The primary purpose of this project was to engender godliness through doctrinal expository preaching on the attributes of God. The most significant human endeavor is the pursuit of the knowledge of God - not just the intellectual knowledge pertaining to the details about Him, but the personal knowledge of His nature and how we must relate to Him. Whatever we mentally conceive about God determines everything about us. Our purpose, our hope, and our eternal destination are inextricably tied to the One who created us. Since it is impossible to love what we do not know, an accurate understanding of God is imperative to living a reverent and acceptable life that is pleasing to the Lord. By learning about the theological nature of God as presented in Scripture, the intention of this project was to develop a godly mindset aimed toward reverent devotion and conduct appropriate to His glory. Godliness begins with the knowledge of God. An accurate view of God was a primary ambition of this doctrinal preaching project. The sermon series consisted often messages on the attributes of God preached in the Sunday morning worship services of Immanuel Bible Church in Santa Monica, California in the Fall of 2010. Each theological message was preached within the context of a specific portion of Scripture. The messages were doctrinally focused on ten particular attributes of God. But instead of a topical approach to the theological material, the messages retained an expository emphasis by developing each attribute within the exposition of a particular passage in which the attribute was addressed. The aim was to teach each attribute within the context of its scriptural presentation to develop appropriate application for godly thinking and living. A theological summary of each of the ten attributes addressed in this project is presented in the first chapter. Godliness is a function of informed reverence producing appropriate action. The knowledge of God in Scripture is not intended to be theoretical, but intensely practical. Knowing God should result in God-ward devotion, which in turn should produce Godhonoring conduct. Because the general challenge of Biblical exposition is communicating the original meaning of the text as well as its contemporary significance, considerable attention was given to the task of relevant application. And since the specific challenge of doctrinal exposition in this project was communicating the knowledge of God and its significance for godliness, particular emphasis was placed on the goal of godly devotion and conduct. The relevance of application generally and the goal of godliness specifically was discussed in the second chapter. In an effort to evaluate changing attitudes affecting godliness, surveys were conducted before, during and after the sermon series. Changes in responses to the same survey questions over the course ofthe preaching project provided a basis for analyzing shifting attitudes toward theology, life, and preaching. The data suggests that the result of this doctrinal preaching project was a moderate shift toward increasingly God-centered attitudes influencing worship and life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
