Research indicates a dramatic increase in the use of AAC systems over the past 5 years. However, the authors' clinical and research work suggests that support for AAC users is highly dependent on individual factors. In an attempt to address this issue, the authors are currently developing a training package for AAC users and their partners in the functional use of AAC systems. This approach involves users as co-trainers, and addresses attitudes towards AAC, both of able-bodied and disabled people, and the communicative strategies employed by both groups. This paper discusses the findings of a research project which examined the communication support networks of 20 adult AAC users in Scotland. It addresses the content and amount of training received by those individuals identified as being part of this network. The article examines the situations in residential and day care facilities for people with communication disabilities. Both workers and personal assistants were aware of the lack of training in augmentative strategies they received. This kind of experience was quite common in all institutions wherein they had learned on their own by a trial and error method on how to interact with an augmented communicator.

The article provides information about the Scottish Centre of Technology for the Communication Impaired (SCTCI) in Scotland. SCTCI is the only augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) center funded within the country's Health Service with a national remit. It was established in order to provide an AAC assessment, information and advice service to people with communication disabilities.
