Element Analysis to solve shotgun exterior ballistics. The simulation examples in this research are using an Italian-made 24 gm #9½ birdshot with 433 pellets fired from 30" long, 12-gauge cylinder and full choke barrels. The simulations of shotgun exterior ballistics of this research included pellet swarm velocity and the pellet dispersion at different distances until 50 yards away from the muzzle. The ballistics simulation of the pellet swarm is completed from interior to exterior consecutively after the shotshell is fired inside the chamber so all ballistics performances can be calculated at one time. Three forces were applied to the pellets for exterior ballistics simulation: the contact force between pellets, the aerodynamic separation force between pellets, and the drag force. Because of the complexity of the aerodynamic forces exerted on pellets, this research used an equivalent aerodynamic force to simulate this complex phenomenon. Two birdshot models with different pellet formations were created; the first one was simulated to calibrate the separation scale factor defined in aerodynamic separation force, and the second one was used for validation and sensitivity of the model. The simulation results show that for #9½ birdshots fired by cylinder barrel, the average Effective Shot Dispersion (ESD) of pellet dispersion of both birdshots inside the 30" diameter of the target circle at 40 yards from the muzzle is 398.53, which is remarkably close to 396.98 of the experiment result. The simulation of the average pellets' target hit rate is 77.14% (inside the 30" diameter of the target circle), which is also remarkably close to the experiment hit rate of 77.57%. The same birdshot fired from a full choke barrel shows that ESD and hit rate rose to 406.34 and 83.14%, respectively. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of using the discrete element method in conjunction with the proposed equivalent aerodynamic force to predict the shotgun's interior and exterior ballistics. Contact shots to the head often leave behind biological traces inside firearm barrels, a phenomenon of great forensic interest. Until now, the visualization and preservation of these traces presented a significant challenge, lacking a reliable method. This study addresses this gap by searching for a suitable method to extract the traces within a casting. Using alginate or gelatine as suitable materials, the results were hampered by serious adhesion issues and their extraction out of the firearm barrel was impeded. Finally, the combination of 11% gelatine with 1% alginate, introduced into the barrel around a ‘central spine’, succeeded to consistently produce replicable castings. Experimental contact shots displayed a distinct staining gradient from the muzzle to the rear of the barrel, as revealed through endoscopy and proved in the macroscopic casting. The technique proved effective for various common handgun barrels and successfully preserved blood and gunshot residue (GSR) patterns within the barrel. The first goal of this work is to find a regression law for PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) coupled to hydrogen peroxide on a 10-N-scale hybrid thruster, which appears to be suitable for small satellites when, for example, manoeuvres are required for orbital control purposes. Different techniques were initially analysed in order to reconstruct the ballistics inside the combustion chamber, starting from the experimental data. Subsequently, even if the different techniques lead to similar results, the one that takes into consideration the greatest number of the experimental measurements was chosen for the post-processing, and three different regression curves were obtained according to various criteria. The resulting regression laws coming from the selected method appear to be in agreement with the experimental results and constitute a powerful means for designing engines with this fuel. Finally, a performance analysis has been performed and in-space thrust and specific impulse have been estimated. The ongoing pursuit of space and hypersonic flight continues to expose critical gaps in the understanding of material behavior under hypervelocity impact (HVI) and hypersonic flow conditions. Such limitations pose serious risks for aerospace vehicles, spacecraft, hardened structures, defensive systems, etc. Consequently, the development of materials and systems that can endure HVIs and hypersonic flight is a major obstacle in the quest for sustainable space exploration, reusable air-breathing hypersonic vehicles, and enduring protective structures. HVIs (≥ 3.0 km/s) can induce severe material deformation, erosion, fracturing, fragmentation, melting, vaporization, and sublimation. At the same time, hypersonic (≥ Mach 5) vehicles may be subjected to intense thermal and mechanical loads. Addressing these grand challenges requires a multifaceted and interdisciplinary approach, combining well-designed experiments with physics-based analytical and numerical modeling. Studying material behavior under HVIs and hypersonic conditions has been facilitated by two-stage light gas gun (2SLGG) aeroballistic ranges for almost seven decades. This current study surveys over 