10. Transormative Agreements: Communicating Next Phase of Library Collections
- Abstract
Open Access journals and scholarship share a new relationship as content has transitioned from a subscription commodity to rights management. As federal governments encourage and increasingly mandate sponsored research outputs be freely and widely available at the time of publication sustainability of such models led to varied ways of how OA could be made viable. Recent practices suggest successes and trials in changing the footprint of collections. Libraries accustomed to acquiring content for perpetual ownership, and those that created institutional repositories to allow authors when they didn’t retain intellectual property could distribute and repurpose their works are but examples of how collections have changed. Some disciplines expanded the preprint culture. Publishers must rethink whether to publish them after peer review. OA contributes to increased diversity as authors in developing countries and in emerging disciplines share their research findings as libraries eagerly seek this material. Disciplinary differences advance and restrict the OA marketplace and business models explore how to communicate to the next generation of authors what the future of scholarly publishing will be. Costs of knowledge creation suggest different models of transformative agreements and positions libraries and their academic affiliates with new options for submission and publication with publishers trying to offer social, economic, and sustainable incentives to maintain a competitive publishing landscape while influencing and responding to author behaviors. Instead of renewing subscriptions, many libraries seek strategies that offer how to demonstrate impact and encourage new business practices. This paper explores how libraries and publishers will communicate this evolution anticipating what changes will likely define library collections in the future. Speculating about what role transformative agreements have in libraries as they rethink the focus of collections is uncertain.

11. The impact of Large Language Models on the publishing sectors : Books, academic journals, newspapers
- Abstract
This paper examines the potential impact of Large Language Models (LLMs) in the press and in the production of books and academic journals. LLMs, such as OpenAI’s GPT-3, are trained on massive text corpora and can predict the next word in a given context through probabilistic methods. They have demonstrated autonomy and versatility in a variety of tasks, including question answering, translation, summarization, text classification, and code generation from natural language instructions. The paper discusses the trends, opportunities, and challenges of artificial intelligence (AI) and LLMs in the publishing industries, as well as the existing research on these topics. It also conducts experiments and operations with GPT-3 to explore its potential benefits and limitations, and offers reflections on the medium- and long-term impact of LLMs in those sectors.

Scholarly communication of all types is changing dramatically with the introduction of electronic technologies. This new environment means that standalone print publishing risks being left behind, and as many STM journals acquired or launched by commercial publishers have been subject to dramatic price rises in the last few years, there has been much talk of ways to by-pass commercial publishers. The scholarly publishing market is fertile ground for innovation and there has been a lack of objective research regarding the UK university press. Despite the many changes that have occurred in the scholarly publishing industry in recent years, university presses in the UK that have not been in the forefront of innovation have remained minor players. The research focused on the university press, it's current situation and it's role in the electronic future. The research included: case studies that were conducted at both UK and USA university presses, along with the corresponding libraries, a questionnaire which was sent to academic authors that had published with both a university press and a commercial publishing house, and both qualitative and quantitative questionnaires sent to all operating UK university press directors. The thesis argues that university presses (in particular the smaller presses), as not for-profit organisations, are in a prime position to increase their power in the scholarly publishing system and can make changes to provide valued services to the Higher Education Community. Findings show that university presses, both in the USA as well as the UK, have faced, and continue to face change. Lack of funding and HEI support continues to make the traditional publishing role of the university presses difficult, and, in many cases, has caused the closure and sale of university presses in the UK. The university press continues to play an important role, and will continue to do so in the near future. However, in order for smaller university presses in the UK to remain sustainable, they must continue to adapt to, and take advantage of, change, recognise the value they add to the scholarly communication system and not rely on others to improve their situation. They cannot remain static in a changing environment. Through the work with university presses three potential business plans are proposed for a UK organisation of university presses, along with two business models to help the presses adapt to the changing environment and continue to play a role that is required by the HEI. Based on the results and conclusions of the research recommendations are made to stakeholders and ideas for further research are identified.

22. Retorik sebagai strategi penulisan buku ilmiah dalam Bahasa Melayu
- Abstract

24. Evaluation and publication delay in Ibero-American scientific journals
- Abstract
This article analyses the review, acceptance and publication dates of a sample of 21,890 articles from 326 Ibero-American scientific journals from all subject areas and countries included in the Latindex Catalogue 2.0 and published between 2018 and 2020 (freely available as an open access dataset). The aim is to discover evaluation and publication times. The evaluation process takes a median of 110 days, the publication process, a median of 82 days, and the whole process, a median of 224 days. Statistical differences are found according to periodicity, subject areas, countries, existence of a printed version and article type (Call for Papers or General articles). From the data we find that the delay in publication is longer than publishers themselves report to the DOAJ. STEM areas present the most similarity in publication patterns, having a higher number of evaluation days (Ed) than publication days (Pd); Arts and Humanities present the opposite pattern, with a higher Pd than Ed. In the case of Social Sciences, the times are similar. General articles and Call for Papers articles differ in terms of Ed, but not Pd, indicating that Call for Papers revisions are faster.

