Aluminum-26 (Al-26) is a radioactive isotope produced in massive star processes. High-resolution spectroscopy of its 1.809 MeV gamma-ray (γ-ray) decay signature constrains the dynamics of its emission as it is ejected from its progenitor sites and incorporated into the interstellar medium of the Milky Way Galaxy. Imaging reveals dominant emission in the Inner Galaxy and emission in localized regions of massive star activity. Taken together, spectroscopy and imaging of Al-26 shed light on the chemical evolution of the Galaxy over millions of years. The Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI) is a compact Compton telescope designed to measure astrophysical γ-rays of energy 0.2–5 MeV. Its high-purity germanium detectors track incident photons as they Compton scatter throughout the detector volume. In 2016, COSI flew on a NASA ultra-long duration balloon for 46 days. This dissertation details the first analysis of Al-26 in the flight data and reports a measurement of 3.7σ significance above background and an Inner Galaxy flux of (8.6 ± 2.5) × 10−4 ph cm−2 s−1. All scientific achievements from the flight are predicated on calibrations performed before launch. These calibration procedures were repeated in advance of an intended 2020 balloon flight. Analyzing calibration data validates instrument performance and informs studies of detector effects, including charge sharing and charge trapping, that complicate the measurement process.The next generation of COSI as a NASA Small Explorer satellite is slated for launch in 2027. It is anticipated to strengthen the spectroscopic measurement of Al-26 in the balloon flight and yield the most detailed images of Al-26 to date. Extensive testing of the imaging algorithm in COSI’s new analysis toolkit is presented as a first step towards producing these images. The desired culmination of these efforts is an enhanced understanding of Galactic Al-26 by way of thorough calibrations, novel insight into undesirable detector effects, and advanced analyses of high-resolution data from the COSI balloon and satellite instruments.

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) experiment is designed to directly detect elastic scatters of weakly-interacting massive dark matter particles (WIMPs), on target nuclei in semiconductor crystals composed of Si and Ge. These scatters would occur very rarely, in an overwhelming background composed primarily of electron recoils from photons and electrons, as well as a smaller but non-negligible background of WIMP-like nuclear recoils from neutrons. The CDMS~II generation of detectors simultaneously measure ionization and athermal phonon signals from each scatter, allowing discrimination against virtually all electron recoils in the detector bulk. Pulse-shape timing analysis allows discrimination against nearly all remaining electron recoils taking place near detector surfaces. Along with carefully limited neutron backgrounds, this experimental program allowed for ``background-free'' operation of CDMS~II at Soudan, with less than one background event expected in each WIMP-search analysis. As a result, exclusionary upper-limits on WIMP-nucleon interaction cross section were placed over a wide range of candidate WIMP masses, ruling out large new regions of parameter space.These results, like any others, are subject to a variety of systematic effects that may alter their final interpretations. A primary focus of this dissertation will be difficulties in precisely calibrating the energy scale for nuclear recoil events like those from WIMPs.Nuclear recoils have suppressed ionization signals relative to electron recoils of the same recoil energy, so the response of the detectors is calibrated differently for each recoil type. The overall normalization and linearity of the energy scale for electron recoils in CDMS~II detectors is clearly established by peaks of known gamma energy in the ionization spectrum of calibration data from a $^{133}$Ba source. This electron-equivalent (keV$_mathrm{ee}$) energy scale enables calibration of the total phonon signal (keV$_mathrm{t}$) by enforcing unity yield for electron recoils, in aggregate. Subtracting an event's Luke phonon contribution from its calibrated total phonon energy (keV$_mathrm{t}$), as measured by the ionization signal, results in a valid measure of the true recoil energy (keV$_mathrm{r}$) for both electron and nuclear recoils.I discuss systematic uncertainties affecting the reconstruction of this recoil energy, the primary analysis variable, and use several methods to constrain their magnitude. I present the resulting adjusted WIMP limits and discuss their impact in the context of current and projected constraints on the parameter space for WIMP interactions.

