Climate change mitigation by increased paper recycling can alleviate the two-sided pressure on the Swedish forest sector: supplying growing demands for wood-based products and increasing the forest carbon sink. This study assesses two scenarios for making use of a reduced demand for primary pulp resulting from an increased paper recycling rate in Sweden, from the present 72% to 78%. A Conservation scenario uses the saved primary pulp to reduce pulplog harvests so as to increase the forest carbon sink concomitant with constant overall wood product supply. In contrast, a Substitution scenario uses the saved primary pulp to produce man-made cellulosic fibers (MMCF) from dissolving pulp replacing cotton fiber, implying increased overall wood product supply. Our results suggest that utilizing efficiency gains in paper recycling to reduce pulplog harvests is better from a climate change mitigation perspective than producing additional MMCF to substitute cotton fiber. This conclusion holds even when assuming the use of by-products from dissolving pulp making and an indirect increase in MMCF availability. Hence, unless joint improvements across the value chain materialize, the best climate change mitigation option from increased paper recycling in Sweden would seemingly be to reduce fellings rather than producing additional MMCF.

We present a comprehensive review of keV-scale sterile neutrino Dark Matter, collecting views and insights from all disciplines involved - cosmology, astrophysics, nuclear, and particle physics - in each case viewed from both theoretical and experimental/observational perspectives. After reviewing the role of active neutrinos in particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology, we focus on sterile neutrinos in the context of the Dark Matter puzzle. Here, we first review the physics motivation for sterile neutrino Dark Matter, based on challenges and tensions in purely cold Dark Matter scenarios. We then round out the discussion by critically summarizing all known constraints on sterile neutrino Dark Matter arising from astrophysical observations, laboratory experiments, and theoretical considerations. In this context, we provide a balanced discourse on the possibly positive signal from X-ray observations. Another focus of the paper concerns the construction of particle physics models, aiming to explain how sterile neutrinos of keV-scale masses could arise in concrete settings beyond the Standard Model of elementary particle physics. The paper ends with an extensive review of current and future astrophysical and laboratory searches, highlighting new ideas and their experimental challenges, as well as future perspectives for the discovery of sterile neutrinos. ©2017

Machine learning is an important applied research area in particle physics, beginning with applications to high-level physics analysis in the 1990s and 2000s, followed by an explosion of applications in particle and event identification and reconstruction in the 2010s. In this document we discuss promising future research and development areas in machine learning in particle physics with a roadmap for their implementation, software and hardware resource requirements, collaborative initiatives with the data science community, academia and industry, and training the particle physics community in data science. The main objective of the document is to connect and motivate these areas of research and development with the physics drivers of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider and future neutrino experiments and identify the resource needs for their implementation. Additionally we identify areas where collaboration with external communities will be of great benefit.

Oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) is one of the most copious residues which are left behind after the oil refining process. It is categorized as short fiber which can be used in the production of pulp and paper. In most cases, EFB fibers need other supporting agent to enhance their wet and dry strength of paper properties. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the effect of paper strength after incorporating different percentage of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) of 0, 3, 6 and 9% with EFB fibers. The standard method in producing the hand-sheet was applied. Comparison is carried among all samples to determine the optimum percentage of MCC which is suitable to strengthen the paper. Results showed that physical properties of paper in terms of porosity do not have significant effect while the opacity was slightly decreased. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength and tear resistance for MCC papers are better especially paper tensile strength. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image showed the morphological structure of paper surface that contains without and with MCC. In conclusion mechanical properties of the hand-sheets are improved with the incorporation of less than 10% MCC into the pulp fibers.

