- Abstract
The music of Pulitzer Prize-winner Julia Wolfe has been performed worldwide by premier ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the New World Symphony, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the Kronos Quartet. In 2018 a consortium of 22 universities, the Big Ten Band Directors Association, and “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band commissioned Dr. Wolfe to write an original work for wind band. Dr. Wolfe completed her composition in the fall of 2021 and titled it Zigzag. The world premiere on November 17, 2021, was prepared and performed by the Ohio State University Wind Symphony conducted by Dr. Russel Mikkelson with the composer in attendance. The purpose of this project is to illuminate the process through which Dr. Wolfe was commissioned to write Zigzag, to provide the first formal analysis of the work, and to offer performance considerations. This document may be employed by conductors of professional and academic ensembles for the purpose of preparing this work for performance.