90 2SLGG aeroballistic ranges operational since 1990 to assess global launch and experimental capabilities. The 2SLGG's origins and research applications are explored, highlighting its significance in various fields, including shock physics, planetary science/defense, military defense, nuclear physics, hypersonic vehicle survivability and performance, and spacecraft micro-meteoroid/orbital debris protection. A summary of relevant HVI phenomena is presented to underscore the importance of 2SLGGs and to elucidate similarities and differences among various 2SLGG aeroballistic ranges and their supporting methods/tools. The 2SLGG's working principles are explained, and configurations and operations are compared. Modifications resulting in "three-stage light gas guns" are briefly mentioned for completeness. The full range of current 2SLGG performance capabilities is assessed with impact kinetic energies ranging from ∼ 10 joules to nearly 100 megajoules, and the facility survey results are used to explain the variations in aeroballistic range tankage, experiment types, research applications, and diagnostic systems. Boron carbide, with a nominal stoichiometry of B 4 C, is a highly desired ceramic candidate for armor applications due to its high hardness derived from the complex crystal structure. However, stress-induced local amorphization can lead to failure and is a known challenge for this material which must be addressed for applications in ballistic environments. Understanding boron carbide's atomic structural behavior and bonding environment is critical in determining effective strategies to mitigate these issues. In this work, the thermo-structural behavior of B 4 C has been studied in detail using a conical nozzle levitator system coupled with in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Lattice expansion and the resulting thermal expansion coefficients (CTEs) were determined from 25-2100 °C. Rietveld refinements showed anisotropic atomic displacement for each of the 4 unique sites as a function of temperature. An exceptionally large z-axis displacement for the boron chain center is linked to bond weakness and may be linked to fa α 11 ster expansion of the α 33 relative to CTEs. Thermally induced lattice changes can inform the use of boron carbide at elevated temperatures as well as help develop strategies for mitigating structural failure for armor applications. Forensic reconstructions and ballistic testing requires the use of consistent and repeatable simulants. Synthetic bone has been developed to be mechanically similar to human bone; however, it does not have the same viscoelastic properties. Bone acts as brittle and stiff material and fails instantly under high-energy events such as ballistic impacts. Consequently, bone simulants for use in ballistic testing should show comparable energy deposition to mammalian bones. This study aims to determine if Synbone® flat plates could be a viable proxy for Sus scrofa (domesticus) ribs in ballistic testing with 7.62 × 51 mm Full Metal Jacket ammunition. 5 mm, 6 mm and 12 mm quartered Synbone® plates were embedded into 10% ballistic gelatin and shot using 7.62 mm ammunition. The models were then analysed to compare the Synbone® to a previous Sus Scrofa (domesticus) rib study and focused on energy deposition, the number of fragments within the block, angle of deviation, onset of yaw, the temporary cavity, and the permanent wound channel. No significant difference was seen between the Sus Scrofa (domesticus) and the 5 mm Sybone®. There were significant differences observed between Sus Scrofa (domesticus) ribs and 6 mm Synbone® for the number of fragments, energy deposition and projectile tract diameter, and significant differences seen between Sus scrofa (domesticus) ribs and 12 mm Synbone® for the depth of onset of yaw, energy deposition and projectile tract diameter. In shooting crimes, ballistics tests are often recommended in order to reproduce the wound characteristics of the involved persons. For this purpose, several "simulants" can be used. However, despite the efforts in the research of "surrogates" in the field of forensic ballistic, the development of synthetic models needs still to be improved through a validation process based on specific real caseworks. This study has been triggered by the findings observed during the autopsy performed on two victims killed in the same shooting incident, with similar wounding characteristics; namely two retained head shots with ricochet against the interior wall of the skull; both projectiles have been recovered during the autopsies after migration in the brain parenchyma. The thickness of the different tissues and structures along the bullets trajectories as well as the incident angles between the bullets paths and the skull walls have been measured and reproduced during the assemblage of the synthetic head models. Two different types of models ("open shape" and "spherical") have been assembled using leather, polyurethane and gelatine to simulate respectively skin, bone and soft tissues. Six shots have been performed in total. The results of the models have been compared to the findings of post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) and