In chemical pulping process, lignin is targeted to be dissolved and eliminated as much as possible in order to obtain better fiber separation. A primary study was carried out to investigate the effect of sodium hydroxide pretreatment prior to bamboo chemical pulping. The selected bamboo species was Gigantochloa scortechinii which is a well-known bamboo in Malaysia. The bamboo chips were soaked in 2 % sodium hydroxide solution for 6 hours at 60 °C. These treated chips were cooked at 14 % and 18 % of alkali active via kraft pulping process. The unbleached pulp was obtained and made into paper. The pulp and paper were tested according to pulp yield, pulp freeness, paper optical, paper physical and paper mechanical properties. The results exhibited that by using treated bamboo chips, the value of pulp yield, freeness and paper brightness increasing. Slight decrement was observed for mechanical paper properties such as tensile, tear and burst strength. Chemical pretreatment prior to pulping process was investigated to offer significant effects to the pulp and paper properties of bamboo Gigantochloa scortechinii. Hence, mild kraft pulping can be carried out to produce bamboo unbleached pulps. In addition, dependency on bleaching sequences can also be declined.

A flexible and disposable paper-based pH sensor fabricated with a pencil-drawn working electrode and a Ag/AgCl paste reference electrode is demonstrated for the first time to show pH response by the potentiometric principle. The sensor substrate is made of chromatography paper with a wax-printed hydrophobic area, and various types of carbon pencils are tested as working electrodes. The pH sensitivities of the electrodes drawn by carbon pencils with different hardnesses range from 16.5 to 26.9 mV/pH. The proposed sensor is expected to be more robust against shape change in electrodes on a flexible substrate than other types of chemiresistive/amperometric pH sensors.

This position paper gives an overview of how the COMET project (COordination and iMplementation of a pan-European instrumenT for radioecology, a combined Collaborative Project and Coordination and Support Action under the EC/Euratom 7th Framework Programme) contributed to the integration and sustainability of radioecology in Europe via its support to and interaction with the European Radioecology ALLIANCE. COMET built upon the foundations laid by the FP7 project STAR (Strategic Network for Integrating Radioecology) Network of Excellence in radioecology. In close association with the ALLIANCE, and based on the Strategic Research Agenda (SRA), COMET developed innovative mechanisms for joint programming and implementation of radioecological research. To facilitate and foster future integration under a common federating structure, research activities developed within COMET were targeted at radioecological research needs identified in the SRA. Furthermore, COMET maintained and developed strong mechanisms for knowledge exchange, dissemination and training to enhance and maintain European capacity, competence and skills in radioecology. In the short term the work to promote radioecology will continue under the H2020 project EJP-CONCERT (European Joint Programme for the Integration of Radiation Protection Research). The EJP-CONCERT project (2015–2020) aims to develop a sustainable structure for promoting and administering joint programming and open research calls in the field of radiation protection research for Europe. In the longer term, radioecological research will be facilitated by the ALLIANCE. External funding is, however, required in order to be able to answer emerging research needs.

This work represents the first demonstration of large area, flexible, paper based Gr/MoS2 broadband photodetector using low-cost solution processed hydrothermal method and enhancement in photodetection through strain modulation by assembling the device on PDMS. Optimization in terms of process parameters were done to obtain trilayer MoS2 over Gr-cellulose paper. Under strain, potential barrier variation and piezopotential induced in MoS2 leads to 79.41% enhancement in photodetection in the visible region. Piezopotential induced in MoS2 lowers the conduction band energy thereby increasing the effective electric field favoring easy electron-hole separation. The advantage of vertically stacked Gr/MoS2 for photodetector is the utilization of the entire area as a junction where an effective separation of electron-hole pair occurs. Detailed mechanism studies in terms of potential barrier variation in Gr/MoS2 and energy band diagram is presented to understand the proposed phenomena. The present work demonstrates the significance of few layer MoS2 or Gr over Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) grown counterparts for strain modulated photosensing. The results provide an excellent approach for fabrication of low-cost heterojunctions for improved optoelectronic performance which can be further extended to similar 2D materials heterojunctions for analog, digital and optoelectronic applications.

