An interlaboratory designed experiment was conducted to determine the effects of FFT foam application process variables on the face-to-back uniformity and physical properties of wash-wear resin-treated cotton fabric. When a single applicator nozzle was employed, the face-to-back uniformity of applied resin, judged after direct dye staining of the treated fabric, was found to be governed principally by the foam wet pickup. Substantial under-treatment of the side opposite the applicator was observed over the range studied (14 to 22 per cent wet pickup). Wrinkle recovery values showed only slight dependence on wet pickup. When resin applications were made using the tandem nozzle version of the FFT process, excellent front-to-back resin uniformity was observed and high wrinkle recovery values were maintained over the same range of wet pickups. The two-nozzle FFT applicator system thus extends the lower limit of uniform wet pickup for cotton fabric to levels well below the water of imbibition of cotton. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
