Presentation of raw text to language learners is not enough to ensure learning. Thus, we present the Smart and Immersive Language Learning Environment (SMILLE), a system that uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) for enhancing grammatical information in texts chosen by a given user. The enhancements, carried out by means of text highlighting, are designed to draw the users' attention to specific grammatical structures and thus help them to notice their occurrence in authentic contexts. To assess the quality of the enhancements, we carried out an evaluation of 48 structures in terms of precision in different text genres. This paper characterized the extent of collaboration of pairs of novice programmers as they traced and debugged fragments of code using cross-recurrence quantification analysis (CRQA). This was a preliminary analysis that specifically aimed to compare and assess the collaboration of pairs consisting of two individuals who may have different or same level of prior knowledge given a task. We performed a CRQA to build cross-recurrence plots using eye tracking data and computed for the CRQA metrics, such as recurrence rate (RR), determinism (DET), average diagonal length (L), longest diagonal length (LMAX), entropy (ENTR), and laminarity (LAM) using the CRP toolbox for MATLAB. Results showed that low prior knowledge pairs (BL) collaborated better compared to high prior knowledge pairs (BH) and mixed prior knowledge (M) pairs because of its high RR and DET implying that they had more recurrent fixations and matching scanpaths. However, the BL pairs' high ENTR and LAM could mean that they seemed to have more difficulty in understanding and debugging the programs. All pairs regardless of category had more or less exerted the same level of attunement when asked to debug the programs as evident in their L values. The mixed pairs seemed to have struggled with eye coordination the most as it had the most incidences of low LMAX. [For the full proceedings, see ED596512.]

In the area of primary health care, there is a high demand in Brazil of permanent education and qualification of professionals who work in this field. Besides, nowadays it is a consensus that education can be benefited by the use of mobile devices, especially due to the possibilities of browsing, use and of easy access to different resources. In this context, this article presents an evaluation experience of usability of a mobile system for the access to open educational resources in the area of health. The results point to the construction of a simple application and of to easy access to the objects available and are of utmost importance to their evolution in the aspect of user experience. The advance of mobile industry and research has expanded e-learning in order to support an efficient and effective educational process. However, the promised benefits are as much attractive as the existing difficulties and barriers. In this paper, we intend to identify and summarize the critical factors in mobile learning through a quasi-systematic review. Educational equity for undocumented immigrants has become a widely discussed issue in both the political and public realm of Tennessee. This presentation focuses on the ways in which undocumented immigrant youth in Tennessee confront and challenge educational inequities, particularly that of affordable access to higher education. This presentation draws on data from 24 oral histories from a multi-year participatory action research project with members of a youth-led undocumented-immigrant organizing group. We argue that by engaging in a combination of various forms of resistance and activism, undocumented youth are influencing the social and political landscape of Tennessee, laying the groundwork for educational equity to become a more plausible reality within the state.

Robotics and engineering technology use in education has promoted gifted student's learning by fulfilling their needs of cognitive stimulation. However, the psycho-educative effects on these students and its impact on their education have not been fully described. We performed a yearlong qualitative intervention with ten children, exploring the process and effects of robotics and aerospace technology teaching in a full-time special education program designed in America for gifted students on social skills, verbal expression and learning processes. We found that children not only learned about robotics, engineering theory and practice but also improved their learning skills and behavior by having a challenging goal within their education. This technology usage as learning tool enhanced gifted students' social intelligence and verbal abilities.

This paper discusses some changes in the context of reading brought about by new forms of text publishing and reading, such as PDF files, websites and eBooks. In order to do so, the paper starts with some discussion on the importance of such devices. Then explores some of the main their characteristics, as well as some consequences it might bring to the behaviour of readers. It ends with some observations on how this new perspectives of regarding have been dealt with in the Brazilian educational system. [For the full proceedings, see ED562107.]
