Abstract

In this paper, we report recent progress in high-energy X-ray focusing by using Kirkpatrick-Baez (K-B) mirrors in combination with a sagittally bent Laue monochromator. This combination of optics provides a high flux X-ray beam, which can significantly reduce the data acquisition time for high-pressure pair distribution function (HP-PDF) measurements using the diamond anvil cell (DAC). Demonstration of the HP-PDF technique for the compression/relaxation of nanocrystalline platinum at high pressures is presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this paper, we report recent development of the high-pressure pair distribution function (HP-PDF) measurement technique using a focused high-energy X-ray beam coupled with a diamond anvil cell (DAC). The focusing optics consist of a sagittally bent Laue monochromator and Kirkpatrick-Baez (K-B) mirrors. This combination provides a clean high-energy X-ray beam suitable for HP-PDF research. Abstract

The SPPS and LCLS are next-generation light sources which will produce ultra-short x-ray pulses a few 10’s of femtoseconds long, with large numbers of photons per pulse. These sources will enable new types of x-ray experiments, but will require new approaches to optical instruments. We present here a spectrograph tailored for use with such sources, allowing the small beam cross-section to be spatially dispersed by means of a curved asymmetric Brag reflecting crystal. The design allows for an adjustable energy range by changing the radius of curvature within certain limits. Although inspired by these new sources, the device is also well adapted to conventional synchrotron radiation beamlines. It is significantly more compact than conventional wavelength-dispersive devices, and has resolution advantages. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