The aim of the current investigation is the rotor vibrations generated by the disturbances caused the different types of incoming wake-like flows. Those wakes arriving at the tested rotor were created by two ways: a passive wake generator (immobile disk) and an upstream rotating rotor as an active wake generator. The influence of both wakes on the tested rotor was studied in a water flume. A model of the tested three-bladed rotor designed using Glauert’s optimum theory at an optimal tip speed ratio λ = 5 was placed in both “passive” and “active” wakes to recognize dissimilarities on the vibrations of the tested rotor. The distance from the wake generators to the tested rotor was varied from 4 to 8 rotor diameters. Also, the shift between the rotor axis and axis of the incoming wakes was changed to 0, 0.5 and 1 rotor diameters. The flow condition before rotor was measured with high temporal accuracy using LDA. The turbulent intensity of the incoming wake flows changed from 3 to 16% due to the types of the wake generators. Power and thrust characteristics and their pulsations of the tested rotor were measured by strain gauges. The dependences of power coefficients from tip speed ratios and positions of the wake generators were documented. The present study showed a strong influence of the initial flow from the two different wake generators on the rotor vibrations.

The Actuator Line Method exists for more than a decade and has become a well established choice for simulating wind rotors in computational fluid dynamics. Numerous implementations exist and are used in the wind energy research community. These codes were verified by experimental data such as the MEXICO experiment. Often the verification against other codes were made on a very broad scale. Therefore this study attempts first a validation by comparing two different implementations, namely an adapted version of SOWFA/OpenFOAM and EllipSys3D and also a verification by comparing against experimental results from the MEXICO and NEW MEXICO experiments.

Flexible carbon nanotube composite paper (CNT-cp) was applied to the surface electrode, which showed good performance that is comparable to that of conventional Ag/AgCl electrodes. The SR-based EMG signal system integrating an 8-Schmitt-trigger network and the multiple-CNT-cp-electrode array successfully detected weak EMG signals even when the subject's body is in the motion, which was difficult to achieve using the conventional technique. The feasibility of the SR-based EMG detection technique was confirmed by demonstrating its applicability to robot hand control.

PRISM (Polarized Radiation Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission) was proposed to ESA in May 2013 as a large-class mission for investigating within the framework of the ESA Cosmic Vision program a set of important scientific questions that require high resolution, high sensitivity, full-sky observations of the sky emission at wavelengths ranging from millimeter-wave to the far-infrared. PRISM 's main objective is to explore the distant universe, probing cosmic history from very early times until now as well as the structures, distribution of matter, and velocity ows throughout our Hubble volume. PRISM will survey the full sky in a large number of frequency bands in both intensity and polarization and will measure the absolute spectrum of sky emission more than three orders of magnitude better than COBE FIRAS. The data obtained will allow us to precisely measure the absolute sky brightness and polarization of all the components of the sky emission in the observed frequency range, separating the primordial and extragalactic components cleanly from the galactic and zodiacal light emissions. The aim of this Extended White Paper is to provide a more detailed overview of the highlights of the new science that will be made possible by PRISM, which include: (1) the ultimate galaxy cluster survey using the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect, detecting approximately 106 clusters extending to large redshift, including a characterization of the gas temperature of the brightest ones (through the relativistic corrections to the classic SZ template) as well as a peculiar velocity survey using the kinetic SZ effect that comprises our entire Hubble volume; (2) a detailed characterization of the properties and evolution of dusty galaxies, where the most of the star formation in the universe took place, the faintest population of which constitute the diffuse CIB (Cosmic Infrared Background); (3) a characterization of the B modes from primordial gravity waves generated during in ation and from g

