This editorial establishes the context for our special issue, devoted to exploring CO2 allocation and equity considerations within the framework of China's ambitions for carbon neutrality. As the world's largest greenhouse gas emitter, China has made a pivotal development in mitigating climate change efforts with its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. This collection of 16 diverse papers delves into recent advancements, challenges, and thematic explorations related to carbon dioxide emissions, providing a holistic analysis of the allocation mechanisms and the critical balance between equity and efficiency. The contributions, which span a wide range of disciplines, collectively reveal the nuances of integrating economic growth, social justice, and environmental stewardship in China's transition to a sustainable, low -carbon future. The editorial not only synthesizes the key insights from the included papers but also frames the overarching narrative, highlighting the significance of collaborative and equitable approaches in achieving China's carbon neutrality targets.

Digitalization and sustainability represent two global mainstreams, which affect many dimensions of economic activity and daily life. However, their interaction remains still underexploited with different synergies and tradeoffs between these goals. This Virtual Special Issue (VSI) entitled "Digital technology and energy sustainability: impacts and policy needs" presents recent research on the nexus between digital technology and energy sustainability. This editorial introduces seven recent studies on a variety of topics, presenting core materials and guidance in the related domains. The findings indicate that scope, topic, measurement, method, and data might be in contrast or even in contradiction to previous studies. Although the black box of the complex nexus between digital technology and energy sustainability is still not fully uncovered, the findings indicate that the spatial factor and technology-induced rebound effect are most likely the underlying mechanisms. Additional future research directions for exploring the digitalization-sustainability interaction are discussed in this VSI.

Inequality is a growing public concern and economic threat. The degree of which, however, varies greatly depending on the choice of indicators for measurement. In this paper, we compare the strength and weaknesses of the existing indicators such as income and wealth and propose a new measure of inequality based on household electricity consumption. We believe that our measure has the advantage of capturing both service flows and stock values of durables, embodying both the outcome and opportunity inequality, and confronting fewer measurement issues. The new inequality measure based on electricity consumption may complement the existing ones by providing a relatively complete and well-balanced picture of the overall welfare inequality.

The world is confronted with increasing uncertainty and divisive threats to a sustainable global transition. Deglobalization is driving economic decoupling, and the pandemic is further preventing social exchange. The outcome of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference is a rare source of positive news. This special issue, entitled "Space Reconstruction in China's Sustainable Transition: Land, Energy and Carbon Emission", makes a timely academic contribution in response to these problems by presenting some recent research concerns and advances. This introductory article presents the latest policy debate and summarizes the major findings from six articles covered in the special issue. We show that academic society is worried about the negative effect of divisive trends on sustainable transition. Moreover, China's great spatial heterogeneity calls for an equitable and stable strategy to direct the transition process.

This special issue aims to focus on the impact of the emerging digital technologies on the sustainability of energy systems, and consequently the needs for policy measures to provide an appropriate regulatory framework and confront associated unintended challenges. Different and innovative methodological approaches are encouraged. The content of this special issue is not limited to a certain country. The editors welcome any case studies from developed and developing countries with clear relevance for global digital technology development. Topics of specific interest include, but are not limited to, the following: Impacts of digital technology and digitalization practice on energy systems, climate and, the environment. Possible changes resulting from digitalization in electricity generation, mobility, housing, etc. and consequences of energy digitalization for energy market reforms. Impacts of digital technology and digitalization on economic growth, social inequality, sustainability, and quality of life. Impacts of digital technology on access to affordable modern energy services, especially in rural areas. Policy responses to deal with the high energy consumption of new digital infrastructure in energy systems. The role of digital technology in supporting energy security. Emerging questions about energy sustainability during the growth of digital technology.

The exercise of quantifying the energy consumption data assembled through household surveys, either by the recall-based approach or the meter-based approach, remains a challenging task, especially in rural areas of developing countries. In this article, we propose a device-based bottom-up accounting method for estimating household energy consumption. This method provides microlevel disaggregated estimates at the intensive margin and documents other difficult-to-measure energy consumption such as biomass at the extensive margin. Even though measurement errors of the household survey might still exist, the structured questionnaire of daily routine behavior questions should greatly alleviate the problem. The new method supplements the existing household energy statistical system, improves its flexibility, and is particularly applicable in developing countries and/or rural areas. We apply the method to a Chinese rural household survey and discuss its differences and similarities with the conventional methods.