28. Availability and Accessibility of Electronic Information Resources in Academic Libraries as Predictors of Academic Performance of Students
- Abstract
This paper argues for the availability and accessibility of EIRs in academic libraries as predictors of academic performance of students of tertiary institutions. It raises the problem that the growing influx of EIRs has revolutionised academic libraries' operations and led to radical changes in libraries' services by making information available to students in new ways to support scholarly publications and identifies e-journals, e-books, e-theses and dissertations, databases, CDs/VCDs/DVDs, etc., as EIRs that can be made available and accessible to boost students' academic performance. It outlines space economy, ease of access through numerous metadata, search engines, online catalogues (OPAC), and protocols, cost-effectiveness, unhindered access and simultaneous use of EIRs as the benefits of EIRs; while it also discusses poor funding of academic libraries, coat of purchasing electronic gadgets, poor students' searching skills, infrastructure decadence and unreliable power supply as the factors Inhibiting academic libraries from making EIRs available and accessible to students. It recommends among others that academic libraries should be adequately funded by management so that they can be purchasing the necessary electronic gadgets needed for the availability and accessibility of EIRs to students.

34. Indigenisation of Nigerian Librarianship through Indigenous Knowledge: Exploring its Possibilities
- Abstract
Knowledge cannot be separated from the people holding it and the best way to make it appreciated is to present it in a way that represents the beliefs, customs and norms of its origin. This submission makes this paper attempts to find the perfect word between indigenisation and decolonisation as a way of developing Indigenous Librarianship in Nigeria. It settles for indigenisation because indigenisation focuses on the exploitation of the native, local resources to create, share, transform and retain knowledge. It ponders on the historical antecedents of Librarianship in Nigeria to proof that the Nigerian library practices were purely nurtured in the waters of colonialism. It argues that since the practices of Librarianship within any culture are not universal, though they may be normative within that culture, the practices of Indigenous Librarianship can be used for reflecting culturally conditioned notions of the Nigerian IK and its representations through the Nigerian Librarianship. It suggests bibliographic citation and compilation, cataloguing and classification and library automation as areas of Librarianship that can be indigenised. It concludes that libraries thrived in societies where their practices are hinged on IK and recommends that Nigerian librarians should devise a system of describing, codifying and representing local knowledge and its channels of communication in a way that depicts their original contents as against the artificial description and representation imposed on them by the foreign subject organisation and document description schemes.

According to the current study, the main hurdles to IRs in central university libraries of Assam are lack of technical assistance and high-speed internet connection. Why are certain academics allowed to see their work while others are not? What would make it possible for teachers to share their knowledge resources to help knowledge societies thrive? The Open Education Resources (OER) movement promotes the free and open sharing of educational resources. This study monograph demonstrates the positive attitude towards others among higher education instructors in India, which is driven to use the resources and distribute them for altruistic motives.

40. Islamic Scholarly Publishing and a Comparative Analysis of Religious Publications in the National Bibliography of Nigeria
- Abstract
Religious publishing is not strange to the knowledge production community of the human race. However, Islamic publishing has been problematic either in Nigeria or elsewhere in the globe. Literature has shown a slow response to scholarly publishing from the Muslim world generally. This study seeks to evaluate the performance of religious publishing between 2011 and 2018 in Nigeria and the quantum of contributions of Islam to this productivity. The data for the study was obtained from the National Bibliography of Nigeria which aggregates the bibliographic records of publications produced in the country annually. A total of 1,992 entries within the period of 2011-2018 was extracted from the NBN representing the entire publications recorded for religious publications for the period under review. The 1,992 entries were later collated for subsequent interpretation and further analysis using descriptive statistics. The findings show a decrease in the publishing activities of religious organizations and authors of religious books in Nigeria within the period, the extremely low performance of Islamic (Other) Religious Publications, and domination of the scene by CRP. Therefore there is an urgent need for sensitization of potential authors of Islamic books, training for Muslim publishing houses on the technicality of book production.

41. Opening a Communication Channel with the ETD Librarian
- Abstract
This presentation will share the results of a new initiative developed by the ETD Librarian at Florida International University (FIU) to develop a personal connection between students and the ETD Librarian. The goal is threefold; to provide a personal contact and open communication channel within the library to whom students can address publishing best practices and concerns with, to better inform and engage students in the metadata process of submitting theses and dissertations, and to spur the growth of knowledge and usage of ORCID. A previous initiative that added an ORCID and a license option to the metadata fields had resulted in a growth in licensing usage but the use of ORCID continued to remain flat at approximately 30%.A study was conducted to determine whether students understood when and why to use the ORCID and embargo options and the results showed that students did not understand the usefulness of these tools. At FIU, the ETD submission process is split into two parts with the graduate school coordinator being the main contact with students and the ETD Librarian doing the publishing in the institutional repository. Our ETD Coordinator offers workshops to help guide the students through this process, however, students have previously had no contact with the ETD Librarian. This novel approach aims to change that.

