Major improvements in terms of performance parameters have been achieved since the inception of the first prototype OPI (Optical Phase Interrogator) technology demonstrator. In this work some of these achievements are highlighted. The combination of optimized signal processing and optical fiber sensor implementation allows measurement sensitivities of below 1microstrain (με). (One microstrain correlates to a length change of 1μm per meter.) The typical optical power budget of the current hardware allows for the deployment of approximately 60 meters of polymer optical fiber. Plastic optical fibre sensing of active cracks in a concrete tunnel is presented in this work. The characteristics features of plastic optical fibres in sensing applications, such as large deformation range, ruggedness and easiness of handling are exploited to enable an optical fibre sensing system for long-term crack monitoring, with the aim of assessing the deterioration of the structure. The strain exerted on the fibre is interrogated by means of a low cost commercially available interrogator capable of measuring the cumulated deformation induced on the plastic optical fibre by the crack opening. Nowadays, the applications of Plastic Optical Fibers (POFs) keep increasing in most industries. The usage of this type of fiber is essential in some sensor designs such as POF elongation sensors, which requires the correct interpretation of values received. This article shows the results obtained with POF under vibration and fatigue loads in cyclical tests at different temperatures. The fiber proved to be a very consistent sensor transducer, able to withstand the aging due to vibration, fatigue and temperature loads, which yields good results for structural-survey measurements. This paper presents key developments that enable AVAGO Technologies to be ready for future demand in automotive, industrial and consumer applications. Today the development of MOST 150 transmitter and receiver as well as the new transceiver package technologies for Fast Ethernet will build the basis for future products. Research into future technologies such as direct modulated 3.4 Gbit/s over 10m POF, multilevel coding of 1GBit/s over 50m POF as well as POF sensor applications provide a great platform to grow the POF market in the future.