BACKGROUND: To optimise measurement precision, relevance to patients and flexibility, patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) should ideally be adapted to the individual patient/study while retaining direct comparability of scores across patients/studies. This is achievable using item banks and computerised adaptive tests (CATs). The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 (QLQ-C30) is one of the most widely used PROMs in cancer research and clinical practice. Here we provide an overview of the research program to develop CAT versions of the QLQ-C30's 14 functional and symptom domains.METHODS: The EORTC Quality of Life Group's strategy for developing CAT item banks consists of: literature search to identify potential candidate items; formulation of new items compatible with the QLQ-C30 item style; expert evaluations and patient interviews; field-testing and psychometric analyses, including factor analysis, item response theory calibration and simulation of measurement properties. In addition, software for setting up, running and scoring CAT has been developed.RESULTS: Across eight rounds of data collections, 9782 patients were recruited from 12 countries for the field-testing. The four phases of development resulted in a total of 260 unique items across the 14 domains. Each item bank consists of 7-34 items. Psychometric evaluations indicated higher measurement precision and increased statistical power of the CAT measures compared to the QLQ-C30 scales. Using CAT, sample size requirements may be reduced by approximately 20-35% on average without loss of power.CONCLUSIONS: The EORTC CAT Core represents a more precise, powerful and flexible measurement system than the QLQ-C30. It is currently being validated in a large independent, international sample of cancer patients.

Despite the important policy and welfare implications of China's energy issues, to date there has been little investigation from a micro-level perspective of the misallocation of resources in manufacturing enterprises. To fill this gap, this paper deals with resource misallocations in China with special reference to energy and labor inputs. Using a large, novel dataset of manufacturing enterprises from Zhejiang province, we employ a simultaneous system of equations for (gross) industrial output value, wage bill, energy expenditure and carbon emissions. The explanatory variables include labor, educational attainment of employees, capital value, materials, and a list of energy-related variables. Our results show that, for the same energy content, non-coal energy inputs are more productive than coal and coal-related fuels. Non coal energy is more environmentally friendly but more expensive than coal-related fuels. Using the model estimates, we conduct Wald tests on whether the marginal productivity of labor and energy significantly differ from their respective factor costs. The main findings are that there is substantial resource misallocation in manufacturing enterprises, with labor being underpaid and energy overpaid, on average, in comparison to their marginal productivity. For energy misallocation, however, the pattern varies considerably among the various subsectors. Specifically, energy is over-used in sectors such as Textile, Paper, Chemical, Plastics, Non-metallic, Ferrous metals and Non-ferrous metal. By contrast, energy is under-used in sectors such as Beverages, Textile-wearing apparel, Leather, Metal, Transport equipment, Electrical machinery and Communication equipment. These findings can assist decision-makers in targeting the sectors where there is the most misallocation, identifying which inputfactors are inappropriately used, improving economic efficiency and lowering overall production costs by reducing allocative inefficiency.

The aims of the present work are to introduce to the field of communication between the cancer patient and the professionals, to remark the positive influence communication may have on the patient, and to present the EORTC communication questionnaire. Communication between patient and professional is a key element in the support that is offered to cancer patients. It is important to consider different professionals communicate with cancer patients. There is a need of research in communication between patients and professionals. Two main models of patient care are presented: Paternalistic and Patient-Centered Cancer Care. Patient-Centered Care includes Patient- Centered Communication - PCC. The relation between communication and other PROs - Quality of Life, Information and Satisfaction with Care - is presented. There are cross-cultural differences in communication that could be related to the model of patient care. The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Group is developing a questionnaire to assess communication between cancer patient and the professionals. This Communication questionnaire mainly assesses professionals’ behaviors. Cultural aspects have a key role in the development of the EORTC questionnaire. This instrument is based on the Patient- Centered Communication – PCC model. The EORTC QLQ-COMU26 is presented. It includes six scales and four individual items. The three phases of the questionnaire development process are described. At the present moment the EORTC QLQ-COMU26 is being field-tested in a larger international study (phase IV), to ensure it is an appropriate and psychometrically valid instrument., Este trabajo pretende introducir el área de la comunicación entre el paciente oncológico y los profesionales, y destacar el impacto que tiene en el paciente. Chinese input methods are used to convert pinyin sequence or other Latin encoding systems into Chinese character sentences. For more effective pinyin-to-character conversion, typical Input Method Engines (IMEs) rely on a predefined vocabulary that demands manually maintenance on schedule. For the purpose of removing the inconvenient vocabulary setting, this work focuses on automatic wordhood acquisition by fully considering that Chinese inputting is a free human-computer interaction procedure. Instead of strictly defining words, a loose word likelihood is introduced for measuring how likely a character sequence can be a user-recognized word with respect to using IME. Then an online algorithm is proposed to adjust the word likelihood or generate new words by comparing user true choice for inputting and the algorithm prediction. The experimental results show that the proposed solution can agilely adapt to diverse typings and demonstrate performance approaching highly-optimized IME with fixed vocabulary.