46. Editing the Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies as a Hub of Publishing in a Local Academic Community

- Abstract
Journals circulate the life blood of academic publishing: authors need editors to help them present their work in its finest form, while readers need editors to deliver the most welcome reading, and editors need both authors and readers for their journals to thrive. Michael Cornett reflects on his career at the center of this symbiotic relationship as managing editor of the Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies. The institutional stability afforded by Duke University Press as the publisher of JMEMS and Duke University’s Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies as the campus home for the journal has allowed Cornett to develop an active hub of publishing that integrates the journal within a local academic community, while maintaining the public-facing connection to the wider world of publishing. Editing at its best is collaborative, community-based, knowledge-building work.

47. The Rise of the Guest Editor—Discontinuities of Editorship in Scholarly Publishing
- Abstract
Scholarly publishing lives on traditioned terminology that gives meaning to subjects such as authors, inhouse editors and external guest editors, artifacts such as articles, journals, special issues, and collected editions, or practices of acquisition, selection, and review. These subjects, artifacts, and practices ground the constitution of scholarly discourse. And yet, the meaning ascribed to each of these terms shifts, blurs, or is disguised as publishing culture shifts, which becomes manifest in new digital publishing technology, new forms of publishing management, and new forms of scholarly knowledge production. As a result, we may come to over- or underestimate changes in scholarly communication based on traditioned but shifting terminology. In this article, we discuss instances of scholarly publishing whose meaning shifted. We showcase the cultural shift that becomes manifest in the new, prolific guest editor. Though the term suggests an established subject, this editorial role crystallizes a new cultural setting of loosened discourse communities and temporal structures, a blurring of publishing genres and, ultimately, the foundations of academic knowledge production., Peer Reviewed

48. Academic writing and publishing beyond documents
- Abstract
Research on writing tools stopped in the late 1980s when Microsoft Word had achieved monopoly status. However, the development of the Web and the advent of mobile devices are increasingly rendering static print-like documents obsolete. In this vision paper we reflect on the impact of this development on scholarly writing and publishing. Academic publications increasingly include dynamic elements, e.g., code, data plots, and other visualizations, which clearly requires other tools for document production than traditional word processors. When the printed page no longer is the desired final product, content and form can be addressed explicitly and separately, thus emphasizing the structure of texts rather than the structure of documents. The resulting challenges have not yet been fully addressed by document engineering.

49. The end of methodological nationalism : the internationalization of historical research in Sweden since 2000
- Abstract
Based on quantitative and qualitative data and analyses, this article highlights how research in the discipline of history in Sweden has been affected by imperatives of internationalization in recent decades. Four central dimensions of the internationalization of research are discussed in some depth, based on empirically observable changes in the discipline since 2000: (i) geographical areas of research, (ii) international publications, (iii) international researcher mobility, and (iv) international research funding. It is concluded that for the first two dimensions there has been a significant shift towards more internationalization of research in the Swedish discipline of history since 2000, and particularly since 2010, but for the latter two, internationalization is less prominent, even though the opportunities for international mobility and securing international research funding have increased significantly since 2000. The article also highlights some controversies and debates pertaining to the internationalization of historical research in Sweden and the other Nordic countries. It is concluded that Swedish historians have come a long way in overcoming the methodological nationalism that characterized the discipline for most of the twentieth century, and that they now participate more than ever before on the international frontlines of historical research.

50. Big Scholarly Data im Open Access Monitor: ein Werkstattbericht
- Abstract
In the light of the Open Access transformation, the analysis of large amounts of data is increasingly important for libraries, whereas the number of scholarly publications is constantly growing. Large amounts of data must first be made usable before any substantiated analysis can be made, e.g. regarding institution-related publication outputs. This is where the Open Access Monitor (OAM) comes in, which acts as an interface for merging data from various source systems such as Unpaywall, Dimensions, Web of Science and Scopus. For this purpose, the OAM is structurally divided into three parts: the backend hosts the data, which can be queried via the API, and is presented and visualized in the frontend. All data, coming from various source systems, must be homogenized in order to realize complete data sets without creating duplicates. Journal titles or institution names have to be standardized to allow assigning the original entries from the source systems to the corresponding data records in the OAM. In the case of institution names, these are enriched with persistent identifiers. Given the way the data is organized in some of the source databases, the institution names cannot be mapped directly to organization identifiers (ROR-IDs) in some cases. Therefore, the raw forms of the author’s affiliation information are used in the mapping process. Affiliation mapping is an extensive and complex task, since the data provided are often ambiguous and at the same time a clear distinction of institutions, especially in the case of university hospitals, requires intellectual processing. The highly complex process of generating a uniform data set from a multitude of data sources will be demonstrated, with a special focus on the normalization processes as well as the assignment of Open Access categories. Metadata quality remains a constant challenge, as does the issue of availability and sustainability of the connected source systems. The use and integration of open data sources i, Peer Reviewed
