Problem Not much attention has been devoted to the academic experiences of Black African college students, the latter being typically categorized with those of African Americans (Kim, 2014). While research has effectively documented the social challenges that African American college students experience at (Predominantly White Institutions (PWI). much less research has been conducted on the social experiences of subcategories within the Black population, specifically, Black Africans. Though researchers have speculated on the potential differences between the social integration experiences of Black Africans and African American college students as these relate to religious orientation and racial identity attitude, no empirical studies exist on the proposed connection. Method The sample for this study consisted of 174 African American and 170 Black African college students attending PWIs within the U.S. Participants completed the BRIAS, I/E-R and IIS to provide input on one’s racial identity attitude, religious orientation, and peer-group interactions. Structural equation modeling was used to evaluate the joint and independent impact of racial identity attitude and religious orientation on the social integration experiences of Black African and African American college students attending PWIs . Results The initial research design was a poor fit for the data, so it was revised on the basis of theory and modification indices. The research design for the collective sample, the Black African sample, and the African American sample respectively resulted in similar fit indices and path relationships. All three models illustrated a weak direct effect between religious orientation and social integration. Also, all three designs illustrated a moderate direct relationship between racial identity attitude and social integration. Conclusion It can be contended that within the college milieu the status of one’s racial identity attitude has the potential to influence interpersonal relationships with peers in the boarder social context (Sanchez & Gilbert, 2016). The results also illustrate similarities in racial scores between groups. Lastly, it should be noted that in spite of the comparable racial identity scores, in this study Black African college students have distinctive cultural contexts and identities that have been retained and resulted in much less assimilation to mainstream social norms of the US society (Portes & Fernandez-Kelly, 2008). These distinctive identities should not be discounted since they may have a significant impact on individual and social functioning within the academic setting.

Understanding the development of plants grown within space craft in the microgravity of orbit is a critical step in developing successful crop plant systems from the bioregenerative life support systems that will be critical for maintaining human life during long-duration spaceflight missions. In this study, we analyzed wild-type seedlings grown in BRIC hardware during Space Shuttle Mission STS-131 (BRIC-16). We collected and analyzed data on germination rates, gross morphology, anatomical features, subcellular structure, and the transcriptome of seedlings in microgravity. We compared the results of our transcriptome with those wild-type seedlings from investigative teams that used the same spaceflight hardware during the STS-131 mission. We determined that germination rates were high and noted a unidirectional skewing of roots and shoots grown in microgravity. We also noted that amyloplasts were present in the endodermal layer of the meristematic region of the shoot and within the petioles of the leaves. A statistically significant roundness was observed in the cells of the endodermis of spaceflight-grown petioles, suggesting an effect on the cell wall. In addition, genes involved in cytoskeleton rearrangement were up-regulated in the transcriptome of spaceflight-grown shoots. In a comparison of the transcriptomes collected from the seedlings of all investigative groups from the BRIC-16 space project, genes involved in cell wall development and stress response were consistently differentially regulated. In conclusion, spaceflight has several significant effects on the morphology and gene expression profiles of plants grown in microgravity.

The objects discovered in Tomb 79 at the necropolis of Salamis, Cyprus have garnered much attention since their discovery. The material from this tomb, however, needs an in-depth, object-by-object analysis that will lead to a greater understanding of the burial as a whole. In my thesis, I offer a detailed case study of a single item, an ivory-covered wooden chair—so-called Throne Γ—as exemplifying an approach to this analysis. Based on the excavation team’s exacting reconstruction, the chair is four-legged with armrests and a slightly curved backrest. Ivory overlays the entirety of the chair except on a few sections of the backrest where the wood shows through. Here as well, both figural and geometric designs decorate the ivory, and the top bar was originally overlaid with gold. As a whole, Throne Γ would have appeared as a solid ivory object, embellished with wood and gold, and was likely draped with textiles. In this study, I analyze Throne Γ as an agent of identity. To do so, I follow the example of other scholars such as Irene Winter and Marian Feldman and employ the theory of object agency, addressing Throne Γ as an affective entity. When placed in a social context—i.e., when involved in human interaction—such agentive objects actively influence their surroundings. In this case, I analyze how Throne Γ affected the individual in whose tomb it was buried. I argue that through its various affective “mechanisms”—its nature as a luxury object, the value of its ivory material, its sensory qualities (including luminosity, texture, and fragrance), its iconography, and its ritual function—Throne Γ projected a king-like identity upon the deceased individual from Tomb 79. His actual political and social power during his lifetime, however, may have been less than that suggested by the mechanisms of the chair. The inclusion of Throne Γ in the burial was therefore a conscious choice and the identity the chair projected deliberate. It was meant to agentively mark, and thus legitimize, the deceased as a politically-able, diplomatically-savvy, and divinely-touched figure in the early days of monarchy on Cyprus.