the autopsy findings.Out of the six shots, two perforated the models and four were retained. When the projectile was retained, the use of both models allowed reproducing the wounds characteristics observed on both victims in terms of penetration and ricochet behaviour. However, the projectiles recovered from the models showed less deformation than the bullets collected during the autopsies. The "open shape" model allowed a better controlling on the shooting parameters than the "spherical" model. Finally, the difference in bullet deformation could be caused by the choice of the bone simulant, which might under-represent either the strength or the density of the human bone. Assessment of wound characteristics and the identification of various constituents of firearm discharge at autopsy play a key role in the determination of range of fire. In relation to wounds caused by shotguns, identification of the wad within the wound track, or of injury caused by the wad, is typically thought to suggest a fairly close range of fire. We present a case of a fatality due to a shotgun slug wound where the presence of the wad within the decedent's body was proposed by defense at criminal trial to favor accidental close range discharge during a struggle for the weapon—as opposed to the prosecution's contention of intentional firing of the weapon from a greater range and through an intermediate target. We undertook test firing of a shotgun of similar design to that which was fired during the interaction (a 12‐gauge pump‐action shotgun) using shotshells consistent with the slug that was recovered from the body (Winchester Super X brand), which demonstrated that the non‐attached fiber wad present in this shotshell design can accompany the slug over distances of at least up to 22 feet (6.7 m) and even after transit through intermediate targets such as a vehicle headrest. This work explores the use of surface-mesh flow solvers to model solid rocket internal ballistics with arbitrary grain geometry. Specifically, a surface-vorticity approach, originally intended for external flow applications, is adapted for internal flow analysis using boundary conditions that are suitable for solid rocket motors. In this study, an enhanced panel code is shown to be capable of resolving internal rocket flowfields with a striking level of fidelity and with such a degree of computational efficiency to make it valuable in the conceptual and preliminary design of rocket motors. In this process, the vortex paneling approach embodied within FlightStream® is refined using boundary conditions appropriate for solid rocket rotational flows. The simulation results are then compared to existing analytical solutions for cylindrical and planar chamber configurations exhibiting small taper angles and uniform headwall injection. For a more realistic validation case, the space shuttle's reusable solid rocket motor (RSRM) is examined. Guided by the analytical models, simple rotational and compressibility corrections are incorporated into the solver, and the results are subsequently compared to two other computational models and experimental measurements gathered from qualification motors. For the basic configurations, our results are shown to agree well with theoretical predictions. For the RSRM case, the corrected solution agrees well with the validation data in the first half of the motor; however, it becomes less robust in the aft region unless a recirculation zone boundary patch is applied; the latter approximates the added vorticity introduced by intersegmental gaps and the submerged nozzle effects. Booming technological advances and turbulent military reforms have promoted the continuous advancement of weapons and equipment. High-power microwave (HPM) weapons have changed the damage modes of traditional guns, missiles and other kinetic energy weapons, as well as having the huge advantage of "changing the rules of the game." The study of exterior ballistics of high-power microwave weapons has theoretical support for the design and development of weapons and the verification of performance indicators and is also an important basis in the firing application of high-power microwave weapons. By studying the coupling mechanism between HPM weapons and targets, an exterior ballistics description of HPM weapons is given According to the description of exterior ballistics, the differences between HPM and traditional weapons in definitions, accuracies, space trajectories, space descriptions and "end points" are summarized, and the exterior ballistics space transmission is established. This study reveals the nine major transmission laws of the exterior ballistics of HPM weapons. The constructed model and related theories of the transmission laws for exterior ballistics lay a theoretical foundation for the in-depth study of key technologies of HPM weapons, such as fire control and damage assessment. Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) have many interesting properties, mainly light weight, cost efficiency, low density, high compressive strength, high hardness and durability. Hence, they emerged as a boon to the development of personnel armors in the past. The current work aims to review various new methodologies adapted for the reinforcement of Alumina (Al 2 O 3) CMCs in recent times, including some of the interesting results obtained with respect to mechanical properties, suitability of the synthesized composites for armor applications, and the upcoming reinforcement trends. Finally, studies related to reinforcement in Al 2 O 3 CMCs, specifically towards armor applications have been consolidated to arrive at some of the important inferences for concluding reasonably. Projectile injuries to the face deserve particular attention to evaluate for involvement of critical structures and functional elements and treat the devastating effects on facial aesthetics. Ballistic trauma to the maxillofacial region often has significant soft tissue and bony defects, creating a greater challenge to the reconstructive surgeon. The main goals of treatment of projectile injuries to the face are decreasing the amount of contaminants and nonviable tissue at the site, ensuring functionality, and restoring aesthetic appearance. There exists a lack of robust research on the subject. Soft tissue injuries from high-velocity projectiles have changed the perspective on treating acute injuries to the face and neck. Injuries encountered during both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom give the author pause to reflect upon a different wounding pattern than that encountered in stateside trauma centers. Given the dissemination of high-velocity weaponry by enemy combatants such as the improvised explosive device, mortar round, and high-velocity rifles, a higher incidence of facial wounds has been reported. In view of the influence of projectile-barrel coupling on tank firing accuracy, a finite element model of projectile-barrel coupling based on vibration theory was established. By defining user subroutines to simulate the change of the physical field of interior ballistics, the load condition under which the propellant gas radial pressure acts on the inner wall of the barrel and varies with the motion of the projectile is realized. On this basis, the dynamic characteristics of projectile-barrel coupling considering the radial effect of propellant gas pressure were studied. The reference targets such as cradle, projectile and muzzle were selected for analysis, and compared with the situation without considering the radial effect of propellant gas pressure. The results show that the motion trend of the projectile in the bore and the response law of muzzle vibration change greatly when considering the radial effect of propellant gas pressure and these changes may seriously affect the law of projectile dispersion. The radial effect of propellant gas pressure can cause stronger dynamic response, which cannot be ignored in the simulation of artillery firing process. This article proposes an interior ballistic interval optimization method with the consideration of parameter uncertainty. Interior ballistic parameters such as charge mass, web thickness, powder aperture and chamber volume are considered as design variables and described by interval number. A one-dimensional two-phase interior ballistic model is constructed, and the MacCormack scheme is used to calculate the interior ballistic parameters. A Chebyshev surrogate model is constructed to replace the one-dimensional two-phase interior ballistic model and applied to the optimization process. For each set of design variables, affine arithmetic is introduced to calculate the interval bounds of the performance index of the interior ballistic, avoiding nested double-loop optimization and improving computational efficiency. The Pareto-optimal solution is searched for by an improved non-dominant sorting genetic algorithm. An example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Molecular ballistics combines molecular biological, forensic ballistic, and wound ballistic insights and approaches in the description, collection, objective investigation, and contextualization of the complex patterns of biological evidence that are generated by gunshots at biological targets. Setting out in 2010 with two seminal publications proving the principle that DNA from backspatter collected from inside surfaces of firearms can be retreived and successfully be analyzed, molecular ballistics covered a lot of ground until today. In this review, 10 years later, we begin with a comprehensive description and brief history of the field and lay out its intersections with other forensic disciplines like wound ballistics, forensic molecular biology, blood pattern analysis, and crime scene investigation. In an application guide section, we aim to raise consciousness to backspatter traces and the inside surfaces of firearms as sources of forensic evidence. Covering crime scene practical as well as forensic genetic aspects, we introduce operational requirements and lay out possible procedures, including forensic RNA analysis, when searching for, collecting, analyzing, and contextualizing such trace material. We discuss the intricacies and rationales of ballistic model building, employing different tissue, skin, and bone simulants and the advantages of the "triple-contrast" method in molecular ballistics and give advice on how to stage