1. Mixed-Methods Study on Academic Experience and Resilience of Postsecondary Education Voucher Recipients

- Abstract
The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to explore the academic experiences and resilience of postsecondary education foster youth, who received the McKinney-Vento voucher, in terms of their experienced barriers and successful practices in academic engagement, and their academic outcomes experienced during enrollment in postsecondary institutions of higher learning in southeast Texas. This study addressed the construct of resilience and recommended various best practices and future implications for the participants in relation to social justice. The central research question addressed the academic education experience and resilience of postsecondary education voucher recipients, in terms of their challenges, obstacles, successful engagement strategies, and recommendation for better support services. This mixed-methods exploratory design used the CD-RISC-10 scale, which investigated the academic achievement, academic experience, and resilience of education voucher recipients. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected and analyzed in response to open-ended and closed-ended questions. 61% of foster care voucher recipients, who participated in the study, had exceptional resiliency. Because of their high resiliency, foster care voucher recipients do have the ability to bounce back, despite having difficult obstacles and adversities experienced, in terms of their pursuit of academic success and academic achievement. Institutions of higher learning are recommended to provide the following support services: childcare, assistance with their finances, assistance with housing, student support services, employment opportunities, mental health support, more funding sources, and more online classes.
