The world faces wicked inequalities in global digital access, with nearly half of the world population (3,6 billion people) outside the connected world. The digital public goods (DPG) agenda envisions the rapid scaling and reach of information systems which can be easily implemented in a range of new contexts, to solve problems facing the most vulnerable in society. However, there is limited empirical data and theoretical knowledge to support how DPGs may facilitate or inhibit development outcomes. This panel will challenge ECIS attendees by bringing practitioners and academics together to address urgent questions about DPGs for sustainable development and showcase potential solutions toward sustainable digital futures for all. With countries introducing new forms of computer-mediated means of collecting citizen data (such as biometrics and bllod samples) through a process referred to as “digital identification”, this shapes the construction of digital identity. Digital identity becomes an important lens to understand citizen attitudes and behaviour towards their acceptance or not of state enabled initiatives of surveillance (such as through contact tracing) and vaccination uptake. Analysing theoretically the linkages between processes of digital identification, identity construction, citizens’ behaviour and attitudes towards e-governance initiatives, represents an important research priority, particularly of understanding these processes from the perspective of citizens. This will help to reduce the current research bias of analysing supply side and technology focused dynamics of e-governance initiatives, such as the delivery of internet and mobile phones. This social perspective of the research responds to the World Health Organization (WHO) call in the recently published “A coordinated global research roadmaps: 2019 Novel Coronavirus”, which details guidelines to conduct ethical and socially inclusive research sensitive to the social context, particularly the needs of marginalized populations. Thereby, we focus on discussing technical design and implementation, and their implications on understanding the socio-political circumstances that shape the decisions of citizens, within the larger ecosystem of health care services and information systems. Over the past decade, research on IS solutions for environmental sustainability evolved and produced a modest but firm body of knowledge. Despite this progressive understanding about ICT's solution potential for environmental sustainability, our research practices seem widely unaffected by these insights. Most of us travel by air for work several times a year, to conferences, research stays, or guest lectures. Our community meetings do not seem well aligned with ecological goals. We research and apply technologies, such as blockchain or artificial intelligence, without sufficiently acknowledging the enormous amounts of energy they consume. It raises the fundamental question: Do we practice what we preach? While recognizing the good intentions IS research pursues, should we no longer ignore the environmental 'elephant in the room'? In this inclusive panel discussion, we openly debate these issues. Thereby, we intend to capture the status-quo of the sustainability of our research practices and develop recommendations on how to improve it and ways of measuring the carbon footprint of some key activities.
