The paper investigates public and private primary school choice criteria in urban settings by taking an unconventional and supplementing perspective which scarcely has been taken up by research, despite being interconnected with the topic at hand. Instead of analyzing parents' criteria for schools deemed good, which would be the conventional way, their answers on the question whether they perceive a school in their neighborhood as no-go as well as the reasons they state for doing so are qualitatively examined. In addition, based on school and official city data the characteristics of the no-go schools stated by parents are examined in terms of curricular profile, student composition and socio-economic neighborhood status and compared to non-no-go schools (ANOVA and t-test).

Ninety-four persons employed in direct care positions in a community-based agency that serves adults with mental retardation completed self-report questionnaires assessing relationships between social support and the adaptive outcomes of mood, perceived competence, and self-efficacy. Findings indicated that: (1) negative mood was negatively associated with the extent to which caregivers perceived that fellow employees are involved with their jobs, employees are supportive, and supervisors are supportive of employees; (2) no relationships were observed between support and perceived competence; (3) negative relationships were observed between several indices of support and generalized self-efficacy; (4) no one type of support was more strongly associated with adaptive outcomes than any other type of support; (5) clarity of expectations and task orientation were negatively associated with negative mood; and (6) work pressure was positively associated with negative mood. Results suggest that it may be helpful to consider social support when assessing the work climate of caregivers of persons with mental retardation. (JDD)

This is the summary of a larger paper describing the evolution of a mediated elementary accounting course at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. The course was initially developed as a 25 slide-tape lesson course which included 950 visuals and approximately 25 hours of instruction. One hundred students per semester took the course in the following manner. Four copies of the account series were on closed reserve at the library circulation desk. Students checked out each lesson, viewed it at stations for accounting students, and returned it to the circulation desk. Within several years, three problem areas became evident. First, equipment failure constantly occurred in the form of warped slide mounts, jammed slides, burnt out bulbs, and jammed audio tapes. Second, human frailties resulted in rearranged or borrowed slides and equipment malfunctions. Third, increased enrollments compounded already existing management problems of equipment shortages, limited supplies of slide-tape sets, and limited staff time to monitor and repair equipment. Finding a solution to these problems led to the use of 4 x 6 color microfiche, each containing 98 images, and the use of portable and stationary microfiche readers. The advantages of the use of color microfiche included: (1) fewer equipment problems under heavy use, (2) fewer student problems, (3) reduced management problems, (4) increased flexibility in student use of study materials, (5) lower software costs, (6) greater compatibility of course materials with existing library microfiche collections, and (7) a greater compactness in the storage and use of materials. This paper presents the present dilemma of declining productivity gains in the private sector and illustrates efforts to reverse the trend. Also presented are techniques being used by companies that are successful in improving their productivity. The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to support long-term care is gaining attention, also in the light of population ageing. Known in Scandinavian countries under the term of welfare technology, it aims to increase the quality of life and independence of people with physical, psychological or social impairments. In Germany, a new form of psychiatric home treatment, inpatient equivalent treatment (IET), is offered since 2018. It should allow service users with severe mental health issues to stay in their familiar environment during crisis, while being treated in the same complexity and flexibility like in an inpatient unit. However, this change in delivering healthcare services leads to socio-technical challenges, such as coordination of work, integration into existing healthcare workflows and ensuring continuity of care. Hence, the objective of this exploratory study is to examine how information and communication technologies (ICT) interact in the new setting and how this process can be improved. Further, we also ask how service users can participate in designing home treatment services. Methodologically, this study follows a qualitative research approach. Different methods including participant observation, interviews and focus groups were conducted to answer the research questions. Data was collected during a field visit at the psychiatric department of a German clinic in summer 2019. Field notes and interviews were analyzed using the R package for qualitative data analysis RQDA. A list of socio-technical challenges and opportunities related to IET were identified. New forms of communication, gaps in documentation practices and continuity of care are seen to be highly relevant for designing and implementing home treatment services in psychiatric care. Based upon a review of existing literature on 3D printing in different social and engineering fields, upbringing of this new technology is discussed for incumbent firms and entrepreneurs. In this new schema, we discuss 3D printing technologies progress in order to help the incumbent firms and entrepreneurs in understanding the potential depth of 3D printing for their businesses. In this essay, we analyze the impact of The Great Recession on the masculine identity and compare the gendered ways in which men and women utilize technology in heterosexual families. Specifically, we examine how, since The Great Recession, men have been leveraging technology's potential to recoup lost income and re-establish a secure paycheck and breadwinner status. In other words, they use it to recapture lost masculinity. Women, on the other hand, use technology to maintain relationships and support their husbands' financial efforts. They use it to generate supplemental income, share information, and provide mutual support. The Keck Array (Spud) is a set of microwave polarimeters that observes from the South Pole at degree angular scales in search of a signature of Inflation imprinted as B-mode polarization in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). The first three Keck Array receivers were deployed during the 2010-2011 Austral summer, followed by two new receivers in the 2011-2012 summer season, completing the full five-receiver array. All five receivers are currently observing at 150 GHz. The Keck Array employs the field-proven Bicep/Bicep2 strategy of using small, cold, on-axis refractive optics, providing excellent control of systematics while maintaining a large field of view. This design allows for full characterization of far-field optical performance using microwave sources on the ground. We describe our efforts to characterize the main beam shape and beam shape mismatch between co-located orthogonally-polarized detector pairs, and discuss the implications of measured differential beam parameters on temperature to polarization leakage in CMB analysis., Astronomy