experimental shootings in molecular ballistic research. This paper presents a numerical and an analytical approach for calculation of internal ballistics parameters through determination of thermal and gasdynamic characteristics. The calculated parameters are validated through experimental tests on a real weapon system. The internal ballistic calculations are provided for two types of propellants using an analytical and a numerical model. Calculations and tests are performed for an anti-material rifle 12.7 mm. Weapon and ammunition testing is carried out according to the permanent international commission standard. Theoretical and experimental results for the gunpowder gases pressure and the muzzle velocity are compared. The good agreements between the calculated and the measured pressures and velocities increase the reliability of the estimated gunpowder gas temperatures in the barrel. The film Fracture Phenomena in Glass is a noteworthy case of a film reuse: it was published in the Encyclopaedia Cinematographica (EC) in 1976, bearing the signature E 2355. In this instance, surprisingly, the Institut für den Wissenschaftlichen Film (Institute for Scientific Film [IWF]), which produced, edited, distributed, and archived the EC films, reused ballistic film recordings from World War II. Produced at the Ballistic Institute of the Berlin-Gatow Air War Academy in 1942–1943 under the direction of Hubert Schardin, they were first published in 1944 as C 433 by the National Socialist predecessor institution, the Reich Institute for Film and Images in Science and the Classroom (Reichsanstalt für Film und Bild in Wissenschaft und Unterricht [RWU]). This reuse suggests that at least some of the EC films bear witness to telling discrepancies in political, historical, and epistemological classification within a distinctive worldwide project of postwar visual film research. This essay considers the controversial role of the encyclopedist Gotthard Wolf and the institutional history of the RWU/IWF by looking at examples of the reuse—or nonreuse—of ballistic films and concepts. As a parameter important ballistic, the research about polygonal and grooved barrels' behavior has not been widely carried out. The pressures, velocities, stresses, deformations, and strains generated by the firing of 9 mm × 19 mm ammunition in weapons with polygonal barrels are analyzed numerically and experimentally, compared with those generated in pistols with grooved barrels. The Finite Element Method with equal boundary and loading conditions was used in both types of guns, specifying the actual materials of the projectile and the barrels. Subsequently, experimental tests were carried out on various weapons with 9 mm ammunitions of 115, 122, and 124 gr. The results show that the 9 mm bullet fired in a polygonal barrel undergoes a maximum deformation towards its exterior of 0.178 mm and interior of 0.158 mm, with stress up to 295.85 MPa. Compared with 0.025 mm maximum external deformation and 0.112 mm internal deformation of 9 mm projectiles fired in a grooved barrel, with stress up to 269.79 MPa. The deformation in the polygonal barrel is in a greater area, but the rifling impression left is less deep, making its identification more difficult. Although there are differences in the stresses and strains obtained, similar velocity and pressure parameters are achieved in the two types of barrels. The sabot discard asymmetry caused by spinning affects the exterior ballistic characteristics and shooting accuracy of a gun with the rifled barrel. To gain a deeper understanding of the complex sabot discard performance for the armor-piercing, fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS), a numerical investigation is performed to assess the effects of the spin rate on the sabot discard characteristics. We obtain the calculation boundary by the interior ballistics and the firing conditions and carry out a numerical simulation under different spin rates using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and a dynamic mesh technique. We analyze four aspects of sabot discard characteristics, namely, sabot separation, rod surface pressure, rod aerodynamic parameters, and discarding quantization parameters. Computational results show that the sabot separation nearly presents perfect symmetry at 0 rad/s, and when the initial rate of the sabot increases, there is more obvious separation asymmetry, and it contributes to the relative position variation among the sabots and the rod. The distinction of rod surface pressure indicates that the choked flow is the strongest flow source, and the spin rate has almost no effect on the pressure of the rod front part. When the monitoring point moves towards the fins, the pressure distribution and intensity change more dramatically. The initial spin rate and separation asymmetry produce a variation in the surface pressure, which further influences the rod aerodynamic characteristics. The discarding quantization parameters exhibit a certain variation rule with its spin rate. 2,000 rad/s has a significant influence on the rod aerodynamic coefficients during the weak coupling phase. When the spin rate is in the range of 0–900 rad/s, the discarding