The E and B Experiment (EBEX) is a balloon-borne telescope designed to measure the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and dust foregrounds at 10' scales and three frequency bands of 150 GHz, 250 GHz, and 410 GHz in order to detect or constrain B-mode polarization. Results may provide evidence to support the theory of cosmological inflation, or constrain specific models.EBEX's polarization measurement capability is implemented via continuously-rotating Half-Wave Plate (HWP) polarimetry. We discuss the design and implementation of the polarimetry hardware for the E and B Experiment (EBEX). In order to achieve low-temperature rotation of our 15 cm, 635 g achromatic HWP stack, we implement a unique application of a Superconducting Magnetic Bearing (SMB), building off an earlier prototype. We discuss design constraints, detail our implementation, and present results of tests of power dissipation, rotation speed stability, dynamic stability, and operational lifetime. We find power dissipation of 15 mW in our LDB configuration, and achieve successful operation of the system in both a 2009 test flight and a 2012 Long Duration (LDB) flight.We design and carry out calibration tests to verify our ability to measure polarized signals. We develop a data analysis pipeline to extract polarization measurements from the chopped polarized signals we use in calibration; we verify and optimize the performance of this pipeline with a simulation. We find that a thorough understanding of the time constants of EBEX's bolometric sensors is essential to measure polarization. We develop methods to measure and remove the effects of these time constants. Tests of polarization rotation across our bands verify predictions of rotation due to our achromatic HWP 5-stack. Polarized beam scans allow us to set an absolute calibration for EBEX with a standard deviation of 1.5 degrees.

I discuss the design, construction, and calibration of the E \& B EXperiment (EBEX), a balloon-borne telescope designed to measure the B-mode polarization anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). EBEX observes the sky with 8 arcmin resolution in three frequency bands centered on 150, 250, and 410 GHz, with over 1,500 detectors. Polarimetry is performed through use of a continuously rotating achromatic half-wave plate with fixed wire-grid polarizer. The experiment was designed to detect the gravitational-lensed B-mode signal and detect or set an upper limit for the inflationary B-mode signal. In this thesis, I describe the design and structure of various subsystems of the EBEX receiver and predict their experimental performance. Several calibrating instrumental response experiments are described and the results reported and compared to predictions. A brief review of the 2012-2013 long duration balloon (LDB) flight from McMurdo Station, Antarctica, is provided and a summary of the receiver performance during flight characterized.

ISO standard 4037 specifies that for calibrating protection level dosimeters, scattered radiation should contribute less than 5 percent of the exposure. In previous work, we reported the results of an MCNP analysis of the shadow shield technique that was performed for a calibration range with a Cs-137 irradiator. This thesis examines the energy distribution of the photons contributing to the exposure percent scatter (S%) and the detailed origin of the scatter that originates in the irradiator. In summary, it reports that: 1) the majority of S% is due to photons with energies that are significantly below the source energy, 2) a significant percentage of S% is due to photons that scatter within the source and source capsule walls, and 3) S% due to scatter within the irradiator is even more significant than we previously reported.

The question of how exactly the universe began is the motivation for this work. Based on the discoveries of the cosmic expansion and of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, humans have learned of the Big Bang origin of the universe. However, what exactly happened in the first moments of the Big Bang? A scenario of initial exponential expansion called "inflation" was proposed in the 1980s, explaining several important mysteries about the universe. Inflation would have generated gravitational waves that would have left a unique imprint in the polarization of the CMB. To search for this evidence for inflation, a team gathered in 2002 to design a telescope experiment called BICEP. Sited at the South Pole, BICEP was a novel 25-cm aperture refractor with 49 pairs of polarization-sensitive bolometers. We completed 3 years of successful observations from February 2006 to December 2008. To constrain the amplitude of polarization resulting from inflation, expected to be at least 7 orders of magnitude fainter than the 3 K CMB intensity, precise control of systematic effects is essential. A crucial challenge is preventing systematic errors from introducing false polarization anisotropy signal at the level corresponding to ~0.1 μK in amplitude. One main focus of this thesis is the characterization of systematic effects for BICEP. We developed a simulation framework for propagating instrumental systematic effects to the final polarization results. Based on these simulations, we established benchmarks for the characterization of critical instrumental properties including bolometer relative gains, beam mismatch, polarization orientation, telescope pointing, sidelobes, thermal stability, and timestream noise model. Guided by these benchmarks, we carefully measured these properties and have shown that we have characterized the instrument adequately to ensure that systematic errors do not limit BICEP's current cosmology results. We have analyzed the first 2 years of data, lowering the upper limits on the gravitational-wave induced polarization by an order of magnitude over all previous experiments. The systematic error analysis has identified what future refinements are likely necessary to probe CMB polarization down to levels corresponding to inflationary energy scales below 2 × 1016 GeV.
