Fusion cross sections have been measured in the
40 Ca +58 Ni and40 Ca +64 Ni systems at energies around and below the Coulomb barrier. The40 Ca beam was delivered by the XTU Tandem accelerator of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro and evaporation residues were measured at very forward angles with the LNL electrostatic beam deflector. Coupled-channels calculations were performed which highlight possible strong effects of neutron transfers on the fusion below the barrier in the40 Ca +64 Ni system. Microscopic time-dependent Hartree-Fock calculations have also been performed for both systems. Preliminary results are shown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The γ-particle coincident measurements, performed by coupling of the PRISMA spectrometer to the large γ arrays (CLARA and AGATA), demonstrate a strong interplay between single-particle and collective degrees of freedom that is pertinent to the reaction dynamics. By using the unique PRISMA performance in terms of both resolution and efficiency, measurements at very low bombarding energies have been performed. Via transfer of nucleon pairs, valuable information on the component responsible for particle correlations has been derived. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

KINEMATICS ,MAGNETIC spectrometer ,NEUTRONS ,COULOMB barriers (Nuclear fusion) ,CLASSICAL mechanics - Abstract
In the last period, two classes of experiments have been carried out with the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. In particular, the one- and two-neutron transfer processes at energies ranging from the Coulomb barrier to deep below it and the population of exotic neutron rich nuclei in the A~130 and A~200 mass regions have been studied. Both kinds of experiments have been performed in inverse kinematics identifying in A, Z and velocity the light target-like recoils with PRISMA placed at very forward angles in order to have, at the same time, high efficiency and good energy and mass resolutions. Multineutron transfer reaction
90 Zr+208 Pb has been studied at the energy close to the Coulomb barrier energy by using the PRISMA + CLARA set-up. In this fragment-? coincidence measurement, the selective properties of the reaction mechanism in the population of the specific states have been discussed. Based on the observed ? transitions of neutron transfer channels, namely89-94 Zr isotopes, their level schemes have been constructed and updated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The multinucleon transfer reaction
40 Ar+208 Pb has been measured at Elab = 260 MeV with the large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. Mass and charge yields, differential and total cross sections, total kinetic energy loss distributions of different channels were simultaneously studied. Angular distributions were measured in a wide angular range by matching three different angular settings of the spectrometer. Absolute cross sections were obtained after the response function of the spectrometer was evaluated. These cross sections for different transfer channels allow the discussion of the role played by nucleon-nucleon correlations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The fusion excitation function of
48 Ti +58 Fe has been measured in a wide energy range around the Coulomb barrier, covering 6 orders of magnitude of the cross sections. We present here the preliminary results of this experiment, and a full comparison with the near-by system58 Ni +54 Fe where evidence of fusion hindrance shows up at relatively high cross sections. The sub-barrier cross sections of48 Ti +58 Fe are much larger than those of58 Ni +54 Fe. Significant differences are also observed in the logarithmic derivatives, astro-physical S-factors and fusion barrier distributions. The influence of low-energy nuclear structure on all these trends is pointed out and commented. Coupled-channels calculations using a Woods-Saxon potential are able to reproduce the experimental results for48 Ti +58 Fe. The logarithmic derivative of the excitation function is very nicely fit, and no evidence of hindrance is observed down to around 1 μb. The fusion barrier distribution is rather wide, flat and structureless. It is only in qualitative agreement with the calculated distribution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The sub-barrier fusion excitation function of
40 Ca +96 Zr has been measured down to cross sections ≃2.4µb, i.e. two orders of magnitude smaller than obtained in the previous experiment, where the sub-barrier fusion of this system was found to be greatly enhanced with respect to40 Ca +90 Zr, and the need of coupling to transfer channels was suggested. The purpose of this work was to investigate the behavior of40 Ca +96 Zr fusion far below the barrier. The smooth trend of the excitation function has been found to continue, and the logarithmic slope increases very slowly. No indication of hindrance shows up, and a comparison with48 Ca +96 Zr is very useful in this respect. A new CC analysis of the complete excitation function has been performed, including explicitly one- and two-nucleon Q >0 transfer channels. Such transfer couplings bring significant cross section enhancements, even at the level of a few µb. Locating the hindrance threshold, if any, in40 Ca +96 Zr would require challenging measurements of cross sections in the sub-µb range. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

We measured excitation functions for the main transfer channels in the
116 Sn+60 Ni reaction at different bombarding energies from above to well below the Coulomb barrier. The experiment has been performed in inverse kinematics, detecting the lighter (target-like) ions with the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at very forward angles. Good mass, nuclear charge and kinetic energy resolutions have been achieved. The comparison between the data and microscopic calculations for the present case and for the previously measured96 Zr+40 Ca system, namely superfluid and near closed shells nuclei, should significantly improve our understanding of nucleon-nucleon correlation properties in multinucleon transfer processes. Multinucleon transfer reaction
40 Ar+208 Pb has been investigated with the PRISMA-CLARA experimental setup in LNL, INFN, Italy. The experimental differential cross sections have been obtained for different transfer channels by measuring more than Δθlab = 20° covered by three angular settings of PRISMA. Results have been compared with the semiclassical calculation GRAZING. Since the understanding of the reaction mechanism depends strongly on the determination of absolute cross section, effect of transport of ions through PRISMA has been studied via a Monte Carlo simulation code. The experiment has been done in inverse kinematics and light target-like ions have been detected with PRISMA placed at very forward angles. Good mass, nuclear charge and kinetic energy resolutions have been achieved. Sufficient statistics has been accumulated to extract angular distributions for different bombarding energies have been extracted and the response function of the spectrometer has been studied to correct for the aberration due to the transport of the ions in PRISMA. Binary reactions at energies close to the Coulomb barrier received recently a significant boost thanks to the advent of the large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA coupled to the γ array CLARA. In the present paper different aspects of the recent results of nuclear structure and reaction dynamics will be presented, focusing more closely on the reaction mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, a puzzling pattern has been observed in fusion cross sections well below the Coulomb barrier, characterized as a departure from the exponential-like behavior predicted by standard coupled-channels models, known as fusion hindrance. We report on recent fusion measurements performed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, in particular the
48 Ca+48 Ca reaction down to the level of 0.6 μb. Unlike most recent results in this field, we do not observe the typical divergent behavior of the logarithmic derivative; but rather a sort of saturation, albeit at a larger value than predicted with a standard nucleus-nucleus potential. The occurence of “exotic” shapes in light N = Z α-like nuclei is investigated for
24 Mg+12 C and32 S+24 Mg. Various approaches of superdeformed and hyperdeformed bands associated with quasimolecular resonant structures with low spin are presented. For both reactions, exclusive data were collected with the Binary Reaction Spectrometer in coincidence with EUROBALL IV installed at the VIVITRON Tandem facility of Strasbourg. Specific structures with large deformation were selectively populated in binary reactions and their associated γ-decays studied. The analysis of the binary and ternary reaction channels is discussed. The fusion excitation function for
36 S+48 Ca with positive Q-value for the compound nucleus formation, has been measured from near the barrier down to very low energies, where “fusion hindrance” may be expected. No evidence of hindrance shows up in the measured energy range. Coupled-channels calculations have been performed with a large diffuseness parameter of the Wood-Saxon potential, reproducing the data above and below the barrier. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The lifetimes of the first excited states of nuclei around the doubly-magic nucleus
48 Ca have been determined using a novel method that combines the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift (RDDS) method with the CLARA-PRISMA spectrometers. This is the first time such a method is applied to measure lifetimes of neutron-rich nuclei populated via a multinucleon transfer reaction. This novel method and some preliminary results on lifetimes are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published
