The paper concerns the verification of an implementation of a binary fluid solidification model, based on the volume averaging of the phases in the framework of the Star-CD code. In this work an analytical solution of the heat diffusion equation for a binary fluid is employed for verification of the numerical procedure. Moreover, the influence of the assumption about existence of an equilibrium temperature in a mushy zone is discussed. Afterwards the binary fluid solidification, mixture model is used to perform a numerical study of the Al-4.1%Si alloy solidification in a two-dimensional rectangular cavity showing importance of coupling between the binary fluid model and the energy equation.
