During the last decade globalization and Europeanization have become key concepts in analyzing economic, political, and cultural processes not only in Europe but worldwide. Are the globalization and Europeanization recent phenomena (1980-2000s)? Or do the concepts and the related debate tend to overshadow that globalization/internationalization and Europeanization always have been central to the development and constitution of one of the small European states? By situating Denmark in a historical context the paper demonstrates how globalization (or more precisely internationalisation) and Europeanisation have been fundamental conditions of existence for the Danish state and society at least for the last two hundred years. However, the nature and character of Europeanisation and internationalisation has changed over this period of time. Europeanisation and internationalisation are variable processes, not constants. A central claim is that the development, consolidation and transformation of the Danish welfare state must be seen in the light of these processes. It is crucial to understand how Denmark has adapted and responded to the international and European environment. Therefore these processes of internationalisation and Europeanisation are also of crucial importance if we want to study the rise and development of the Danish welfare state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
