We summarize here the main highlights of the AGILE astrophysics mission. The satellite, launched in April 2007, is devoted to γ-ray observations in the 30 MeV–30 GeV energy range, with simultaneous hard X-ray imaging in the 18–60 keV band, and optimal timing capabilities for the study of transient phenomena. The very large field of view (2.5 sr) of the gamma-ray imager coupled with the hard X-ray monitoring capability makes AGILE well suited to study Galactic and extragalactic sources, as well as GRBs and other fast transients. AGILE reaches its optimal performance near 100 MeV with good imaging and sensitivity. Gamma-ray and hard X-ray sources can be monitored 14 times a day, and an extensive database has been obtained for a variety of sources. We summarize here the breakthroughs and most important results obtained for several sources including microquasars and other Galactic compact objects (most notably, the discovery of gamma-ray emission above 100 MeV from Cygnus X-3), Supernova Remnants and pulsar wind nebulae, gamma-ray pulsars, a bright class of blazars (3C 454.3, TXS 0716+714, HB 1510-089, Mrk 421), short and long GRBs (including the remarkable short burst GRB 090510), and terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs). AGILE is a small gamma-ray astronomy satellite mission of the Italian Space Agency dedicated to high-energy astrophysics launched in 2007 April. It provides large sky exposure levels (>=10
9 cm2 s per year on the Galactic Plane) with sensitivity peaking at E∼400 MeV (and simultaneous X-ray monitoring in the 18–60 keV band) where the bulk of pulsar energy output is typically released. Its ∼1 μs is absolute time tagging capability makes it perfectly suited for the study of gamma-ray pulsars following up on the CGRO/EGRET heritage. In this paper we summarize the timing results obtained during the first year of AGILE observations of the known gamma-ray pulsars Vela, Crab, Geminga and B 1706-4. AGILE collected a large number of gamma-ray photons from EGRET pulsars (∼10,000 pulsed counts for Vela) in only few months of observations unveiling new interesting features at sub-millisecond level in the pulsars’ high-energy light-curves and paving the way to the discovery of new gamma-ray pulsars. We study several properties of blazars detected in the gamma-ray energy range by comparing the EGRET sources with a sample of radio blazars which can be considered possible gamma-ray candidates. We define three classes: non-gamma-ray blazars, blazars with quasi-steady gamma-ray emission, and gamma-ray blazars with substantial activity level. By combining the information of detected and candidate AGNs, we characterise the blazar activity, including the discovery of a region of consistency between the gamma-ray flaring duty-cycle and the recurrence time between flares. SuperAGILE is the hard X-ray (10–40 keV) imager for the gamma-ray mission AGILE, currently scheduled for launch in mid-2005. It is based on 4 Si-microstrip detectors, with a total geometric area of 1444 cm2 (max effective about 300 cm2), equipped with one-dimensional coded masks. The 4 detectors are perpendicularly oriented, in order to provide pairs of orthogonal one-dimensional images of the X-ray sky. The field of view of each 1-D detector is 107 °×68°, at zero response, with an overlap in the central 68°×68° area. The angular resolution on axis is 6 arcmin (pixel size). Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) present different prompt and delayed emission properties which might suggest a possible taxonomy. Nonetheless, the existence of different classes could be the combined effect of different intrinsic and/or observational conditions. The latter, in particular, are related to the instrumental capabilities. For this reason, we studied the instrumental sensitivity of the AGILE satellite as a function of the spectral properties of GRBs. AGILE will be able to detect most of the bright-long bursts and its two detectors, with their independent trigger algorithms, compensate each other in detecting soft and high energy GRBs. Moreover, AGILE will possibly give a major contribution in the study of very energetic bursts with typical peak energies above ∼ 1 MeV. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The co-alignment of two detectors of the BeppoSAX Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (40-700 keV) with the Wide Field Cameras (2-26 keV) on-board the same satellite has permitted simultaneous detection of several GRBs in X and gamma rays and their localization with high precision. These measurements allow us also to extend the study of GRB spectra down to 2 keV and with good accuracy thanks to the knowledge of source direction. The gamma-ray observatory AGILE, the first ASI Small Mission, is planned to operate in 2002-2005. We present here Super-AGILE, an X-ray detector added on top of the gamma-ray tracker. Super-AGILE will have a large field of view, providing hard X-ray imaging and moderate spectroscopy together with the gamma-ray detector. Super-AGILE is composed by Si-microstrip detectors, equipped with a low-noise electronics allowing a sensitive range of 10-40 keV, and coupled with a set of mutually orthogonal one-dimensional coded masks. A bidimensional source location capability is obtained by dividing the total 1444 cm² geometric area of the detectors in two orthogonal directions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the status of ongoing modelling of the populations of the EGRET point sources. To analyze the two-dimenstional distribution, we wrote Monte Carlo simulations to produce model populations. We compared models containing an isotropic component and one or two galactic components to the EGRET catalog; preliminary results indicate that while one galactic component produces a spatial distribution consistent with the EGRET sources, the resulting flux distributions are inconsistent. The very large field of view (∼1/5 of the sky) of the AGILE gamma-ray satellite allows us to monitor broad sky regions with a few pointings, increasing the chance of detecting variable sources and efficiently sampling their characteristics. We present the AGILE exposure and sensitivity maps for several examples of selected pointing programs taking into account Earth occultation effects and other satellite constraints. Considering instrument efficiencies, point spread function, particle background noise and a model for the diffuse gamma-ray emission, we estimate the global scientific performance of AGILE in observations simulating both single pointing and complete sky surveys (i.e. Galactic Plane scans and selected deep exposures). In this way we provide an estimate of the number of detectable sources giving some highlights bout the AGILE observation planning strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