Reduction of graphene oxide is primarily important because different reduction methods may result in graphene with totally different properties. For systematically exploring the reduction of graphene oxide, studies of the temperature-dependent electrical properties of graphene oxide (GO) are urgently required. In this work, for the first time, broadband dielectric spectroscopy was used to carry out an in situ investigation on the transition of the electrical properties of GO paper from -40 to 150 degrees C. The results clearly reveal a very interesting four-stage transition of electrical properties of GO paper with increasing temperature: insulator below 10 degrees C (stage 1), semiconductor at between 10 and 90 degrees C (stage 2), insulator at between 90 and 100 degrees C (stage 3), and semiconductor again at above 100 degrees C (stage 4). Subsequently, the transition mechanism was discussed in combination with detailed dielectric properties, microstructure and thermogravimetric analyses. It is suggested that the temperature-dependent transition of electronic properties of GO is closely associated with the ion mobility, water molecules removal and the reduction of GO in the GO paper. Most importantly, the present work clearly demonstrates the reduction of GO paper starts at above 100 degrees C.

Two optically brightened commercial papers were subjected to 72 hours continuous exposure to graphic arts daylight simulating fluorescent lamps at 1.4 and 4.4 klux. At the higher illuminance level, a CIELAB colour difference of 1.0 was reached in approximately 3 and 50 hours for the two papers. The approach presented in the paper is based on the principles of participatory design (PD), to enhance the use of these methods within the areas of educational research (ER), lighting, and architecture. This approach aims to include participants of educational spaces and incorporate their views prior to design interventions. Two workshops were designed to support teachers' participation through hands-on activities. Twenty-eight teachers participated in the workshops. Scale models corresponding to two of the school's classrooms were used to initiate discussions regarding the interconnection between spatial layouts, lighting, and learning activities. The workshops' data collection analysis assisted the research group in understanding the school's spatial and learning characteristics. The information gathered from the workshops provided additional knowledge and informed the research project in a way that allowed for further development and changes within the project related to the additional variables measured along with light. According to the analysis, there is a correlation between the activity and the desired layout of the space, while the type of equipment also varies according to the task.

A trade association is a not-for-profit organization made up of companies and/or individuals with common interests or who work in the same industry. They act as a representative body for the industry they represent. As the 'industry voice', trade associations speak on behalf of their members to government, agencies, regulators, the media, and other opinion formers. There are several trade associations connected to the construction industry in all Nordic countries. The purpose of this paper is to investigate what role they play in improving procurement and project delivery in the Nordic countries. Based on interviews with trade association representatives across all Nordic countries, the paper maps their structures, roles, and strategies for involving in procurement and project delivery across the construction industry in each country. Similarities and differences are analysed and discussed considering the situation in each country. The result shows that trade associations have important and similar roles in each country, motivated by the wish to support their members. The first observation is that most trade associations across the Nordics are actively involved in developing procurement trends and knowledge accumulation. The motivation for engaging in procurement and project delivery is the well-being of members. They all depend on fair competition and access to market, and they all need to be associated with successful projects. The second observation is that it seems generally accepted across the trade associations that it is important to promote more collaborative procurement strategies and project delivery methods. The third observation is that all trade associations across the Nordics take an active role in gathering, analysing, and distributing knowledge and experiences connected to this development. Lighting in buildings today is a multi-disciplinary task. Increased complexity and specialization have led to a split process where coordination between disciplines is lacking. Despite extensive technical development, daylight and electric light are still planned in separate processes, often resulting in over-lit environments where energy savings, health and spatial potentials of daylight are not fully utilized. To address these problems, this paper introduces the walking seminar as a method to bridge and increase knowledge across disciplines in the field of lighting. The seminar was held at the Stockholm Public Library, and included invited participants with different professions and expertise: an architect, an electrical consultant, a lighting designer, a librarian, a caretaker, and an architectural historian who shared their perspectives on light. Based on the seminar, findings relevant for today's practice are presented, both for the specific case in itself, a listed building and an active library, and at a more general level concerning lighting standards and the interaction of daylight and electric light. The main future task for the building sector is to preserve and develop our existing building stock, which includes lighting. Sustainable and long-term solutions require that daylight, electric light and spatial lighting design are planned as an integrated whole, based on the characteristics of the specific building. This paper presents the electron and photon energy calibration obtained with the ATLAS detector using 140 fb−1 of LHC proton-proton collision data recorded at √s = 13 TeV between 2015 and 2018. Methods for the measurement of electron and photon energies are outlined, along with the current knowledge of the passive material in front of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter. The energy calibration steps are discussed in detail, with emphasis on the improvements introduced in this paper. The absolute energy scale is set using a large sample of Z-boson decays into electron-positron pairs, and its residual dependence on the electron energy is used for the first time to further constrain systematic uncertainties. The achieved calibration uncertainties are typically 0.05% for electrons from resonant Z-boson decays, 0.4% at ET ∼ 10 GeV, and 0.3% at ET ∼ 1 TeV; for photons at ET ∼ 60 GeV, they are 0.2% on average. This is more than twice as precise as the previous calibration. The new energy calibration is validated using J/ → ee and radiative Z-boson decays., QC 20240308