characteristics remain the same. However, when the spin rate exceeds 900 rad/s, the separation time and aerodynamic impulse have a quadratic polynomial relationship with the rate. Current methods used in terminal ballistics to determine the volume of temporary cavities created by projectiles in soft tissue simulants (such as ballistic soap) usually involve silicone-casting to obtain the cavity moulds. However, these methods have important drawbacks including their little sensitivity and precision, besides the fact that they are destructive. Imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) might not only overcome those limitations but also offer useful tools for digitally reporting the scientific results. This work accomplished the 3D digital reconstruction of the cavities created by different projectiles in ballistic soap blocks. This way, the total volume of the cavities, the projectile penetration depths, and other measurements were determined, rendering better capabilities when compared to the current silicone method. All these features were achieved through the CT analysis and 3D Slicer imaging software. In addition, it is worth mentioning that the method can preserve the evidence by digitally obtaining, signing, and storing the infographic videos displaying the 3D-reconstructed cavities. Introduction: Synthetic skin simulants are used both in wound ballistics and forensic investigations and should display similar mechanical properties to human tissue and therefore need to be validated. It is recognised that skin simulants may have a significantly different performance when different backing combinations are used; therefore, it is essential to specify and control the backing material. Roebuck 1518 synthetic chamois (RBK) backed by 20% ballistic gelatin has been validated as a suitable skin simulant; this study looks at validating the RBK simulant when backed by 10% ballistic gelatin. Methods: Two layers of RBK synthetic chamois backed by calibrated 10% ballistic gelatin were placed onto the long face of the block and secured. Steel spheres with various sectional densities were fired using a custom-made gas gun to determine the V50 of the simulants and compared with the predicted V50. Results: The results demonstrate that for a sectional density between 2.1 and 6.6 g/cm2, the skin simulants backed by 10% gelatin are within the 35% error bounds predicted by James' patent equation. All samples had a close fit to the regression line (R2 = 0.9738), and a Spearman rho test indicates that there is a "strong" negative correlation between sectional density and the V50 (Rs =− 0.957, p = 0.00). Conclusions: This validation study confirms that RBK synthetic simulant backed by 10% gelatin is a suitable skin simulant when testing non-deforming projectiles with sectional densities ranging from 2.1 to 6.6 g/cm2. A "plated bullet" has a thin layer of electroplated metal covering the lead core of the projectile. In certain situations, this thin layer of electroplated metal can fracture upon discharge of the firearm. When such fracturing occurs, vaporous lead can escape through the fracture lines of the spinning projectile, resulting in a spiral‐shaped deposition of dark residue surrounding a central bullet defect. The spiral‐shaped pattern is referred to as "comet‐tailing," or the "vortex effect." In this report, three homicide cases with associated comet‐tailing are presented. Experimental and numerical studies on the effect of oblique impacts on the ballistic properties of GFRP were carried out. Ballistic tests of specimens using a steel sphere with a diameter of 6.35 mm were performed for inclination angles from the normal of 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 degrees. Ballistic curves and ballistic limits for each case were obtained, and a function approximating these results was proposed. The size of the delamination area at different angles was also analyzed. The results showed that the most catastrophic failures cases of impact were impacts with angles of 0°–30°. Computational studies of impact loading during oblique impacts were carried out in LS-DYNA using the mesoscale yarn-level model (MSM). In materials, energy can propagate by means of two limiting regimes: diffusive and ballistic. Ballistic energy transport can be fast and efficient and often occurs with a constant speed. Using twodimensional infrared spectroscopy methods, we discovered ballistic energy transport via individual polyethylene chains with a remarkably high speed of 1440 m/s and the mean free path length of 14.6 Å in solution at room temperature. Whereas the transport via the chains occurs ballistically, the mechanism switches to diffusive with the effective transport speed of 130 m/s at the end-groups attached to the chains. A unifying model of the transport in molecules is presented with clear time separation and additivity among the transport along oligomeric fragments, which occurs ballistically, and the transport within the disordered fragments, occurring diffusively. The results open new avenues for making novel elements for molecular electronics, including ultrafast energy transporters, controlled chemical reactors, and sub-wavelength quantum nanoseparators.
