Convivencia testimonial is a subaltern method for conducting research among Chicana/Latina researchers and participants. Its underpinnings are grounded in Chicana feminist epistemology (CFE). CFE offers an alternative way of doing critical qualitative research. Methodologies stemming from CFE can also offer innovative methods grounded in subaltern epistemes for adult educational research. In this research, quotient strategies and their influence on decision-making in situations that involve the comparison of probabilities are analyzed. In order to achieve this, classical probability situations modeled with urns were designed. In each situation, two urns with simple extraction, involving or not proportional relationships, were proposed to third grade secondary school students. The analysis was carried out through the categorization of the results based on the relationships established between the components of the urns (favorable, unfavorable and possible cases). The study concluded that when comparing probabilities, students not only resort to the quotient (ratio): favorable case numbers among the number of possible cases to make their choice, but to others where they also include unfavorable cases. This work studies the difficulties children have solving two-step word problems of a given structure (e.g., 7 lollypops/2 chocolate bars X 6 chocolate bars). Thirty-six children between the ages of 9 and 14 years were individually observed solving problems of the above type. Other tasks, repetition of the problem and model recognition, were used to probe children's representation of the problem. Analysis of children's errors on these tasks show that children's difficulties with this type of problems stem from different sources. The major ones were: understanding relationships such as the one contained in the statement "7 lollypops for every 2 chocolate bars"; given a ratio finding two new quantities that have the same ratio; and using two steps to solve the problems. These difficulties are not common to all word problems. Thus, it is important to have a clear description of the types of problems that children are asked to solve in order to uncover the particular sources of difficulty. (Author)

Red mud is a toxic by-product from the hot, caustic refining of bauxite to produce alumina, and is produced in the form of an aqueous slurry. It is typically thickened, and transported to a surface storage facility. The volume of red mud generated worldwide is increasing dramatically, leading to a massive amount of red mud to be stored annually. In order to alleviate the ongoing demand for the storage of red mud, means by which it may be used in civil engineering construction and manufacturing are being investigated. Its suitability for use demands that it's geotechnical and geochemical behaviour and parameters be better understood. The geotechnical characterisation of the red mud sample involved the determination of its as-supplied moisture content, specific gravity, particle size distribution, and Atterberg limits. The geochemical characterisation of the red mud sample involved the determination of its paste electrical conductivity, pH, chemistry and mineralogy, which also influence its mechanical behaviour and responses to external loading. The critical geotechnical parameters of red mud, such as compaction, shear strength, compressibility and permeability, also need to be determined, as a function of its moisture state. This paper describes the results of a series of geotechnical and geochemical characterisation and geotechnical parameter testing of a red mud sample to determine its applicability and potential uses in civil engineering construction and manufacturing applications. This study reports the results of a study on recycling regional waste materials in fired clay bricks. Different batches of waste materials, including fly ash collected at two Queensland power stations and red mud collected at Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) alumina refinery, were prepared in a wide range of mixes, as potential additives in local brick manufacturing. Characterisation testing (particle size distribution, Atterberg limits, specific gravity, pH, electrical conductivity, and mineralogical and chemical analyses), and mechanical testing (compaction, compressive and tensile strengths, and consolidation) of the new bricks were performed. The results demonstrated noticeable enhancement of the mechanical parameters of the waste-modified bricks, in particular with red mud, suggesting that power plant fly ash and red mud can be used economically to replace the clay in brick production in Australia. The aim of this work is to propose a (max, +) optimization model for scheduling transfer operations on a flow network within a given maintenance framework. The case study involves the scheduling of oil batch transfer operations in coordination with valve maintenance activities in an oil-exporting seaport. The optimum schedule is determined through an intuitive, and synthetized mathematical model based on (max,+) algebra with the objective of minimizing financial penalties. Real operational constraints and goals in the seaport are modeled with data from an oil seaport in Venezuela. Results show the optimum schedule obtained from a concise and relatively simple optimization model which is the main contribution of this work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Globally, landfills are the third largest source of anthropogenic methane emissions, which constitutes approximately 13 percent of global emissions of methane. With the recovery of this methane could be the benefits of energy generation and reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. Methane recovery for its direct use or its conversion into energy is not a common practice in Mexican landfills as it is in developed countries. In the closed landfill of Ensenada, Baja California an initial recovery of 406 cubic meters of methane per hour was estimated by a former study. In this paper the methane recovery potential is explored for the active landfill of the city. Biogas measurements were made during a three month period of 2009. An approximate of 82 weekly measurements were made using a GEM-2000 landfill gas meter in four biogas wells of the landfill. Based on the results of