4. Mexico-United States Relations. Report of a Wingspread Symposium (Racine, WI, March 25-27, 1979).

Abstract

Members of the U.S. and Mexican media, government officials, academics, and representatives of private organizations met to discuss issues and concerns of both countries. Topics included energy, trade and development, migration, bilateral governmental relations, and the role of the press in these affairs. Mexico's oil and natural gas reserves were discussed; Mexico viewed its energy potential as a way to balance the expansion of its petroleum output with its overall industrial growth; the United States viewed the reserves as an energy issue. Illegal Mexican migration was considered by Mexicans as a brain and muscle drain; the United States saw the instituting of a regularized guest worker program as one solution to this problem. Regarding trade and development, Mexico was seen as having more status as a world trading nation because of its development and control of natural resources. In discussions of bilateral governmental relations, the perceptions held of each other, the lack of communication over the years, and the need for consistent policy were considered. The media bear a heavy responsibility for building understanding and cooperation between the two countries. (Author/NE)

6. Error Analysis in Basic Writing.

Abstract

Many teachers of basic writing are preoccupied with error. Before marking any errors in a student's composition, the teacher should read it carefully, try to understand the student's intention in writing it, and respond in those terms. Priorities for analysis should be consistent with the teacher's priorities for teaching and be set in terms of what will make the greatest difference in clarifying the student's communicative intentions. Analysis should also be framed in terms that will encourage the students to set their own goals for improvement. To be genuinely instructive, teachers need to be specific--about the strengths of their students' writing no less than the weaknesses. For students to become critics of their own writing, teachers should help the students remain objective in their impressions of their writing. Errors can be studied in the context of meaningful discourse through the use of individual conferences, a read/tape/playback/revise approach, and small group writing workshops. (HOD)

7. The Nature of Contextual Analysis.

Abstract

Work with 12 students in a basic writing class led to the conclusion that textual analysis alone will not provide basic writing teachers with the information they need to deal effectively with student errors; instead, contextual analysis is needed, an understanding of how students compose and what their guiding concerns and basic problems are. There are six main developmental stages which make up the student writing continuum--scribal, ideational, performative, communicative, intergrative, and creative. Each of these stages may be thought of in terms of five aspects of a student's progress: (1) the relationship of his or her speaking and writing skills; (2) his or her individual composing style; (3) his or her guiding concerns; (4) his or her basic problems; and (5) his or her common errors. First and second drafts by students at three distinct levels reveal how a student can be helped to progress from one level to the next. If teachers can encourage students to elaborate the meaning of their own texts and to become more careful, insightful readers of their own writing, then the students themselves will be able to recognize and correct errors that interfere with the clear and complete communication of their ideas. 49. Impact of Reel-Laying on Mechanical Pipeline Properties Investigated by Full- and Small-Scale Reeling Simulations.

Abstract

The article discusses a study made on pipe material subject to the stresses of reel-laying. Cited effects on the pipe material include repeated plastic strain and ageing, which affect ductility and strength. By simulating the stresses pipes undergo during reel-laying, the study aimed to minimize such effects. Findings reported include ensuring the direction of the last load step be the same as the subsequent testing, which results in greater yield strength, while fracture elongation can be minimized through reeling and ageing.