ITER is of key importance in the European fusion roadmap as it aims to prove the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion as a future energy source. The EUROfusion consortium of labs within Europe is contributing to the preparation of ITER scientific exploitation and operation and aspires to exploit ITER outcomes in view of DEMO. The paper provides an overview of the major progress obtained recently, carried out in the frame of the new (initiated in 2021) EUROfusion work-package called 'Preparation of ITER Operation' (PrIO). How can contemporary light art installations impact the sensorial perception of the urban context to modify and reinterpret urban space? In Robert Irwin's words, how can they provide "...an extended way of looking at the world"? In this paper, we examine how temporary light installations may impact the public realm by modifying citizens' perceptions of moments in the city: a habitual urban passage is interrupted with a temporal experience, changing the way the urban space is experienced. We explore how site-specific light installations create unique intersections of audience and spatial perception through the artists' intent of creating new urban atmospheres through an experiential layer added onto the urban fabric during light festivals. To do so we analyze and discuss two light installations that we designed and executed, which were shortlisted for the 2022 [d]arc awards. Both projects took part in larger urban light festivals and were located within urban passages. "Reflecting on Troy"[Author 1 - Troy Glow Light Festival] created a temporal light graffiti in an urban alley, while "Riddle 102"[Authors 2,3 - Nobel Week Lights], a dynamic lighting installation in a 231m pedestrian tunnel, created an immersive environment that alters the perception of the tunnel's physical dimensions. Through reflections, as well as visitor and curator reviews, we unpack the intent and impact of the works on the perception of the urban context. We discuss and analyze the similarities and differences between the two urban settings, identify the design processes and principles pertinent to site-specific light installations [materials, lighting fixtures, testing] and address the impact darkness and over-lit spaces have over spatial perception. Besides the operational and embodied carbon associated with the physical building, how significant is the influence of the heterogenous nature of household decision making in whole-life decarbonisation of the housing sector? This paper investigates the effects of explicitly considering these factors through agent-based modelling (ABM) of households integrated in bottom-up building stock modelling considering typologies of physical houses (existing and new/future) and different households, and how these might evolve to 2050 in the State of Victoria, Australia. The state population is represented by household typologies based on socio-economic status, tenure, and decisions as influenced by financial, physical/family needs and behavioural factors. The ABM is implemented using Python MESA software and the different house typologies’ whole-life carbon are calculated using the Australian Zero Emission House (AusZEH) modelling software and the Environmental Performance in Construction (EPiC) LCA database, respectively. Considering household decisions yielded higher operational carbon reduction on average across various scenarios, however these have less impact on reducing embodied carbon. And in Victoria, with increasing trends in population and housing demand, embodied carbon dominates whole-life carbon (WLC) outcomes. The heterogeneity of household decisions cannot be ignored and should be further studied along with embodied carbon reduction strategies and a broad range of scenarios that consider the dynamic and uncertain nature of factors that drive and influence the WLC of buildings.

