Piezoelectric energy harvester system has fascinated rigorous consideration in the area of self powered wireless sensor networks. A complete piezoelectric energy harvesting system constitutes three basic components namely, piezoelectric device, interfacing circuits and storage element. In this paper, a simulation study has been carried out on coupled modeling between piezoelectric device and other interfacing circuits. It has been observed that approximately 99 μW, 83 μW and 30 μW maximum power across 100kΩ optimum load resistance has been obtained from P-SSHI, S-SSHI and SECE interfacing circuits, respectively. Therefore, it can be stated that coupled modeling with self powered P-SSHI circuit performed better as compared to S-SSHI and SECE circuits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Advancing the Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Next Generation Nuclear Power Plants requires enhancing our basic understanding of fuel and materials behavior under irradiation. The two most significant issues limiting the effectiveness and lifespan of the fuel are the loss of thermal conductivity of the fuel and the mechanical strength of both fuel and cladding. The core of a nuclear reactor presents an extremely harsh and challenging environment for both sensors and telemetry due to elevated temperatures and large fluxes of energetic and ionizing particles from radioactive decay processes. The majority of measurements are made in reactors using "radiation hardened" sensors and materials. A different approach has been pursued in this research that exploits high temperatures and materials that are robust with respect to ionizing radiation. This synergistically designed thermoacoustic sensor will be self-powered, wireless, and provide telemetry. The novel sensor will be able to provide reactor process information even if external electrical power and communication are unavailable. In addition, the form-factor for the sensor is identical to the existing fuel rods within reactors and contains no moving parts. Results from initial proof of concept experiments designed to characterize porosity, surface properties and monitor gas composition will be discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Energy balance and power balance are considered in battery-free sensor module. Analysis is given on various application places of self-powered sensor. A simple formula was given to evaluate average current in self-powered sensor module. Energy balance of weekend was discussed for lighting system in office building based on energy store super-capacitor. Function of battery free wireless sensor module was described based on ambient energy harvesting principles. The new battery-free wireless sensor module was applied in lighting system of modern building automation for energy saving. Much has been written about the benefits of wireless sensors which enable measurements in harsh or hermetic environments. However, the problem concerning battery replacement is still open. This paper presents a new solution for a wireless self-powered sensors network, which allows the harvesting of energy from the action of a turbine wheel rotating in the path of a fluid stream environment. This new family of devices can find application in water/gas smart metering systems, subject of very large interest today.