previous studies the results obtained to date show acceptable generation rates for Ensenada's landfill. The purpose of this study was to examine family factors (i.e., parental modeling of communication competence and family communication patterns) that are associated with the development of communicative competence in homeschooled students. Participants included 101 parent-child dyads from homeschooling families. Results of a hierarchical regression indicated that parent communication competence and family conversation orientation were significantly associated with child competence. Additionally, parent competence significantly interacted with conversation orientation in predicting child competence. Family conformity orientation was not significantly related to child communication competence. Magazine reading plays an important role in young people's daily media diet. Although young people report seeking sexual health information from magazine sources, little is known about the frequency and nature of nonsexual health information in magazines targeted to teenaged audiences. This content analysis explored the presentation of both sexual and nonsexual health information in three popular teen magazines. Articles were analyzed for the presence of educational health information, personal accounts, statistical evidence, and expert sources. Analyses were also conducted to explore the phenotype and age of models depicted in health story graphics and the extent to which those models depicted threatening visual images. Findings demonstrated that magazines contained a variety of health topics and frequently featured personal stories from other teenagers.The majority of models depicted in the health articles were White teenagers. Approximately 20 million people in the U.S. have HPV, a sexually-transmitted infection linked to cancer. We examined the news information presented about the HPV vaccine in major U.S. newspapers over the 19 months following its FDA approval. We also explored the way this information was framed, the sources cited, and the presence of personal examples. A content analysis of 547 newspaper articles revealed that less than half of the articles provided detailed information about HPV or the vaccine. Of the articles that contained a message frame, cancer prevention was most frequently employed. Government/political sources, medical doctors, and the CDC were the most commonly cited sources. Researchers have noted that occupational sex segregation will not be fully understood until detailed data are collected on natural (Biernat & Fuegen 2001) and non-scripted interactional settings (Ridgeway & Correll 2004). This paper makes a direct contribution to this goal by applying experimentally established theory to a natural context that involves the live interaction of applicants and evaluators who are recruiting them for jobs. Although hiring settings are rarely accessible to researchers, this project identifies a unique exception. The context of this study is the Spanish exam system that is used to recruit candidates to fill important government jobs where women are currently underrepresented. I gathered and examined quantitative exam data and data gathered from systematic direct observation of exam sessions. This work draws from Status Characteristics Theory (SCT) and Ridgeway's discussion of gender and interaction (Rideweay 1997) and evaluates the following two empirical predictions. First, male (female) applicants will score higher at exams involving skills typically perceived as neutral (feminine). Second, I extend Ridgeway's arguments about gender and interaction, by proposing that the degree/type of applicant-evaluator interaction shapes the magnitude of SCT´s predictions. Information about the presentation by Alfonso Quintero discussed during the "World Library and Information Congress: 70th IFLA General Conference and Council" held on August 22 to 27, 2004 in Buenos Aires, Argentina is presented. It offered information on the project called Digitization of the Great Colombia Press: 1820-1830. It also discussed the several phases in establishing the so called Nineteenth Century Press Rescue project.

This paper reports the results of two studies designed to compare predictors of enjoyment of reality-based and fictional TV programming. In Study 1, 260 adults completed a survey of their cognitive and emotional reactions to either the fictional or reality-based programming that they generally watch. In Study 2, 502 adults completed a similar survey but with a particular reality-based or fictional program in mind. Results of both studies suggest voyeurism (i.e., curiosity about others) is likely a distinguishing marker of reality-based and fictional programming. However, different predictors of enjoyment for reality-based and fictional programming suggests there are as many differences among types of reality-based programming as between reality-based versus fictional programming. Both studies also found more variance explained for the enjoyment of reality-based versus fictional programming. Further, certain gratifications (learning, surprise, suspense, and self-awareness) had quite different effects on enjoyment depending on the context in which they arose. A matched sample (198) of parents and their children (college freshmen) were surveyed about their perceptions of crime prevalence, fear of crime for themselves and for family members, the frequency of parents' warnings to children about crime, and television viewing habits. It was predicted that exposure to televised violence, both fictional and news programming, would predict not only parents' estimates of crime frequency, but also parents' fear for the safety of family members and the frequency with which they warn their children about crime and violence. It was also predicted that parent's warnings would cause young-adult children to estimate that crime is more prevalent and to be more fearful of the potential of victimization.Results indicate that parents' crime related television viewing influences parents' crime prevalence estimates directly, and parents' altruistic fear for daughters indirectly through prevalence estimates. Moreover, warning daughters about violence appears to increase daughters' fear of violence directly and their perceptions of crime prevalence indirectly.