A known acoustic flow is generated and input to a physical (hardware) model of a vocal tract at its ’glottis’. The output sound is measured, along with the gain of the tract (the transpedance or transimpedance: the ratio of output pressure to input flow). These allow all stages of the Source–Filter model to be illustrated by actual experimental measurements on the same physical model in the time and frequency domains, rather than by the usual qualitative, illustrative sketches.

PURPOSE: Patient-reported outcomes should ideally be adapted to the individual patient while maintaining comparability of scores across patients. This is achievable using computerized adaptive testing (CAT). The aim here was to develop an item bank for CAT measurement of the pain domain as measured by the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire.METHODS: The development process consisted of four steps: (1) literature search, (2) formulation of new items and expert evaluations, (3) pretesting and (4) field-testing and psychometric analyses for the final selection of items.RESULTS: In step 1, we identified 337 pain items from the literature. Twenty-nine new items fitting the QLQ-C30 item style were formulated in step 2 that were reduced to 26 items by expert evaluations. Based on interviews with 31 patients from Denmark, France and the UK, the list was further reduced to 21 items in step 3. In phase 4, responses were obtained from 1103 cancer patients from five countries. Psychometric evaluations showed that 16 items could be retained in a unidimensional item bank. Evaluations indicated that use of the CAT measure may reduce sample size requirements with 15-25 % compared to using the QLQ-C30 pain scale.CONCLUSIONS: We have established an item bank of 16 items suitable for CAT measurement of pain. While being backward compatible with the QLQ-C30, the new item bank will significantly improve measurement precision of pain. We recommend initiating CAT measurement by screening for pain using the two original QLQ-C30 pain items. The EORTC pain CAT is currently available for "experimental" purposes.

At present, little is known about their health effects in the human lung, particularly in the small airways (< 2 mm in diameter), a key site of airway obstruction and destruction in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other acute and chronic lung conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of e-cigarettes on human distal airway inflammation and remodeling.Methods: We isolated primary small airway epithelial cells from donor lungs without known lung disease. Small airway epithelial cells were cultured at air–liquid interface and exposed to 15 puffs vapor obtained by heating a commercially available e-cigarette solution (e-vapor) with or without nicotine. After 24 hrs of e-vapor exposure, basolateral and apical media as well as cell lysates were collected to measure the pleiotropic cytokine interleukin 6 (IL6) and MUC5AC, one of the major components in mucus.Results: Unlike the nicotine-containing e-vapor, nicotine-free e-vapor significantly increased the amount of IL6, which was coupled with increased levels of intracellular MUC5AC protein. Importantly, a neutralizing IL6 antibody (vs an IgG isotype control) significantly inhibited the production of MUC5AC induced by nicotine-free e-vapor.Conclusion: Our results suggest that human small airway epithelial cells exposed to nicotine-free e-vapor increase the inflammatory response and mucin production, which may contribute to distal lung airflow limitation a

This study aims to establish and internally validate the risk nomogram of constipation in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and to test its predictive ability.Patients and Methods: This retrospective study included 746 patients with T2DM at two medical centers. Among the 746 patients with T2DM, 382 and 163 patients in the Beilun branch of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University were enrolled in the training cohort and the validation cohort, respectively. A total of 201 patients in the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University were enrolled in external validation cohorts. The nomogram was established by optimizing the predictive factors through univariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis. The prediction performance of the nomogram was measured by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC), the calibration curve, and the decision curve analysis (DCA). Cigarette smoke (CS) increases the severity of viral infections, but there is no effective therapy for HRV infection. We determined whether α1-antitrypsin (A1AT) reduces HRV-16 infection in CS-exposed primary human airway epithelial cells. Brushed bronchial epithelial cells from normal subjects and patients diagnosed with COPD were cultured at air–liquid interface to induce mucociliary differentiation. These cells were treated with A1AT or bovine serum albumin for 2 hours and then exposed to air or whole cigarette smoke (WCS) with or without HRV-16 (5×104 50% Tissue Culture Infective Dose [TCID50]/transwell) infection for 24 hours. WCS exposure significantly increased viral load by an average of fivefold and decreased the expression of antiviral genes interferon-λ1, OAS1, and MX1. When A1AT was added to WCS-exposed cells, viral load significantly decreased by an average of 29-fold. HRV-16 infection significantly increased HRV-16 receptor intercellular adhesion molecule-1 messenger RNA expression in air-exposed cells, which was decreased by A1AT. A1AT-mediated reduction of viral load was not accompanied by increased epithelial antiviral gene expression or by inhibiting the activity of 3C protease involved in viral replication or maturation. Our findings demonstrate that A1AT treatment prevents a WCS-induced increase in viral load and for the first time suggest a therapeutic effect of A1AT on HRV infection.