Design optimization and aeroelastic load evaluation for wind turbines are still infeasible for CFD due to computational cost. These tasks are carried out using 3D engineering aerodynamic methods, where the local aerodynamic loads are obtained from tabulated 2D aerodynamic polars, which makes the models fast. With recent developments such as highly flexible blades, coned/prebent/swept blades, the relative inflow direction to the “inner” 2D airfoil section systems can have a significant component in the spanwise direction. The Crossflow Principle (CP) is used to treat the effects of this in a physically consistent manner. Cases dominated by pressure forces are described well with the CP method, but it is shown in the paper that CP fails to describe the part of the forces stemming from the friction forces correctly. It is shown in the paper that the power loss due to friction forces will be underestimated with the crossflow principle for rotors with significantly swept blades or other designs with a significant amount of local crossflow on the blades. The present work presents a simple model to correct the baseline crossflow principle method to take into account also the friction force part in a consistent manner. The model is validated with 3D CFD results on a 2D airfoil section. It is shown that the new model successfully corrects for the addition of the viscous forces due to spanwise flow component. The paper includes examples of the effect of using the model on rotor designs with different amounts of blade sweep simulated using a blade element momentum (BEM) and blade element vortex cylinder (BEVC) methods.

This paper addresses the challenge of incorporating electricity prices into wind turbine design methods and shows how price volatility drives wind turbines towards larger rotors and lower specific power. Since wind speed and electricity prices fluctuate, current efforts to estimate a wind turbine’s revenue are based on time-series approaches. However, this paper presents a new way of accounting for price volatility based on wind distributions, which is computationally cheap and easily integrates with current wind turbine and farm design methods and tools. The new method demonstrates that a traditional wind turbine can lose more than 15% of its revenue in open energy markets like Denmark due to price volatility. Designing turbines with lower specific power can substantially increase revenue by producing more energy at low wind speeds with higher energy demand and electricity prices.

This paper provides an insight into ongoing research aimed at designing a morphing wing with the ability to continuously adapt its aerodynamic shape. The wing is targeted at a general purpose unmanned aerial vehicle. The morphing wing concept outlined in the paper is based on continuous camber changes of the wing leading and trailing edges, allowing optimal performance in different flight regimes. The aeroelastic tailoring method is used to design the load carrying structure of the wing in order to define the optimal stiffness and strength of the structure, which are considered as fixed in subsequent design steps. The research proposes a novel modular design approach that combines aerodynamic shape optimisation and aeroelastic considerations for designing morphing wing surfaces.

This paper is part of the author's thesis wherein she attempted to investigate the hypothesis that a light festival is not only an entertainment based light show but could also be a sustainable renewal strategy for dead urban spaces. 'Public space is our open-air living room' [1], where people meet, interact and replenish their body and mind away from work and home. However, due to various reasons, the current pandemic being one of them, has led to the present generation being seen as an indoor generation [2]. As a result, while a lot of urban spaces are tending to be 'abandoned and left areas that have lost their function' [3]. The author's thesis is a qualitative study to check the feasibility of light festivals as a sustainable strategy to tackle the lifelessness of such dead urban spaces. This paper in particular, presents a qualitative case study of 4 light festivals. This was achieved through both primary sources in the form of personal interviews with organisers and systematic online desk study of the secondary sources of information available as reports by various national and international agencies, journals and peer reviewed papers published by researchers in various online journals of lighting and architecture. These festivals were chosen on the basis of their initial intentions of inception to match the impetus for this study. The success of the festivals is studied with respect to achievement of initial objectives. These are then qualitatively analysed under the categories of image regeneration, revenue generation and job generation to assess the holistic impact of light festivals at various locations in the world. The results of the study suggest that light festivals add playfulness and a sense of identity to public urban scape. The interventions, being temporary in nature, may disappear, but the memory of the event remains in collective memory.
