This paper proposes a control approach which extends the capabilities of large scale commercial electrolysers (>1MW) to support power system stability. The search for new sources of ancillary services and the projected demand for hydrogen as a medium of energy storage has aroused considerable interest in the use of large scale electrolysers for power system ancillary services. In order to fully leverage the potential of large scale electrolysers to support power system stability, effective control schemes are needed. To illustrate the feasibility of the proposed approach, case studies are built on a model of a 1 MW plant augmented with a high level controller. Simulations are performed using the Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) platform, to investigate the response of the high level control scheme to external command signals and power system disturbances. The results show that the proposed control scheme can enable an optimal operation of the electrolyser load on the basis of market and power system conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper provides a review on emerging developments and challenges for provision of ancillary services by means of distributed generation, electrical and non-electrical demand side response and storage in the context of multi-energy conversion systems. To illustrate the value of demand side response as part of multi-energy sector coupling, a case study is built upon a three-area system, which includes conventional and renewable power plants as well as power to gas conversion system with electrolysers. Computer based simulations are performed by using PowerFactory platform to investigate the impact of the response of the electrolysers on power system operation. The results show that positive impacts on steady state and dynamic performances can be achieved by contributing to reduce the system stress. The extent of the contribution depends on the location, activation time, rating, and size of demand side associated to the electrolyser. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Europe, the North Sea has the best potential for large-scale development of offshore wind. This paper describes a compelling view on a future North Sea Infrastructure. The proposed North Sea Infrastructure is based on the development of multi-national offshore interconnectors in combination with an island in shallow waters.