Bicep3 is a 520 mm aperture, compact two-lens refractor designed to observe the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at 95 GHz. Its focal plane consists of modularized tiles of antenna-coupled transition edge sensors (TESs), similar to those used in Bicep2 and the Keck Array. The increased per-receiver optical throughput compared to Bicep2/Keck Array, due to both its faster f /1.7 optics and the larger aperture, more than doubles the combined mapping speed of the Bicep/Keck program. The Bicep3 receiver was recently upgraded to a full complement of 20 tiles of detectors (2560 TESs) and is now beginning its second year of observation (and first science season) at the South Pole. We report on its current performance and observing plans. Given its high per-receiver throughput while maintaining the advantages of a compact design, Bicep3class receivers are ideally suited as building blocks for a 3rd-generation CMB experiment, consisting of multiple receivers spanning 35 GHz to 270 GHz with total detector count in the tens of thousands. BICEP3, the latest telescope in the BICEP/Keck program, started science observations in March 2016. It is a 550mm aperture refractive telescope observing the polarization of the cosmic microwave background at 95 GHz. We show the focal plane design and detector performance, including spectral response, optical efficiency and preliminary sensitivity of the upgraded BICEP3. We demonstrate 9.72 µK√s noise performance of the BICEP3 receiver., Astronomy

Bicep3 is a small-aperture refracting cosmic microwave background (CMB) telescope designed to make sensitive polarization maps in pursuit of a potential B-mode signal from inflationary gravitational waves. It is the latest in the Bicep/Keck Array series of CMB experiments located at the South Pole, which has provided the most stringent constraints on inflation to date. For the 2016 observing season, Bicep3 was outfitted with a full suite of 2400 optically coupled detectors operating at 95 GHz. In these proceedings we report on the far field beam performance using calibration data taken during the 2015-2016 summer deployment season in situ with a thermal chopped source. We generate high-fidelity per-detector beam maps, show the array-averaged beam profile, and characterize the differential beam response between co-located, orthogonally polarized detectors which contributes to the leading instrumental systematic in pair differencing experiments. We find that the levels of differential pointing, beamwidth, and ellipticity are similar to or lower than those measured for Bicep2 and Keck Array. The magnitude and distribution of Bicep3’s differential beam mismatch – and the level to which temperature-to-polarization leakage may be marginalized over or subtracted in analysis – will inform the design of next-generation CMB experiments with many thousands of detectors., Astronomy

The article presents a study which described the design of an extensive field measurement campaign at the construction site of an offshore wind farm in the German Bight, including the measuring of pile dynamics, soil vibrations and hydro sound levels. The study was conducted on offshore pile foundations in the installation process to validate physical models and optimize sound emission prognoses with computer models. All parts of the acoustic system were covered in the measurements.

The article focuses on the association between marital quality and both experienced well-being and general life satisfaction among older husbands and wives. It examines the extent that the older person's marital appraisal was moderated by their spouse's appraisal, and the impact of their own compared to their spouse's marital appraisals on well-being. It states a multivariate ordinary least squares regression analysis found that marital appraisals were significant predictors of satisfaction.

There are many philosophies about nuclear fuel reprocessing with reference to safeguards and nuclear materials management. One camp believes that nuclear fuel reprocessing opens the proliferation floodgates, while others believe that reprocessing is needed to close the nuclear fuel cycle. Dr. Moniz's thesis was that an international management instrument based on leased fuel contracts help reduce the potential for proliferation and allow the international nuclear fuel cycle to be closed. Molten salt-based electrometallurgical reduction of the metals in used nuclear fuel is an excellent materials management strategy that is well-suited for closing the fuel cycle. The fact is that electrochemistry is the most sensitive technique for separating electro-active species in solutions. Molten salt-based separation has advantages over aqueous separation methods. It is more proliferation-resistant since radiologically-hotter fuel assemblies may be processed sooner and at larger margins to inadvertent criticality since no water is used. In addition, the total waste volumes produced by molten salt electroreduction are substantially less than those produced by aqueous methods. More experience is needed to support refinement of this molten-salt technology especially in promoting best-practices in materials-accounting as well as radiological safety. The University of Missouri and Missouri University Research Reactor Center (MURR) were involved in actinide separation research using a molten-salt electrochemical investigation during the 1990's through the TRansUranic Management by Pyro-partioning-Separation (TRUMP-S) program. This program is being rebuilt to focus on fundamental chemistry of 5ƒf-electron bearing elements, i.e., the actinides (An) in molten salt solutions. Presently baseline studies are being conducted using lanthanide and transition metal analogs. This paper reviews the practical issues encountered during the TRUMP-S program and outlines future priorities. Particularly important are the proposed radiological control (RADCON) procedures which provide maximum safety and full regulatory compliance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a study which compared the influence of news factors on foreign news coverage in Mexico and Germany. Research that refers to the theory of newsworthiness and their international or intercultural validity is rare, limited to small samples or only take poorly operationalized news factors as a basis. Daily national newspapers in Mexico were analyzed according to foreign news stories, assigned space, position within the newspaper and the news factors.
