Part of a health occupations program, these instructional units consist of materials for use by those who are studying to become practical nurses. The first unit deals with the various aspects of pediatric nursing, including the growth and development levels of children, diseases and conditions specific to children, and the application of health care principles in pediatric nursing. Addressed in the individual modules are the following age groups of children: newborn, infant, school-age child, and adolescent. The next unit, which is devoted to mental health, covers personality and behavior, mental health and mental illness, current trends in treating mental illness, suicide and death, and drug abuse. This unit stresses the development of communication skills and making observations through the use of group discussion, role playing, and audiovisual aids. The units are comprised of a series of learning modules, each of which contains a rationale, performance objectives, learning activities and answers, terminology, and posttests. (MN)

This document provides two separate curriculum guides for pediatrics faculty to use in teaching medical students. The first section contains the alcohol abuse curriculum guide; the second section contains the drug abuse curriculum guide. The drug abuse guide concentrates on cannabis as a paradigm for all nonalcoholic drugs of abuse. Each guide includes an introduction and five chapters. Chapter 1 of each guide lists curriculum goals and objectives. Chapter 2 examines the pediatrician's role in the curriculum, focusing on subject matter, clinical skills, and attitude. Chapter 3 looks at several areas of core subject matter: history; epidemiology; definitions; biochemical, pharmacological, and physiological effects of alcohol (cannabis); psychological effects of alcohol (cannabis); psychological factors; and treatment. The alcohol abuse curriculum also contains a section on patterns of alcohol use in children and adolescents. Chapter 4 focuses on related drug issues. For the alcohol abuse curriculum, these issues include combined alcohol-polydrug use, management of acute intoxication and untoward reaction, the pregnant adolescent drinker, the fetal alcohol syndrome, and children of alcoholic parents. For the drug abuse curriculum, issues include multiple drug use, fetal drug syndromes, the drug-abusing mother, and management of untoward reactions and overdosage. Chapter 5 considers the problem of the student drinker (drug user). Both curricula conclude with several pages of references and appendices containing Attitudes and Opinions Questionnaires for students and annotated lists of curriculum material. (NB)

This fact sheet uses a question-and-answer format to summarize what is known about HIV/AIDS (Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) and pediatric AIDS and applies this information to children in school settings. Questions and answers address the following topics: what the AIDS disease and HIV infection are; estimates of the number of children infected with HIV; ways that children become infected with the HIV virus; testing of children for the presence of the HIV antibody; the use of drugs to treat children with AIDS; the neurological and developmental effects of AIDS and HIV in children; services that might be needed in the school setting for the HIV-infected child; who should know that a child in school has AIDS or is HIV-positive; and precautions that should be taken to prevent exposure to HIV by school-aged children. This training manual for emergency medical technicians, one of 14 modules that comprise the Emergency Victim Care textbook, covers childbirth and pediatric emergencies. Objectives stated for the two chapters are for the students to be able to describe: emergency procedures for normal childbirth, unusual childbirth emergencies, emergency care for the premature infant and for the woman suffering from a miscarriage, emergency baptismal procedures, and emergency care for specified pediatric emergencies. Informative material is provided on normal deliveries; unusual deliveries; premature infants; miscarriage; emergency baptism; pediatrics and child development; specific pediatric emergencies, such as airway obstruction, artificial ventilation, cardiac massage, fever, convulsions; pediatric patients with heart defects; neurological evaluation of infants; and child abuse. "Utilization of Skills in the Care of the Parent Child System" (NS 139) is an associate degree nursing course offered at Chattanooga State Technical Community College to provide essential theory and experience in caring for the parent-child system throughout various stages of development. The course syllabus for NS 139 begins with information on class, laboratory, and credit hours; prerequisites; textbooks; week-by-week course content; course objectives; evaluation criteria; and curriculum coding. Next, instructions are provided for class assignments, and information is presented on labor and delivery, nursery, and post partum routines. The remainder of the syllabus presents objectives, textual information, assignments, and questions keyed to the textbook for each of the seven course units. The units focus on: (1) pregnancy and labor; (2) adaptations of the maternal system, parent-infant system, and newborn immediately following childbirth as well as health deviations during labor and pregnancy; (3) assessing the newborn, effects of prematurity, and health deviations associated with the newborn; (4) nutritional requirements of infants and children, procedures for the hospitalization of children, and diseases and accidents during childhood; (5) health deviations of the respiratory subsystem and cystic fibrosis; (6) the effects of congenital defects, the effect of cerebral palsy on the child's state of adaptation, and nursing care of the parent-child system when the child has a developmental health deviation; and (7) failure to thrive and urinary subsystem health deviations in children. This book begins with a progress report on preventing childhood injuries. Settings for pediatric care are discussed as well as The Injury Prevention Program (TIPP). Child abuse is also addressed in the first section. In section two, specific childhood injuries and interventions are discussed. Each chapter begins with an overview of the problem, followed by appropriate preventive measures. If they are available, passive as well as active interventions are recommended. In some cases, treatment is included in the chapter. The final segment, titled "Implications for Public Policy," outlines community, state, and national efforts to be undertaken by pediatricians, both individually and collectively, to focus public and governmental attention on injury prevention.
